The countdown has begun toward the season 9 finale, so it’s speculation time. This year we have a number of storylines in play and lots to talk about, so let’s begin.
Dean and the MoC – This is obviously Dean’s big year. Dean has been getting progressively dark since the season premiere, when he prayed in the church – an open call for all angels – and in an effort to save Sam's life, agreed to a deal with an angel he knew as Ezekiel to help him possess Sam and then to lie to Sam when Sam woke up so that Sam won’t be able to expel the angel. The lies continued, as Ezekiel convinced Dean he needed more time to repair a dying Sam and Dean got used to having an angel on hand to save dying friends or be summoned for information (the effect being temporarily turning Sam off).
Things started to spiral when Ezekiel killed Kevin while in Sam’s body, Sam emotionally shut Dean out after learning the truth, and Dean agreed to go on a road trip with Crowley (never a good idea). Dean has a history of dealing with unpleasant thoughts by pushing them down to a dark, fatalistic, self-loathing place, rather than dealing with them. Sam’s had some luck over the years in getting Dean to address some issues (such as the reasons behind Dean’s season 3 death wish, or Dean’s lack of hope in season 5), but Dean is pretty far gone now. Plus, Sam seems to be working through his own issues right now.
Intensifying what was already there – a repressed inner desire for violence – is the Mark of Cain. Dean is becoming stronger now, particularly when in possession of The First Blade, but this transformation has made him more bloodthirsty and has dulled his emotional, human side. To see where this may lead Dean, we can look at Cain’s story. Cain said his brother was working with Lucifer, so he made a deal with Lucifer instead to take Abel’s place in Hell. He killed his brother – sending him to Heaven – and became a demon, strong enough to create and kill the Knights of Hell, and obviously more powerful than Crowley. He renounced his demon side when he fell in love, and is now living in exile.
So what does this mean for Dean?
- Will Dean become a full demon, and to do so, will he need to kill his brother and/or make a deal with Lucifer? He seems compelled in that direction, but Dean has always differed from Cain, Michael, and even John, in that he was never willing to consciously consider killing Sam. But with Sam and Dean barely speaking now, have things changed? And if yes, what would incite Dean to make this final move?
- If Dean does become a demon, or even if he doesn’t, does Dean take a leadership role in Hell? Or, as Crowley seems to be manipulating him for some purpose (firstly to kill Abaddon, but Crowley is never that simple), would Dean end up working as a servant to Crowley, Abaddon, or Lucifer?
- Cain told Dean some vague and ominous things. Cain told Dean he will want Dean to use the blade on him, and that the blade comes with a steep cost. Speculation is that Dean is losing his soul, but this is unconfirmed.
Sam’s Role – Sam started off this year badly physically damaged from having started, and then stopped, the trials – so far damaged that he was said to be unhealable by human methods. At the end of last season, he was on a mission to close off the gates of Hell, but more personal to Sam, he sensed he was purifying his blood of the demon taint. He dropped out of the trials before the process was finished, was hospitalized, and then became unknowingly possessed by Ezekiel/Gadreel for the first half of the season. When he found out what Dean had done, he was angry and told Dean they could work together but not longer be brothers. He seems to be noticing the Mark of Cain and is becoming increasingly concerned about its effect on Dean.
A popular online theory is that Sam will talk Dean down and save him, finally redeeming himself from what he has perceived as a series of failures when it comes to his brother. But can Dean still be reached by words? He’s clearly hearing things from a skewed perspective now, as he keeps repeating that Sam said he wouldn’t try to save him, which is not what Sam said. The power-of-love save fits with the show (see Swan Song), but the power of love only goes so far. Ask Adam. And in season 4, Sam was not brought back by the power of love. He was brought back by learning that Ruby and Lilith had manipulated him into letting Lucifer out of his cage. Hard lessons.
Adding another possibility to where this story can go is the reemergence and increased frequency of subtle references to Sam’s past demon blood powers/addiction. Sam, when he started with the trials, became consumed with the idea that he could purify his blood. He also tried a purification of Crowley through a blood transfusion ritual. We’ve seen Crowley become addicted to human blood, a development that seems to have little purpose other than confusing Crowley and mirroring Sam’s past blood addition.
In addition, the psychological conditions for Sam to start using his powers again are in place. In season 4, Sam became a power addict after being powerless to watch his brother be dragged off to Hell. Sam’s trigger has always been a feeling of loss of power, or control, and this season began with the biggest example that could possibly effect Sam, and that was an extended possession that ended with his body being used to kill an innocent friend. There have been continuous situations recently to make Sam feel powerless - being constantly tied up or hearing diminutive comments like Metatron referring to him as Dean's little brother. We recently saw a MOTW episode in which the guest character, Alex, mirrored Sam in a lot of ways. She was a human living in a monster family that hunted humans, as Sam was a monster (or so he believed) living in human family that hunted monsters. Sam never wanted to hunt monsters and tried to run away, and Alex never wanted to hunt humans and ran away. There was also a symbolic reference to the blood as Sam was almost completely drained of his blood, as Alex began a transformation into vampire and was losing her humanity. Again, another symbolic connection to the demon blood storyline.
Finally, Sam’s boy-king destiny and his powers in the early years were about him leading a demon army against humans. His powers were designed to let him control demons. Coincidentally, Abaddon, we learned through Sam’s discovery, is building a demon army. It was never made clear what, if anything happened to Sam’s powers. Are they still there, repressed because Sam thinks they’re evil? Does Sam need demon blood to trigger them? Of did they get burned off in Hell? The show has never conclusively addressed these questions one way or another.
Is the show setting us up for a Dean vs. Sam season 10? If Dean goes darkside and can’t be redeemed through the power of love, it will be a pretty short fight if Sam doesn’t have any supernatural power on his side. Dean seems to be currently aligned with Crowley, and Sam has shown increasing distain toward Crowley, to the point of suggesting killing Crowley when Crowley was within earshot. Could this be a set-up to a Sam/Abaddon alliance on one side, vs. a Dean/Crowley alliance on the other?
Cas and the Angels – Yes, this sounds like a ‘70s band. Cas has had a bumpy road this year, having lost his angel powers at the close of season 8, experiencing a brief time living as a human, and now finding himself in the middle of an angel civil war. Metatron warned Cas that he would burn through his stolen grace, but can Metatron be trusted? Is Cas’ true grace still attainable up in Heaven? Also up in the air is the question whether Cas can, or should, lead the angels against Metatron.
After a few seasons of seeing so many angels murdered at the hands of their own, part of me feels like we’re witnessing the extermination of the angel race. That ending would align with the season 5 episode The End, in which Cas gradually loses his powers because all of the angels had “left.” The circumstances are different now, but we may be heading toward the same end – a human Cas with no other angels left. Or, we may be heading toward an end where Cas becomes the angels’ new leader, and with his unique experiences with humanity, is able to guide them toward a better and smarter future. What’s on the horizon for angels – evolution or extinction – or something else?
And we still have Metatron to deal with. It was hinted in a recent episode that Metatron has been manipulating reality, playing God by rewriting the story. And that begs the question, how long has Metatron been up to this? Was he messing with reality as far back as the start of season 8, when we saw a dark figure watching Sam outside Amelia’s, and was he behind Dean misremembering what had happened in Purgatory? How powerful is Metatron exactly? Or is it possible that Metatron isn’t just playing God, but that he IS God? And if he is, what does he want? This wouldn’t be the first time Supernatural took a figure that’s supposed to be good and turned it around.
Finally, we saw the sort-of return of Gabriel. This appears to be an illusion created by Metatron, but could this just be a gentle introduction to the return of the real Gabriel further down the line? And if so, what role would he play in all of this? If Metatron's not God, could an appearance of God be in the works?
So speculate away in the comments! Three more episodes before we’re on summer Hellatus. How do you see this going down and the season wrapping up?
I just want something to finally happen. Plot progression this year has been incredibly glacial.
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings about this. There have been times I've felt like this, but on the other hand, I feel like we (fans) have this discussion every year. My big issue, I guess, is that it feels like in the past few years, it's taken all season to get the point where the story starts moving, it climaxes in the finale with a cliffhanger, and then everything's dropped within the first two episodes of the new season - just to start the build and waiting again. I have less of a problem with waiting if there's trust that there will be a payoff in the end that's worth it, but I've been short on trust since season 7.
ReplyDeleteDean has always had a dark side so let me understand that the mark is getting into both his purgatory side that hunting was pure and his hell side two issues that he never was able to resolve. One can hope in S10 the power of love via cas and sam can save dean but I am curious how dark will dean go and will him and Crowley rule hell or do we think he will be like cain and disappear and cas and sam will have to try to locate and try to figure out how to save dean. I mean Sam has had issues with Dean that he figures that he has let dean down so wouldn't the best thing to be is to finally save your brother and then to get rid of their issues and go on fighting the good fight or have sam stay and be a men of letters and dean drive away in the impala and hunt??? And cas run heaven but be available to help sam and dean out???
ReplyDeleteOh man, I had never thought about Dean vs Sam before! That would be quite the storyline too if Sam had to use his dormant powers to stop Dean, but I certainly hope this isn't one-and-done in the season ten premiere. I would also say that Sam probably has to do something to bring out his powers too because they seem to be unusable since we last saw them in season five, and I would think Sam maybe has to do much than just drink up some demon blood, or maybe it would be that simple, but it had to be a very powerful demon…Abaddon? Crowley?
ReplyDeleteIt would be a rather refreshing story arc to see the brothers going at it without them really being in the backseat with the main storyline.
Thanks for the comments. I feel like Sam's issues of not fitting in with his family and feeling like the black sheep are as ingrained in Sam as Dean's low self-esteem issues are in Dean. Sam has saved Dean countless times, mostly on MOTW hunts, but they are still times Sam has come through for Dean. So I don't think Sam saving Dean from this would would erase Sam's issues anymore than Dean rescuing Sam from Hell cured Dean of his low self-esteem issues.
ReplyDeleteAt this point, I think they're both just going to have to find a way to work around their issues, or solve them on their own, and come together somehow. I do think, though, that those two have a bond that's still there when they're fighting, and they have a better ability to get through to each other than any else does, so they are each other's best hopes when things get very bleak.
You know, I had another thought after I posted this article, and that is that Sam and Dean - if they both had powers tied to Hell - might use those to take on the real big bad - Metratron and Heaven! I do think, though, that things will get more rocky between Sam and Dean before this would happen.
ReplyDeleteI believe Abaddon dies in 9x21, but if Dean turn demon or knight of hell in the season finale 9x23, why the side effects would take to appear slow after killing Abaddon?
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping Abaddon doesn't get killed off next week. She's had too little screen time! But I'll admit, I'm not up to date on all of the spoilers around this. Thanks for the the comments!
ReplyDeleteBut sam's powers have been dorment and you don't know how much of him was cured from the trials and gadreel. he may not have a tie to hell anymore. Dean has always since he went there and tortured souls. the only one with some powers or going darkside here just might be dean. if we are in an area of the brothers in other shoes then this maybe sam's redemption of finally saving dean.
ReplyDeleteIt's because the sinopse of 9x22 she's not there..so..she dies xDDD
ReplyDeletethe mother of all in season 6 was too powerfull, same as Abaddon and dies in 6x19 before the season finale, so..Its my theory.
This whole article is speculation, with a little recap of what we've seen so this season. Whether or not Sam has any powers still, or not, is of course speculation since we haven't heard anything about them since he jumped into the cage in Swan Song. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI have a strong feeling that Dean will have to kill Sam so that Sam will go to heaven and deal with Metatron while Dean goes to hell to deal with Abbadon... It's in line with Cain's story and they'll use it to take out the two baddies of the season. Also, I think the ease with which Dean will agree to kill Sam will show Sam how much Dean has changed because of mark of Cain or because of what he said to him about not saving Dean the way he saves Sam. I hate summer hiatus ... Although for me this has been the worst season so far... The story arc has been messy...In fact I am not even sure what has been the major story arc this season.. they wanted to cure demons initially ..that went no where... then metatron.. angel war... then mark of cain.. blah blah.. I really hope show returns to its old glory in the next season..
ReplyDeleteMetaron isn't God. He probably did what Cas did and took in a bunch of souls because he wanted to remake Heaven which augmented his powers, ascending or "mutating" him.
ReplyDeleteI think the season will end with Abbadon somehow being a seal like Lilith was and opens the cage releasing Lucifer and Michael.
That's just my theory.
That's an interesting theory! One nitpick with it, though, is that Kevin said spirits have been blocked out from Heaven and are stuck in the veil. It's an interesting thought that Dean might kill Sam for the job. I figured if it happens, it would be rage or compulsion, but he does seem to be losing his soul, and the act would be similar to Soulless Sam letting Dean get turned into a vamp for the job in season 6.
ReplyDeleteI think we'll see the show revisit the Apocalypse some day. I'm not sure what form that would take, but I'm expecting the cage and those two to be addressed again. Hope it's not so soon though.
ReplyDeleteMetatron was bored in Heaven after he shut everyone out so he set out to create an entertaining story to alievate that boredom but I'm sure he has somehow made himself more powerful. But, with all things that think they are untouchable, pride comes before the fall.
ReplyDeleteI really hope that you are wrong about Abbadon being a seal for several reasons but it would fit in with the "The End" episode as far as timing, considering that August 2014 was the date on the sign in the future. Cas could also be very human by then if the corrupted grace doesn't destroy him.
Very interesting theory, though.
I agree completely, I want more ghost stories and other episodes that aren't just about the whole season arc
ReplyDeleteI think Dean's story has been one of the best-paced stories the show has had since somewhere around season 2 or season 4. It's all built up in a way that has made sense and doesn't just seem like filler until time for an explosion.
ReplyDeleteCas' story has been all over the place, but it started picking up against with Captives.
Sam unfortunately seemed to lose most of his story midseason. I wish they could write for him in a role beyond being afflicted or being Dean's brother.
Crowley isn't in the synopsis either. I'd be surprised if both were killed off. I think they may be around but just not mentioned in the summaries.
ReplyDeleteThat's one of the things I find funny, the griping about "too much exposition this season, not enough showing" and then we get the MoC story, which has been done in such a subtle fashion the gripes became, "the show isn't telling us anything about the MoC."
ReplyDeleteI'm convinced that the whole season arc has always meant to be about Sam and Dean's relationship. Because I mean, the disintegration of it has been an element from the start of the season, and the connection to the angels/demons stuff has also on more intimate level, than world in danger type of thing.
ReplyDeleteI feel like they've done the good/bad brother stuff so much with Sam and Dean, and Sam has died so many times, and the relationship between them has decayed so much in recent years, that Dean killing him may not have as much impact. I'd rather see Dean go dark and Sam work on saving him, or getting Dean to save himself.
ReplyDeleteThere's a couple of reasons why I won't want to exactly see that happening, and the main one is probably that I wouldn't want to see Sam and Dean, both under powers related to Hell, teaming up to fight against Heaven and its forces. It would undermine, really, what Supernatural is all about and that is the brothers going after true evil, and the truest evil is, imo, Hell. Sam trying to use his powers for the good in stopping Dean's action while under the influence of the Mark of Cain and the First Blade seems like something that's also more appropriate story wise.
ReplyDeleteHey chris684, I have been thinking about another thing and wanted to pop back here and bring it up. I think we could see a similarity between what'll happen to the angels and the events of "The End"'s AU as you mentioned, but instead of becoming a human once more while the angel race is extinct, I think Castiel instead will die himself, which I think is necessary if the other angels die as well. I always wanted Castiel's story arc to either end with him leading Heaven's forces if God never returned, or die as a hero by saving Dean(since he brought him out of Hell).
ReplyDeleteI think that Jeremy Carver has decided to really kill off the major players/races/et cetera before series ends and really, Sera Gamble started it all with killing the Alphas, introducing and killing the Mother of Monsters and then introducing the Leviathans and sending the leader of the Leviathans(Dick Roman) packing back to Purgatory. The series, I think, will still end bloody as Jensen Ackles always wanted.
I'm not really sure what this season has in store for us for the last three episodes, but I know what I DON'T want to happen...
ReplyDelete1. Dean losing his soul/becoming a demon: I can see the possible path but that doesn't mean they should do it unless he can be redeemed in some way, shape, or form...
2. Dean vs. Sam: I mean the whole show center of the show is their relationship and the love they have for each other...I can't imagine them literally at war with each other...that IMHO destroys the whole point of the show!
Ah you are right! I forgot about the souls being trapped! Hundreds die each day..what was metatron's plan here! Also, when angels fell out of heaven, did every soul that ever went to heaven also fall out? That's a nice analogy you drew...Soulless Sam and now Dean with the Mark of Cain..
ReplyDeleteAhhh . . . you still trust the writers. That's good. Wish I felt the same.
ReplyDeleteI agree w/Ross. Very little has happened this year. There have been "starts" of stories but no actual follow through. Like Ross, I've been waiting for something . . . anything to happen.
I don't think Sam (or Dean dying) in itself would have much impact because, as you said, it's been done so many times before and we know it won't last. Dying at the hands of the other, though, would be new. The closest we've ever came to that was Sam choking Dean or Soulless Sam letting Dean turn into a vamp. But even in a rage or soulless, Sam backed off and didn't commit. I think that would impact their relationship forever - which I'm not saying is good, or even that I want it. It would just bring the show into new territory.
ReplyDeleteWhat I want to see is the show commit to what it started. We've seen them flirt with turning both Sam and Dean dark in the past, but if they've never committed. It doesn't mean Dean would need to stay dark forever, but it they bring him to the edge and then back off, it's just as bad as not following through on Dean's season 4 post Hell torturer storyline, the hints that soulless Sam did things much worse than what we saw but then dropping it, never letting Sam turn truly dark in season 4, not following through with Dean as Michael's vessel, or reducing Sam's post-Hell hellucinations to a hand rub.
And on the flip side, they've also been putting Sam in a victim role for too long of a stretch to not follow through on some reactions. Shows often have their heroes go through a dark, or depressed period, but it doesn't last long and it results in the hero emerging stronger, or changed in some way, in the end. Given Sam's character profile of having serious issues with power and powerless, there needs to be significant follow up from this year's possession story if there's interest in treating Sam as anything but plot device.
And to be frank, Sam was mostly wallpaper this whole season. The idea of Sam's storyline being nothing more than supporting Dean is about as exciting to me as watching Dean cook breakfast for Sam at the end of last season was exciting for Dean fans. I'm sure if something like a return of the demon powers happens, there will be lots of claims of it's "something wrong with Sam again," but the reality is that most TV character storylines involve conflict, and that means that there's something wrong with someone. Most of Cas's storylines have had "something wrong with" Cas, and there's been plenty wrong with Dean over the seasons - from John issues, to depression, to low self-esteem, to having a contract to go to Hell, to being burdened with saving the world, to depression again, to being sucked into Purgatory. Now, I agree that it's time for a change from making Sam sick, but demon powers wouldn't make him sick.
I really doubt that Dean would become dark permanently. I feel like even when Sam and Dean are fighting, there's still a deep connection there. I think it would be more likely that if they were fighting, it would be more about getting Dean back than about wanting to hurt each other. That's how I'd see it, anyway. Thanks for the comments!
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of people are wondering if Cas will be around next season. I feel like there's been so much loss, that if Cas was to be written off the show, I would rather it be something more positive - like he goes off to Heaven to become the angel's new leader and isn't as available anymore, but I rarely get what I want. ;)
ReplyDeleteI think it would be really interesting if we learned that not just new souls were shut out, but people who had died earlier were now around for an occasional haunting - for a little while anyway. I'd love to see a visit from John or Mary and see what they've been up to.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the biggest foes Sam and Dean have ever faced were Michael and Lucifer - two angels - and the lines between good and evil have become so blurred that I don't see angels as good anymore (with the exception of Cas and a short list of others). That's what I was getting at. It feels like the angels have done more damage to Sam and Dean with their apocalypse than demons ever did.
ReplyDeleteI think you misunderstood. I said I don't - in terms of there being eventual payoff. But I think I'm seeing more development in this story than you and Ross are.
ReplyDeleteAs for Dean, I actually prefer his story goes to S10. They put so much to prepare and build up this current situation, w/ being abandoned by family, the grief and struggle to save everyone in S8 and the roller coaster of S9. It really doesn't seem sth to be concluded in 3 eps, tho they could pull out another sappy Sacrifice, but I truly hope they don't. Also I hope no demon!Dean and no killing Sam. I kinda have this fantasy that we'll have a true reconciliation in ep200, #1005. :)
ReplyDeleteAs for Sam, I think DB addiction is as finished as psychic abilities. Both plotlines were dropped the moment they served their purposes. His attempt to purification in S8 seemed to me to be more psychological than anything physical. His breakdown in Sacrifice kinda backs this idea. BUT his complete OOC in S8 and that shadow, I'm all for revealing a twist there. One of the fans here said once that apparently there was a plan for Sam to have an imagined reality much like Dean's. The dreamy quality of his flashbacks implied Sam was living a lie dream, like there was no Amelia or a happy life. He could be manipulated to believe Dean was dead and then thrown into a false reality to be occupied. Sadly they dropped this idea and went w/ their twisted maturity. It'd be great if we see Metatron or another hand was behind it, anything to clean the sh** they made in S8.
As for Cas, well, this season had huge potential for him and angel conflict, but they screwed up royally on both accounts. So I really try to not rise my hopes, however in no circumstances I can accept for him to be write off of the show.
I got the feeling watching the Meta Fiction episode that Metatron, through manipulating these stories - which is real life for Sam and Dean - was pecking at the insecurities of each of the characters - Cas doubting his leadership, Dean doubting Sam's love, and Sam thinking of himself as a failure. While I don't think the events of season 8 (such as Amelia and Benny) were imagined, there was a shift in tone from the moment Sam and Dean first reunited to one that was more tense and suspicious than what we would have expected. Even the hug, before any words were exchanged, felt off. There was Sam, who seemed shifty and evasive. Dean was more confrontational than usual. He almost immediately assumed that Sam would have looked for him. And when has Dean ever not been proud when Sam had a girlfriend? I'm wondering if Metatron had been manipulating things so that they were hearing comments that reinforced their doubts.
ReplyDeleteWhich leaves me wondering about Metatron's goal, if this is true. All of the events of this year could be a continuation of that manipulation - the end game seeming to be to get Sam and Dean fighting. Another attempt to restart the Apocalypse maybe?
No, Benny was real, I meant Dean's imagined failure in saving Cas. But we never saw the real Amelia until after they decided to drop their initial plot. And frankly nothing can explain the foggy dreamy quality of Sam's flashbacks, it wasn't SPN style. Carver said once not everything is as it seems, for both brothers, we saw Dean's altered reality but never saw Sam's.
ReplyDeleteI agree, everything about the brothers seemed off from the beginning, it was so unreal and unpleasant I couldn't stand it. The only eps I saw in S8 were Cas ep, the rest were just bits and pieces. It was ridiculous, they pulled out a big sh** w/o thinking it through and in the end called it maturity and told fans to suck it up.
I like your speculation about Metatron, it's too big and kinda solve-it-all for all their screwed-ups in S8&9, but I'd accept it any minute over OOC, not to mention it's so cool ;)
I agree...that's what I would hope for ;)
ReplyDeleteI just had another thought. When they discovered the first tablet - the Purgatory one - they were warned about it. I'll have to rewatch those episodes, but I remember lightening as they started hammering at it. And Cas dropped the tablet, breaking the Word of God. What if that was what started all of this and they've been living in an altered reality since? One where Metatron has too much power?
ReplyDeleteSam and Dean got into the hunting business because of demons; no way any angel have done worse than demons, imo. Besides, Lucifer and Michael aren't exactly in the same league when just calling them both angels because there's much more than that.
ReplyDeleteThat's definitely one of the outcomes I'd be fine with, but if Carver is planning and ending the series on a note that is similar to "The End"'s events, then I think Cas could definitely die, but I would still love for Cas to be the leader of the angels.
ReplyDeleteExcellent idea about the tablet being the starting point. The revelation of the first tablet in S7 could ring the bell for Metatron to start his schemes and play all the main players.
ReplyDeleteActually I'd rather not it be all an altered reality, it'd be like we were cheated to watch a lie for 2 years and I can not accept that, not to mention we had lots of good stuff that would go out the window.
It is possible that Dean kills Sam or maybe Sam dies saving Dean and Dean sees that Sam follows loyalist him and has to fight to recover his brother. Do not be, the only thing that I want is the end and that once and for all ends the history of the angels, which have me fed up and to be able to return to see my favorite hunters
ReplyDeleteI don't think Metatron is God, though he seems to be controlling everything. I would hate it if things worked out the way he wants again...
ReplyDelete
