Reese's expression when Finch asked him to "kill them all" if Decima harmed Grace was amazingly poignant. This is the type of show where mere facial movements can project worlds of emotion, thought, and dialogue without uttering a single syllable. It was odd not seeing Finch for most of the episode but Michael Emerson stole every scene he was in.
Glad to see "Cocoa Puffs" was her crazily awesome self as usual. :)
Another epic episode. It turned out to be quite an emotional one, but not surprising since it heavily featured Grace.
Stand out scenes:
Root, Reese and Shaw playing a dangerous game of hide and seek with Samaritan.
Reese telling Root that the Machine better give him names and the Machine gives Grace's name to Root.
All the scenes at the precinct were awesome. Specially, the scene where Fusco leads that Decima agent into the interrogation room where Batman err Reese is already waiting.
Greer and Grace scene. Everything was awesome about that scene specially Grace's putdown of Greer. I loved how she called him "Old Man". He will henceforth be called just that.
Finch made an appearance quite late but it was so heartbreaking to see him sitting all forlorn on those steps.
Scary thought: Samaritan was quite awesome at locating people and that too without it's cognitive functions. Imagine the threat it may/will provide if/when it's fully up and running.
What is Root going to do with the seven servers that she stole from that ship? Why is Greer keeping Finch alive.
Was a good episode, not a great one. The moments between Reese, Fusco, Shaw and Root was great, I think this four works so well together.
I think Beta was interesting because we see more of the point of view of the Samaritan, but in the all picture I think they slow down a little bit, maybe because the two final episodes will be full of action and the writers don't want to give to much, but I miss more action, more tension and Beta give just fifth percent of this.
The final scene was incredible, Greer faces Finch give me goosebumps. I'm glad Grace is ok.
amazing ep that served to set the stage for the mayhem that the finale eps are certain to deliver.... great performances tonight by Carrie Preston and Michael E.... loved the Finch line, "Try to avoid violence if you can Mr Reese, but if they harm her in any way,....... kill them all"... sooo good and looking forward to seeing what Root/Machine have planned with the servers they stole.... missed seeing Bear tonight...
im wondering if vigal will wanna align with the machine in the finale because it said unlikely alliances occur in the finale. But yes, this indeed a very nice episode, Im glad that Grace didn't find out Harold was alive, maybe later in the series will be ok, but now Im ok that she doesn't. BTW I loved the first scene with Shaw!
Beta was sort of a 'set up' episode. Even so, the episode had plenty of action but for me it's emotionally heavy content was the highlight. Love me some mature angst and heartbreak.
Another series defining episode that will go on my list of best ever television episodes. Loved it from start to finish. Everyone upped their game. Greer now has 2 episodes to play games with Finch and vice versa. I'm betting the season finale will involve Samaritan going fully 100% online in the final scenes as the cliffhanger. Bring on the next 2 weeks!
I think the same, just set up, but hey I expect something like Endgame, but It's ok, POI always surprise me anyway. I wanna see this episode again later.
I was sure watching the promo, that there is an edit in it and John's content smile was not the real reactions to Finch's demand ("kill them all"). I'm very happy that they stayed true to the characters - it would have been disappointing to me if Reese find it a funny moment when his best friend crosses the line (even theoretically) what he always wanted to avoid.
Great episode, a lot of great nonverbal acting moments (for which I'm sure the actors are very grateful). Somebody can say that Grace's bump on the bridge was too theatrical writing, but I liked that in this way Harold has got a last thank you from her without making the situation cheesy.
I loved Grace and I'm happy that she returned in this episode. I, however, detest Greer to the core and hope that the team will find a way to put a bullet in his head. I loved the cooperation between Reese, Shaw, and Root, and also Fusco in the station. I was especially surprised and delighted when Fusco cleverly led the fake detective to the interrogation room just to be beaten up by Reese. It sounds like Grace is going to leave the show forever (I'm not sure) but part of me really hopes that Finch and Grace get together. They both love each other so much and they both deserve a shot at love. But if Grave has to leave, then maybe it's for the best.
Anyways, what a great episode, epic one. I can't understand how the writers can write a great episode and top it with the next one and the next one. Really talented.
Agree so much on both parts! When I saw Reese do his smirk in the earlier scene, I cheered. The ''Kill them all'' scene was so powerful, even though they had shown it in the promos already. As for the bridge scene... I just loved that. I was sure they were just going to have them walk past each other, and that would have killed me. ;) The metaphor of Finch secretly protecting her from everything is great.
I thought they were going to reference the debate from the previous episode, but I don't think they did. Harold didn't say he regretted his decision to let McCourt live, so he stayed true to his character in that way. He actually sacrificed himself for Grace instead.
A thought regarding the coming season finale: In this episode, they made a point of mentioning that Samaritan's higher cognitive centers have as yet never been activated. I'm guessing that that's what will happen in the finale and when it does, Samaritan will turn around and align itself with the Machine...just in time to save the day. Hence the title, "Deus ex Machina." Maybe those seven servers Root stole will have something to do with that, as well. The Machine could be planning to "reeducate" those and then "infect" Samaritan with something like a "morality virus."
A few questions came into my mind before the final turns:
- The most important: where is Bear, who cares for him? :) - I wonder whether we shall get a hint about Greer's boss? He reported to someone during the end of S2 (when the hardware tech guy committed suicide), so I wonder who can it be? - If suicide: why are Decima's men are so willing to rather die then being captured? - What other cards Finch has in his sleeve? Making the camera being switched off in front of Grace's house was probably part of the "admin hiding protocol", but I wonder what else (if any) he has? - Control and Vigilance. In the beginning of the season I suspected Vigilance being the mislead pawn of Decima, but now I don't think so they should be against them too. (There were some cliffhanger hints in the press release too.) Control is a more interesting part - I wonder where does the Madame standing now? Wanting to revenge her political boss, so trying to throw him under the bus? Wanting to protect the country, no matter the means, so accepting that from now her post is transferred to Decima? Wanting to protect the country AND keep the reigns in her hand, so fighting against Decima, even if it means she has to support the Team Machine?
Finch and Grace were amazing, as always, but wow, there were more plot holes in this episode than in "God Mode" - and that's saying something. For starters, there's no way to tie "Harold Finch" to Grace. The Finch we know and love would never have used that name before he sold the Ordos laptop, after she thought he was dead. So there's no connection. None. Nada. So, like:
Greer: Siri, find me Raven Street
Siri: I’m sorry, there’s no Raven Street in this city.
Greer: Then find me the street closest to Raven Street.
Siri: There is no Raven Street.
Greer: Yes, I know, so find me a street close to it.
Siri: Processing. Mr. Greer, I’ve been authorized to lock out your engine and revoke your driver’s license. Here’s you bus pass.
Greer: Samaritan, find me Harold Finch.
Samaritan: I’m sorry, there is no Harold Finch in the city.
Greer: Then find me the person closest to him.
Sam: There is no Harold Finch.
Greer: Yes, I know, so find me the person closest to him.
It's been established before that Finch keeps an eye on Grace, helps her career, gets her work and stuff. Maybe Samaritan caught a connection between the many businesses he owns under this particular alias and Grace. Maybe that's how they knew there was a connection, but they didn't know what it was.
Good guess, but -- when Greer was looking for Finch pre-Samaritan, he told Stanton that ALL they had was a name. So Harold has not used "Harold Finch" in any of his holding companies or businesses or anything else. Which makes sense, given his deep paranoia. So Harold Wren might have been helping her, or one of the other identities, but not Finch. Samaritan couldn't find ANYTHING on him either. (We will all conveniently ignore the photo of Nathan Ingram that instantly popped up on the screen at the end of "Death Benefit", too, because ... um ... well, just because.) So -- "he doesn't exist, but let's find something close to him" just doesn't work.
Then maybe they identified another alias. He has used many of them while working to save irrelevant numbers. A few of them were used several times and could have raised a flag, like Harold Wren and Harold Crane.
In fact I don't ignore Nathan's photo, just the opposite, through him could they get to Finch. Greer had more information about Finch relation to the Machine project than even Control had, simply because he had different sources and most importantly, because he knew that there is a person who he had to look for. (The you has to know the questions first to get answers premise.) Using the "Harold Finch" name in the show might be considered as a blooper plotwise, but here I'm willing to give the writers the leeway - "Find - me - Harold - Finch!" was much more dramatic than "Find - me - Harold - Finch, or Crane, or Wren, or Martin, etc."
From other aspect, you can approach the thing that WE are calling him Finch as well, just because that was the name he was introduced first and we don't know his real name either, and it's almost sure not his real name. So Greer could easily used this name referring to him because of the same reason - that was the name they knew first.
I wonder if the NYPD or FBI have any clue about Decima going after people who is trying to stop Samaritan from coming online....I mean there is a lot of dead bodies around!
There was the "Harold Finch" slip of paper early on, maybe Season 1? It was when Mark Snow got blown up in the car, I think. That may have gotten to Greer.
Could it be that "They" noticed the Harold last name theme: Wren Crane Finch....
Harold has a tendency to use Bird Names.... Or am I reading too much into it?
*I too am beginning to think that Vigilance will be a "Enemy of my Enemy" team member. From a V point of view- and Team Finch as well- Our Machine, is the lesser of two evils.
*Harold's love for Grace is so touching.
*Shaw's "Lesson on Life" at the start of the ep was priceless!
*Anything else I can help you with Choa-Choa Puffs? Tooooo Funny!
*Where is BEAR!!!!????
*The looks on Reese & Shaw's faces when Harold was being put into the Decima car.
Am looking forward to (and equally NOT looking forward to) the next two eps!!
Well, it has been established that both machines have access to the archives of all the cameras around the city and the sound recordings of all the conversations. Which would mean that the first time Harold used his “Finch” alias around any device that the machines have access to it was already out there for someone with access to find. Connecting the aliases should not be a problem, after that. Now factor in the facial recognition software that both machines have, and the fact that we know from Grace that they lived together at her house... and you are there.
Except that when Samaritan was asked to find him, it couldn't find any trace -- so no vocal or facial recordings anywhere, presumably because the Machine had already scrubbed everything from the record. Virgil said something like "not a hint" or "not a whiff". If there's nothing -- nothing, which is what they said Samaritan found -- then there's nothing to find close associates with. See my example above. If you GPS says a street doesn't exist, asking it to find a cross-street to the non-existent street will not help you get to your destination.
They already had the names of Shaw, Reese, and Root as Finch's associates (Shaw and Reese practically told Greer they know Finch when they first met, and he knew about Root before he approached her with his offer). I think the argument about using the old camera feeds to connect Finch to Grace still stands, as well. So the problem would be finding anything on Finch himself, correct me if I'm wrong. My best guess about the Virgil scene would be that he had nothing to find Finch's current location with, but I don't remember the scene well enough to argue that, to be honest. That being said, it would be strange if the Machine didn't anticipate the need to, as you said, scrub the records clean.
Btw. what's your take on Fusco finding enough info on Finch to connect him to various aliases back in season 1?
I assumed that John gave Fusco the photo he found in the library with N.I. initials on it because we see it later in Fusco’s folder. They knew about Will and IFT. But what I’m having a bit of trouble with is Fusco connecting Finch to Harold’s other aliases. He tells John that Harold “has so many aliases I [L.F.] don’t even know where to start,” which is presented in a way which implies that Lionel thinks he is presenting Reese with some new information (and is subsequently praised by John for being good at this “detective work”, again implying that at least part of what Fusco learnt was news to them both). So what? He ran Finch’s photo through facial recognition software? And got results from which database?... Just throwing it out there ;-)
either it would be with: 1. She (the govt) maybe, now they don't want Northern lights exposed, Finch wouldn't 2. Samaritan unlikely given how all they want is power 3. Vigilance (they hate technology, Finch was to preserve it)
I would like to acknowledge Shaw's growth over the last year. When she was first introduced to us, she lost someone very close to her and became a total lone wolf. She joined the team, but kept one foot out the door for a while. Now she genuinely cares about these guys. A few episodes back, she called them her "friends" ("I've killed lots of people, but my friends keep telling me it's wrong"), and now she was clearly upset with the fact that Harold was taken. I applaud the writers for the great work on character development there.
The storylines is awesome, without question. The detail on the show, thought, is just another level. I love how Samaritan was given a completely different, just as intuitive UI. Even when it lost connection, that one second scene, if you go frame by frame, you could see every module disconnecting... even a reference the Heartbleed exploit thrown in. Hands down, the best and most realistic technology based sci fi show I have ever come across.
Me again ;-) If you check the video called „Removing Obstacles” at the official POI YT channel, you can see the exact moment (near the end of the video) when Virgil first inputs Harold’s name after Decima gets access to the feeds. Samaritan immediately flags four aliases including Wren and Crane (I can’t say for sure because of the quality of the video, but I think it also flags the Martin alias – the large circle on the top), as well as finds the connection to Nathan. There are enough cameras around the IFT building that, with facial recognition software and archive feeds, it would be easy for someone with access to make that connection.
For the suicide part: It seems to me that if they worked with Decima, they must have noticed that it's either that or Decima will send someone after them with orders to kill. So far, everyone we've seen working for Decima ended up killed by them the moment they did their job.
I've liked every episode that features Grace. She adds such a nice level of depth and meaning to Harold's life, past and present. Every scene that featured Grace, was powerful and poignant. I liked Fusco's role, albeit small, in this episode too. I really like how easily Reese and Shaw work together now, so seemless, like they've been partners forever.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
KILL THEM ALL . How did you dare to touch Harold and Grace ?

For the suicide part: It seems to me that if they worked with Decima, they must have noticed that it's either that or Decima will send someone after them with orders to kill. So far, everyone we've seen working for Decima ended up killed by them the moment they did their job.
ReplyDeleteI've liked every episode that features Grace. She adds such a nice level of depth and meaning to Harold's life, past and present. Every scene that featured Grace, was powerful and poignant. I liked Fusco's role, albeit small, in this episode too. I really like how easily Reese and Shaw work together now, so seemless, like they've been partners forever.
