The Originals - Review of Episode 1.18 - The Big Uneasy

Apr 20, 2014

As predicted, the peace in New Orleans didn’t last very long. In “The Big Uneasy” the witches threw a big party. As you all know, the bigger the party on this show, the larger the body count. Hayley takes charge of the werewolves, and ends up in the cross-fire at the party. Marcel makes a move against the Mikaelsons, which ends very badly for Thierry. Monique seems to have taken more of a leading position with the witches, demanding that Genevieve sacrifices herself so that the last Harvest girl can be resurrected. However, Genevieve has another plan and they seem to come to an agreement at the end of the episode, for however long that will last. Josh gets his daylight ring (finally) which will hopefully mean that he’ll be around more now. Elijah and Klaus keep bickering, while across town the vampires choose Marcel’s side in the war.

Best lovers’ spat: It was fun while it lasted but, as I knew it would, the relationship between Klaus and Genevieve ended very badly. He presented her with the cut off hands of someone who tried to steal Esther’s spell book for her. She refuses to help Cami’s uncle because of it. There was no way this relationship would last, I prefer them as enemies anyway.

Best character: I know a lot of people have been disliking Hayley lately, probably because she’s taken a stand against the main characters, Elijah and Klaus. But you have to see it from her perspective. She’s finally found her family, the one she’s been looking for her entire life. Of course she’s going to side with them. Klaus and Elijah are putting their needs and that of the vampires in New Orleans first, while the werewolves are still out in the bayou. Had Hayley not pursued Celeste a few weeks back, her family would still be cursed. When this show first started I thought it would be one threat after the other against her and the baby with the Mikaelsons protecting her. But I like that she can take care of herself. She’s completely justified distrusting Klaus, because we all know Klaus rarely does something that doesn’t benefit himself. I can’t wait to see her become the werewolf queen.
Most pitiful character: I just have to mention this, but I feel bad for the last harvest girl. She’s still dead in a coffin because Genevieve took her spot (which was completely random). At this point I have no doubt that Genevieve will not make it until the end of the season. I just hope that when she is resurrected, they don’t throw her aside like the other girl (who was re-casted btw, what’s the point if you’re not going to use her).

Boldest move: Marcel sure knows how to send a war declaration. But not exactly one of his smartest moves. He had to know there would be retribution. Poor Thierry paid the price for it. Definitely one of the bloodiest scenes on this show to date, after the Harvest that is. However, I have a feeling it’s just the beginning.

Most annoying character: Can we get rid of Monique yet? Her hatred of Davina is really starting to get on my nerves. Saying that Davina hasn’t lost anything, you mean besides her freedom, the guy she liked and the person who used to be her best friend? And now she thinks she can rule the witches. Like Genevieve, she won’t be around next season, mark my words.
Favorite scene: I’m probably alone in this but my favorite scene was the one between Klaus and Hayley. I think it’s sad that this is the first scene they’ve had together in months, especially considering that baby is coming very soon. Klaus seems to like Hayley’s new role with the werewolves. I really hope he doesn’t double cross her. (As you can probably tell by now, I kinda ship them)

Best quotes
Klaus: “Pity, I will miss the sex.”
Hayley: “The last month of pregnancy is all hormones and mood swings, so unless you want me to snap your arm like a twig, I suggest that you tell me what is going on.

If I seem a little off my game it’s because it’s been a while. Also I wasn’t really a fan of this episode, felt very chaotic to me. Anyway, check in again next week for the new review. Let me know in the comments what you thought of the episode.

  1. Thanks Jamie! It was not the best episode I agree. Hope things pick up soon!

  2. I can't stand Monique. I hope they get rid of her.

I actually like Hayley more now. And I like her with either Jackson or Elijah. I don't care which one cause I like all of them.

I felt sorry for Davina in this ep, and I really hope she regains more power.

Gen is not my favorite character. I'd be happier if she was gone.

  3. I do agree in regards to Hayley and the werewolves. I hope she does decide to stick with them. Her entire character arc had been about finding them. She befriended and then lead 12 hybrids to their deaths in exchange for information about where her parents were buried, she then made a deal with Katherine because Katherine told her she could help her find her "family", and then Klaus told her he recognized her birth-mark as belonging to a particular bloodline of werewolves that reside in Louisiana so she headed there to find them. She then learned they had been cursed and was mainly concerned about breaking the curse, and now that she has I hope she stays with them because so far that's really been her only consistent character trait.

I don't have any interest in Hayley having any love interest at all. She's got the werewolf stuff going on and she needs to be more concerned about the fact that she's about to give birth and how she's going to raise her daughter. Her love life should be nonexistent so I loathe that they're trying to put her in a love-triangle with Elijah & Jackson.

I think Genevieve will make it to the end of the season and the last Harvest girl (Cassie) will come back. I don't know if Genevieve live past the season finale, but I expect her to make it at least that far. I know that like Abagail they recast the role of Cassie (and there has been a spoiler about her).

I think Monique is just angry that Davina got her mother killed and made them stay dead for so long. If the Harvest ritual had happened as planned it would have been over quickly and those girls would not have been dead for over 8 months and Celeste probably wouldn't have been able to hijack it. Davina also told Marcel that Jane-Anne was using magic which lead to Jane-Anne's execution by Marcel (and Davina knew that this is what would happen). I can understand that some of the witches are upset that Davina was working with Marcel to execute any witch who practiced magic without Marcel's permission. That said - the fact that she talked about losing her aunt annoyed me. Monique is responsible for Sophie's death - she's the one who killed her.

It's so weird to me that Klaus & Hayley almost never interact when they're about to have a child together. It seems like they'd need to sit down and have a conversation about what their plans are for the child once she's born. Because it's possible Hayley is planning on trying to raise the baby in the swamp and that Klaus' plan is that while she's an infant she should be at home with him (and he'll move Hayley back into his house). They haven't discussed what they want with each other at all or made any sort of arrangement or had any conversations about what they would want to name the child. Even in this episode they didn't talk at all about the future of their child, Klaus just wanted to make sure she wasn't planning on getting in his way and ruining the plans he has with the werewolves. The deal Klaus made was with Jackson so I'm pretty sure he considers Jackson to be the leader of the Crescent werewolves (not Hayley) and I agree with that. Hayley doesn't really just met these people so it would make no sense for her to be their leader.

  4. I love Klaus and Hayley scenes:) It's sad that they don't have more of them. Overall I agree with everything in your review:)
