Wednesday 4/23/14 Metered Market Ratings
ABC’s “Modern Family” Tops the Evening
Household
Rating/Share
Fox 5.8/ 9
CBS 5.1/ 8
ABC 4.0/ 7
NBC 2.9/ 5
CW 1.6/ 3

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Wednesday 4/24/13:
ABC: +25, CBS: no change, CW: -16, NBC: -27, Fox: -33
———-

-Winners:
“Survivor” (CBS), “Modern Family” (ABC)

-Honorable Mention:
“The Middle” (ABC)

-Fading Fast:
“American Idol” (Fox)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Mixology” (ABC)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
Two-hours of “American Idol” led Fox to more Wednesday overnight victory, but a 5.8 rating/9 share in households for the tired singing competition was down by 33 percent from the 8.6/14 on the year-ago evening. “Idol” last night trailed both “Survivor” on CBS (#1: 5.9/10 from 8-9 p.m.) and “Modern Family” on ABC (#1: 6.7/10 at 9 p.m.). Although “Modern Family” was the top-rated show of the evening, traveling to another destination is always a “jump the shark” risk for any aging sitcom. Think “Everybody Loves Raymond” in Italy, “The Facts of Life” in Paris and Australia, “Growing Pains” in Paris, and countless others. And, yes, the entire family traveled to Australia on “Modern Family.”

As for “American Idol,” the diminished ratings do not mean Fox will be swinging the axe anytime soon.

Airing out of dominant “Survivor” on CBS (which will have a stronger advantage demographically over “American Idol” than the five percent in the overnights) were encore telecasts of “Criminal Minds” (#3: 4.5/ 7) and “CSI” (#1: 4.8/ 8) from 9-11 p.m. Chances are the Eye net’s Wednesday line-up will remain intact next season.

Over at ABC, rumors point to a potential second season renewal for recent Wednesday 9:30 p.m. sitcom entry “Mixology.” But an anemic (and fourth-place) 2.8/ 4 in the household overnights was 58 percent below aforementioned lead-in “Modern Family.” Let it go, ABC. Earlier in the evening on the alphabet net were comedies “The Middle” (#3: 5.0/ 8 at 8 p.m.), which remains an unsung hero in primetime, and “Suburgatory” (#3: 3.6/ 6 at 8:30 p.m.), which is likely to earn a fourth season renewal to rack up more episodes for off-network.

Sophomore “Nashville,” which is likely to snag a renewal due to the merits of the drama (and not the ratings), closed the night with a second-place 3.0/ 5 at 10 p.m.

Elsewhere, reliable “Arrow” on The CW (#5: 1.8/ 3 at 8 p.m.) led into recent entry “The 100 Hundred” (#5: 1.5/ 2), which built by one-tenth of a rating point (or seven percent) from one week earlier. Chances of a second season renewal are positive. And NBC traveled the repeat route with its line-up of two episodes of “Law & Order: SVU” (8 p.m.: #4: 2.9/ 5; 9 p.m.: #4: 3.1/ 5) and “Chicago PD” (#3: 2.7/ 5). To the fans of “Revolution” wondering when it will be returning, it will be back next week. But odds of a third season are only 50/50.
