Revenge - Episode 3.21 - Impetus - Review

This week's Revenge was awesome. It was intense, surprising, dark and finally satisfying. Impetus was everything I love about this show. The thing that ticks me, and it happened last season as well, is that the writers do a sloppy season (thought third was far better than second) and then redeem themselves with the last episodes of the season. Ok enough with the complaints, on with the episode. The writers have finally stopped with the side plots and this episode was great because it focused on Emily’s revenge, which she was finally able to see through.

Charlotte, being the smart girl she is (Emily’s words not mine) decides to walk back home alone with a dead phone in hand after being somewhat psycho-stalked by someone making himself pass as her dead father. It was some incredibly nice thinking. She gets snatched up on the beach close to the Grayson Manor and surprisingly enough, the kidnapping has no links to the sicko trying to mess with her. The episode begins intensely, but as soon as the camera frames the double sided mirror, I’m sure everyone guessed Emily was behind it. It made the reveal of Aiden taking of his mask not that much of a reveal.

Emily, Aiden and Nolan have this whole set up on the other side of the mirror. When you look at Charlotte, mascara streaming down her cheeks, Emily and Aiden kind of look like a duo of psychopaths. I agree with Nolan, this plan is somewhat completely messed up. I was happy to hear from Emily’s mouth that she wouldn’t hurt charlotte. Sure she’s a little bitch for the better part of the second half of the season, but they are still sisters, family. I didn’t want to see Emily lose even more of her humanity. She wasn’t even comfortable watching clone Charlotte getting tortured on Javier’s App.

“Easy Judge Judy. You were the one that sent Conrad an ear. I mean seriously, do you and Aiden flip a coin for who runs the creepiest errand?”- Nolan

When Conrad disobeyed the rules Emily had clearly stated by trying to get help, they knew it was time to amp the stakes up for Conrad to really be scared. Aiden defiles a cadaver of its ear and sends it as a warning to the man.

The whole mental torture thing was intense, although the set up at first find of made me giggle, with all the different old school TVs. It felt very over the top, but I finally got into it. It wasn’t really meant as torture, more meant as an eye opener, but watching Charlotte squirm made the moment really dark. I love when Revenge goes dark even though the scene had my poor heart in knots. Emily was having a hard time with it too, thus proving once more, there is still a person underneath her hardened robot shell.

Then Jack walked in being, well Jack. But yeah, maybe I would have had the same reaction because what they’re doing is kind of sick. Jack and Aiden, both in their own ways think they need to be Emily’s moral compasses. In there own way, both men care for both Emily and Charlotte. Aiden's right though, Jack care's for Amanda, while Aiden cares for Emily. Aiden can't go seem to go through with everything because Charlotte reminds him of his sister, which I found cute and Jack cares for the girl, just because he's him. I just kind of wish Aiden hadn't played Jack to get him on board with the plan.

“Wow. Where were you two heroes when I was 9 years old being dragged out of my house by men with guns, thrown into the foster care system. Charlotte has always been protected and she will be fine now.” - Emily

Emily goes out to get some medicine for poor Charlotte’s Panic Attack and gets blindsided by the detective investigating Pascal’s death, courtesy of her ex-husband. She gets summoned to the city, and there really is nothing she can do or say to get out of this one. Daniel is at the precinct, voicing his intentions and I couldn't agree more with the detective. As he stated, “It’s Daniel Grayson who should be worried.”

I enjoy the exchanges between Emily and Daniel. There is so much hostility, inferred feelings and sarcasme, what isn’t to love?

"You sound just like your mother. Completely insane." - Emily

Aiden leaves Jack in charge of Charlotte while he goes down on Daniel and beats the crap out of him so Nolan can switch the prints in the police database. This man really has no limits.

When Jack lets Charlotte go, all I was thinking was, you suck, you suck, you suck, which probably was what they were going for. Releasing Charlotte was all part of Emily’s master plan. Charlotte confronts Conrad and he snaps. It was amazing, hands down one of the best performances this season. Henry Czerny’s execution was flawless during this episode. I have come to care more for his actions than for Victoria's. (Enough with the lovesick puppy, please!) Conrad confesses to everything which broadcasts live, thanks to the TV crew stationed in front of the manor. With that Emily is one step closer to the finish line.

One Grayson down, one more to go. Though at this point, I would really love a good Daniel takedown. I would love to watch him squirm under her thumb; he’s become the character I love to hate. All I can hope for is for his character to stay this way, enough with the back and forth with him. Also, didn't Nolan declare war on him? One more reason to take him down.

I couldn’t get into the heart broken Victoria storyline and I’m glad it didn’t stick. When we were confronted with a crying Carl at the playground and she picked him up, for a second there I thought she was going to kidnap him, right then and there. She cleaned of his blood with her handkerchief (I like to imagine she’s the one that made him fall over in the first place) so she could gather up some DNA. She then went through her daughter’s baby book and ran her hair against Carl’s blood. Once the results were back, she refuse to go along with the demands of the kidnappers, sure her daughter would be safe. I’m just not sure why she was so sure Charlotte wasn’t in real trouble. She knew Emily was behind it, but how? It proved that Amada wasn’t really Amanda or Charlotte’s not really David’s. It doesn’t prove Emily and Amanda are one and the same does it? Or did I miss something?

I’ve come to appreciate Conrad’s shenanigans so much these last few weeks, I hope him being in prison doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing him anymore. Is money enough to get him out? Or will he be helping on Emily to take down Victoria?

“Ems, you got him.” - Nolan

David Clarke isn’t alive, right? We saw the man in the cabin and he wasn’t David Clarke. The ring means nothing more than someone else has it. I just hope there won’t be an endless chase for this man to take Emily away from completing her revenge on Queen V. If David Clarke really was alive, wouldn’t he have reached out to Amanda? I somewhat accept the Grayson’s and Jack not recognizing her, but her own dad? That would be way too farfetched.

(Can’t wait for next week! ;))
