Ratings Breakdown:
Year-to-year overnight erosion was the immediate observation with CBS’ victory a reflection of “The Big Bang Theory,” of course. “Big Bang” topped the night at a 9.9 rating/17 share in households at 8 p.m., and it led into time period dependent “The Millers” at a dominant 5.8/ 9 at 8:30 p.m. While CBS will, no doubt, be boasting at its upfront presentation how “The Millers” is the highest rated new sitcom this season, keep in mind that the overnight erosion out of Sheldon, Leonard and company last night was 41 percent. That is significant.

The season-finale of CBS’ “Two and a Half Men” also scored a 5.8/ 9 at 9 p.m. (a close No. 2 behind “Grey’s Anatomy” on ABC), but full retention out of “The Millers” is a positive worth noting. Far less significant was episode three of lead-out “Bad Teacher” at a 3.9/ 6 (#2) at 9:30 p.m., which dropped by nine percent from one week earlier and 33 percent from “Two and a Half Men.” Three-week overnight track for “Bad Teacher”: 5.1/ 8 – 4.3/ 7 – 3.9/ 6.

The Eye net’s older-skewing “Elementary” perked up to a dominant 5.2/ 9 in the overnights at 10 p.m., but that was 16 percent below the 6.2/11 on the year-ago evening.

In other week three news, ABC drama “Black Box” finished second in the 10 p.m. hour with a 3.4/ 6. Comparably, that was 13 percent below one week earlier, with retention out of lead-in “Grey’s Anatomy” (#1: 6.0/ 9 from 9-10 p.m.) of just 57 percent. Comparably, this should translate into only about a 1.1 rating in adults 18-49. Three-week overnight track for “Black Box”: 4.6/ 8 – 3.9/ 7 – 3.4/ 6.

Earlier in the evening on ABC was an encore of “Grey’s Anatomy” at a fourth-place 2.3/ 4 at 8 p.m.

In the specials depart, “The American Comedy Awards” on NBC was not so funny at an anemic 2.3/ 4 from 9-11 p.m. Just one-tenth of a rating point higher was lead-in “Hollywood Game Night” at a distant third-place 2.4/ 4 from 8-9 p.m.

Elsewhere, demo friendly “Hell’s Kitchen” on Fox (#2: 3.0/ 5 at 8 p.m.) led into a 5.0/ 8 at 9 p.m. (#3) for diluted “American Idol” at 9 p.m., which dropped by a hefty 40 percent from the 8.4/14 on the year-ago evening (at 8 p.m.). Both “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.3/ 2) and “Reign” (#5: 1.1/ 2) on The CW were on par from one week earlier.

  1. Between NFL draft, NBA and NHL playoffs, it's clear most of the Thursday drivel got a pass. I imagine TBBT/GA received from nice L+SD DVR love. Elementary will catch it on the L+7D.
