The 100 - His Sister's Keeper - Roundtable Discussion + POLL

24 Apr 2014

Episode six of The CW's The 100 taught us a lot about a couple of the main characters in the series through flashbacks, as the 100 continue to survive, and begin to thrive, but not without casualties. Thanks to The CW, SpoilerTV has access to screeners for several of the season's episodes, so we can bring you a bit more content than we normally can for many of the other shows we cover. Our roundtable discussion for the sixth episode has questions by Jimmy Ryan, with comments thanks to Daniel van der Veer, Bradley Adams, and Pablo Troncoso Uriarte.

Let's get underway.

Jimmy: The purpose of tonight’s episode was to grow the background of Octavia, and in particular, Bellamy. Do you think this was achieved successfully?

Daniel: Yes, I think the episode served its purpose. We haven’t learned much about either of them besides small pieces of information, but now we get their full backstory. We now know how Bellamy became the big brother that he is today. We know how Octavia’s existence was discovered, and it all adds to that interesting relationship between the siblings. So I think the episode was successful in exploring that dynamic and what lies underneath.
Bradley: I do. We’ve known for a while that it wasn’t a great experience for them, and we had been made to come to our own conclusions. I really hadn’t thought it was this bad. It really helped develop the characters and show us why Bellamy is so protective of Octavia.
Pablo: There were some little details in the storyline that bothered me, such as how it was possible to hide a baby in the Ark when she is obviously going to cry from time to time. It seemed a little bit implausible. But as I said, that’s a detail, I do think it was successful as it echoes what we have already seen of the dynamic Bellamy and Octavia have. Their relationship makes much more sense now that we have seen their background, so that’s a big accomplishment.

Jimmy: From the flashbacks, it’s pretty clear that Bellamy had to work awfully hard for many years to care for Octavia when their mother couldn’t. Do you see both characters in a different light now that you’ve seen what they’ve been through?

Daniel: We always knew that Bellamy was on Earth to protect his sister, but we didn’t know the circumstances surrounding that. Now that we know, I do see Bellamy a bit different as he has a clear reason why he is protecting Octavia. It gives the character more depth, especially because the last scene also shows that it hasn’t been and isn’t always easy to play the big brother. I don’t see Octavia as very different now, but we do get to see the awful life that she had on the Ark.
Bradley: I certainly see Bellamy in a different light now. He has seemed very annoying, but now that we understand why he is like he is, it certainly helps me understand why he is like it. I still think he’s annoying for what he does, but I can appreciate him for why he is that way.
Pablo: I understand Bellamy’s will to protect his sister. It doesn’t come just out of the fact that they are related, there’s much more to it, and I like that there is more depth to it than just the fact that they are family, as many shows just seems to believe that being related is enough justification for being protective. Bellamy played a kind of father figure, he has to withstand the pain that is caring for his sister, and at the same time he grew to love her as if he was her own father, which is quite poignant. We get to see a more caring side of Bellamy while also getting to know where Octavia’s anxiety for freedom comes from.

Jimmy: This episode was the first where we’ve seen multiple grounders, and they were definitely out for blood. The information we have about them is almost nil, so do you have any theories about their being and actions that you want to share?

Daniel: The Grounders don’t know why the 100 are on Earth, and they might not even know that there are any survivors from the apocalypse 97 years ago. They might see the 100 as their enemies because they don’t know what they want. The Grounder that took Octavia is clearly different, yes, but isn’t there always a good guy among the enemies? And maybe he was just looking for confirmation whether the 100 are really a threat, and now that he has seen the hostility of Bellamy, Finn and Jasper, he might just have gotten this confirmation.
Bradley: I was a little torn. The one that took Octavia didn't appear to be like the others. They were out for blood, while Octavia's kidnapper didn't seem to have a motive. Whether he is with them or not, they are obviously a threat to the group. I can't figure out whether these are a few generations down from people who survived, but I am really excited to find out.
Pablo: I think most of the grounders just see these kids as threats, they don’t know where they came from or why they are here, so it wouldn’t be surprising (and it would make sense) that they attacked them out of a feeling of fear and to protect their territory. The one who took Octavia probably just wanted to know who these people are.

Jimmy: Finn grew a lot in tonight’s episode. Raven tells Clarke that he is the reason she is alive, and Finn, in addition to locating the bunker containing the radio controlled car, proved instrumental in tracking Octavia’s whereabouts. Do you think he’s one of the most important people on the ground?

Daniel: Finn is clearly important on Earth, and he has skills and talents that come in handy for the survival of the 100. But I think everyone has his or her own skills that is needed for the 100 to survive. Finn surely cannot be missed. I think he might be one of the members of the Council on Earth would there be any.
Bradley: Yeah, he is. I am a little worried that the point of this is to make him a central character and thus easy for Clarke to fall in love with and easy for the show to create another love triangle. However, he is the kind of character that they need. A strong, intelligent character who is the ideal candidate to lead - yet he seems expendable.
Pablo: Finn is proving to have multiple skills that really come in handy, but I don’t know if he is one of “the most important people in the group”. I think Bellamy’s leadership skills are far more important, otherwise these people would have probably gone different ways and died at some point. Finn is a valuable asset, sure, but I’m just not sure yet if he is the most important of the bunch.

Jimmy: Raven and Finn are back together, but Finn is clearly not over his feelings for Clarke. Do you see the former romance rekindling?

Daniel: Maybe. Whatever it will be, don’t let it become the sole focus of the show. This is a great show and I don’t need any screen time wasted on another CW-ish love triangle. But it is certainly possible that Clarke and Finn will reunite, although Raven might have to die first for that to happen.
Bradley: At this point, I'm not bothered by either or. Finn and Clarke have had good chemistry since the show started; Finn and Raven obviously had something before. But the show has to choose. This is a fantastic show, and it doesn't feel like a CW show. A developed love triangle would change that, and I really don't want that.
Pablo: I don’t know, this is The 100, the show has established that romance is not its core, so I can see it swaying both ways. I don’t think the show will focus too much on the triangle, I think Clarke will probably tell Finn just to go be with Raven and I think he may do so and we won’t hear anything about this romance thing until later in the season, and if it comes to surface it will be somehow organic.

Jimmy: On board the Ark, it’s seems corruption could be rife throughout the guardsmen. Commander Shumway played on Bellamy’s bond with Octavia to get him to kill Chancellor Jaha, and another guard used their mother as a prostitute. Any thoughts on this?

Daniel: Indeed there is and sadly will always be corruption, even in a small and tight society like the Ark. We have already been introduced to Nigel in episode 4, and now we learn who was behind Jaha’s assassination attempt. The interesting question is: does Shumway work alone or are there more corrupt ‘government’ officials? Is there perhaps a mutiny against the Council or the Chancellor? We have also seen Shumway around Kane a lot, which makes me wonder whether Kane had more to do with it.
Bradley: I'm not surprised there's corruption. It happens today so why not 90 years into the future? I'd like to see more of it because this obviously can't be the only corruption on the Ark, and I'd love to see what else the guards and officials have been up to.
Pablo: The Ark is not nearly as perfect as they try it to make it seem. Of course there would be corruption or something like that. I think the power struggle is silent yet evident, and it’s going to surface quite soon, and once it does, all hell will break loose.

Jimmy: Finally, what are you most looking forward to seeing in next week’s episode?

Daniel: In this episode, we didn’t get to see the Ark’s reaction to the shooting stars from Earth. That will definitely be interesting to see, how Jaha and Abby react, how Kane will deal with this, and what the Council is going to do. It also says that we will meet the former Chancellor, which I am also looking forward to. On Earth, I hope and think that Finn will survive. I am excited for the ramifications of the search for Octavia and what the 100 have discovered about the Grounders. Most of all, I am just looking forward to seeing new footage of the show.
Bradley: I can't wait to see Clarke talking to her mother. And, as I said earlier, Finn doesn't seem like he's untouchable. I am unsure whether or not he'll live through the episode, so I'm excited to see how it concludes.
Pablo: On the ground I’m eager to see how Bellamy will deal with the fact that the grounders are out for blood. I want to see what measures he will take. I hope the love triangle stays as quiet as it has, and maybe have an insight on the grounders if possible. As for The Ark, I want to know what Abby and Jaha will do now that they saw the flares! I’m really looking forward to see Abby’s probable ascendance to power now that she has been proven right.

That concludes the roundtable for episode 5 of The 100. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below! If you're curious about something, or want to pick our brains for spoilers, follow us all below and send us a tweet! We'd love to hear from you.

On next week’s episode of The 100, titled 'Contents Under Pressure', Clarke and Raven make contact with the Ark, and Abby guides Clarke through a dangerous procedure in a desperate move to save Finn’s life. Meanwhile, on the Ark, the council is shuffled as Abby is removed from the council, and former Chancellor Diana Sydney takes her place. Jaha reveals to Abby that there are not enough drop ships for everyone on the Ark to go down to Earth, and Kane begins to deal with his guilt over his recent decision

  1. That was pretty good! Not here for that fight between Bellamy and Clark at the end. Like he said, it was their mother's choice to have her. They should be pissed at her, not each other.

    Great episode!

  2. This was a great episode! Not near as awesome as last week, but still pretty good! I like that we get to see the grounders in action this early on.

It has been an amazing experience doing these roundtables with you guys! I hope we may do it again next season if The CW sends us screeners (and there will be next season! This show will get renewed!)

  3. That fight between the two was coming long ago, as brothers you always blame the other for the things that go wrong. Bellamy was the one that took care of Octavia since she was a little baby so no wonder why he is all protective of her, like one of you guys said he feels more like a father than a brother.
The way i see the grounders is that they are scared of the "100" that come down the arc, they dont know what they are as much as the 100 know what the grounders are... both are diferent groups of people trying to work things out and if one feels threatened they will react. That bones structure thing can easily be a cementery or sort of and the guy that took Octavia is one of the "weird" ones that wants to know what the others are instead of killing them.

  4. Another great episode this keep better and better, I agree of the most parts of the review we see a lot of Octavia and Bellamy backstory and we know more about the past of her, the corruption of the ark and the decision of Bellamy to kill the chancellor.

  5. Great episode. I really loved the backstory of Blake family. I wonder who is the father and why he is not here with his kids. (if they are from a same father).

My favourite scene was at the end: Octavia and Bellamy talking. It was so sad to see to people who love each other very much to fight and the smile Bellamy gave Octavia was so painful. I hope we get Octavia caring for her brother - I know she's been through a lot, but now she is behaving a little bit childish and needy.. But I think that is how you behave when you are seventeen, been locked in the floor for 16 years and now you are free.

glad that there was no intense love triangle, they are getting boring these days (vampire diaries cough cough cough).

I actually like this show because it has a lot of small details that says a lot about characters, decisions and life in general.

  6. Bellamy's was good brother that's for sure. Plus with his back story, I can see how he got to where he is at where he views the world with hate. Glad we got to see who told him to kill Chancellor Jaha. The Asian Commander, maybe he was working on behalf of Kane or not idk yet after last episode.
But this guy can't catch a break, some due to his own doing. Basically in regards to his sister, being over protective is not enough you gotta be nice also. And in regards to being a good leader, you got to understand your surroundings. ie who is a treat and who isn't, ask the Why. The only reason he has sustained leading so far is the Fear factor.

I like how Raven seems to know all the sides of Finn, and also her outspoken personality. The awkward moments between Clarke and Raven were fun to watch. But seems like Raven knew something was off the moment Clarke said the Art Supply Store and the way Finn and Clarke looked at each other then. Good one Raven. The reveal was awesome, lol Clarke can't lie, so I'm guessing she lied to the 2nd answer.
They clashed but now with Finn down they will at least understand each other better.

Also In regards to Finn importance that the Discussion people were talking about. I think he is important, but that doesn't mean he can't get hurt. Usually getting hurts just makes people stronger, hope that is the case. Also I sometime feel that the way his character is built and his personality its kinda odd that he doesn't say or do things first where instead Bellamy and Clarke do it instead. He could of after the drop been a good leader too, but it didn't go that way. My thoughts on this is the writers wanted Clarke a female to be the primary leader figure, and Bellamy the adversary leader to give 2 sides to leading.

PS: I wish we see that GG-Good Grounder guy again. I would like to know more about his story. So far I'd say he was 75% good intentions. I'm guessing he wants to get a better understanding of the 100 so he helped Octavia but also Hurt their the Intruders(Finn). Anyway maybe if he speaks, which he should be able to, we will get some answers.

  7. Interesting thoughts about Finn, thanks for sharing! He's the kind of guy who likes to bide his time and wait in the background whilst gaining a tactical advantage over the others. Finding the art supply store/bunker is an example of this. He is pretty badly injured, so I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't make it. If Finn dies, that immediately strengthens the bond Clarke and Raven have - which isn't a bad thing in terms of the story.

  8. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I'm looking forward to more Grounder based activity too - from the look of the promo last night's Grounders were just the beginning!

  9. Hmmm, the Blake father would be an interesting question to have answered. I'm wondering if Octavia and Bellamy are from different fathers, and if either or both could be as a result of their mother's prostitution?

    ReplyDelete
  10. My guess is that Finn will survive, but change because of his injury ( so far he has not been a group person). And by the end of the season he becomes the third leader in the group Bellamy/Clarke on Earth. So there will be a kind of counsel on Earth same as the one on the Arc. Puts a bummer on the romance ... but the show is about survival ...

    ReplyDelete
  11. Exactly what I was referring to when I talked about the Counsil on Earth. Bellamy and Clarke would obviously be a part of that, but I think Finn would too. Maybe add a few others as well (Raven? Octavia? Japser?) and we have our Counsil on Earth.

    ReplyDelete
  12. hey, I don't think that Bellamy is the result of his mother's prostitution. We see her only doing this thing in order to help her children. She does that for Bellamy to get the job in the guard (I guess it is a better job than to be a janitor) and I think that she does that also in order to know when the guards are coming to inspect. She does that to protect Octavia. Actually she is a really interesting character - the poorness of their apartment (they don't have TV, etc. like Griffin's do) indicates that her prostitution is not a way to live a better life, but to protect her children. So we can deduce from this that probably she did not used prostitution before Bellamy.. I am really interested in her situation and I think it has got to do with that that she had an affair with the man who was from the "upper" class in the ark and that is why she is alone. But I'm just speculating, either way - the Blake family dynamic is such an interesting topic. The mother does everything possible - whatever it takes - to take care of her children, but also she pushes Bellamy to care for his sister to and he learns to be very responsible. It is a shame that all his effort backfires really hard. I guess road to hell is paid with good intentions.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I wondering if Kane is the father of Bellamy and Octavia, if he is than make sense he send Shumway ask Bellamy to kill the Chancellor.

    ReplyDelete
  14. i thought about that too (actually Morley and Cusic does have some similarities in their looks and also Kane and Bellamy have similar character traits), but i don't get it - why would he need his own son to kill Jaha? To get him on the dropship? But why shoot Jaha? pretext to get him on the ship? Just to try not to blow his cover that they are his children? I don't know. What do you think about this?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I like your options, but I don't have sure either, I mean Jaha maybe don't care about his son and send off the ark would be a chance to not show weakness or maybe he knew his son more than we expect so he knew Bellamy would do everything to save his sister, but like you said is not clear for now.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah, last night was where we finally get into the Grounder story and that'll be the rest of the season and I'm looking forward to it but it sucks that there won't be any previews or teasers anymore since you guys only seen the first 6 episodes.

I had my thoughts all typed out and for some reason it didn't post? I'll try again and apologies if the original post appears too.

Finn, I think I'd like him to die. I think, as others have pointed out, random people keep dying so we know the place is dangerous but if someone that's been established as a main character were to bite it then we'd really be on our toes for the rest of the season. I think they've managed to establish him as important to the group as a whole and to several individuals within it but have still managed to keep him expendable. I think for the story going forward it'd make it far more interesting if he did die. Not just to get rid of the triangle, although what a great way to end it :) Seriously though, I'd be far more interested in seeing Clarke and Raven try to deal with his death while still dealing with just finding out about each other, going through similar things emotionally but still being somewhat at odds with one another. If the alternative is a full blown love triangle, which seemed to be what Finn was hinting at, I'd much rather he died.

Now, flashbacks... quite different from what I'd imagined. I imagined a life of love and secret happiness, Mama Blake loving her kids and refusing to give Octavia up so they band together to keep her a secret and so on and so forth.... man, was I wrong. Mama Blake was cold! What a thing to burden your young son with. She basically passed Octavia on to him, his responsibility, and had him fully aware of the fact it would be his fault if they got caught and she was floated!

I think "Nature vs Nurture" is one of the central themes of this show. Raised on the Ark under a very strict regime the kids set free on earth are getting a taste of their own natural instincts for a change. I think the same issue is at work on Bellamy and Octavia's relationship. They were always going to care for one another, it's a natural relationship between a brother and sister. But the burden of living a secret life for 16 years, for Octavia to basically not exist outside their home, for Bellamy to have to carry so much responsibility, to know what his mother was doing to protect them, it's not a natural way to grow up. They were both brought up with the threat of their mother being floated and it being their fault of she was. Added to the already questionable way of life on the Ark, they've grown up with a very twisted view of each other and of themselves. Their anger at each other is maybe anger at themselves and there has to be some anger at their mother too, coupled with guilt for her being floated, there's no way they can have a normal relationship. How much of what they feel for one another is natural brother/sister feelings and how much of it feels like a responsibility put on them by someone else. Bellamy may not have had a choice in his life after Octavia was born but she didn't have a choice either. Their mother made their choices for them.

Which brings more questions..... the guard Mama Blake was sleeping with, was he the one tipping them off about the "surprise" inspections, and was he just doing it in exchange for sex, or was he Octavia's father? I find it hard to believe she could hide the pregnancy from the entire Ark, even if she could hide a child.... not without help anyway.

How old is Bellamy? He looked at least 6, if not more, when Octavia was born, which would put him around 23/24?

I'm becoming more and more convinced that Kane's someone's father, because he's a major character and he doesn't seem to have an emotional connection to any of the leads. Jaha's Wells' father, Abby's Clarke's mother, and Kane.. In the Pilot, he had a girlfriend, but I guess Kelly Hu's no longer involved in the show. We saw his mother for 5 seconds, and that's pretty much it. If they want to milk Kane for another season, they're probably going to need to expand his background, and more often than not, that involves adding parents/children/girlfriends to the mix.
Bellamy would make the most sense as his son (for the reasons you all pointed out), but I keep wondering if Raven's not the connection we're looking for. Kane told Abby he wanted to 'save' Raven, he knew about Finn, and it seemed like Raven's mother used prostitution to get an access to the alcohol. And they're all connected to Nygel (Nygel knows Marcus' mother pretty well, and she knew Raven's mother).
However, Raven's mother could still be alive (= drama), while Bellamy's only known parent is dead, so it'd make more sense to explore his past.

Best episode so far. How can Octavia even blame Bellamy when he practically raised her

  20. Finn is my favorite character, so I really hope he survives. Clarke and Bellamy are a little too drama queen´ish for my taste, though I like Bellamy more and more with every episode. Finn is more mellow and is able to be serious, but also to laugh and show passion.
Octavia on the other hand is my least favorite character and last nights episode did not make me like her more. Her behaviour seems childish and she seems to be a little to outgoing for a girl that has been locked up all her life and depended on her brother.
The Grounders are interesting, but I hope they get introduced very slowly. I don´t need them in every episode. I´m hoping for more info on how they get food ect first and also look forward to Clarke talking to her mother.

  21. My Impression is Bellamy depends more on Octavia than she on him, emotionally. He has had no purpos in life, except protecting her. It will be quite interesting to see how he can develope a life on his own. He is a natural leader but I don't think he embraces the postion as part of his nature more as a purpose to protect Octavia.

  22. I enjoy Arrow but I don't rush home to watch it. I think this is the same way. It just doesn't float my boat.

    ReplyDelete
  23. To be honest I like Finn less and less each episode, because I completely agree with Raven, he could have waited more than 10 days... Probably because romance is not the focus of the show it seems quite unrealistic that he would forget his lifetime girlfriend in a few days and fall deeply in love with a girl he just met, even in those extreme circumstances... I love Raven and I love that she's on the ground, but I feel like they could have waited a little longer to develop Clarke and Finn's relationship a big more and then bring Raven in, because whatever happened between Clarke and Finn was superficial compared to the history he has with Raven.... Either way, I'm glad that's not the focus and I like the triangle..

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yea that would be interesting if one such as on the ark forms on land also.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well Octavia is beeing childish, but for me it makes complete sense, the way she was brought up. As long as she is able to develop I can live with it and luckily they have not created a whinny self-pitying character.
Finn is actually the only cautious person in the (main cast) group, I think they need him and would be sad loosing him.
Wondering if Murphy is already terrorizing the grounders.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Finn dying would prove a ballsy move but I'd like them to showcase that some other way, he's one of my favourite characters, so I hope they dont dispense of him just for the sake of it. When they killed Wells I get it was about making a statement, and even if the character had potential I got the mesage and I liked it, but once they've proven no one's safe there's no point on killing so many people. Well's death wasn't just shocking because he seemed to be one of the ones who would at least finish the season but for who did it and why, I hope they start choosing quality of death over quantity because at this rate only 5 people will survive.
