-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS dominated this first night of the summer 2014 television season, beating No. 2 NBC by 24 percent. And the Eye net victory, of course, stems from an encore of “The Big Bang Theory” at a 6.3 rating/11 share in the household overnights at 8 p.m. Comparably, that was No. 1 overall for the evening. Next was a repeat of “The Millers” at a dominant 4.2/ 7 at 8:30 p.m., followed by a repeat of “Two and a Half Men” (#1: 3.9/ 7 at 9 p.m.), canceled “Bad Teacher” (#2: 3.1/ 5 at 9:30 p.m.) and an encore of “Elementary” at a 3.6/ 7 from 10-11 p.m. (#1t).

Once the regularly scheduled line-up on CBS begins after Thursday Night Football concludes next fall, the network would be wise to flip the time periods of returning “The Millers” and upcoming “The McCarthys.” Why not give “The McCarthys” the lead-in support out of “The Big Bang Theory” instead of wasting it on unworthy “The Millers”?

In series-premiere news, Fox scripted drama “Gang Related” disappointed at a distant third-place 2.5/ 4 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m., which was 26 percent below the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “Hell’s Kitchen” (3.4/ 6). Considering most new series drop in the vicinity of 10 to 20 percent in week two (and another approximate 10 percent in week three), “Gang Related” will face an uphill battle.

Overall, demo friendly “Hell’s Kitchen” averaged a 3.3/ 6 from 8-9 p.m.
In season-premiere news, NBC reality competition “Last Comic Standing,” hosted by JB Smoove and now featuring judges Roseanne Barr, Keenan Ivory Wayans and Russell Peters, returned after a four year absence with a 3.7/ 6 in the overnights from 9-11 p.m. Comparably, that was 12 percent above its seventh season-opener on Monday, June 7, 2010 (3.3/ 6), and it built from lead-in “Hollywood Game Night” (#3: 2.7/ 5 from 8-9 p.m.) by 37 percent. While not a slam-dunk by any means, consider the opening ratings for the return of “Last Comic Standing” a positive for NBC.

Over at ABC, repeats of the 90-minute “Bachelorette” season-opener (#4: 1.9/ 3 from 8-9:30 p.m.) and the “Modern Family” season-ender (#4: 2.2/ 4 at 9:30 p.m.) led into a third-place 2.7/ 5 for freshman drama “Black Box” at 10 p.m. And The CW aired part one of two-part original miniseries “Labyrinth,” which could not compete at a 1.0/ 2 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m.
