Fargo - Who Shaves The Barber? - Advance Preview
28 May 2014
Fargo MX ReviewsAfter a stunning climax and multiple cliffhangers at the end of last weeks episode, tonight’s new Fargo not only answers fans burning questions, but introduces a whole new set of stakes (and some new characters as Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele join the cast). In “Who Shaves The Barber?” we see many of our characters in interesting new dynamics, either weaseling out of sticky situations or forcing their way into new ones.
The enjoyment I get watching Lester Nygaard scheme and lie his way out of being prosecuted for his wife's murder might be a bit sick, but Martin Freeman is fantastic to watch and like I said last week, perhaps my favorite aspect of this series has been watching his twisted revenge tale unfold. Tonight there’s a brilliant scene between Freeman and Bob Odenkirk, as Bill Oswalt, where Lester fakes a confession that helps string together the recently-uncovered evidence he planted in his brothers garage. Odenkirk has been great all season as the dim-witted deputy, his ignorance helping Lester to pull one over on the rest of the force. But not Molly Solverson…
As Allison Tolman previewed for SpoilerTV, Solverson is indeed back tonight, but it won’t be an easy road. First we have the ordeal of Gus having to tell Molly exactly who it was that shot her. I say a lot about the main cast, but Colin Hanks shouldn’t be forgotten as down-his-luck cop Gus Grimly. His scenes with Molly tonight are great, and in our talk Tolman noted that her favorite scene of the series comes in episode 8, between - who else - she and Gus. We’ll have to stay tuned for that.
Some of the most fun in this series has come from the eccentric and usually hilarious supporting cast. Kate Walsh is back tonight as the widow of Sam Hess, and she’s charming as always. It’s just one scene, near the end, but the way she falls into Lester’s little revenge scenario is great (again, if you’re rooting for the murder). There’s also the introduction of FBI agents Pepper and Budge, played by comedy duo Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key. Their first scene is memorable if nothing else, colliding hilariously with Malvo’s quest to get even with the guys from Fargo who came after him.
As we move closer to the series’ conclusion, I really can’t wait to see to see how it all turns out. There are so many characters and storylines weaving together right now, and in just six episodes the series has proven its ability to surprise us, that it’s impossible to tell how it might end. I’ll be talking to series creator Noah Hawley on Friday and maybe he can help us get a little closer to figuring it out. Let us know what you think of tonight's episode, and feel free to share any questions you might have for Hawley, in the comments.
