A set source says the show has bumped up production and cut season 4 to 10 episodes to accommodate Bilson.

ReplyDeleteI find it very odd that the CW goes to all the trouble of renewing low rated shows for forths and even third seasons (see Beauty and the Beast) and then doesn't let them achieve the 88 mark.
ReplyDeleteI suppose it is odd on one hand. Then again, on the other, how much value do we think that extremely low-rated, heavily serialized programs like these are going to be worth in syndication? I think syndication and the minimum episode mark are going to be less relevant in the coming years. Unless the show is a comedy or procedural of some sort, syndication probably isn't happening anyway.

ReplyDeleteI wish UPN had just died and The WB continued. It's so stupid how they have to constantly make sure they aren't favoring one of the two companies over the other. The only CBS owned show on The CW that I've truly loved was The Secret Circle, the others have tended to be the ones I avoided. Only learning this by checking these shows Wikipedia pages but it's interesting that I have preferred the Warner Bros shows in most cases.

ReplyDeleteRemember when we were talking about my unlikely wish of giving each cancelled show a mini 'finisher' season (6-11 episodes) because Netflix makes more profit of shows with clean endings ?
I'd like to think that this is something similar, a way to give closure to shows for Netflix.
At least I'd REALLY like to think that this is the reason (I can't think of another anyway).

I still think 6 episodes was too short for Nikita, but I'm just glad we got a final season.

ReplyDeleteI thought that those 6 episodes was a nice and succinct victory lap. It might have dragged if it had went on longer. As much as I love Nikita I think a 6 episode final season was beautiful.

ReplyDeleteIt was beautiful and they made every episode count. But some things (e.g. Alex/Owen) were rushed and there were some storylines that the producers wanted to do or wanted to revisit, but couldn't because of the restricted number of episodes.

ReplyDeleteConsider Nikita fans lucky. 90210 never got its own final season. Nikita at least got to tie every thing up ahead of time while 9-Oh only had the benefit of being given "advanced" notice of its cancelation while production for its fifth season finale was still underway so they were only able to furnish a decent ending, tying up as much ongoing loose ends as they can.
ReplyDeleteUPN had a lot of shows that weren't strictly from its parent CBS's TV studios, as they had programs from Fox and the WB, among others. Same goes for the WB, a fair number of past titles weren't made by Warner Brothers.
ReplyDeleteMuch of the CW's top-raters are co-prods anyway, with distribution handled by WB.
For a small and young broadcast network, I think it's more cost effective if the net's shows would come from their own parent companies' studios. But to be fair for the CW, they did have shows that they either don't own or have co-produced with another major studio, Reaper and Ringer. They also don't own ANTM but distribution and format licensing is handled by CBS.
ReplyDeleteIn the end, it doesn't matter matter which shows are made by whom. The bottomline is if the CW is making money on whatever business model their following that keeps itself afloat (which new media and international sales play major factors).

ReplyDeleteYes, I don't think they is the final season yet. They announced it's return but never that it was the final season. They also cut this season to 10 due to RB's pregnancy.

ReplyDeleteSince the CW haven't announced any show as a final season yet it makes me think something is up. If they were renewed with the intention of it being a final season then we would have been told at the upfronts.
What I personally think they plan on doing, is waiting to see how the other new shows do. HoD is apparently really cheap so they may keep it around as cheap spackle till they get something better to replace it. A budget decision in a sense (plus pushing it closer to 88 wont hurt it).
That's what i thought.... Let's keep our fingers crossed. I love so much this show!
ReplyDeleteI think the shorter season has more to do with Rachel and her pregnancy more so than anything else. If HoD maintains the utility player status it currently has with the network with those ten episodes, I don't see why they wouldn't renew it. Especially if JtV doesn't manage to fill HoD's shoes...
