Wednesday 4/23/14 Metered Market Ratings
ABC’s “Modern Family” Tops the Evening
Household
Rating/Share
Fox 5.8/ 9
CBS 5.1/ 8
ABC 4.0/ 7
NBC 2.9/ 5
CW 1.6/ 3
-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Wednesday 4/24/13:
ABC: +25, CBS: no change, CW: -16, NBC: -27, Fox: -33
———-
-Winners:
“Survivor” (CBS), “Modern Family” (ABC)
-Honorable Mention:
“The Middle” (ABC)
-Fading Fast:
“American Idol” (Fox)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Mixology” (ABC)
———-
-Ratings Breakdown:
Two-hours of “American Idol” led Fox to more Wednesday overnight victory, but a 5.8 rating/9 share in households for the tired singing competition was down by 33 percent from the 8.6/14 on the year-ago evening. “Idol” last night trailed both “Survivor” on CBS (#1: 5.9/10 from 8-9 p.m.) and “Modern Family” on ABC (#1: 6.7/10 at 9 p.m.). Although “Modern Family” was the top-rated show of the evening, traveling to another destination is always a “jump the shark” risk for any aging sitcom. Think “Everybody Loves Raymond” in Italy, “The Facts of Life” in Paris and Australia, “Growing Pains” in Paris, and countless others. And, yes, the entire family traveled to Australia on “Modern Family.”
As for “American Idol,” the diminished ratings do not mean Fox will be swinging the axe anytime soon.
Airing out of dominant “Survivor” on CBS (which will have a stronger advantage demographically over “American Idol” than the five percent in the overnights) were encore telecasts of “Criminal Minds” (#3: 4.5/ 7) and “CSI” (#1: 4.8/ 8) from 9-11 p.m. Chances are the Eye net’s Wednesday line-up will remain intact next season.
Over at ABC, rumors point to a potential second season renewal for recent Wednesday 9:30 p.m. sitcom entry “Mixology.” But an anemic (and fourth-place) 2.8/ 4 in the household overnights was 58 percent below aforementioned lead-in “Modern Family.” Let it go, ABC. Earlier in the evening on the alphabet net were comedies “The Middle” (#3: 5.0/ 8 at 8 p.m.), which remains an unsung hero in primetime, and “Suburgatory” (#3: 3.6/ 6 at 8:30 p.m.), which is likely to earn a fourth season renewal to rack up more episodes for off-network.
Sophomore “Nashville,” which is likely to snag a renewal due to the merits of the drama (and not the ratings), closed the night with a second-place 3.0/ 5 at 10 p.m.
Elsewhere, reliable “Arrow” on The CW (#5: 1.8/ 3 at 8 p.m.) led into recent entry “The 100 Hundred” (#5: 1.5/ 2), which built by one-tenth of a rating point (or seven percent) from one week earlier. Chances of a second season renewal are positive. And NBC traveled the repeat route with its line-up of two episodes of “Law & Order: SVU” (8 p.m.: #4: 2.9/ 5; 9 p.m.: #4: 3.1/ 5) and “Chicago PD” (#3: 2.7/ 5). To the fans of “Revolution” wondering when it will be returning, it will be back next week. But odds of a third season are only 50/50.

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.
If you’re interested in Ratings/Renewals/Cancellations then we have a number of resources here at SpoilerTV that we recommend you check out.
Really hoping The 100 rises in the demos! Last night's episode was fantastic!
ReplyDeleteYay for The 100 rising! Arrow seems down from last week in HH ratings, but let's wait for the actual demo numbers (as always). Also, next week it might go up after people have seen that shocking final minutes of this week's episode.
ReplyDeleteThe 100 Hundred?
ReplyDeleteHoping for a 0.5-0.6 for The 100 and 0.8 for Arrow :)
ReplyDeleteThere weren't pre-emptions, right?
The ten thousand?
ReplyDeleteMaybe they´ll send more people on Earth and by time there´ll be 100 hundred people :D
ReplyDeleteHH means nothing for the CW to be honest. Last week Arrows HH were "above average" yet it got that awful ratings. So although its HH is lower this week I'm hoping for an increase where it counts!
ReplyDeleteBasically HH ratings mean nothing to any network/show. But I'm hoping Arrow will rise in the demo!
ReplyDeleteHopefully both Arrow and The 100 rise :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know if there's any real way to compare the HH ratings to the 18-49 demo. I just wait for the 18-49A demo to get announced.
ReplyDeleteI don't think so, I'd like to be wrong though.
ReplyDeleteLooking good for The 100! It would be awesome if it did a 0.7, but I'll be ok if it is a 0.5-0.6 :)
ReplyDeleteThat would be awesome indeed, but I'm afraid it will be 0.5-0.6.
ReplyDeleteWithout pre-emptions maybe there won't be any downward adjustment. It was awful to see The 100 adjusting down (last week).
ReplyDeleteprobably 0.6, which is great, tying with The Originals
ReplyDeletePlease ABC ... DO NOT renew Mixology ...
ReplyDeleteIf overnights translate well, it only got a 1.4 while MF got a 3.3. ABC can't renew it with a big drop-off of its lead-in. The Cancel Bear even said this about Mixology to a user on Twitter, "typical end of season producer whispering to Deadline made into a story". The Cancel Bear implied that the deadline announcing a second season renewal as a possibility for Mixology was nonsense. Here's the link if it makes you feel any better: https://twitter.com/TheCancelBear/status/457367719764307968
ReplyDeleteThat's tweet is so relieving ... thanks ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to help a friend out! (;
ReplyDeleteThere weren't pre-emptions so I hope both shows rise.
ReplyDeleteI trust in deadline more than TVBTN. However, that doesn't guarantee that Mixology will be renewed.
ReplyDeleteNever thought i would say this,I liked The 100 episode better than this week's TOepisode.Hope
ReplyDeleteit matches TO's tonight.0.6 is more likely,it seems!!
Last night's episode of the 100 was crazy good. I hope for a 0.6 that'd give it good chances of a renewal. Even if it adjusts down to 0.5 that'd be good. Just no 0.4s please!
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to say with CW about adjustments. For example in Denver & St. Louis, the CW line-up is pushed back an hour - they both air news at 7MT/7CT, respectively. I'm assuming fast nationals don't take that into account. I'm also assuming there are other markets that follow this schedule.
ReplyDeleteTVBTN: We'll say whatever gets us the most page views.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't he realize that Modern Family has traveled on a vacation in every season if I'm not mistaken? They've become traditional every season it seems like and not an attempt at jumping the shark.

Exactly ! Every season is a trip
ReplyDeleteGood(ish) for The 100, glad it's not dropping any lower and that's one hell of a retention from Arrow. Wonder what it would have done behind Arrow in the fall or a more solid performer like Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see The 100 adjusting up a tenth from last week! I haven't seen the episode yet because I'm still recovering from last night's traumatizing Arrow episode but I'll see it later today.
ReplyDeleteDamn, I still have to watch Arrow.
ReplyDeleteHope you've avoided today's huge spoilers regarding arrow!!
ReplyDeleteI know someone dies and there was an Interview post of one of the actors on the site, so I am guessing it's her. No confirmations needed.
ReplyDeleteGreat for the 100,great retention.Sad that arrow is not improving with regard to it's demo.Hope today's shocking ending will benefit the next episode!!
ReplyDeleteWell this all but confirms The 100 will get a season 2 (even if it dips to a .5 in the finals that'd still be enough). The only question I guess is left is how big HOD's episode order will be and if CBS Studios manages that one surprise renewal that is rumored (I'm rooting for Star Crossed because if BATB returns the internet will implode).
ReplyDeleteThe 100 won't get adjusted down. There were no pre-emptions and the half hours were 0.6/0.6. I hope it adjusts up.
ReplyDeleteI hope they pick up a new CBS productions instead of renewing BatB.
Quality wise,SC has improved a lot from it's earlier episodes and I love TTP-so my wish for the surprise renewal would be among two of them.BATB needs to end, period!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, obviously from my avatar I'd love for TTP to be renewed but I've accepted the obvious. What's bothering me about that it supposedly it ends on a cliffhanger. :\ I never thought SC was a bad show to begin with, it had poor advertising, that was the big disadvantage.
ReplyDeleteThat' a bummer.A show sure to get canned ending with a crazy cliffhanger!!
ReplyDeleteI don't get the hate around mixology. I love it and I think Liv is a definite stand out.
ReplyDeleteI would much rather see Star Crossed or TTP get another season but The 100 has a strong lead in with Arrow. Also, I agree that SC was advertised very poorly. It is was more than a love triangle. I just hope HoD gets a good order so at least I'll have that!
ReplyDeleteI love Liv! She's such a fun character.
ReplyDeleteI like the show too. And I love Liv.
