Ratings Breakdown:
CBS scored another typical Thursday overnight victory, but it was NBC that was most improved thanks to three-hour special “iHeart Radio MusicAwards.” The special averaged a 3.6 rating/6 share in households from 8-11 p.m., which scored NBC’s top non-Olympic Thursday average since Dec. 19, 2013, with a gain versus one week earlier of 71 percent. Comparably, this could be enough to finish second overall for the evening.
“The Big Bang Theory” on CBS, featuring the return of Bob Newhart, topped the night, with a 10.3/18 at 8 p.m. Next was “The Millers” at a dominant 5.9/10 at 8:30 p.m., which slipped by a hefty 43 percent from Sheldon, Leonard and company. In week two news, CBS comedy “Bad Teacher” dropped to a 4.3/ 7 (#2) at 9:30 p.m., which was a typical 16 percent below its debut 5.1/ 8 one week earlier. And the retention for “Bad Teacher” out of lead-in “Two and a Half Men” (#2: 5.9/ 9 at 9 p.m.) was 73 percent. In other words: could be better/could be worse.
Sophomore “Elementary,” which could be eyed for a move to Friday next season, led the 10 p.m. hour with a 4.5/ 9 in the overnights.
In other week two news, ABC drama “Black Box” dipped to a 3.9/ 7 at 10 p.m., which was 15 percent its week-ago debut (4.6/ 8 on April 24). One year earlier, “Scandal” was considerably stronger at a 6.1/11 and the retention for “Black Box” out of “Grey’s Anatomy” (#1: 6.8/11 at 9 p.m.) was sluggish last night at 57 percent. “Grey’s Anatomy” featured the return appearance of Isaiah Washington after a seven year absence and the departure of original series regular Sandra Oh.
Earlier in the evening on ABC was an encore of “Grey’s Anatomy” at a fourth-place 3.1/ 5 from 8-9 p.m.
Elsewhere, Fox dropped by eight percent week-to-week (and a hefty 41 percent from the year-ago evening) with its combination of “Hell’s Kitchen” (#3: 3.2/ 5), “American Idol” (#3: 4.8/ 8) and recent entry “Surviving Jack” (#4: 2.3/ 4), which from a creative standpoint is worthy of a second season. Year-to-year, rapidly fading “American Idol,” which is about to hit the 500-episode mark, dropped by 39 percent.
The CW capped off the night with its combination of “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.3/ 2), which is showing its age with a loss of 24 percent from the year-ago evening, and freshman drama “Reign” (#5: 1.1/ 2).
Tops in late night, once again, was Jimmy Fallon on NBC at a 2.7/ 7 in the household overnights, which bested the competition – Jimmy Kimmel on ABC (2.2/ 6) and David Letterman on CBS (2.1/ 6) – by 19 percent and 22 percent, respectively from 11:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Seth Meyers on NBC led the 12:30-1:30 a.m. daypart with a 1.2/ 4, which was one-tenth of a rating point (or nine percent) above departing Craig Ferguson on CBS (1.1/ 4). And “Nightline” on ABC scored a typical 1.4/ 5 at 12:30 a.m. “Last Call With Carson Daly” closed the night on NBC with a 0.8/ 3 at 1:30 a.m.

What is he talking about? Elementary is not moving to Fridays, both Blue Bloods and Hawaii 5-0 are returning, so there is no room. And I don't see those two shows moving either.
ReplyDeleteNice increase for GA, I hope it translates in the demo.
So Millers & THAM got the same sample (5.9). Last week, even if Millers had a bigger preliminary number, THAM was higher in the final demo. Let's see how it goes today :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck, Elementary. Could that be a mistake? It's never come close to rating that low.
ReplyDeleteHH number for GA last week?
ReplyDelete6.0/9.
ReplyDeleteWere is Elementary going to go on Fridays, the 8pm slot? I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteBut that number for E is beyond a series low. And it was the most heavily promoted they've done in awhile. I just don't get it. Dropped eight tenths in a week? Ghastly. I think Sunday, maybe, but I'm pretty bummed out this morning. It's such a good show.
ReplyDeleteWow, great boost. 6.8 is a Scandal-level HH right?
ReplyDeleteSunday is possible if The Mentalist is cancelled.
ReplyDeleteFor Scandal, that number usually translates in the high 2's, low 3's.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping he really meant 5.4, but that 9 is worrisome. Ugh. I can't imagine E and iHeart share that many viewers, lol
ReplyDeleteEverything seems to be down from usual, except for Grey's and NBC
ReplyDeleteThe CW apparantly continues to struggle.
ReplyDeletethey had good Tuesday and Wednesday
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean the "departure of Sandra Oh"? There are two more episodes and she won't depart until the season finale on May 15.
ReplyDeleteI hope Reign at least got a 0.5... Greys was up it was expected.
ReplyDeleteConsidering Moonves is talking about starting E on Mondays, no way it moves to Fridays. I could see it eventually on Sunday at 9/8, not 10. CBS is not going to tear most of Thursday apart, they just don't make huge moves that often.
ReplyDelete"The CW capped off the night with its combination of “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.3/ 2), which is showing its age with a loss of 24 percent from the year-ago evening."
ReplyDeleteOuch! Can't say i'm surprised. But i think that'll change next year.
They need to have good Mondays so i can keep my show another season. (ugh!)
ReplyDeleteEverybody down.
ReplyDeleteNBC aired iHeartRadio Awards, higher rated than its thursday shows on HH, but let's see the demo. Grey's doing what has done over the past few years, using tragedies and comebacks to boost ratings.
I hope for a VD series low, people told me about the episode and I felt bad of how they screwed Caroline.
im guessing MADAM SECRETARY will take the Sunday 10 pm slot
ReplyDeleteI too need a second season of TTP!
ReplyDeleteYou're expecting a show to hit series-low coz you didn't like it,real mature!!
ReplyDeleteSeriously! And this is the month we find out. Sigh. Monday will be a sad day, we need to get everybody watching. I want those ratings up for the finale.
ReplyDeleteNo way does CBS premiere something new on Sundays.

TAHM sharply down :-(
ReplyDeleteBut it could adjust up something in the finals. Anyway last night episode was less funnier than the previous one, so I can get the lower demo.
Joe Adalian-TV Mojoe on Twitter.
ReplyDeleteLucky FOX for at least having Gordon Ramsay ...
ReplyDeleteAny pre-emptions recorded last night?
ReplyDeleteNope.
ReplyDeletei'm sorry for celebrating, but after self-proclaimed-queen-you-know-who did to TVD, it deserves every bit of bad ratings it can get
ReplyDeleteYay for grey's
ReplyDeleteI do think that either S11 or S12 will be the final (I don't think it will go pass 12)
1.3 is not a very big loss for Black Black, I thought it would sink to a 0.8-0.9
ReplyDeleteUmm, if I got Berman right, TVD should adjust down to 1,6
ReplyDeleteWhat's up with TBBT?
ReplyDeleteGrey's up, but I was expecting high 2s.
Ouch for TVD. This has been a bad year for them. The show is not doing well. I stopped watching, but I'm not in the demographic they want and I don't have a Nielsen box so I don't matter, but apparently other people are just as dissatisfied as I am.
ReplyDeletei think TVD deserved it - they didn't manage to ascend from their premise (human girl loves two vampire brothers) and they did not develop any of the characters, killed those who were interesting, focused on OMG moments. They are not trying to make a good show - just to fill seasons they have left, up until 6th, because, I HOPE 6th will be it's last season. No creative power, no drive, no story lines, no character development - sometimes it feels like the writers are just writing story lines: OK, now, what can we do next? no consistency, coherence. And it's not that I was a fan or something - it was a good show, but now, complete garbage.
ReplyDeleteTVD is getting what it deserves. This is the worst season so far, with
ReplyDeleteall the recycled Damon and Elena disgusting humping/melodrama and all
the plot holes and fan servicing and Damon always getting a free passes
because hes oh so pretty, but he continues to be an abusive monster.
'oh so pretty' well put :D
ReplyDeleterumours are they will announce next friday what is renewed and what is not.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.spoilertv.com/2014/01/2014-upfronts-schedule.html
ReplyDeletethanks, i know the upfronts are on the 15th but i heard they will announce earlier on the 9th..of course this is not official so may not be the case
ReplyDeleteI believe ABC announced before Upfronts last year. Dunno about other networks.
ReplyDeletecw too, they announced before
ReplyDeleteeither way we will know in a week or 2 weeks at most
Oh boy, next Friday?? Gulp! = (
ReplyDeleteI really want surviving Jack to do well:( it is a massive family favourite in our house (no we don't have a Nielsen box).
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I don't think the show would fair any better if Stefan and Elena were the ones having the on and off relationship either. It would be the same bad ratings, just with the opposite instead, Delena shippers pointing fingers and crying about how Stelena is dragging the show down.
ReplyDelete
