BBC Worldwide and Atresmedia to co-produce original sci-fi drama The Refugees Partnership with ATRESMEDIA will signal the first original co-production for BBC Worldwide with a European broadcaster
The Refugees (Refugiados) will be the first series that ATRESMEDIA has commissioned for Spanish channel laSexta
BBC Worldwide and ATRESMEDIA TV today announced that they will co-produce an original English-language sci-fi drama entitled The Refugees, which will begin filming this summer before premiering on laSexta in Spain next Autumn. BBC Worldwide will act as co-producer, commissioner for international channels, and global distributor.
The Refugees (Refugiados), which has been created by Ramón Campos, Gema R. Neira, Cristóbal Garrido and Adolfo Valor will be produced by Bambú Producciones, producer of Grand Hotel, which airs in the UK on Sky Arts. Refugees explores the impact on a small rural community after millions of refugees from the future travel back in time to seek shelter in the present.
Ben Donald, Executive Producer for International Drama, BBC Worldwide says: “The appeal of using British talent whilst growing our content pipeline by sourcing it from a new European partner really spoke to us. As did the opportunity to shoot an English speaking drama in Spain with a British cast and writer. This is part of an emerging trend for some European networks to move into English language drama; we are now exploring this model to deliver cost-effective, high quality output. And combined with Atresmedia’s ambition and such an intriguing original story this was a collaboration too good to shy away from.”
“At ATRESMEDIA, we endeavour to achieve the maximum level in our fictional productions. Being able to address a project of this type involves considerable progress as regards quality. It provides the possibility to innovate in our market and to create a product with international scope. We could not have a better colleague for this adventure than BBC Worldwide, which is responsible for some of most important audio-visual series in the history of television”, stated Sonia MartÃnez, Manager of Fiction at ATRESMEDIA TV.
ATRESMEDIA TELEVISIÓN has been part of successful series such as El tiempo entre costuras (Time and Needle work), GalerÃas Velvet (Velvet Galleries), Gran Hotel (Grand Hotel), Luna (Moon), El internado (The Boarding School), El barco (The Ship) and El secreto de Puente Viejo (The Secret of Puente Viejo), among others.
