ABC Wins; Respectable Sampling for Maya Rudolph Special on NBC
Household
Rating/Share
ABC 7.7/12
NBC 6.4/10
Fox 4.4/ 7
CBS 3.9/ 6
CW 0.6/ 1
-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Monday 5/20/13:
Fox: +267, NBC: + 7, CW: no change, ABC: -10, CBS: -20
———-
-Winners:
“Dancing With the Stars” (ABC), “The Voice” (NBC)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Friends With Better Lives” (CBS), Movie: “District 9” (CW)
———-
-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC topped the Monday overnights, with a 20 percent advantage in households over second-place NBC last night. But the home of “The Voice,” of course, will win the evening in all key young adult demo groups.
“The Voice,” which concludes for the season tonight (opposite the “Dancing With the Stars” season-ender on ABC), rose to its best overnights in six weeks (since April 7) with a second-place 7.2 rating/11 share from 8-10 p.m. And that led into a respectable second-place 4.7/ 8 for NBC 10 p.m. variety-themed special “The Maya Rudolph Show,” which could win the time period (opposite the season-premiere of “The Bachelorette” on ABC) in adults 18-49. The one negative for “Maya Rudolph,” however, was a loss of 28 percent in the overnights at 10:30 p.m. (5.4/ 9 to 3.9/ 7). But my prediction is we will see more of Maya Rudolph on NBC in primetime next season.
A 90-minute installment of “Dancing With the Stars” led the night, with a 10.3/16 from 8-9:30 p.m., which was right on par with the two-hour installment one year earlier. Next was the aforementioned “Bachelorette” season-opener at a 5.1/ 8 from 9:30-11 p.m., which was 11 percent above the 4.6/ 7 for its year-ago opener (on Monday 5/27/13 from 8-10 p.m.). And that 4.6 in the overnights translated into 5.99 million viewers and a 1.9 rating/5 share among adults 18-49. Returning out of “Dancing With the Stars” certainly did not hurt, of course.
In season-finale news, sitcom “Mike & Molly” on CBS (which will be held back until midseason once again) concluded with a third-place 4.9/ 7 at 9 p.m. Comparably, that built from canceled lead-in “Friends With Better Lives” (#4: 3.5/ 6 at 8:30 p.m.) by 40 percent. And it led into a 3.8/ 6 (#4) for an encore of “Mom” at 9:30 p.m.
Also on the Eye was a repeat of “2 Broke Girls” at a fourth-place 3.3/ 5 at 8 p.m., and a Monday 10 p.m. repeat of “Criminal Minds” at a third-place 4.0/ 7 at 10 p.m. While “2 Broke Girls” will certainly get a boost out of temporarily relocated “The Big Bang Theory” early next season, moving back to 8 p.m. after Sheldon and Leonard and company head back to Thursday is not necessarily a positive. Note to the writers on “2 Broke Girls”: you need to develop these characters.
The night’s second season-finale was veteran “Bones” on Fox, which scored a third-place 4.2/ 7 at 8 p.m. And that led into a fourth-place 4.6/ 7 for “24: Live Another Day” at 9 p.m., which dipped by six percent from one week earlier. Three-week overnight track for “24: Live Another Day”: 5.8/ 9 – 4.9/ 7 – 4.6/ 7. As a reminder, “Bones” is moving into the Thursday 8 p.m. anchor position next season (into new drama “Gracepoint”). As for “24,” the early rating returns are good, but not spectacular.
Last, and very least, was 2009 theatrical “District 9” at a 0.6/ 1 on The CW from 8-10 p.m.

Pretty good for 24 and FOX in general, if it is still in the low to mid 2's in the demo I think we can say that Jack will be back for another summer run!
ReplyDeleteIsn't Mom getting the post TBBT slot on Monday for the first weeks?
ReplyDeleteMaya Rudolph Show was so funny last night!
ReplyDeleteCorrect. TBBT/Mom and then 2BG/Mom
ReplyDeleteYep.
ReplyDelete24 - LAD down to a 1.7. Ouch.
ReplyDeleteTMRS hit a 2.2 (with 7.2m). NBC might just order it to series.
ReplyDeleteIm still pissed that they cancelled :( fwbl
ReplyDeleteouch Bones, wasn't last night episode a season finale? O:
ReplyDeleteI don't know why 20th Century is trying to shop FWBL. It doesn't have a huge fanbase and was cancelled after 5 episodes. Which network would want it?
ReplyDeleteI really wish Bones would have went up or at least been flat.

Bones: That wasn't so good for a season finale. Instead of going up in the ratings it even goes down a tenth to a 1.6 demo (5.94m).
ReplyDeleteFriends with better lives: FWBL has a rough ride. It get's an repeat with a 1.3 demo as a lead-in and it got already cancelled. So I think a 1.6 (5.14m) isn't bad, but could be better. It matched last week's rating and goes up three tenth from lead-in.
Mike & Molly: Another season finale which goes down a tenth from last week. Not so good, but it hasn't a good lead-in!
24 Live Another Day: That's a huge drop. Down three tenth from last week, but lead-in was down as well. It shouldn't be dropping so much anymore.
just a little question: whats the difference between an encore and a repeat?
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's anything particular about 20th Century FOX doing it with Friends with Better Lives. I imagine all studios do it with all shows. It's just that they have spoken more publicly about it. But as we all know, executives talk about how great their shows are all the time and how they are totally gonna sell it someplace else, often just to please the fans wanting an answer.
ReplyDeleteSame thing.
ReplyDeleteI don't think production companies try shopping all cancelled shows, just the ones they have faith in. And FWBL doesn't really match that criteria.
ReplyDelete24 LAD got beaten by a comedy..........I expect next week to be back to normal will it return to the 8 pm slot?
ReplyDeleteNo MasterChef is on at 8.
