Final Renewal Predictions for Revolution, The 100, Beauty and the Beast, Nashville, Hannibal, Community, Tomorrow People, Shield and more! - UPDATED!

May 8, 2014

Update 1: Looks like I was close to being on the money with Beauty and the Beast scoring the most surprising renewal or cancellation of the season so far. Against me, I still didn't predict its renewal. In my favor , from all websites I frequent about this, I was the closest one giving it a close to renewal 43% chance and I argued yesterday that the show had a better shot and that it wouldn't be nearly as mind blowing as others were predicting! Meanwhile, no surprise shock for Hart of Dixie's renewal, The Tomorrow People's cancellation, The 100's renewal or Star Crossed's cancellation! More to come!

Ok guys, this it!

After a year of speculation about which shows are and aren’t renewed, it all comes down to an end this week. With the upfronts kicking off next Monday, I would be shocked if we don’t know all renewals and cancellations by Friday the latest. That means that I’ve waited as long as I could, but I couldn’t possibly wait more.

Here’s a look at my final predictions (in brackets you can find my final odds for each show).

I will start by the groups of shows that are pretty much non-brainers so I will just list them to be done with them!

Absolutely dead-certain to be renewed and haven’t been yet just because ABC hasn’t renewed a single show until now

Modern Family: 100%
Scandal: 100%
Once Upon a Time: 100%
Grey’s Anatomy: 100%
The Middle: 100%
Revenge: 100%
Agents of Shield: 100%
Castle: 100%
Last Man Standing: 95%

Fairly Likely to be renewed and would be shockers otherwise

Law and Order: SVU: 90% (those costs negotiations be dammed!) Renewed while I was publishing the article!
The Goldbergs: 85%
Suburgatory: 85%
The 100: 85%
Resurrection: 85%
About a Boy: 85%

Certain to be cancelled no matter what

Rake: 0% Cancelled while I was publishing the article
Betrayal: 0%
Killer Women: 0%
Hostages: 0%
Intelligence: 2%
Believe: 5%
Crisis: 5%

Enlisted: 5% Cancelled while I was publishing the article
Star-Crossed: 5%
Super Fun Night: 10%
Bad Teacher: 10%
Surviving Jack: 10% Cancelled while I was publishing the article

Will be cancelled and would be surprises otherwise (although not totally inconceivable)

The Carrie Diaries [Note: For the purposes of the article, summer renewals a la Unforgettable are not considered renewals]: 25%
The Mentalist [Note: For the purposes of the article, a move to another network counts as a cancellation]: 25%
Dads: 20% Cancelled while I was publishing the article
Mixology: 20%
Trophy Wife: 30%
The Crazy Ones: 30%

Moving on to the vastly more interesting category...

The Truly Bubble Shows Which I am Pending Towards Renewal but nothing would really shock me (aka the odds of me being wrong in at least one of these are high)

Community: 60% (the spackle season will continue!)
Hannibal: 65% (if Season 1 was enough, I don’t see why comparable ratings with more episodes in the can aren’t)
Nashville: 55% (have you seen the horror movie that have been ABC new 10 pm dramas all year?)
Parenthood: 55% (it should get that farewell season, somehow, somewhere, even after a disappointing season)

The Truly Bubble Shows Which I am Pending Towards Cancellation but nothing would really shock me (aka the odds of me being wrong in at least one of these are high)

Revolution: 40% (NBC doesn’t really need it and I have a hard time justifying that Friday investment)
Dracula: 40% (Its relative numbers are in line with what Hannibal pulled last year and that was enough for renewal… but can’t NBC do something else in the fall before Hannibal that is also as cheap and as more upside?)

Growing Up Fisher: 45% (With NBC piling up comedy pilots and little space to put them, will they really bring back a show getting an indirect voice lead-in that has 13 episodes and is pulling Parks-esque numbers? - possibly the biggest bubble show of the season for me)
Friends with Better Lives: 45% (I think in any other circumstance it would have been renewed and it should probably be renewed on merit alone for the numbers it’s been getting… But CBS doesn’t need a 6th comedy pilot and I think ultimately that will prevail - for the record, this is one of the biggest bubble shows of the season for me))
The Tomorrow People: 40% (it’s not impossible that the CW could renew 3 more shows instead of 2 and it’s not impossible said 3rd shows is TTP – more on that in a second – but the combined odds of both those things happening are just too slim. Maybe putting it on this category is already optimistic)

Now we get to the part of those which are left! Every year, there is always a shocker renewal or cancellation that defies what the general expectation was. To me last year personally, by far the most shocking decision was the cancellation of How to Live with Your Parents, which I still have trouble explaining very well to this day. The Carrie Diaries is probably the biggest shocker for most though. The year before, ABC again made the splashiest decision when renewing the presumed dead Body of Proof, even though I never thought it was that big of a stretch anyway. The CW was also on the surprises map when it cancelled The Secret Circle in favor of Hart of Dixie/Nikita. CBS surprisingly picked CSI: NY for a final year instead of the widely believed to have the edge CSI: Miami and FOX also joined in when it gave to the costs and canned Terra Nova despite its numbers.
These things will continue to happen and, no matter what, we won’t get them all right. These cases are not the aforementioned cases of bubble shows that really could go either way and not be surprises – they would just mean that I was leaning the wrong way but in practically all of these cases I could also find arguments to go the other way, so it’s not a big deal. But stuff like the aforementioned cases is stuff that I believe truly shocks most TV followers. Is a shock in the works this year? For sure. Can we guess where it will come from? Well… we can certainly try.

Will The Neighbors be renewed?

The Neighbors is one of those cases that I think would be called an upset by a lot of people if it were to get renewed. Yet, like another case I will be looking at in a bit, I would like to note that I have made sure to never had it lower than likely cancellation all season. Let’s be clear: if ABC wants to renew a 6th comedy, The Neighbors is the only smart choice they have left. A Trophy Wife renewal would be a huge reach even for ABC and if they were going to do it because they produce it (as they tend to be biased towards), they might as well make the reach for The Neighbors which is not only already airing in the lowest priority slot but also has already the highest episode count. Everyone views this show as a very certain cancellation but to me the show was already some 0.3 or so tents below what it would take to get a renewal, being a sophomore and being produced by ABC. Too bad it never actually passed those extra 0.3. The show also has a history of reaches. Canning the already on Fridays and compatible with LMS Malibu Country to put the incompatible and only slightly better rated TN there felt like a reach, so clearly there is something there. Will there be something there again this year? Not impossible, for sure, but I don’t think the leap will be all that easy, especially with ABC’s reportedly strong multi-cam pilots in the works. A 40% chance.

Will Hart of Dixie be cancelled?

I would be shocked if this were to happen. Even though ratings suck on Fridays, they don’t necessarily suck more than they did on Mondays once you account for the genera CW decline this spring and once you add in Friday factor. Yet, syndication is still there giving it a huge buffer to fall through, so by all accounts, it should easily get a renewal. However, unlike a case like Revenge (which has bubble/slightly above bubble ratings so would never be an easy cancellation even without syndication unlike popular opinion), Hart of Dixie would be a clear cancel without syndication (50% ratings!), which means that the best syndication does is to put it at a slightly above average level (if you assume 80% as bubblish and assume syndication gives something like 40%, Hart of Dixie would land at a slightly above bubble level). Will that be enough? I am still firmly holding strong on the “yes, it will, for sure – Hart of Dixie is not a bubble show!!!”, especially because if there is a night the CW needs stuff to put on is Fridays, but this is certainly a potential shock source. 75% Renewal Chance and Still Ignoring the Bubble Classification

Will Beauty and the Beast be renewed?

Yes, I’ve saved the most controversial for last. Here’s the deal with this show: even though every single industry website that I follow has had this one as a certain cancellation since early fall, you may notice (if you are willing to back far back enough in my posts) that I never actually downgraded it from likely cancellation. Yes, the show has horrible ratings, but those horrible numbers are not that far from the also horrible ratings that other freshman shows have gotten on the CW (give or take a couple of tenths!) – the key word being freshman. If presented with the choice, I am very inclined to believe that the CW would prefer a show that has 44 episodes and that pulls a 0.4 than a show that has 22 episodes and pulls a 0.5. Yes, fans will complain about how unfair it is, but the financial sense is what it is. Now, I still have the show as likely cancellation despite all this. That’s pretty much because I had assumed that the CW would have no room on its schedule for it. But if the CW is willing to let ANTM take the usual first two months of the season on Fridays (as it apparently will since it was not announced in the CW’s early fall schedule), it’s not impossible that they make a Friday rotation that is ANTM/Beauty and the Beast, Hart of Dixie/Beauty and the Beast, Hart of Dixie/Hardest failing weeknight show (with the remaining of BaTb’s season airing in summer again). Is this a long shot? It would be surprising yes, but by no means I think it would be a shocker. TvByTheNumbers claims it would be the most mind blowing renewal of the season and I find that feeling a lot around the internet. Frankly, I strongly disagree with it. I don’t think a Beauty and the Beast renewal would be shocking and, at this point, I wouldn’t even go with very surprising. It wuld be further cementing the importance of the # of episodes for the CW and that’s an idea I am actually believing more and more. I am giving it a 43% chance!

Well, that’s a wrap guys! I’ll be back on the weekend to challenge you to fantasy schedule with me once we know exactly what’s been renewed and not! Thank you for reading and let me know what you think of my predictions in the comments below!

Looks like a menu to me.

  2. Growing Up Fisher:(

  3. Nashville better be renewed I'm sad about Dads I thought it was funny but on a bad time slot.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I know, right? I like the show, I like (most) of the characters. Just wish they'd get the nano-storyline done with, and move onto "rebuilding" society. A true revolution of sorts, resulting in a better, stronger, country in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Please save Trophy Wife they have such a amazing cast and chemistry and it's funny as hell Revolution is one of those show you can't stop watching also save Dracula Parenthood and The Mentalist Growing Up Fisher and Hart of Dixie I rather have The Tomorrow People Star-Crossed Beauty and The Beast as summer shows

    ReplyDelete
  6. You should try a snickers instead.

  7. I think chances for B&TB are actually 30%. 43% is far too high for a show that went as low as 0.2 in Monday nights. The only reason why I go with 30% is because it could be saved by online viewing ala Carrie Diaries, but aside from that I see no chance for it to be renewed.... well, maybe as a summer series, that could also happen, but I think it's a long shot.
Revolution odds seems about right, its ratings are not terrible and not good. I see 2 scenarios in which it could be renewed:
1)Moved to Fridays 8PM for a Revolution/Grimm/Hannibal line up while moving Dateline to Sundays.
2)Renew it for 13 episodes for midseason on Sundays night (unlikely).
Unless Revolution surprises tomorrow in the ratings and rise to a 1.5 its chances are leaning mostly towards cancellation, but it still holds a fair chance

    ReplyDelete
  8. AH is gone,i'll be gutted if Revolution gets axed... but yeah,i'm pretty sure it will.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hannibal gets renewed or I will personally write NBC a letter.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I hope that Trophy Wife gets renewed over Mixology. It's a way better show!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Ugghhh...it's bad enough that Almost Human was cancelled. If they cancel The Mentalist, Intelligence AND The Tomorrow People, I'll be bummed.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I hope the Mentalist gets renewed or finds a home on another network. It's the best show on TV.

Hostages: Renewed! Who am I kididng? Canceled

It matched you percentage chances, but I believe you bet too much on BATB, this show is pulling 0.3s not 0.4s, was pulled and moved to summer, CW's pity renewal will be HOD, since 0.3 and 66 episodes > 0.3 and 44 episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Judging by FWB ratings after its 4th episode. Crazy ones should be renewed over it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. same. don't think CBS will renew it but hope TNT can pick up:)

    ReplyDelete
  16. My final Revolution prediction--55% and just makes renewal.

    ReplyDelete
  17. And still, no one knows about Bitten. The Tomorrow People, I would say it's iffy. There is a chance for renewal there, but it was never really that great of a show.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Only thing I am worried about is Believe, rest of the stuff I expect it to happen, or won't miss much besides prolonged love triangles.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Only shows whose fates are uncertain and I care about are Hannibal, Community and Trophy Wife. I know TW has no chance but I'm happy we at least got a full 22 episode season. Hannibal will be fine, still think if NBC cancel then someone like Amazon or Netflix will pick it up. Pretty certain Community will get a final season as well, the a kickstarter for a movie.

    ReplyDelete
  20. its sad that such an amazing show as the mentalist gets thrown into the same pot as the carrie diaries, dads and trophy wife (i dint know the other ones) because the mentalist has been and is an amazing show. they changed a lot during this season and its still amazing.

dunno why it isnt working - probably just not in the US because over here in europe its one of the most watched shows.

    ReplyDelete
  21. man NBC finally has good shows again and they are going to cancel Believe and Crisis ??? Not good love them

    ReplyDelete
  22. Damn don't cancel friends with better lives, it's awesome! There's a few of my new favorites that gonna be cancelled :(

    ReplyDelete
  23. wow i actually almost completely agree with your predictions :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Beauty and the Beast all the way ~ NO other show has me so invested! Thanks for the positive outlook!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah, if "Community" can get its final season to properly wrap things up, I'm fine with that :).
I know not everything on this list can be renewed, obviously, but I do hope for the best for fans of all of these shows. Losing a show you like is never fun, so hopefully at least some fans will hear some happy news soon. And for the shows that get cancelled, hopefully they'll find a way to wrap everything up on a decent level for viewers.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love how Six Seasons and Movie has become so close to reality now.

May is both a great and terrible time to be a TV fan, every year shows we love die and yet new ones get picked up. I've lost so many shows over the years I can cope a little better with it though it always hurts.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Revolution. :( Keeping my fingers crossed for that one and Community, tbh. That's all I care about from this list.

    ReplyDelete
  28. CĆ”tia BarradasMay 8, 2014 at 9:39 AM

    Great work, congrats :)
Really great article, and thank you for the hope in BATB :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Revenge is a sure bet and is getting a full season, syndication.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Please save The Mentalist, it's the best show ever. Don't dissapoint us.
If it's CBS, TNT or some other network, just SAVE THE MENTALIST!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well, Cable renewal decisions are different.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I hope Revolution and Hannibal will get renewed, but i doubt they will :(

    ReplyDelete
  33. I get unreasonable amounts of anxiety during renewal season. Even sure things can get canceled because of behind the scenes issues beyond ratings(contracts, budgets, etc).

    ReplyDelete
  34. I used to as well, then I went through several years where my bubble shows got miraculously renewed (Chuck, Fringe) so I let my guard down a little. Then last year when many shows I liked were cancelled so now the anxiety is back just a little!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I dont believe in 88 episodes being a magic number i t think shows can be syndicated with less, i expect revenge sill be renewed but maybe for 13 episodes midseason

    ReplyDelete
  36. Surviving Jack was a hilarious show!!!! How the hell did it get cancelled???? Not too surprised about Revolution.... after tonight's episode, I cannot really see a future for this show. Perhaps maybe 10 or 12 episodes to fill in some plots and finish off the story, but nah!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I had rather have TTP than HoD and I do watch both right now. If Beauty and the Beast is renewed that will mean another season of # in comments, so PLEASE no renewal. ;) I don't mind the beast comments but keep # where it belongs on twitter.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thanks Oma Bin for the supportive 40% chance you gave to The Neighbors ... that's a lot of hope :-)

    ReplyDelete
  39. BATB is definitely not getting renewed.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Idol didn't turn out to be a good lead-in.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The Neighbors cast has moved? Where did you read that?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Blowing out the candles on my birthday cake, my only wish will be for BATB to get renewed. Everything is speculation, we'll know for sure between now and May 15th.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Nudify anyone you want!!
    http://nudify-her.com/

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yes thats what i meant

    ReplyDelete
  45. Almost 150% sure Revenge will have a full season 4 if not even a season 5. Show is number one in its time slot, number 1 or 2 on Itunes every week, big gainer in DVR, bigger hit with high income families and a huge hit internationally airing in over 100 + countries. No chance in hell it gets 13 episodes. They are even coming up with a comic book for crying out loud. Paul Lee is behind Revenge and he is going to milk it till the last drop.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I have my fingers and toes crossed for Nashville. ABC has been pairing it up with some shocking lead ins though. If Shonda's new show gets picked up (has it? I have no idea) then maybe they'll pair Grey's or Scandal with Nashville - that'd be a great boost.

    ReplyDelete
  47. No delusional BATB fan in here, (before bashing starts) up to last week I was one of the few that thought the show was done, but given the fact that the CW hasn't renew any show from the bubble shows since they announced the winning lot for renewal in February, and given the low ratings for most of the freshman shows except the 100 pilot, I would agree with this article. The chances seem higher not because of ratings but many other factors. So far no news are good news for BATB fans.

    ReplyDelete
  48. EuphemiaWonderlandMay 8, 2014 at 2:12 PM

The only reason why they are waiting it's because they haven't decided how many episodes HoD S4 is going to get.

    ReplyDelete
  49. You know something we don't? You know, definite announcement from CW or source? Other than that then you cannot say for sure. I would not be surprised that it's been renewed.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I agree. Just don't get the BATB fan bashing though. I think some people forget it's just TV, not real nor is it life or death. Hey ho, different strokes etc...

    ReplyDelete
  51. I don't think you get my point. Why would they torture the fan base if they already taken a decision to cancel BATB say it already, the show hasn't been on air since March, will come back after the upfronts. If they already canceled the show they would have said it already, they don't lose anything or the fans since show wont lose viewers if it is not on air, and only 4 episodes left. It makes no sense not to announce if it is already cancel unless it wont be chopped. Whatever it is as Mandy said its just tv and its just what I think at this point. It will be what it is with the CW you never know.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Because they will renew or cancel all shows together, probably in a few days time.

    ReplyDelete
  53. And you DEFINITELY know because you are a cw executive? watch out and you are leaking secret information from the network... :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. I don't think will hear anything about BATB until it's summer run has begun. If it does decently then I think it has a chance as a summer show. But if it was pulling 0.3s in the fall, then I can't believe what it will pull in summer.

    ReplyDelete
  55. CĆ”tia BarradasMay 8, 2014 at 2:39 PM

Complete agree with you, don´t get it but ok.

    ReplyDelete
  56. They have to announce it next week or before the upfronts on May 15, they are just waiting for all the freshman shows to have their final episode of the season, I guess, to not affect ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  57. ABC will probably renew it for syndication. Plus it has critical acclaim.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm hoping for Community's 6 seasons and a movie! So close...
I actually got pretty invested in Believe, which I was surprised about. The young actress who plays Bo is one of the few child actors nowadays that I really think is really good at the craft. Also I like the actor who plays Tate. Sad to see it not make it.

    ReplyDelete
  59. No, because some shows will stay and some will not, and they didn't want to affect the ratings of the freshman shows already on air, if there was a cancelation in plans.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I agree some people can go over the top with the beastie bashing, but they are like the twihards were with the over the top fans preaching over a average product.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Me too. I don't even want to think about cancellation. I love the show and the new angle of this season. Hopefully it will be shipped to another network!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I hope Revolution will be renewed.
I'm glad The 100 is doing great. The show is getting better and better.

    ReplyDelete
  63. EuphemiaWonderlandMay 8, 2014 at 3:58 PM

Thank you Babar. Some people don't understand how networks work. The CW does this every year so people should know by now. They renew their highest rated shows in the fall and then they renew/cancel the rest close to the upfronts.

    ReplyDelete
  64. it's been awhile since I had not seen a new series as well, I am French, and in France is talking about her every time so please do not cancel! it takes a season 2! I'm a fan

    ReplyDelete
  65. Tomorrow People. its soo unfair show like TTP is in cancellation index. how can CW ignore such great show in favour of suckiest shows HOD and carrie Diaries. >.<

    ReplyDelete
  66. What are you even talking about? CW has 5 shows left to make decisions about. The 100 the top contender for renewal and will run in to the summer, TTP has aired all episodes, HoD has two episodes left and it's renewal is a no brainer, BATB is getting a burn-off and Star-Crossed has one episode left.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Sadly, it's all about ratings. TTP is far better than 90% of the crap on CW, but since it doesn't appeal only to girls, it doesn't get good ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  68. BATB fans need to calm down a bit. Whatever has to happen, will happen, no need to be rude about it. Faith is the last thing you loose, so keep on hanging, but other people are allowed to have an opiniĆ³n, even if it differs from yours.

    ReplyDelete
  69. To sick after hearing about Surviving Jack and Enlisted to even start thinking about the other shows I watch. :(

    ReplyDelete
  70. LOL! the # are rather anoying and so are the seven random words they would write in the review in "seven words or less".

    ReplyDelete
  71. wow...i cant believed that the percentage of Beauty and the Beast is that small for renewal..that show is amazing the best show ever i've seen..i keep on believing that this show should be renewed!the Cw should know that #BATB is a great show..I am a proud Beasties that supports #BATB

    ReplyDelete
  72. Step away from Believe.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Yes, had forgotten that one. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  74. So when will ABC announce it renewals/cancellations? I am really hoping that Nashville will be renewed, love that show!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Full schedule is here

  78. I strongly dislike bragging but in this case I feel like I've earned it... Definitely was not the right word there :P

    I'm sorry.

You were 100% right going for it on BATB.

I didn't watch TTP but I'm sad for its fans, their show got canceled because it had one less season than Beast.

  80. Ha, agreed. It's exciting and hectic all at the same time.
"Community" is the only show I'm waiting on to be renewed, as all my other favorites have already been listed as coming back. The only other thing that's making me particularly nervous at this moment is waiting on news for an actor I like to renew his contract for one of my favorite shows. So if I can get good news on both those fronts, I will be a happy person.

  81. Really hope Revolution is renewed. Glad The 100 got renewed but sad about TTP. I am surprised by Beauty and the Beast b/c it didn't seem like it was doing too well.

  83. I went 30% with Beauty and The Beast, so I'm surprised but not that shocked (though I was a little shocked when I heard the news).
I have this bad feeling that NBC may cancel Revolution today :(, let's hope my gut is wrong

  85. I also have a feeling that Revolution will get cancelled tonight , they haven't cancelled anything yet tonight just picked up a hell of a lot of series so they will have to make room somehow. I just hope it gets a renewal.

  86. hat of dixie is renewed, same for the 100 and beauty and the beast!

  88. I couldn't agree more!!!

  89. LOL you always so biased! But again I watched all three shows....and BATB has the most chances... :)

  90. I still hope for some kind of half season for Revolution just to finish the story, but my biggest gripe will be Hannibal. Believe I knew had a slim chance from the start so I can certainly live with that.

  91. Yes, we need a Season 6:
    ESCAPE FROM GREENDALE!
The school is saved, but will they be able to ever move on?
Will Britta become a therapist, or will she britta it?
Will Abed be able to meaningfully connect with someone besides Troy?
    Will Rachel become a regular?
Will Shirley's Sandwiches become the next hit franchise?
Will Annie become a star detective?
Will Jeff admit to his feelings?
Will Jeff and Annie finally get together, or are the writers going to keep dragging it out?
Will Levar and his non-celebrity companion escape from Pirates?

    We need these answers, NBC!
