I hear there has been incoming interest in reviving the Sony TV-produced show from a suitor but a deal is not likely. I hear creator Dan Harmon, who returned as showrunner for Season 5 after a season-long dismissal, is ready to move on to other things, prepping Season 2 of his Adult Swim animated comedy Rick & Morty and figuring out his next project. Still, he is not parting with the show lightly. “We all know what happened yesterday, we all got drunk,” Harmon said on his live podcast at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival taped the day after the Community cancellation. “I was in a place of grief…It’ll take weeks to sink in.” The day Community was axed, Harmon was flying to Portland for the fest.
“I was on my way to LAX and somebody from Sony called me,” Harmon said. “The fans of that show have more reason to be upset than I do. I can try to make another show and also I got paid for every minute I cared about that show. The people that are most devastated are people who put unpaid labor into the show [aka fans]. They didn’t get compensated for it. They loved the show.”

if the interest from another netowork is there DO IT !
ReplyDeletethat's like a total no brainer...
PLEASE bring the show back.
ReplyDeleteNow my balance is pending to NBC.
ReplyDeleteIf Harmon is that POS he deserved NBC's pleasure of cancelling the show with him leading.
This is just stupid. Any network would be happy to pick up Communit.
ReplyDeleteI'm the one who ate it and even I think he's being an idiot.
ReplyDeleteBased on the quotes that I saw yesterday I didn't get the sense that he wasn't willing to do another season elsewhere, but he didn't want to get his hopes up only to be let down, so he's looking ahead and if it happens awesome. Hopefully Hulu will do something, since they have the streaming rights, although I have noticed a number of people contacting Netflix to get in on this.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are right, the show deserves that 6th season and a movie! It's not that long of a commitment. What I don't get is why Harmon is saying all this stuff after saying a few weeks ago that if needed he would make the Community movie as a stop motion one in his garage, right now he sounds like a completely different person
ReplyDeleteLike the quote says, he's in his stage of grief and it'll take a few weeks to get over. I think his hopes may have been shot since, even though NBC wasn't a great chance for renewal (40/60 was what I heard), it was probably better than potentially getting it on Hulu. We'll see from here, but at the very least, I am glad that the show redeemed itself after Season 4.
ReplyDeleteAnd I just saw this and thought it was great:

Well that sucks.
ReplyDeleteYep. What a jerk thing to say, even if that's what he believes. On the one hand, he claims he cares for fans, but his actions indicate otherwise.
ReplyDeleteHarmon, don't give up on the show or I'll release the Chevy on you like a mad dog.
ReplyDeleteI don't know who that in the photo is, but I agree with him
ReplyDeleteIf Dan Harmon is REALLY that sad for the fans, find the time to throw up a Kickstarter. You'll get your funding guaranteed, and fans can at least have closure.
ReplyDeletePablo, I must recommend you go watch Caddyshack immediately. A true classic. Chevy Chase is one of the leads, and the man in the picture is the great Bill Murray. Fun fact, Bill Murray's character from Stripes was named John Winger, which is why Jeff's last name is Winger, and also why Dan Harmon wanted Bill Murray to play Jeff's dad.
ReplyDeleteThen eventually I will!
ReplyDeleteNot happy to hear this. Friday sucked. Saturday really hurt. Now this...damn, I need something positive to hear. C'mon Dan..find a way to get it done. Otherwise, #sixseasonsandamovie becomes just a painful hash tag.
ReplyDeleteNew hashtag is #FiveSeasonsAndNothingElse apparently :/
ReplyDeleteWhat's funny, though, is I read an article about the cancellation that went into detail of how much closure season five feels like with Community now being cancelled. I'd love to see more, but after giving it some thought, it definitely does have a sense of it knowing how to end the series on a high note and even more in a meta fashion, the way the now-series finale ended, it was so different than the past when they felt like it would be ending on a depressing note while waiting for renewals.
I actually applaud him for not pursuing this. Sometimes you have to just let go....
ReplyDeleteThere was no closure at all. They showed that Jeff does indeed have strong feelings for Annie, and then the episode just ends. No closure whatsoever. Not to mention Troy being captured by pirates.
ReplyDeleteExactly. If he really cares about us, he'll give us closure. Even if it's just one more episode that Sony funds.
ReplyDeleteI was hoping for FX.
ReplyDeleteExactly. We deserve at least one more episode that gives us closure.
ReplyDeleteHahahaha, this is brilliant :D. So true.
ReplyDeleteI would obviously love it if the show could live on for at least one more season somewhere else, or if they could, at the very least, do a little movie. But if this is the end altogether, then sad as that is, I'll deal with it. I can understand Harmon's reaction being a little off right now-having something you worked on for so many years suddenly cancelled would lead to some weird feelings.
I'd always wondered how they came up with Jeff's name-thanks for the info! It would've been so fun if Bill Murray could've come on the show.
ReplyDeleteThough, personally, I have to say that if I were to pick anyone to play Jeff's dad, I would've gone with Michael Keaton. Am I alone in seeing a few similarities between him and Joel McHale at times or no?
This show has run its course. It wasn't the same without Pierce and Troy.
ReplyDeleteDepends on what you wanted in the very end. Even after six seasons and a film, I felt like we'd never know which of the girls Jeff had more feelings for and with Troy being captured…I just found it to be funny as heck and didn't care if that were elaborated on.
ReplyDelete"Closure" is not a word these broadcast television networks are used to. I think they find the term quite scary :P
ReplyDeletelol
ReplyDelete"No Plans of Finding Another Network?"
ReplyDeleteNoooooooooooooooooooo :(
I'm kind of not surprised, even though Harmon came back he didn't seem as interested in the show as he had been probably because Rick & Morty has gone down well and probably because he is still bitter about the shit that happened after S3.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a TV movie could wrap things up for the Greendale gang
But they made it clear which of the girls Jeff had more feelings for. Ryan Ridley, who wrote Basic Sandwich, even confirmed that the secret door opens because of Jeff's feelings for Annie, not his feelings for the group.
ReplyDeleteAnd later one, the idea would have changed and I have no doubt about that, but agree to disagree.
ReplyDeleteSad, but here's a better explanation on it from Dan himself:

Harmon now says he'll discuss with Sony the possibility of sell the show elsewhere, because he doesn't want to be the person who recancels Community. Deadline just updated the news. Fingers crossed here.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you showed me this link, it makes me understands a little bit better, but what I don't get is why Harmon lost his enthusiasm all of the sudden? Back in March he was all pumped about that 6th season and the movie and now it's like he just had a change of heart. Maybe that's just who Harmon is, and I appreciate he says that he is not going to stand in the way of Community being resurrected, but it's sad to see him so down about the show when not long ago he was rather enthusiastic
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately I think he's been burned by the whole TV business too many times now. He doesn't want to get his hopes up only to have his heart broken again. Community very much is him, so to have it cancelled, then uncancelled, only to be cancelled again seems to be something that terrifies him. I get his reservations, but as a fan, I do wish he was a bit more "yeah let's do it!"
ReplyDeleteThe chances of a return seem slim now, but at any rate, at least it was here.
