The 100 - Earth Kills - Roundtable Discussion + "What Did You Think" POLL

Apr 3, 2014

Tonight's third episode of The CW's The 100 is the episode in which things on the ground and on the Ark grow in complexity. Thanks to The CW, SpoilerTV has access to screeners for several of the season's episodes, so we can bring you a bit more content than we normally can for many of the other shows we cover. Our roundtable discussion for the third episode has questions by Jimmy Ryan, with comments thanks to Babar Suhail and Daniel van der Veer. The opinion poll is further down below.

Jimmy: This week’s episode ventured into much darker, sinister territory than the previous episodes, and featured some tough decisions that were made by several characters. How well do you think this was executed?

Daniel: I really enjoyed this darker episode and think it was well executed. We got to see a very different side of Clarke when she ended Adam’s life. Bellamy couldn’t do it, so Clarke did it for him. Of course you could debate whether it was better to end his life or to let him suffer in pain. Also, the end scene with Charlotte was very dark yet believable. It wasn’t like her killing Wells had no reason; she did it to get rid of her nightmares. She also saw Clarke do the same thing so it wasn’t like her idea came out of nowhere.
Babar: I really enjoyed the darker side if things both on the ark and the Earth. Clarke ending Atom’s life to relieve him from the pain was a really powerful scene; it showed how damaged she actually is. I also liked the Charlotte storyline.

Jimmy: Flashbacks are clearly the best way of telling the story of life on the Ark before the 100 were sent to the ground. Were you happy with what you saw in this episode, or do you think more was needed?

Daniel: The story told in the flashbacks was an interesting one and I don’t think there was anything else that should have been added. It explored how Wells was involved in Jake’s death, why Jake died and for the first time we saw how the floating process works.
Babar: Yes, obviously flashbacks are the best way to tell us about the past events rather being narrated by a character. I was somewhat satisfied with the flashbacks to the events of Jake getting floated. I hope we see the circumstances under which Clarke was arrested in future episodes.

Jimmy: Two minor characters with what seemed like increasingly important roles in the series were killed off in this episode, which would, no doubt, have come as a bit of a shock to many viewers. What are your thoughts on their deaths?

Daniel: Atom wasn’t really a major character in my opinion, so his death doesn’t really do anything to me. The way he was killed surprised me though. However, Wells’ death was a real shock to me. When I watched the screener, I didn’t really believe what I saw and I immediately had to see the next episode to confirm if Wells really died. Also because Eli Goree is/was basically a series regular, I wouldn’t expect this kind of death till a season finale. Perhaps his storyline (how he was involved in the death of Clarke’s father) was over, but to kill him off shortly after that was a complete shock!
Babar: I didn’t really care enough for Atom so I wasn’t that affected by his death, though the circumstances in which he died were surprising. However, Wells’ death caught me by surprise. After the misunderstandings between him and Clarke were cleared, I dreadingly expected a love triangle to begin between him Clarke and Finn, and I was shocked by his death.

Jimmy: It’s clear Clarke holds an enormous amount of bitterness and resentment from the events that led to her father being floated. Were you satisfied with the character development of Clarke and others in this episode as we learned a bit more about past events?

Daniel: Her father’s death is something that has really made Clarke into who she is. Now that she knows, I am hoping she can become less bitter. Of course the legal system on the Ark isn’t perfect, but there isn’t a lot else that they can do. Now that Clarke knows that it was her mother who let her father be executed, she is no doubt going to be very bitter and hateful towards her. It will be interesting to see how she reacts on that, although it’s probably gonna take a while before we get to see Clarke and Abby interact in the present time.
Babar: It’s natural for her to be resentful for her father doing what was morally ethical and being floated for it. I am interested in how Clarke coming to terms with the truth about her father’s death will play out in future episodes.

Jimmy: The introduction of Charlotte demonstrated that the 100 are comprised of a wider demographic than most would have foresaw. Your thoughts on this?

Daniel: I believe Charlotte is the youngest, and that really showed off. The other characters look a bit older than 18 (although they aren’t), but having younger ones is a welcome change. Not that Charlotte is less like an adult than the older teenagers, because what she did in this episode was not something you would expect from a 13-year old.
Babar: I actually was thinking in the that how come there isn’t anyone among The 100 and I am glad they at least introduced one younger character.

Jimmy: As the series begins to push the boundaries of moral versus law, if you were in the shoes of Jake, Clarke’s father, what course of action would you have taken if you’d been made aware of a critical system failure?

Daniel: That’s a difficult question. I think people deserve to know indeed, but Abby also has a point that chaos will arise once people know. Ultimately I think I would have done the same Jake did. If people are going to have to die, they at least have a right to know.
Babar: I would have went with what’s morally ethical just like Jake did. The citizens of the Ark have a right to know what’s going on about something that directly affects them.

Jimmy: Do you have any other thoughts you’d like to share about this episode or the series in general?

Daniel: This was a great episode! I hope (and partly know) that they can keep up with the dark tone that this episode set. Let’s also hope we get to see more flashbacks of The 100 on the Ark.
Babar: I really liked the introduction of Charlotte. I hope we few to see stories of a few other of The 100. The flashbacks on the Ark were also really well done and I am waiting for more.

That concludes the roundtable for episode 2 of The 100. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below! If you're curious about something, or want to pick our brains for spoilers, follow us all below and send us a tweet!

  1. I was SHOCKED, they killed two characters I thought would be around all season, Adam and Wells. And I happened to like Adam and was starting to like Wells, too. Why????? And I liked Octavia with Adam, so this really sux.

    The ending was definitely shocking.

I thought it was a good ep overall, but wasn't expecting any of that.

  2. Sorry I missed out this week! I'll make sure I participate on the next ones!
Amazing episode, I loved how the show pulled the trigger on Weels, it shows that it is daring. I thought he was going to be the moral compass the whole series, but now we now for sure no one is safe

  3. I'm pissed. Wells had become my favorite and we find out how awesome of a guy he is and he just gets killed like that?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Awesome episode! I'm loving how dark and mature this show is becoming.

Holy shit at Charlotte stabbing Wells and dying! That came out of nowhere and left me in complete shock! I'll miss him. And it sucks even more that him and Clarke JUST repaired their friendship.

Yay at Jasper finally healing! He's one of my favorite characters.

The scene where Clarke was humming while she had to stab Atom in the neck and where Clarke had to watch her father get floated gave me chills. Fantastic scenes.

  5. Kill the black man, typical. I am done, it may not matter, but this show
has lost one viewer. It sad, kill the black.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Seriously? and the guys who died before? everybody's in danger, that's what the producers are saying since months. It's not about the race.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I agree. I feel like they killed him for shock value instead of trying to properly develop his character. I am disappointed they killed him and I just deleted the show from my online TV-schedule. Overall I'm beginning to get really annoyed with CW which is sad because its perhaps the channel I watch the most.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I find this pretty ridiculous because it's a black man who runs the Ark for gods sake! And who made the decision to send the 100 to the ground! If you want a President Obama equivalent on a TV show, you've got one, but you bail out for something as simple as a black character who was murdered?? Jee.

    ReplyDelete
  9. OMG Wells! I can't believe they killed him, I was sure he was going to be the other leg of the love triangle, so I thought he was in for the long run. And being murdered by little Charlotte? I'm still picking my jaw off the floor.
Loved the scene where Clarke helps Atom die, and how when they got back to camp Bellamy told them to give her anything she needed, it's the closest thing to gratitude she'll get out off him.
Now regarding the flashbacks, I guess I more morally ambiguous tan I'd like, because I can totally understand why Abby and Jaha did what they did. Yes, on one side people had the right to know, but I think the consequencies could have turned catastrophic. I mean, all those people stuck in that tuna can knowing they are going to die and there's nothing they can do about it? People would've atrted killing each other in the name of their loved ones to try and get them more time, it would've been complete anarchy. I don't know...
All in all, another solid episode.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think that's what the writers wanted. They said they want us to think that nobody's safe (like in Game of Thrones). I liked Wells and his death was something shocking. I understand the people who are sad because he died, but I don't get who says he was killed because of his race. People always find something to complain about.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I get that. But it hurts no less. I just find it odd that he died, being that he was a major character in the book. There was so much more I wanted to see with the character and I'm actually hurt about it, even though it's only been 3 episodes. I'm definitely feeling uneasy about it.

    ReplyDelete
  12. let me guess !! you're black ?

    ReplyDelete
  13. ...digs out that trusty old Picard Facepalm

    ReplyDelete
  14. There's a 100 of 'em...you had to know quite a few were going to be killed off, and sooner rather than later.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Really? I had no idea. I thought they'd all live forever. Shut up. That is beside the point. Again, like I clearly said, the character was a MAIN character in the book, so no, why would I would think he would die after 3 episodes?

    ReplyDelete
  16. HOLLY MOTHER Bitch is CRAZY! that was unexpected da hell :O i saw Wells as one of the remaining when someone from the ark comes down. I felt looking back at the episode that this flashbacks were needed to at least tell a little bit of story about Wells and understand more what really happened with Clarke`s father.
Sorry but i could stop comparing the fog scene and the death scene to the ones from The Hunger Games books and it was well done, Atom wasnt that much of important but still his dead gets you.
and YEIY! Jasper is alive! o/ I`m happy and btw that flask was rechargable or something?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Isnt the 100 a book? dont blame the CW blame the writter, if he killed of Wells on his book the CW had to do the same.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nope Bailed out because I am sick of the same old program. Keep The president out of this. My friend, it does not matter if you agree. The truth is the truth.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I am a fan of CW as well. Just did not feel right, killing him like that. He was a good kid, took the blame for a horrible deed and stood like a man. It was a bad move to kill him like that.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Seriously, the program follows the same format. No its not about Race, its about a mindset. I have seen this same format over and over again, you may disagree. But its true. I said kill the black man, you said Race. Hey its a movie..OK

    ReplyDelete
  21. the promo says otherwise. I was thinking that too but after i saw the promo he is really dead D: ...

    ReplyDelete
  22. ok I'm going to say it, That ending was Messed up! geez That was dark and then the singing at the end I can you say creepy as hell. Wow. The little girl is really creepy. Then again Wales did say that they were surrounded by murderers and criminals.Still?! Damn!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well, I am done, it did not make me feel right, took on a personal feeling and I did not like it. So I will not watch. I know its just a movie but just don't feel right lost interest. Struck a nerve.. LOL Hey the kid, was a stand up Guy. lol, man a kid gets speared in the chest and lives. Go figure, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  24. You would not get it, Because you can not feel it. No one said the word race but YOU. SMH. It not race it character positioning. Positioning certain Characters to the front and to do that certain characters must die. Does not mean people like it, so I understand you don't get it. SMH. I happen to like Wells character.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I totally Agree, well said!!!!!

  26. The end! Wells Just got London Boulevard'ed!

Right when Charlotte came near him, I knew instant it was gonna happen. Dreams of demons > "slay your Demons" > See how to kill fast > Demon slayed...

Ever Since London Boulevard I have learned to never trust kids, and boy I was convinced yet again.

Its sad, Wells was a good character before like do good only man. So he will be missed. At least his soul will be at peace a bit, knowing he repaired his friendship with Clarke.

Rest of the episode was nice also. I liked the Acidic Fog and the hiding in the ancient van scenario.
It was nice to see that Clarke knows when its right to kill and actually doing it instead of seeing it happen. That moment clearly made Bellamy change his views on her, one for sure is inner respect.

John Murphy(the guy from Continuum) seems like he might not last. But that's just how it was set up it seems. I so wish sometimes he would play a good character.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Krys, I like you..

    ReplyDelete
  28. Nope, I am an African American. You guessed WRONG. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  29. Strange. Why the hell would you even watch the pilot let alone episode 3 if you think The 100 is just a "same old program"? Anyway, I'm glad you won't be beck here to talk about your thoughts next week - given you're this easily offended and pissed off, you definitely won't like next week's episode.

    ReplyDelete
  30. .... says the guy who used the word "black" in the original comment

Shouldn't you have said "Kill the African-American man"?

    ReplyDelete
  31. NO, Jimmy I said what I meant. My reply to Alii Joee was sarcastic. But thank you, I do not need your help thinking for myself or speaking for my own mind for that matter. Thank you anyway for your input. SMH

  32. They had a good point about it having a panic effect.

But that would have only happen because the people on the Ark seem segregated in some way the lesser would think they would be abandon and so on which would cause a problem.

But it could have also worked if it was told in a way, say by the Ark Leader asking for help in solving this problem, a humble request. Its good that Clarke's dad felt people needed to know, and in a sense they do, but in their split society I also feel like it coming from him would mean people would see it as the Ark Council was hiding this info.

Basically both side are justified. But one side does get hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wait a minute, I thought you were pissed off about a black character being killed??!?! Racism is no laughing matter. You're fast becoming the biggest idiot on the internet that I've seen this week. That's quite a tough trophy to win

    ReplyDelete
  34. lol, Who the hell are you talking to my friend. My opinion is just as VALID as anything that comes out of your mouth Friend. Lets not get personal JIMMY, everyone is expressing there feelings. What. you saying the Black man Can't oh sorry African American. I did not attack anyone FRIEND, keep it clean. I am so glad that you do not govern my actions, If I decide to be here. I will. Jimmy.

  35. Well the grounders did cauterized his injures, Wells didnt have anyone to help him.
I found this funny YK cause in the place where there are 95 other people to kill, the girl wanted to revenge her parents and killed Wells, C'mon not even Bellamy did it and here she comes the 14 years old girl and kills him D:. I Wonder what would they do to her if they ever find out it was her, I'm pretty sure Bellamy will protect her if Clarke or someone else decides to do something drastic.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The next episode is based around that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The also killed a white guy in the same episode. It's pretty ridiculous that your are using the race card.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Really great episode as I said. Wells dying came out of nowhere.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ok, so the first two episodes give us very little to nothing and now episode 3 gives us characters dropping like flies! Clark's father having to spacewalk in his "Street Clothes" for trying to tell the ark what they were going to find out eventually was.............extreme. I trying to stay with this show to at least the half way point (of season), but so far the story telling is "Hit or Miss" for me! Poor Adam was doomed either way..........killed by the "Cursed Earth" or by Bellamy for eventually "Tapping" his little sister..........at least Adam would have got a "Happy" if he'd gone the "Litter Sister" route. Oh yeah.........acid fog, seriously? How do we know all these book series being produced (Hunger Games, Divergent, The 100) aren't written by the same author, but using different pseudonyms ie: Stephen King aka Richard Bachman because damn if there aren't a lot of similarities in material. And now for Wells.........the victim of the "Angel Faced Childlike Sociopath" Lizzie................oh wait that's a character on another show..........I meant Charlotte, but you see where I'm going with this, because I'm thinking as I watch the scene "Haven't we done this before?" As far as Wells go(the only Black/Main character on Earth) I can't see how this helps the ratings since it won't go over well with a certain viewer demographic, but on a lighter note whenever a character is killed unexpectedly by a "Angel Faced Childlike Sociopath" we can all say "That character just got LIZZIED!" 4 THE 100 PLUS 1, I am still Nobody!!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Because TV shows based on books don't go exactly by the book; that would not work.

    ReplyDelete
  41. There are plenty of black people among The 100.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Well I'm african ..I was born in africa and I live in Africa
To me black white it's the same...plus I'm color blind ...
So stop playing the victime cause you're black ....nobody is racist here.

    ReplyDelete
  43. ...........on Earth! Like who? Name a character with the 100 that is Black/Main character casting/billing on this series? I've been watching this deal since it started and yet I somehow missed something that obvious! 4 EVER, Nobody!!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I thought it was a great episode it's certainly one way to grab the audiences attention and keep it. By doing it this early people haven't formed too strong an attachment to characters meaning they shouldn't lose too many viewers.
Nice twist about the mum being the one who told on the dad. Can't wait to see how a group of incredibly angry unstable teenagers react to an adult appearing plus how Clarke will react to her.
I still can't get over how it is completely different to the book. They've changed virtually everything they could.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Virtually nothing in the tv show is the same as the book anyway, it shouldn't really be a shock killing off a main character.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Great episode, even though full of sadness and darkness!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Fantastic episode! Left me feeling really uneasy afterwards, but in a good "that ending just threw me" kind of way. It was really sad that Wells died, especially after we found out what a truly amazing person he was. But I'm really glad he made up with Clarke before his death.

I was a little wary about Charlotte from the start, especially after she handed Bellamy the knife as if she was fine with what was coming next (encouraging Bellamy to take Adam's life). Can't wait for the next episode!

    ReplyDelete
  48. What made me think keeping it in secret, unless until there was a possible solution, was a good option is the fact that they've already stablished they are divided by functions, like there's a portion of the population dedicated to farming and food production, another to engeneering, and so on. SO what could someone from farming do to help repair the life support system, when they know nothing of engeneering and computers? That's why I think the more likely scenario would be mass panic and not coopertation, at least the first reaction would be that.
But yes, I agree, both sides are completely justified, because both would probably occur simultaneously, since it depends on the person.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm quite aware of that thanks. Again, missing my point.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Am I the only one who thinks Bob Morley (Bellamy) looks and sounds like Michael Rosenbaum (Lex on Smallville)? Only the hair is wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  51. If this was a white character who died you wouldn't hear this I don't know why everyone brings up race everytime a minority character dies and it's not like they're just killing off black characters it just doesn't make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yeah, they killed three white people in this episode it's just ridiculous everytime a character someone likes who happens to be of a different race they bring up that card.

    ReplyDelete
  53. this was a great ep. sad Wells had to die like that.
This ep did alot to show the kind of person Bellamy is. and I LOVE it. :)
the way he looked at Clarke after she took his knife and killed Atom gave me serious chills. i see them becoming closer in the future. mayb season 2

    ReplyDelete
  54. I wasn't surprised by Wells' death I knew Charlotte was going to be the one to do it thanks a lot Bellamy for telling a girl to slay her demons she's a kid so she probably figured he meant she should really kill them for real. His name is Atom it just sounds like they're saying Adam because it just sounds the same.

    ReplyDelete
  55. It is brought up because Wells was the only black male out of The 100 that would be considered a main character. And going by the reviews of those who read the book, this character was meant to live longer because he was one of the three main leads. Atom's death doesn't put a dent in a show that already has four leading characters that are white.

When you're a viewer that is a minority in this society, having POC characters killed off for the sake of 'an example' is just discouraging and a nuisance. It makes it hard to enjoy television and movies when you know that a character's race is the mark of death or underdevelopment for them. This doesn't affect white viewers because there will always be more opportunities for white characters regardless of how many are killed, especially if they are male.

    ReplyDelete
  56. 2014 and people still refuse to 'get it' or they just ignore it.

    ReplyDelete
  57. WOW I did not see that comming. I believe Clarke and Bellamy created a little monster. This episode was so good!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Babar, it's not simply that the character is black but that he was involved in an interracial relationship. A black male/white female embrace or kiss is a certain sign of impending doom for the black male. This is a simple truism of American TV and what is acceptable for American audiences. Unless the black male is an utter buffoon or the character is portrayed as essentially gay. My guy on TTP survived after his affair with the hot white chick Tomorrow person who turned superhero but only because he's portrayed as an Asian buffoon. IMHO

    ReplyDelete
  59. I was shocked they killed Wells so early. I didn't expect him to die this season at all. My daughter was so angry. She says that's it for her and this show. He was the only one she really liked and the senseless way he was killed made her say enough. I don't know how they can call this The 100 when 4 people died in this episode alone (I'm assuming the lost couple died from the burns they undoubtedly suffered when the "fog" overcame them). With the 2 that died on landing, they are now The 94 (unless I missed someone) and this is only episode 3. I haven't found too much originality in this show. I even laughed when Finn found a "hatch", I mean car door. How fortunate that he found it before they were chased by the deadly "smoke monster" ...er I mean acid fog monster.

    ReplyDelete
  60. What are you even talking about? There was no "relationship" b/w Clarke and Wells. And there are plenty of interracial relationships on American TV

    ReplyDelete
  61. 3 episodes in, on a CW show, to a character who would be considered a LEAD from the books. Umm, yes it is a shock, imo so please stop trying to invalidate how I feel. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Why kill the black guy between the 100, why, why? Sometimes I think my phellas of the same collor of U.S. are overreacting about black been killed in movies and series, but this time c'moooooooon, why kill Well right now, his is about to turn a great character.

I like the episode, but I hate the ending.

    ReplyDelete
  63. If they wanted to show that no one was safe they should have killed Clarke, but then you would not find out what shirtless guy she will hook up with. The writing on the show is not that deep, they should not try to be something that they are not.

Their action came off as more than a little racist to me. The only major black character on the planet is killed like an animal, typical.

All the did is offend a part of their audience for the sake of a cheap gimmick.

    ReplyDelete
  64. The problem is that this character was the only black that had a voice on the planet earth, so that is what makes race an issue. I don't know if you can ever have the ability to understand this point. It must be nice for some to be able see their group represented everywhere they look. :-)

Like his killer (the little blond girl) said, he was not killed for what he did, but because of the way he looked, his appearance. Some people view race and family as the same thing, so you could argue that he was killed because of his race. This is the logic that the writers create by the words that they put in the mouth of the killer.

    ReplyDelete
  65. The only major black character? the show just started, give it time and please take a look at the promo of next promo, you'll see at least another black character, and probably there are others, but for budget reasons you won't see all the 90+ teenagers still alive.
Jaha is the leader of The Ark and he's black. Wells paid for being his son (I know it's unfair). There's nothing racist about the show. Other people died earlier, and they weren't black.

I see a lot of sad comments about Wells' death, that means that it became a favorite character in 3 episodes. It's like he was the Ned Stark (Game of Thrones) of The 100. I think that means a lot to the actor (Eli Goree).

    ReplyDelete
  66. The way they killed Wells was not daring, it was a cheap gimmick. I hope that show will be canceled soon.

    ReplyDelete
  67. The way that the writers killed off Wells does not show their color blindness, but it shows there complete tone deafness at best. If they just replace him with another black face it will be more disrespectful. The damage is done. I'm not watching this program anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  68. SMH, not blaming anyone, did you read the book?. Even if the book says KILL Wells, I stand by my point. LOL, I have seen that plot over and over. its no big deal. Just my opinion and everyone has and opinion. I wasn't looking for support, just stated my opinion. I am not getting paid from that movie. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Ron, anyway. LOL she was dreaming having a nightmare. Well is not dead..lol I hope.

    ReplyDelete
  70. DID you get that?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Watch your mouth, SHIT FOR BRAINS. Do not attack me or call me names. Your vision is so narrow thats why you missed so much on the internet. Becareful who you put your mouth on SHIT HEAD

    ReplyDelete
  72. The ratings on this show are declining every week, 33% down from its start so far. Is it a good idea for them to alienate part of their audience. Maybe they think the shock value of the gimmick of killing off Wells will bring more people to watch the show. I won't be one of them watching.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Of course you wouldn't hear it if it was a white character because there would be another white character in the next scene.

    ReplyDelete
  74. There's more than one black character on The 100 and even on the Ground since the Pilot.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Aside from the Chancellor, please point them out to me? Not just one or two that are off into the background with no relevance. No matter what you say the situation is not the same and if you can't see the obvious difference in the two then I'm wasting my time here.

  76. I'm black, I was loving the show, smh. Wells was the character I liked, it makes me not even want to watch the show anymore. And he didn't die in the book, why does the creator of this film have to do that. You kill the only likeable black person on the show. Who the Heck am I suppose to like now?? The gurl, the asain, all the bad kids, the weak Chancellor, the dude wit the sister??? Come on. Showing the black people no love. I'm not tryna pull the race card, but can I have a black character please? Or don't give me the character I like and just kill him for no good reason at all. Whatever, I won't be watching it, I'm done
