STEPHEN LANG OF ‘AVATAR’ GUEST STARS AS THE MOST FEARED WITCH HUNTER OF THE TIME, IN WGN AMERICA'S "SALEM,"
AIRING SUNDAY, JUNE 1 AT 10:00 P.M. ET / 9:00 P.M. CT

“Our Own Private America" – Stephen Lang (“Avatar”) guest stars as Increase Mather, the greatest witch hunter of Salem’s time, in an all-new episode of WGN America’s “Salem” airing SUNDAY, June 1 (10:00 p.m. ET / 9:00 p.m. CT).

When a shakeup within the coven leaves Mary with more power than ever, she hatches her most nefarious plan yet to bring the witches closer to achieving the Grand Rite. Alden and Cotton, reeling from the aftermath of their interrogation, question the efficacy of the trials while Cotton is left to wonder if his life's work has amounted to anything. Alden finds himself weaker by the day – a victim of a dream spell that Mary uses to search Alden’s subconscious to locate the Malum – and work out her sexual frustration in the process. Meanwhile, with Mary’s attentions increasingly focused on her old flame Alden and her new pupil Mercy, tension escalates between Mary and Tituba. Elsewhere, Anne makes an eerie discovery about her father's activities. When Cotton’s father Increase Mather makes an unanticipated entrance, Salem and its coven faces the arrival of the most feared witch hunter.

"Salem" stars Janet Montgomery as Mary Sibley, Shane West as John Alden, Seth Gabel as Cotton Mather, Xander Berkeley as Magistrate Hale, Ashley Madekwe as Tituba, Tamzin Merchant as Anne Hale, Elise Eberle as Mercy Lewis and Iddo Goldberg as Isaac Walton.

In addition to Lang, guest starring are Sammi Hanratty (“Chosen”) as Dottie, Mary Catherine O'Donnell as Emily, Daniel James as Joe Barker, Sharon Landry as Mrs. Barker, Rachel Whitman Groves as Mrs. Trask, David Jensen (“Bonnie and Clyde”) as Captain, Morgana Shaw as Mab, and Ben Mouton as Lamb.

"Salem" is co-created and written by Brannon Braga and Adam Simon, who serve as executive producers alongside Jeff Kwatinetz and Josh Barry of Prospect Park and David Von Ancken. The series is produced by Fox 21.

“Our Own Private America" was written by Adam Simon and Brannon Braga, and directed by David Von Ancken.

“Salem” boldly re-imagines the infamous witch trials in the 17th century Massachusetts town. The storyline follows Captain John Alden (Shane West) returning from war to his hometown of Salem where he finds it in the grip of a witch panic. Crushed that his lost love, Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery), is now married to his old nemesis, John is unaware she is also secretly the ruling witch of Salem, and her witches are running the witch trials.

"Salem" carries a TV-MA rating

  1. I'm kinda digging the John-Cotton team up and can't wait to meet Increase Mather and find out what the deal is with the Hale family.

  2. I won't be at all surprised to find out Momma Hale knows EXACTLY what Pappa Hale is up to. She can't be that oblivious.... that being said, I understand "the woman's place" during this time in history, but that doesn't mean she is Clueless either. I Am curious as to what plans (if he does) Pappa Hale has for dtr Anne.

*John-Cotton team: they are funny together.... both have such snarky comments to/about each other, yet they Need each other.
*Tituba seems rather jealous of Anyone getting more of Mary attentions than herself.
*Increase Mather was expected (He's in the history books), but he is just sc-air-reeeee! I see problems for the J/C bromance!

Am looking forward to this ep!!

  3. Yeah, a few episodes ago when Hale bowed down to Mary to save Anne's line and he was telling his wife about how he couldn't understand what his own parents did (sending him away to save him) until now, Mama Hale asked him 'what have you done?' I always wondered if she knew, if maybe she was a witch herself and maybe Anne is one but her powers haven't manifested yet? Hale was just a boy when his parents were burned at the stake, I feel like you can either be born a witch or become one through that forest deal with the devil.

Yeah, I think Increase's presence will test this new bromance between John and Cotton. I like how they don't like each other (Cotton is responsible for John's friend's death) but need each other, but in the last episode, they even said nice things to one another! It was progress. But I definitely think Increase coming to town will throw a wrench in things.

Tituba definitely seemed jealous, I want to learn more about her.
