ABC Upfronts 2014 - News and Scoops about Various Shows

14 May 2014

Update: 14th May Thanks to Lord_Nikon for the heads up on these extra snippets

- ABC will apply its split-season scheduling plan to more shows in 2014-15, building on the success enjoyed this past spring by shows such as Once Upon a Time, Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal.

- Observing that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “popped” during a recent 9 o’clock showing, Lee said its new time slot for fall — Tuesdays at 9, leading into the new drama Forever — makes for a more natural fit. As for the Marvel series leading out of two new comedies, Lee claimed, “S.H.I.E.L.D. has been a self starter.” He also touted it as “the most male show on the network,” and since Forever also boasts male appeal, he said, “We feel good about [the move].”

- Scandal, which cut Season 3 short (18 total episodes) due to Kerry Washington’s pregnancy, will be back with a full season. Resurrection Season 2 meanwhile will have “15 or 16″ episodes, Lee said.

* Lee said that he had decided to move Scandal to Thursdays at 9 before NBC announced that The Blacklist was heading there at midseason –and he is content to leave it there opposite this season’s No. 1 new drama. “Were very confident with Scandal. It’s a truly great show.”

  1. American Crime before Revenge sounds great!!!!

  2. yay for SHIELD joining the split season shows. I am a little disappointed Revenge isn't looking towards the endgame...hmmm I think they should.

  3. I agree, even though it's one of my favorite shows, they should end it this year or at least have a short final season next year. It isn't meant to have that many seasons, people will get bored eventually.

  4. Just curious did you read the Revenge scoop posted yesterday on this site from E Online?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Super annoyed about Galavant. Wanted to see it and The Whispers sooner.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Excited for Agent Carter...

  7. Oh I hadn't until now, well I will be on board if they do something crazy like that but I still think it should end after S4, it really got good again this season and a show like Revenge shouldn't outstay its welcome. Be crazy show, be crazy and blow everything to hell.

  8. I agreed, at the end of S4 it will be up to 88 eps ,so they would only need a 12 episode S5 to make it to the magical 100. I just don't want it to lose the momentum the last few eps have had.

  9. the rumour of Victoria becoming the narrator/revenger sounds like a disaster for the show to me.

  10. I get what you are saying about ending the show after a fourth season. The writers at the very least IMO need to have a season 4 finale work as a series finale if the ratings slip there might not be a fifth season anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Agree. Shifting the focus completely to her sounds like a terrible idea.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I wanted The Whispers for the fall as well! And I was unsure about Galavant but a quick Google Search on the lead convinced me to tune in. Ha, how shallow I must sound right now...

    ReplyDelete
  13. Not really happy with Shonda Thursday! I get them using Grey to make the 8pm solid but it doesn't seem right/fitting to me, I would've moved Scandal to tuesday 10pm timeslot and let American Crime air instead on Thursdays.

Still torn about Revenge not sure I'll be watching.

  14. - I wonder if Paul Lee will air the remaining dramas during the hiatus of the split-season shows.
    - Not too excited about yet another reboot for Revenge.

    - The episode counts goes up for Resurrection. Here's hoping so does the pace because S1 was slooooooow.

  15. Now David will be the bad guy i can see it!... but why they dont want to finish the show? e.e... Galavant sounds like a fun weird show i wanna watch it

    ReplyDelete
  16. Haha well we're both shallow then, I was already interested cuz it sounds like it could be really funny, but I started drooling when I saw the main guy lol he is effing gorgeous. And I showed my ex a picture of him last night and his reaction was "hot damn!" and he wanted all the details of the show right then so that's three people who will be watching for partially shallow reasons :P

  17. I actually think it sounds very refreshing since Victoria is such an interesting and complex character. Plus we'll see her coming from nothing next season if it plays out that way. It all depends how they play it, plus with the David twist, I'm super pumped for next season.

  18. SHIELD will have a split season, yay! That's how it should go for all serialized dramas, in my opinion. 11 episodes, one BIG break of like 3 months, another 11 episodes, call it a day. No 14 different breaks over the course of the season to the point where the audience can't tell whether there's a new episode every week, no fracture that makes the plot impossible to follow... basically, 2 cable-length seasons with a break in between.

I think we can presume SHIELD will have 22 episode again if there is some kind of split

    ReplyDelete
  20. American Crime does not seem compatible with Once AT ALL.

    ReplyDelete
  21. They say it will be a very good season and a reset. You don't know what they have planned for its future.

    ReplyDelete
  22. But the thing is I don't think she'll get the public's simapthy, since by now we all know she deserves what she got it makes no sense to show from her side how she tries to take on a revenge she doesn't deserve and I for instance would never want her to get.
Another point of view could be refreshing, just not Victoria's.

    ReplyDelete
  23. First three seasons focused on Emily's revenge to right the wrongs against her father. She did some pretty dark things but with good intent. And in the end she suceeded.

With Victoria I think they may go a different route with the theme of revenge. Whereas Emily did it for a good reason, Victoria's is with a much darker intent and it may show the repercussions of what revenge can get you with bad intent.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes but I don't think they'll get a likeable show that way, and given what I've been reading it doesn't look like it's gonna do the ratings well.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It all depends on how they do it. I doubt they're going to write it out to make Victoria look like a new hero, like what they did with Emily. Emily is after all still the main character of the show and Emily will still be out for revenge when Victoria shows back up. The finale received quite a lot of great positive feedback (rightfully so!!), so I think Season 4 will start off well. I'm excited for it, and I know a lot of other people are too.
    -
Also despite Victoria being evil, she is still a very popular, fan-favorite character on the show.

Excited for Agent Carter! And yay for AoS having a split season, good decision.

  28. Yes. Female-skewing soapy dramas/fantasy shows. American Crime is neither of those things.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Victoria being the narrater and the one to get revenge sounds like a disaster to me. Don't the writers know that that the audience don't sympathize with victoria? If that's true I won't be watching season 4

    ReplyDelete
  30. Had she not killed Aiden I would have liked that idea. I think right up to that point, I did feel empathy for her and the fact that David Clarke may not have been that good a person would have been a perfect lead-in for her story. However, I just can't get past the Aiden death. No Victoria perspective, thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't watch The Blacklist but I've heard it's good, but Scandal is fantastic on all levels so he's right to be confident!

    ReplyDelete
  32. If I had to pick it would be Blacklist over Scandal, but since I have a Hopper that records 6 shows at once, no picking for me. You should pick up season one of Blacklist and become a huge fan of James Spader, I had never heard of him and thought where has he been in my TV watching? Am now buying Boston Legal. Awesome actor.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Scandal is not what it was. Season 1 and 2 great, season 3 terrible. I have given it up.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I wonder if they will split Revenge in 2 again? I hope so!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Pablo Troncoso14 May 2014 at 12:47

god, I was hoping that was a joke! That could easily destroy the show :S. I don't want to follow Victoria's quest for revenge, I want Emily's!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Pablo Troncoso14 May 2014 at 12:54

I hope it is that, a rumor, because I watch revenge to see Emily getting retaliation NOT VICTORIA. Don't get me wrong, I like her character, but I won't stand that she gets the spotlight over Emily, I WON'T!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Pablo Troncoso14 May 2014 at 12:57

The only way I see this working is if the show keeps its focus on Emily and still has her as the heroine, if they even dare to try selling Victoria as the good one I'm out (and I have been a fervent defender of the show even when everyone was complaining about season 2, which I liked)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Pablo Troncoso14 May 2014 at 12:59

I will be watching the first episodes for sure, I have no doubt, but I hope the whole thing about Victoria becoming the narrator/revenger is just a rumor since the writers haven't even decided if they are going to pick up from where they left off or if they are going to make a time skip. I just hope they don't do such a hard reset. If you are going to reboot it, ok fine, but don't do that!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Pablo Troncoso14 May 2014 at 13:05

I'm ok with Revenge rebooting, but please DO NOT MAKE ABOUT VICTORIA'S QUEST FOR REVENGE!
If they do I will still watch the show since they could surprise me, but it really worries me that it coudl destroy the show completely :S. Revenge has become my favorite show on the air, please let it remain that way u.u

    ReplyDelete
  40. I hope it's not true too. No one can loves Victoria after the season finale.

  41. Pablo Troncoso14 May 2014 at 13:19

All Sundays dramas are supposed to have split seasons, except maybe for Resurrection because it is only 15-16 episodes

    ReplyDelete
  42. Me too if the show goes in that direction its going to loose a lot of viewers and the show cant afford to loose anymore viewers. I hope that the writers are aware of that.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I actually don't mind victoria seeking revenge. Maybe because I never actually cared about "good" guys (nolan, emily, aiden) in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Well to me, season 3 was better than season 1. Season 2 being better than both season 1 and 3.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I thought the split season worked well for this season's shows. Glad that they're expanding the split season idea to more shows.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It's ironic that ABC loves Revenge but doesn't promote it. At least not like Castle, OUAT, Scanda, AOS or GA. like I rarely see promos during the week between other shows.
I love Revenge, so much. I love the characters. But even I know, season 4 has to be the last. They need to combine everything into the last season and make it epic and fast paced like it has been recently. There's only so long each side will survive. And I can't handle another Team Emily death. It hurts to much. I kinda hope David being kinda bad now, will just straight up kill Victoria and Daniel and get it over with. I'm sick of seeing their faces.
And the fact that they are now making Victoria the voice over. Screw that. Voice overs usually bring in empathy. I don't want empathy for her. I don't care for what she has to say. She's self centred, "blame everyone but me, I'm innocent" crap and psychotic. (Sorry just watched Aiden die again, kinda emotional)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I agree! Funny you mentioned OUaT because, until the last few eps of the season, I felt ABC wasn't promoting it either.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Pairing Forever and AoS is a solid choice!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think it's a good idea to reverse the basic dynamic of the show and have the Graysons, having lost everything and hit rock bottom, go after Emily for revenge instead. After 3 seasons, which already dragged in some parts (I found episodes 3x14-3x18 extremely dull for example), you have to change the formula somewhat. I don't want Victoria to be the narrator because as others have stated, it makes no sense to tell the story from the PoV of a villainous character the audience hates. It would be tantamout to making her the heroine, instead, which would never work. However, in terms of the actual plot I don't really think Emily has any revenge left to take, so it makes sense to have a role reversal with her becoming the target. The only alternative, I think, would be to make David the villain which I would find awful and abhorring.
I think next season, they could make Daniel the Big Bad, provided he became much smarter and savvier because the current Daniel is clearly no match for Ems. He would have a lot to avenge: his father was sent to prison by Emily and is dead, his mother was put in the loony bin by Emily, and he himself has been framed for murder by Emily's BFF Nolan (technically it was Gideon, but Daniel doesn't know that). Victoria could be in Hannibal Lecter mode, guiding Daniel in his revenge quest from the mental institution until he manages to get her out. I don't know what they're going to do with David but I hope he isn't completely vilified, which Victoria's words to Emily seem to foreshadow... he better have a good reason for not having reached out to Emily and Nolan all of this time.

  50. Personally I saw heaps of promos for OUAT during the ABC shows like MAOS, greys anatomy and so on. But never EVER revenge. seriously. All season. Only during scandal. And that's because they both promote each other, but that's it. I've seen more promos for revenge during resurrection or 5 mins before the show, then the whole week put together.

    ReplyDelete
  51. 1000000% agree.
The voice overs are supposed to show empathy by their perspective. After killing Aiden, and the general presence of her character I don't want to have empathy for Victoria, or any other fan.

    It does shift focus greatly.
At least have a voice over by all characters. That would be awesome. Like greys anatomy.
But to have to listen to her talking all season is gonna be hell. It'll be like a psychotic extremely religious person blaming the devil for possessing her.
