Respectable Sampling for “Bad Teacher” and “Black Box” Openers
Household
Rating/Share
CBS 6.5/11
ABC 4.2/ 7
Fox 3.7/ 6
NBC 2.1/ 3
CW 1.3/ 2
-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Thursday 4/25/13:
NBC: + 5, CW: – 7, ABC: -16, CBS: -19, Fox: -36
—–
-Winners:
“The Big Bang Theory” (CBS), “Grey’s Anatomy” (ABC)
-Respectable Sampling:
“Bad Teacher” (CBS), “Black Box” (ABC)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Parks and Recreation” (NBC), “Saturday Night Live: SNL Shorts” (NBC)
—–
Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led this fourth Thursday in April thanks to “The Big Bang Theory,” of course, which topped the night at an 11.0 rating/19 share in the household overnights at 8 p.m. Next was time period dependent “The Millers” at a dominant 6.3/10 at 8:30 p.m., followed by veteran “Two and a Half Men” (#1: 6.1/10 at 9 p.m.) into a second-place 5.1/ 8 for the series-premiere of “Bad Teacher” at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, “Bad Teacher” opened at a hefty 42 percent above the season (or series) finale of “The Crazy Ones” one week earlier (3.6/ 6 on April 17), and retention out of “Two and a Half Men” was solid at 84 percent. All in all, consider this positive sampling for “Bad Teacher” (which, from a quality standpoint, leaves little to be desired).
The second series-premiere last night was ABC drama “Black Box,” which finished No. 2 behind competing “Elementary” on CBS (5.3/ 9) with a 4.6/ 8 in the overnights at 10 p.m. “Black Box” will, in all likelihood, win the time period in the key demos. The retention out of lead-in “Grey’s Anatomy” (#2: 6.0/ 9 from 9-10 p.m.) was respectable at 74 percent. And there was only a four percent decline at 10:30 p.m. (4.6/ 8 to 4.4/ 8). But given the massive promotion, “Black Box” should have opened stronger. One week earlier, “Scandal” concluded the season with a 7.5/13.
Earlier in the evening on ABC was an encore of “Jimmy Kimmel Live: Behind the Scandelabra” at a modest 2.1/ 3 (#3t) from 8-9 p.m.
In season-finale news, a one-hour installment of NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” featuring a cameo appearance by First Lady Michelle Obama, scored a 2.1/ 3 from 8-9 p.m., which was actually up by 24 percent from the abysmal 1.7/ 3 at 8:30 p.m. one week earlier. But a 2.1 in the household overnights is certainly nothing to crow about, and these ratings will be no better next season no matter where “P&R” airs.
Next on NBC was two-hour “Saturday Night Live” special (themed “SNL Shorts”) at a mere 2.0/ 3 from 9-11 p.m.
Elsewhere, Fox was equal to one week earlier with its pairing of “Hell’s Kitchen” (#2: 3.6/ 6) and “American Idol” (#3: 5.2/ 8), which dipped by 35 percent from the 8.0/13 in the 8 p.m. hour on the year-ago evening. And The CW scored typical overnight results with already renewed dramas “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.5/ 2) and “Reign” (#5: 1.1/ 2).

ReplyDeleteTVD seems up from last episode,probably 0.8.As for reign,expecting 0.5,fearing 0.4!!
ReplyDeletegreat for TVD, not so for Reign
ReplyDeleteIs it a given that Black Box will outperform Elementary at 10pm? I know it does mediocre numbers, but I can't imagine Bad Teacher skewed that old as a lead-in.
ReplyDeleteOvernight rating of 1.1 for Reign? what is happening? it's renewed, but I'm a bit worried anyway.
ReplyDeleteI hope it still gets a 0.5.
I give TBB another 4 weeks before it tanks.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing TVD is back to its usual 1.0 range. I'm a little shocked at The Black Box. Those promos were awful. The reviews were abysmal.
ReplyDeleteLast night's episode was really bad,i'm not surprised.
ReplyDeleteI am very surprised that the overnights are this positive for Bad Teacher and especially Black Box. Curious about the demos
ReplyDeleteI bet ABC is wishing on their shining star to have Scandal back as soon as possible.
ReplyDeleteI think they shortened it because of the Kerry's pregnancy and it's a conflict with its' filming schedule.
ReplyDeleteThere was a problem with the sound on Vampire Diaries in Chicago last night. I gave up once I realized I wasn't the only one not hearing any dialogue... I'm not sure if it was an issue live or just with dvrs; also not sure how/if it will affect the final ratings.
ReplyDeleteI don't think sound issues affect ratings
ReplyDeleteYes, Kerry's pregnancy caused the shorten season. They thought about filming the other four episodes without her, but since she's way too important to the show, they couldn't figure out how to do even one or two without her in it. It's kind of weird that Scandal has only produced 47 episodes in three seasons.
ReplyDeleteOk Bad Teacher did better than I thought it would (I was thinking 1.7/1.8, but Black Box is actually in line with what I thought.

What is going on with The CW -_-
ReplyDeleteScandal had 7 episodes in Season 1 and this season has been shortened to 18, so that explains the low episode count in 3 seasons.
ReplyDeleteEvery week I've been saying that I'm positive that Arrow/TVD will bounce back up but they aren't. Damn.
ReplyDeleteI guess when TVD viewers stop watching the show, they really do stop watching it.
ReplyDeleteWow, are TVD ratings finally catching up to its quality?
ReplyDeleteYess Reign, please don't adjust down (even though this episode wasn't that good)
At leas Reign didn't get another 0.4.
ReplyDeleteI subscribe the question. Most shows drop a lot in spring but it seems abnormal the way the CW shows are being affected by the drops, especially after the amazing fall they've had. The only good point is that the 100 looks better and better with its ratings being comparable to the cw's other big 4. But I don't understand why every single one of their shows was this much affected.
ReplyDeleteSpring declines (it has never been kind to the CW) and I know there were lots of pre-emptions but I'm not sure if that's really a factor or not.
ReplyDeleteYess Reign up!Ouch st VD at 0.7, but this season is bad.
ReplyDeleteI understand that. I'm just saying that if they don't start ordering extra episodes in future seasons, they show will "age" beyond it's episode count. I wonder if ABC will try to get those four episodes from S3 into S4. The sure could use them - even having a couple of two-hour "events" in lieu of a GA repeat or whatever filler they use between fall and spring seasons.
ReplyDeleteI know that. I just think ABC is missing Scandal dearly.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural bounced back, Arrow won't bounce back (I don't think), I'm actually surprised at The Vampire Diaries, I thought they would bounce back, they did last year.
ReplyDeleteThey can do what Grey's Anatomy did in Season 2 and add the extra episodes to next season.
ReplyDeleteWow, wow, just. Vampire Diaries ratings are not good. I don't think The CW will be happy that the show hasn't bounced back.
ReplyDeleteThat's true, it's not like they enjoyed shortening the season, it's still 1 of their top shows.
ReplyDeleteApparently Marc was wrong. By a little bit, at least.
ReplyDeleteScandal would at least double the numbers Black Box did last night. It's sad.
ReplyDeleteWell, it may just be spring numbers.if every CW show had ratings equal to its quality, a lot of them would be cancelled. Supernatural, for example, would probably be in the 0.1 range, if not less, if quality factored in the ratings.
ReplyDeleteBut the extra episodes were already shot from S1. But since Grey's would air into the summer, they were moved to Season 2.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but it's not like they have much of a choice and they can't put it behind Grey's for obvious reasons.
ReplyDeleteExept may be for SPN. But yes, I am very surprised TVD and Arrow stuck at 0.7. Hmmm...
ReplyDeleteThey could still shoot the extra episodes for next season if they increased the episode order.
ReplyDeleteWay to bush #1 show on network on its 9th season. Your opinion about SPN quality is highly noted, but very subjective.
ReplyDeleteshipping is not everything, a lesson our dear TVD writers should learn
ReplyDeleteIdk, there's not much of a choice with the shows except picking which low rated show for spackle/schedule filler.
ReplyDeleteIn the chart, "Jimmy Fallon live" should be "Jimmy Kimmel live."
ReplyDeleteSpring is especially hard on CW this year and Reign bounces back to a extent this and before when it got its first 0.5.CW couldn't ve predicted how bad the shows would do in spring. When it was renewed,Reign was doing well in fall/winter ,stable at 0.6-0.7, the fifth highest rated show and doing better than CD,BatB,HoD,TTP ect it made sense to renew thier top five shows and they would've anyway and they were always gonna renew a few bubble shows too anyway..Reign still pretty stable and I'm sure Czw expected a little lower ratings with spring and twice airing out of repeats.Reignis still doing better than SC,TTP,HoD ( that are still airing)& CD,BatB,Nikita overall this season.CW clearly supports the show-based on Pedowitz comments at TCA& the fact it didn't move at Midseason.Even it's leadin is way down now,so it's kinda expected Reign to be down too even though it's not leadin depedant.
ReplyDeleteThanks @tv_viewer Should be fixed now :)
ReplyDeleteI stopped watching the show last year (I was sick of the love triangle crap) what has the show done this year to cater to the shippers?
ReplyDeleteI just meant waiting and seeing, there was no need to pick Reign up early, hell they could have gone with a extra pilot.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it was too early of a pick up.
ReplyDeleteit's entirely pushing the Damon/Elena pairing, properly assassinating both characters. Damon kills people when she breaks his heart and she shrugs his deeds off as nothing. Both attributes both characters should've grown out of.
ReplyDeleteIt does if it makes people turn off their tvs like I did.
ReplyDeleteCorrect me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Damon tried to kill her brother quite a few times? (I forget how many times Jeremy died and came back to life and who killed him which time).
ReplyDeleteI still don't know why they renewed Reign with that bunch of shows though. Arrow, SPN, TO and TVD were all capable of getting 1.0's and they hit 1's many times. Reign didn't. So I understand why they reneweed those four, but Reign was a suprise because it didn't get the ratings that the other four did.
ReplyDeletehe has, he has. This season Damon killed one of Elenas buddys and she didn't even twitch an eye
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I dropped it then I think. I might catch up some day, but from what I've read that's becoming increasingly less likely.
ReplyDeleteWTF happened to TBBT? Hitting low 4s is kinda unexpected. Decent for Bad Teacher. Black Box will not get a second season.
ReplyDeleteYou're telling me 8 million people watched Bad Teacher? I watched for about...five minutes. So awful.
ReplyDeleteOutch at Black Box, haven't watched the episode yet, I probably will tonight.
ReplyDeleteOverall it doesn't look like much of a change but CW PR said Reign was up 25% in adults 18-49 and 67% in women 18-34.
ReplyDeletePhew. Reign got the rating of 0.5 :)
ReplyDeleteI used to watch TVD faithfully but when we switched to Direct the sound got messy, with more back ground than voice so I gradually stopped watching. Was a sad time I hope yours gets better
ReplyDeleteWell last week final numbers were kind of scary for Reign. A18-34:0.3, w18-34:0.3, m18-34: 0.2, A18-49: 0.4, W18-49: 0.6, M18-49: 0.3; A25-54:0.5
ReplyDeleteWhat's up with Big Bang Theory having 4 million viewers then it usually does?
ReplyDeleteI cant believe so many people watched bad teacher.
ReplyDeletei couldnt even watch for more than 5 minutes
