NBC: +10, CBS: + 4, CW: -25, Fox: -39, ABC: -59

-Winners:
“NCIS” (CBS), “The Voice” (NBC), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (CBS)
-Honorable Mention:
“Chicago Fire” (NBC)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Glee” (Fox), “The Mindy Project” (Fox), “Trophy Wife” (ABC)
———-
-Ratings Breakdown:
It was another clean Tuesday overnight sweep in households for CBS with its line-up of “NCIS” (#1 for the evening: 11.0 rating/18 share), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (9.4/15) and an encore of “Person of Interest” (5.3/ 9), which bested an original installment of competing “Chicago Fire” on NBC (4.5/ 8) by 18 percent despite not being original. Already renewed “Chicago Fire,” which built by 25 percent from sitcom “Growing Up Fisher” (#2: 3.6/ 6 at 9:30 p.m.), is a lock for leadership in all the key demos, however.
“The Voice” was the standout on NBC, of course, with a second-place 7.5/12 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m., which will top the night in adults 18-49 (and other young adult demos). Thanks to “The Voice,” lead-out comedies “About a Boy” (#2: 4.5/ 7 at 9 p.m.) and aforementioned “Growing Up Fisher” (#2: 3.6/ 6 at 9:30 p.m.) bested two more episodes of “The Mindy Project” on Fox (9 p.m.: #4: 1.7/ 3; 9:30 p.m.: #4, 1.8/ 3) by an average of 131 percent. Note to Fox: You may want to reverse your decision to renew sophomore “The Mindy Project,” which is just not an option (and never will be).
“About a Boy” and “Growing Up Fisher” also outdelivered competing ABC comedies “”The Goldbergs” (#3: 3.0/ 5), which is a lock for renewal, and “Trophy Wife” (#3: 2.2/ 3) by an average of 56 percent. As that old saying goes, lead-in still does matter.
Earlier in the evening on Fox was fading “Glee” at yet another series low, with a 2.0/ 3 from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, that was 43 percent below year-ago occupant “Hell’s Kitchen” (3.5/ 6 on 4/09/13). Future episodes of “Glee” this season will feature Oscar winner Shirley MacLaine in a multi-episode arc.
ABC’s disappointing “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” increased by nine percent from one week earlier, with a 3.8/ 6 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m. And a repeat of “Resurrection” closed the night for the alphabet net after aforementioned “The Goldbergs” (#3: 3.0/ 5) and “Trophy Wife” (#3: 2.2/ 3) with a 1.5/ 2 at 10 p.m. As a reminder, “Celebrity Wife Swap” will return on ABC in the Tuesday 10 p.m. hour next week.
The CW capped off the evening with encores of “The Originals” (#5: 0.7/ 1) and recently introduced “The Hundred” (#5: 0.6/ 1).
With Carson Daly” closed the night with a 0.8/ 4 at 1:30 a.m.

Oo yay AoS increased and it tends to adjust up in the finals as well, wonder what it got.
ReplyDeleteI'd guess a 2.2 or maybe even a 2.3
ReplyDeleteso would I it sat at 3.5/6 last week and that gave it a 2.0
ReplyDeleteThat would be good.
ReplyDeletejust the fact it went up after last week is a victory and really is indicative of the quality of its episodes recently
ReplyDeleteAoS increased by 9%? Considering all the hype after Captain America 2, I'm not exactly surprised.
ReplyDeleteI would've honestly been more shocked if it didn't go up at all,
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, I wouldn't that much. Hulu did accidently release it early and I'm sure that some people caught it before they took it down.
ReplyDeleteLooks like another 'ouch' for Fox.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why Mindy hasn't picked up an audience by now. It really is my favorite comedy but then again, I am not a fan of the big shows like HIMYM or Big Bang but millions of people love them.
ReplyDeleteWow Marc, somebody is bitter about the Mindy renewal. Somehow I think Fox knows what they're doing better than you (or Tom at TVBTN) do.
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah that 44 episode renewal was genius, shipping off your forth highest rated comedy to TBS while keeping losers like Mindy and B99. How about that renewal of TF? AI missing Top 20 both nights last week in demo and audience. Yeah, FOX knows exactly what their doing.
ReplyDeleteYes, but but only a small percentage of those would be Neilsen viewers.
ReplyDeleteReilly likes TMP.
ReplyDeleteOnly 9% increase for AoS. That's disappointing.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I'm let down by that.
ReplyDeleteI was expecting more considering the response the Captain America movie's getting.
Hopefully the positive reviews about this episode convince people to catch up and watch next week.
I actually find that disappointing.
ReplyDeleteIm not...for a couple of reasons primarily the fact that a lot of normal followers of the show did not watch it last night because they have not seen captain america two, and that could be one of the reasons abc is rerunning it next week, into the brand new episode so people can see the movie
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's a disappointing increase, but it's an increase nonetheless. I was a little shocked it was only 9% to be honest.
ReplyDeleteYes, because Fox can't make a programming mistake. Yeesh.
ReplyDelete"Midnight" -- do you go through your days blindly trusting empty suits to make the best possible decisions? Or are you the typical Mindy Kaling fan -- angry, bitter, lonely and defensive.
He better like unemployment.
ReplyDeleteI believe that businesspeople whose multi-million dollar enterprises depend on sound decisions are better able to ascertain the financial pros and cons of renewal decisions than so-called ratings pundits who have limited data anyways.
ReplyDeleteKeep dreaming.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I guess I should short 21st Century Fox's stock. Renewing The Mindy Project for a third season means their stock is going to go WAY down. They may even default on their corporate debt. If only they hadn't made the huge mistake of renewing The Mindy Project!
ReplyDeleteLooks like I was right about "angry, bitter, and defensive." (I'll reserve judgment on "lonely.")
ReplyDeleteLook, the show is horrible. And horribly low-rated. Mindy Kaling has been licking Reilly's feet in the press at every opportunity to keep her show on the air, and the man buckled. (It doesn't help that he has nothing else worthwhile to program on Tuesdays.)
Remember: this is the same Kevin Reilly who triumphantly predicted three years ago that Fox would soon have TWO nights of four-show live-action comedy blocks. Now, it doesn't even have half of one. Or a quarter of one.
But keep telling yourself Fox executives know exactly what they're doing. Lull yourself to sleep with that. Soak in the fail of it. Seriously.
Look at 21st Century Fox's 2013 financial statements: broadcast television revenue increased by more than $50 million compared to 2012. Given the factors within their control, I would say they're doing a decent job. Or would you rather they be more aggressive about cancelling lower-rated shows and lose money instead? And what happened to the widespread "I won't try Fox shows because they always cancel them" complaint?
ReplyDeleteI'll cede you the defensive part, not so much the rest. And yet it appears that you created your disqus account specifically to respond to my comment. You didn't even have previous comments until then. It seems someone else is just a shade more angry here.
Tonight's the night for The 100 (without a new episode of Arrow as lead-in). I really hope it will do well enough :)
ReplyDeleteOUH for Glee!, another series low?
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine the Ratings for S6...
Yeah, you've gone off the rails.
ReplyDeleteTry to read this very slowly, so it sinks in. "The Mindy Project" is a subpar show. With sinking ratings. Which has lowered its ad rate for next year. That's why it should never have been renewed, and why those who renewed it were in error.
Trying to mask the failure of The Mindy Project by pointing to financial statements, which include things like sports revenue, American Idol, etc., is chicanery.
You need to ask yourself why you worship at the altar of programming executives, and why you took Marc Berman's analysis so personally. Did you feel his words about "The Mindy Project" were direct attacks on you? Do you actually think posters on this board make decisions because of you?
That's a matter for a psychoanalyst, not a message board.
SPOILER: AOS
ReplyDeleteIm not the biggest AoS fan. I get frustrated and wish it were more. But, last nights ep was great! If this is the direction the show is heading (edgy tone, more Coulson/action) then im in! Wish May were was the traitor though, I never liked her. Guess they listened to all the Ward haters...
No need to be an asshat.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who saw last weeks ep should definitely tune in tonight. Hope some word of the mouth will steady the shows numbers. Yeah tonight will be a test for the Hundy...
ReplyDeleteI never made statements about the quality of The Mindy Project, which I personally find to be good but not great.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you have a crystal ball and can tell me the ad rates for next year. Do you also have next week's lottery numbers? Ad rates are in part determined by other sub-demos like 18-34 and wealthier households, which is part of what I meant when I said that ratings pundits don't have all the data.
I find it difficult to make a certain claim about the show being renewed in error when you know little about its costs. If networks could replace every below average show with pilots at no cost, they would. But advertising new shows is expensive, and as far as I know, Mindy Project hasn't aged to the point where the stars' salaries become burdensome.
Sports revenue is a different segment in financial statements. I specifically highlighted broadcast television.
My original comment was: "Wow Marc, somebody is bitter about the Mindy renewal. Somehow I think Fox knows what they're doing better than you (or Tom at TVBTN) do." This was not a personal defense against their comments. My point is that Marc and TVBTN write and report to predict cancellation and renewal decisions. They have missed more than a few shows recently, indicating that the framework under which they are operating is not entirely accurate. The fact is that unless you have the detailed financial data for ratings, sub-demos, costs, and alternatives like pilots, you can't know that renewing the Mindy Project is a mistake. Maybe it is. And yet your and Marc's attitudes claim to know everything with certainty. The only real certainty is that Fox has better data than you do.
Considering the quality of that specific episode, too, it's great that it went up specifically there! :) It may go higher further from this point, especcially since there'll be no more hiatus from what I've heard! :)
ReplyDeleteOff. The. Rails.
ReplyDeleteThanks, douche!
ReplyDeleteFast Nationals are trickling in. Looks like lots of lows for all of the comedies. MAOS didn't bump up either. It's probably flat with last week or it might be down.
ReplyDeleteAoS actually dropped. Didn't see that coming. Half hours: 1.8/1.7
ReplyDeleteWow a 1.7 for Agents of SHIELD?! I don't by that rating for a second

after a 9% increase from a 2.0 last week, how can it be at a 1.7?
ReplyDeleteFinally a rise for NCIS! And they deserved it, it was a good episode!
ReplyDeletelike I guess ratings really dont make sense to me whatsoever, how can a show increase 9% in the overnights but yet go down in both viewers and 18-49?
ReplyDeleteNoooooo SHIELD at a series low :(
ReplyDeleteI have no idea. I don't get the overnights stuff really, I just pay attention to the 18-49 demo, which is what counts.
ReplyDeleteDon't know either, but the opposite happened to NCIS. It was down a tenth from last week's overnights yet rose in both audience and demo.
ReplyDeleteThe total audience may have increased but the number of people 18-49 who watched may have decreased.
ReplyDeletethey both decreased...
ReplyDeleteHH increased, but A18-49 didn't. The two are not really related.
ReplyDeletesucks that SHIELD is gonna get cancelled due to really bad ratings.
ReplyDeleteMostly all the good shows on Tuesday hit a series or season low last night...
ReplyDeleteHH and A18-49 ratings are not really related.
ReplyDeleteMonths ago I read a list about the shows with the the wealthier audience and The Mindy Project was included (with the other low rated Parks & Recreations). I guess that If Fox and Nbc decided to renew them, it must be because they still make them earn money.
ReplyDeleteIt won't be cancelled.
ReplyDeleteHow do you know? there ratings show that it will.
ReplyDeleteLook 8:00 p.m.
ReplyDeleteABC – Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Viewers: 5.03 million (#3), A18-49: 1.8/ 6 (#3)
It's actually 1.8 but still it's a low i was hoping to go up
I'm hoping it adjusts to above a 1.8 at least
ReplyDeleteWTF? After CA:TWS and all the insane buzz for SHIELD, we get this? :-(
ReplyDeleteIt better adjust up 2 tenths again, but even if it does, very disappointing.
Disney owns ABC and Marvel, so the won't cancel AoS. Also, this is ABC's second highest rated freshman show.
ReplyDeleteDespite ratings that are below average? Thats weird.
ReplyDeleteRead my reply to your comment below.
ReplyDeleteNot really that below average.
ReplyDeletewhich I did thanks for that! Im hoping it adjusts up somehow! these ratings are a bit shocking to see
ReplyDeleteNo, but HH and total audience are, right?
ReplyDeleteYep, I was surprised when I saw the numbers.
ReplyDelete4 million views! i call that below average, and with a 1.7 rating.
ReplyDeleteYeah because a poorly rated show like Mindy being renewed doesen't stick out as a sore thumb to anyone else.
ReplyDeletewow AOS under 5 million and with all the hype it its a low- what a disappointment
ReplyDeleteABC's average this season is 1.56, so it's above the average.
ReplyDeleteDo you knw Abc's average rating? Doesn't seem so...
ReplyDeleteI didn't even notice that The Voice was so low. Also, a 0.5 for a Resurrection repeat is not too good either.
ReplyDeleteAlmost 5 million and one episode doesn't decide the fate of a show
ReplyDeleteSo your saying it'll be renewed? its seems like long odds
ReplyDeleteserialized shows do not repeat well, no matter what
ReplyDeleteNice return for Chicago Fire. Decreased competition helped but that's no guarantee people will tune in.
ReplyDeleteThe only serialized show that does repeat well is Greys Anatomy.
ReplyDeleteGA is not serialized.
ReplyDeleteCheck out Cancellation Predictor table for a mathematical model of what is likely to be renewed/cancelled or in danger
ReplyDeletehttp://www.spoilertv.com/2013/09/spoilertv-cancellation-predictor-table.html
I thought it was.
ReplyDeleteOh god Trophy Wife... when you thought it couldn't be any lower...
ReplyDeleteyes it is actually
ReplyDeleteShame people gave up on Shield. Honestly I dnt blame them. The show was limping and now it's getting into groove but it's so late in the game....
ReplyDeleteWell, not really I think. The medical cases seem to change every week with some exceptions. The only thing that's serialized is character and relationship stuff.
ReplyDeleteThats what happened to me. I gave up on it. I thought it was gonna be really good but IMO it was boring.
ReplyDeleteI dont get why SHIELD is not in danger of being cancelled, all the tv sites say it's in no danger. When you got NCIS and VOICE taking up nearly 30 million views and your only getting 4-5 million views, you really got a problem. What can they do with a second season if you barely an audience to show for it? it doesnt make sense.
ReplyDeleteSHIELD has a tendency to adjust up with the final ratings, so I'm hoping it will adjust up to its series low or above it, Im actually still in shock about this but I will say this could be a danger of having a show so intertwined with a movie that's been in theaters for a single weekend, many regular SHIELD watchers did not tune in because they havent seen the movie yet
ReplyDeletePeople quit the show because it was boring, once they leave it is hard to get them back
ReplyDeleteBecause the total viewers are irrelevant. Only the 18-49 demo matters and AoS is above ABC's 18-49 demo average of 1.56. Since it is outperforming all the other freshman dramas, that puts it squarely in renewal territory.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing is, its going to get cooked by the Voice and NCIS in the 8:00 PM timeslot, unless they fix it, there going offline in 2015
ReplyDeleteThat may be true, but either way, speaking it terms of this season, it performed well enough in the demo and will get its renewal. I'm sure ABC will look into where to place it in the fall to give it a better chance and hopefully gain some viewers. I can see a retooling of the show and a schedule change in AoS future for the fall.
ReplyDeleteThats true... So i'm sure everyone can agree that despite hitting series lows, it will still get a second season.
ReplyDeleteyep, its boosted the previous timeslot occupant by 42% (which is sad) and is still number 1 with men 18-49
ReplyDeleteThis may be wishful thinking here but twitter is saying a number of ABC affiliates had service issues last night, so maybe it will adjust up?!
ReplyDeleteNot on FOX. It's doing better than Glee and not substantively worse than New Girl or B99.
ReplyDeleteBerman happens to have terrible taste in television. He's big into Survivor and the schlocky CBS comedies and seems to have a bias against the actual good comedies on TV (Community, Parks, the FOX threesome, etc).
So you'll see him argue vehemently in favor of "Mom" but take shots at the FOX or NBC sohws.
Does that even make a difference? so what if its good with men? its not going to help it decide its fate of being cancelled or renewed.
ReplyDeleteObviously overall 18-49 is better, but that is still a very hard to reach demo, and ABC will not want to cancel it so they will tout that as its reason
ReplyDeleteWhen do you think we will find out its fate? Late April or Early May?
ReplyDelete18-49 men is a subset demo of 18-49 and is a very coveted demographic. heavily factors into renewal decisions.
ReplyDeleteHousehold is the number of houses where the show was watched, literally, while total viewers is the number of people that watched. Exactly how they can tell this type of stuff (also, male or female viewers, etc.) has always been unclear to me. I can't imagine their measurement is very accurate.
ReplyDeleteWhen the Upfronts come out in May.I believe its somewhere in between May 12 thru the 16th this year.
ReplyDeleteIts not considered a serialized show, not like Fringe,Lost,or Person Of Interest. Its more like a night time soap just like Revenge and Scandal.
ReplyDeleteYou can the dates of all the Upfront presentations here

May 13th, oh boy... SHIELD has that long to get there ratings up or there on the chopping block.
ReplyDeleteThey can tell based on a statistical sampling of the nielsen households, the same way a gallup poll for politics is run. For example, in a nielsen household with a set box (connected to the t.v.) each member of the nielsen family has their own code that they input into the box when they watch a show, thus identifying who is watching the show when, how old they are, and their gender. Once the data is gathered in this way, it is split into its respective demographics (18-34/49 male, 18-34/49 female, overall 18-49, total viewers and HH) and then they extrapolate how many of each their are nationwide using a statistical sampling analysis. You would actually be very surprised how accurate it is and how small the margin of error is.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but i think ABC will come to a decision long before then.
ReplyDeleteAoS was the big bet show this season with this ratings? i think they will cancel in 1S
ReplyDeleteNot a chance. Marvel and Disney own ABC, they'll keep it going.
ReplyDeleteNot a chance.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Hydra is winning.
ReplyDeleteStill hasn't been adjusted up yet.
ReplyDeleteI expect AOS to go up! but when?
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of people are going to wait for the entire season to be over and then binge. Which, in the long run, would be a good thing. The series is a slow, careful build up. Those who were impatient for the climax will be able to appreciate the layers without having to wait. I know if I wasn't watching a show, I wouldn't jump in this far into a season for any reason - especially not one that is serialized... I want to see the second season premiere ratings - I'm betting that's where we'll see a jump...
ReplyDeleteGreat for AoS - a totally under appreciated show to now. And I feel bad for Glee. Moving it to New York and slashing the cast is the best thing they've ever done for the show. It feels revitalized to me... too little too late perhaps.
