The Senator is really more of a coward than evil. Greer, on the other hand, is definitely evil. The guy is like eighty years old, he should be in a nursing home not condemning the world to a Terminator-like machine apocalypse.
I wouldn't call her evil, more dedicated to her country no matter what. The senator I would say is more self entered and cowardly, Greer although he probably comes closest to the definition I'd say he's more cynical.
I really was hard put to single out just one scene. I wavered between "Hope" and Hersh dying while trying to save everyone. I always was a sucker for a reformed bad guy being heroic, so I went with Hersh, but my almost even choice was the "hope in the Pandora's box" scene.
My goodness, they have just raised this show to a whole different level! How in the world will they be able to do their saving next season! And how can they work together in their new identities?
Even though this was a pretty weak episode, it was still a tough call! I gave Hirsch the nod, mainly because about five minutes before they blew him up, I found myself thinking, "I'm glad they haven't killed him off."
The truth is none of them are really evil, they simply have different agendas. Harold built the Machine mostly because he could and felt morally obligated to protect people. Control used the Machine because she's an unwavering pragmatist. The Senator used the Machine because he's controlled by his own fears. And Greer seems to believe that Skynet is a benevolent dictator... ok, he believes AI is better alternative to the current system.
That was depressing... Great episode, though. For all the times I wished they’d just killed Hersh to eliminate him as a threat, I’m really sorry to see him go :-( I’ve actually started to like the guy, along the way. Control was another surprise - I loved how she tried to protect Harold and how she said that everything she ever did was for her country. And the ending with the team going their separate ways?... Did I mention the word “depressing”? :-((( Gosh, I really hope they set Harold up in some lovely, quiet, full of books, protected from the outside world and from annoying people place. Especially, since it seems he’ll be spending his summer holidays there :-(
I really liked Control a lot after the last couple episodes. She's tough and patriotic.
All the scenes with Harold had impact.
Hersh was so badass and funny at the same time. Sad that he died. But what a way to go. I don't think a character like him could die any other way, and make it still as gratifying.
Okay now that's quite a few people I was rooting for (no pun intended) this episode that I wouldn't have dream of doing back in Season 2, which goes to show how carefully & masterfully the writers have evolved the show over 3 years. Oh the names...Root, Hersh (he did have a soft spot for Show from the start), Collier (a villain who turned out to be a mislead hero) & Control (sheesh...I hated that woman, though she is the only one I see who can stop Greer/Samaritan if Team Machine can get info to her that Greer was behind Vigilance.) My favorite moments: - Root & Shaw flirting: Get a room already! These two have amazing chemistry, second only to Finch & Reese (and the dearly departed Carter & Reese). I do hope they get together like for realsies towards the end of Season 4? - Bear: Best dog on TV ever? He fetches guns for Reese when another dog might fetch a ball! - I did feel some sympathy for Collier. While he was blinded by a sense of revenge for his brother's death, his intentions were pure despite the collateral damage (like Finch), unlike Greer who has moved to the top of my most hated TV characters list. - Root's speech at the end. Chilling!
The ending, without a doubt. It's the best season finale I've seen a very long time. It felt so much like series finale though, I now fear the actual series finale will never be able to measure up to this episode.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
You can't go wrong with Radiohead. The Nolans have proved that thrice.
ReplyDeleteGotta go with Root's speech about Hope. I've always loved the story of Pandora's box.
ReplyDeleteI like how Control stood up to them for Harold. She's a tough old bird, as my father would say.

ReplyDeletemaybe she will decide to help harold and the team against the enemy? she not as evil as the senator or Greer
ReplyDeleteThe Senator is really more of a coward than evil. Greer, on the other hand, is definitely evil. The guy is like eighty years old, he should be in a nursing home not condemning the world to a Terminator-like machine apocalypse.
ReplyDeleteHersh's death so awesome, so fitting.

ReplyDeleteCan anybody tell me what song we hear at the end ?
ReplyDelete"Exit Music (for a film)" by Radiohead
ReplyDeleteI loved the fact the machine gave root a clever way to protect those it cares about
ReplyDeleteand i absolutely loved the interface of samaritan

ReplyDeleteI didn't enjoy watching this finale. Already dreading the "big changes" predicted.

I would go for "crazy" as far as Greer is concerned.
ReplyDeleteI went with Root's speech at the end.
ReplyDeleteWhen Reese saved Finch at the very last second. I had expected it, but I still loved it. I cheered at the TV.
