I guess they had to....but I suspect the world would have been off better if it had died....I don't think that it's just the leg which makes it a Monster.
Well, if you read a little about viking history, Ragnar did have a son named Ivar the Boneless and he was considered to be a very wise man and advised his brothers. So it kinda makes sense they didn't kill him. The only part they altered is that Ivar was not the youngest son.
Depends on the perspective...I'm sure the Saxon's view on Ivar was less positive, considering the havoc he wrecked in his lands and his alleged quick temper.
