Once Upon a Time- Episodes 3.21/3.22 "Snow Drifts/There's No Place Like Home" Review- Possibly the most fun I had with the show this season
14 May 2014
Once Upon A Time PB ReviewsBack on fall 2011 when I watched the pilot of Once Upon a Time I thought the show was a fresh breath of air that could take a rather predictable, but enjoyable development: the show would last 6 seasons in my mind, it would shake up things in Storybrooke every so often, but magic wouldn’t have introduced until later on in the series and its impact on the storyline would be minimum, the dance of the dual identities would continue until its final season and Emma Swan would defeat Regina and break the curse on the series finale.
I bring this up because I find it amazing how my first impression of the show was wrong on so many levels, and I’m really glad it was: I would have watched the show I described above, but I think the show has much more to gain from the changes it has done from season 2 and onwards. Granted, sometimes the show makes mistakes and takes the wrong routes, but most of the times it’s pretty damn entertaining and delivers some incredible unexpected turns, just like this stellar season finale.
I’ll shake off what I didn’t like of the finale right away: near the end of the episode the woman who Emma rescued in the past turned out to be Robin Hood’s wife, effectively destroying his relationship with Regina. This was a completely unnecessary move and it risks to send back Regina to her evil core despite all the character development she had gone through since season 2. She fought so hard to become a true hero that I will be furious at the writers if she goes back to be evil next season.
I say it’s unnecessary because aside from shock and possibly love triangles next season it won’t add anything new to the narrative: it seems like the only reasons the writers did this was to revert Regina to her old self and that’s a bad move. Some of my favorite moments this season include Regina being good: she breaking the curse so Henry and Emma gets the happy ending, she being the savior this time around, she being an unlikely friend of Emma, bonding with Snow and being part of the whole gang. I don’t want to lose that, not even for an episode, the show has committed to make her one of the good ones, why throw her back to her old self or make her go through loves triangles? I can’t think of any good reason for that, I’m not interested on those kinds of stories.
Now that I’ve told you what I don’t like- and what worries me about season 4- let’s focus on everything else that the show did right on this finale. For one, it is homage of Back to the Future (even Emma gives that reference right away) and it relives the whole plot of the movie while having fun at it. It’s such a delight to have Emma exploring the past with Hook, and while both of them seem a bit worried of coming back home after all they have been through they know they will find a way, so we don’t need minutes of complains and worries about their situation, instead we see them interact like real people and get closer than ever.
And it’s fun that they have the chance to see the past version of every person they know! While Emma knew the evil Regina of season 1 she never had the chance to see the real Evil Queen and it’s really amusing when she’s struggling to find a way to call her by (she goes with Regina, which the queen doesn’t like much). She has the chance to see her parents meeting and ruin said meeting at the same time, and she gets to meet Rumple as the dark one and play his game to revert the damage she had done.
It is all so delightfully fun to watch. Some of my favorite moments include Emma changing into Fairy Land clothes, Hook punching himself on the face (knocking his past self out), Hook and Emma at the ball, Hook helping Snow escape from the castle, among many others. The little moments are some of the strongest in the episode and they come so constantly that I was really pleased through these 2 hours, I think I smiled and laughed through the whole episode.
But aside from the fun the episode had there is also the nice emotional beats thrown into the mix. When Regina throws a fireball at Snow White- seemingly killing her- Emma realizes just how much she cares about these people. Emma Swan is a person who always has her walls up, her defenses define who she is because she has lost hope before and she doesn’t want to be hurt, but through these 3 seasons the people on Storybrooke have broken through the wall, especially her family.
It’s hard for Emma accept who she is now, because she has always run away from what it might hurt her- which is why she wanted to go back to NY so badly-, but after seeing her mother about to die she realized that she can’t run away anymore, there is a place where she is loved, a place she misses when she’s not there, a place called home. And with that realization she gets her magic back, which is a predictable, but nice touch: magic is based on emotion and you have to embrace it, but to do so you also have to accept it. By accepting that she actually has a home Emma was able to bring out her power and open the portal to go back home.
It’s a really nice way to bring her magic back. The show recognizes who Emma is, she is an orphan who lost faith in ever finding home, but in this finale she has finally learnt that she has been home for 3 years now, Henry brought her there, and now she is able to take a step forward into becoming the woman she want to be. This is the kind of character development I want to see in every episode of OUAT.
It might have not felt like a finale, but this a perfect season ender for me; Emma finally grew- and she even opened up to Hook-, we had a fun trip re-exploring the Enchanted Forest of the past and we get a more than welcome visit from Elsa at the end, possibly to cause some havoc on Storybrooke next fall.
More often than not I found myself enjoying this third season: Neverland had a couple of good episodes, but it never really lived up to its potential until its final episodes, I felt there were some moments that were nothing but a waste of time. Oz brought some of the fun back in the game and it exploited Rebecca Madder and Lana Parrilla’s chemistry to its fullest, but it still had some dumb or lackluster moments, but I’d say it mostly had great funny ones.
On my first review I said that Once Upon a Time is one of my favorite shows and that stays true to today. While I prefer watching Game of Thrones, Homeland or Arrow for substance, and Revenge for complete pleasure, Once Upon a Time- as flawed as it is- is always enjoyable, albeit silly and dumb at times. I just have a really good times following these characters and their stories, even when I get frustrated or think that the writers could do better, but this show it is still the fresh breath of air on the TV Landscape that I thought it was back when it premiered. And despite all its turnaround and changes, I still love it, and I think it will always have a place in my heart.
Finale Grades: A-
Neverland: B-
Oz: A-
Stray Observations:
-I like that Storybrooke still uses Beta Max, after all this town was frozen in time for almost 30 years.
-Hook: “So, any ideas of how to get back?”
Emma: “How would I know how to get back to the future? Who do I look like? Marty McFly?”
Hook: “Marty McWho?”
Emma: “The kid with the… lightning and the delorian and… they went back in time…”
Hook: “He is… a wizard?”
I swear to god I loved these exchanges between these two.
-Who was amused as hell to see Emma flirting with past Hook? I sure was. And present time Hook and his jealousy was just perfect.
-Carlyle made this episode extra enjoyable playing the dark one helping our heroes. By the way, someone predicted that Emma would tell him about the curse and that everything would come to pass because Emma told him that; not exactly what happened, but pretty close!
-Hook letting a rat live and telling Smith that he would get it one day was another golden moment.
-Smith: “I thought you were below desk! And why does your vest keep changing?!”
-Prince Charles and Princess Leia. OUAT you really brought some laughs into the mix this week!
-Is it me or does Emma look like Felicity Smoke from Arrow when she wears glasses?
-Ruby is back! With Intelligence gone is safe to assume that she will resume her role next season, right?
-Hook says Emma defeated the wicked witch. Don’t steal Regina’s credit!
-I find it utterly adorable that Snow and Charming named their baby Neal. Great moment.
-If season 4 manages to do episodes as enjoyable as this on a weekly basis OUAT might finally step out of the shadows of season 1 that keeps hunting the show to this day. That’s a wishful thinking.
Yes! Why do they have to revert backwards. Regina was doing so well. She is still snarky and funny without trying to kill anyone. It's so annoying. I am not interesting in seeing another fight.
ReplyDeleteI really hope the show doesn't go there, it would be so sad after coming this far :(
ReplyDeleteI hope they do something different. I know they want to bring drama because drama keeps the show going. The same exact fight over and over again without moving forward is boring too!
ReplyDeleteNo more evil Regina! no more Evil Queen!... im not sure how they are going to work this. If emma goes back in time to where Snow and Charming just meet and that the time that Marian was to be executed how on earth does she give birth to a present day 3-4 year old Roland?!?!?! There is a 30 year gap between wtf? Robin Hood and Roland were not a part of the first curse... hence they should not have been "frozen in time" like the people in Storybrooke was.
ReplyDeleteAlso... if he was in the tavern all those years ago when Tinkerbell showed Regina "this guy" he should be old... crypt keeper old.
The writers of this show have active imaginations.. but I would love to see them explain away this.
Nice review. I agree that practically every part of this season finale was just awesome and my favorite season finale this year. BTW, I think Regina will ultimately be fine. I'm really hoping that the point of this will be to show that she has grown. It was nice to see her happy, but her relationship with Robin Hood felt too much a like a fairy tale, even for a show about fairy tales! It happened so quickly and easily that it almost didn't feel real. So even though I wasn't happy with the Marion surprise, I think it will make for a much more interesting story for Regina next year.
ReplyDeleteMy guess for next season is Regina is pissed at Emma and folds inwards reverting back to isolating herself. Elsa will be a super threat that Emma won't be able to defeat because she knows nothing about magic. Elsa will turn the town into the next ice age which will make Regina eventually come around because it is her town she is queen. She will work with Emma to defeat Elsa and contain her again. They will go back to that awkward friends but not friends stage that they were at a mere few episodes ago!!
ReplyDeleteAt first I didn't like this episode because I thought they were going to continue with the past storyline next season too and then what would happen to the rest of the characters.. I love the show as it is and I don't want to watch it reboot.
ReplyDeleteThen when I realized Hook and Emma would return by the end of this episode, it got much better.
Still, I wish they didn't start another love triangle and I think they messed up Robin and Marian's timeline. How could he not known her death was Regina's fault?
I want to see him choosing Regina in such triangle but it's going to be hard for him to do so when he finds Regina killed his wife.
I'm glad it looks like the new season would focus on Storybrooke, at least at the beginning, and I liked seeing Emma bonding both with Hook and with her family.
I don't want to wait for them to go back to being friends, not even a mere few episodes, it feels like those could be a real pain in the ass :(
ReplyDeleteI really do enjoy the episodes especially Hook and Emma scenes. I squeal at every moment they were together. Though Emma shouldn't have brought back a person from the past she could have thought, "maybe if I save one person that Regina killed, she won't have to be blame for everything nor will she regret about it" some sort. I don't know why but I feel like Marian isn't who she really is. Maybe she's going to be the bad evil manipulated person with Elsa. Maybe she's Zelena in disguised! lol I mean really they focus on Robin being the "one true love, her soulmate" for Regina and they go bringing in Marian out of the blue something doesn't add up to me.
ReplyDeleteThe writers really screw up on their details, thats what happen when they add in too many characters without giving them proper ending or detailed out their background story before adding in other characters. I really wonder if they even pay attention to the fact viewers pay attention to every details
Grade: F. Show was ruined for me with this crap finale.
ReplyDeleteCare to say why?
ReplyDeleteAwesome review! I feel the same!;)
ReplyDeleteI didn't care for The Capt Swan movie at all. For this to be an ensemble cast show, the season finale dedicating so much time to just two characters and their minimal interactions with the rest of the cast was a huge letdown. Particularly since Hook and (as of S3B) Emma are my least favorite characters on the show. I'm actually happy for the hiatus, it will give me time to break away from this mess. Pretty sure I won't be back for Season 4.
ReplyDeleteI hope so!!
ReplyDeleteI disagree about the situation with Marian being only a
ReplyDeletepotential excuse for Regina to revert to her evil self. I think it’s a chance
for the writers to explore what will this “new” Regina do when things go south.
We know what the “old” one would do, but she’s not the same person anymore, and
her comment that Emma better hopes she didn’t bring anything else back seems to
suggest that Regina herself isn’t sure where this situation leaves her. Not in
terms of her relationship with Robin, because she seems convinced it’s over after
everything Robin told her about his feelings for Marian, but in terms of how she
will cope with another loss. I don’t think she will go back to being evil. Her
relationships with... well, just about everyone except Henry are possibly going
to get colder, but I doubt we’ll see her go into full-blown Evil Queen mode.
Say what you will about the writers’ ideas or lack of thereof for many other
characters on the show, but they had done a good job writing Regina’s story
(and her development) consistently over the years, so... I’m rather optimistic.
And as much as I love Regina with Robin... there’s only so much you can do with
any relationship plagued by “normal problems” without it becoming tedious. I
much rather have that kind of drama than them becoming just a mirror image of
Snow and Charming’s marriage: we don’t need more of the same.
Yeah, I would love if the writers explored the new Regina in this situation, but an interview I read said that Regina was basically going to go back to her old season 1 self against Emma :(
ReplyDeleteI can understand that, but I think it's a bit too much to leave the show because you didn't like one episode. If you didn't like the season as a whole, then maybe dropping the show if the best choice
ReplyDeleteYep, it would be much appreciated if they were more careful, sometimes they just throw one thing after another and it's a bit messy. That's among the most notorious flaws of the show.
ReplyDeleteI know the writers will probably go back to good Regina and her love with Robin Hood will be saved somehow, but I don't like the way the issue was brought into the mix, and I don't know how much Marian can add to the narritive even if she is indeed being manipulated by Elsa, so that's why I considered an unnecesary move that could cause more harm than good
