Carnival Films and ITV today announced Sue Johnston is joining Series 5 of the Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning drama Downton Abbey in a guest role.
Sue Johnston (Waking the Dead, The Royle Family, Coronation Street) will join the cast as Denker, Lady’s Maid to Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham.
Johnston joins other guest actors, Richard E. Grant, Anna Chancellor and Rade Sherbedgia, Dame Harriet Walter who reprises her role as Lady Shackleton and Peter Egan who returns as Lord Flintshire.
Downton Abbey returns this autumn with a fifth series and again at Christmas 2014 with a feature length episode.
In the U.K. Series 4 of Downton Abbey saw the strongest ever series launch, with 12 million viewers tuning in and an overall 40% audience share, and the series consolidated at 11.9 million across the run. Downton Abbey hit a new record high in the U.S. with its Series 4 opener on MASTERPIECE on PBS, averaging 15 millions viewers, an increase of 39 percent from the series 3 opening episode. The show’s fourth series became the highest rating TV Drama in PBS’s history and reached over 26 million viewers, a 2 million increase on Series 3. Downton Abbey is now one of the highest rating shows on American television.
