It was a good episode, and I am sure I would've enjoyed more, if I hadn't read the books. But as a book reader I gotta say that these changes are really starting to get on my nerves.
I love on this show and in the books that when you are devastated when a good character dies they make some absolutely despicable characters that you can't wait to see die. Those Night Watch guys that stayed behind in the camp, no one is going to be sad when they are slaughtered.
It was nice to finally have a few very good scenes at the Wall! Seeing the bulk of the men have Jon's back while Janos Slynt and Alisser Thorne plot was interesting. Not as fun as seeing Jon Snow shake Locke's hand. This could get very interesting indeed! I also loved the "Oh Captian my Captain" moment with Jon recruiting volunteers to go to Craster's Keep! XD
As expected, the scene last week had more impact on some viewers than on Cersei herself. Another one of those scenes fans obsess on for one reason or another while in the world of the sow it has little or no effect.
- Nice they finally showed Dany's darker side, but I'm sure some fans will still manage to take it as pure justice not cruelty! XD - As anticipated, the Bronn and Jaime training scenes are turning out to be so much fun! - Maybe the people that need complete closure will be happy now that Littlefinger and Olenna basically admitted their roles in killing Joffrey. - Cersei remains her usual charming and congenial self I see. - Fun scene between Jaime and Tyrion! - Loved the Brienne and Jaime scene.. He was certainly full of gifts! Brienne finally has her blue armor and it looks stunning! - Burn Gorman certainly plays a good miscreant! He was just vile!! - Ghost! Is it wrong to be happy to see Ghost if he is locked in a pen and mistreated? Oh yeah, and Summer. XD - Not sure how I feel about Bran and company being taken by the mutineers. It does give Bran some much needed screen time I guess.
Nice to finally have confirmation (maybe?) in how the White Walkers/ Others are made! I always assumed it had to do with the male babies Craster sacrificed, but to see it on film was a bit creepy!
Maybe a step backwards from last week's episode for me, but still very good!
What is it about loose open necked shirts? Tyrion was h~ooo~t!! ;) seriously PD is so handsome I think I have a crush! And the guys are such bros love Bronn caring about Tyrion, punching Jaime (he deserved it) and telling him to fight for his brother.
Aww even separated husband and wife believe in the others innocence. Love it and GoT. :) happy gal
For the most part, I have accepted the series is different than the books, two separate entities.... However, that gets so hard at times knowing the brilliant books scenes left on the floor and replaced.
Most of the time I understand the need for the changes, but I still get a bit annoyed when scenes seem to be changed for no apparent reason. If the books scene fits the necessary arc of the series why not use it?
The ending scene creeped me out. Poor babies. I really want to see at least two of the Stark children meet - so I am hoping that Bran will be at Caster's Keep when Jon shows up. But with this series, you never know. I missed Arya this week.
I am not a book reader (yet - hope that changes this summer), but I really don't like when they make some of the sex scenes more rape-y (Danny/Drogo, Cersei/Jaime).
Yes, I understand it is a viscous world and rape is rampant and needs to be shown sometimes, but those two scenes you mention were not rape in the books. They actually changed them to rape for some reason... with no pay off as of yet.
I think there is enough rape already for people to understand the vulgarity of Westeros. Why add more?
I see a reckoning coming. Book readers gonna start having some real issues with the stuff they're pulling here. Or at least I am. I fully understand changes are necessary, but they are downright slaughtering the story.
You right, It's inevitable that the book series with the tv series will differentiate from each other to some degree at least all things considered, and I too have accepted that. But every time a scene comes up that is little or entirely different from the one I've read in the books, I can't help it but compare one with the other, and the books always come out on top every time.
My main issue however is with some scenes added that weren't in the books. You must've noticed how big the changes were at the wall, and North of the wall. Those especially I find annoying, because I don't recognize them at all, and changes such a brilliant story to its core.
Up until this episode, I personally thought they kept pretty true to the books. This episode completely rocked any understanding from the books that we've had. Total game changer.
I knew what was coming for the Sansa and her arc with Littlefinger. But I still can't stomach how creepy he is with her. I just cringe through all the his lines.
I noticed the changes, but I expected changes to those two arcs (along with Dany) in particular going into the season.
The insight into Craster's Keep with the mutineers works for me. Sure it was not really shown in the books other than Bran and company finding their remains in the HF, but I think it gives us some nice insight into the Others/ White Walkers.
I never expected to see Coldhands, so they needed someone else to kill the mutineers (and to interact with Bran). There was just no way they were going to have Bran and company traveling through the Haunted Forest for episode after episode to fill the entire year.. I'm not sure I like that new scene that much, but I see the reasoning and the benefit...
I think sending Jon north to kill the mutineers works very well. It allows them to show Thorne and Slynt plotting against Jon, Jon to show some leadership again and win back some of his Black Brothers that may doubt him.
Don't get me wrong, I think Jon Snow's book arc is much better than his arc on the series.. Likewise with Bran and Dany. Could they have done the Jon and Dany scenes differently, maybe more like the books? Sure and I would have liked it more.
That said,I think Jon's new scenes worked. They accomplished what the writers wanted as far as I can tell.
That's good news considering how many theories exist about him and its counterpart. The Night's King already exists so it can't be someone we already know. The tv-show is a bit far ahead on this one, and the clues about the others.
I think Sansa's book arcs were even creepier though! More of Joffrey's mind games, the way she interacted with The Hound, and I found Dontos's drunk antics abit odd too honestly! XD
I'm sure the worst of Littlefinger and Sansa is yet to come though.... Sigh.
I still think CH will make an appearance. I mean, they can't really have Jon and Bran meet can they? Jon would never in a million years allow a crippled Bran to wander off North of the wall. An interview with the person who plays Bran where he says that maybe they delayed CH from last season so that he could make a more impactful entrance leads me to believe he will make an appearance soon.
I loved Coldhands when I read the books, Well, the first 4 books.
ADWD basically made me lose interest in CH completely since I took him as little more than a controlled minion of Bloodraven. I don't see the point of introducing CH for only an episode or two when we know HBO cast the 3-Eyed Crow/ Bloodraven and he will be introduced soon enough.
SPOILERS for those who have not read the books. True enough. But still, CH was such a mysterious character and such a huge part of fans' discussion for such a long time that I think it would be cool if he's included. Also, it would be a nice way to show us CH's identity. Joseph Mawle was spotted in Iceland with the cast. So, fingers crossed.
Sadly so many of those nice homages to fans have been left out. How easy would it have been to insert the "Is your sword sharp, Jon Snow?" or any of the other much loved lines by fans like "Is there any gold hidden in the village? Silver? Gems? Where is Lord Beric?"
Seems like the majority of the time D&D either are unaware of fan favorite bits or they don't have time to include them.... or maybe they do not think they are important enough to include those parts.....
If they leave out CH it is okay, but they better not leave out LS which I am sure they won't. They have already planted all the necessary seeds nicely. Can't wait for that.
Ha! XD Some people would flip out if LS was cut from the series!
She play such an important thematic role for a lto of people and maybe even an important role to the story, but we will not know until the next book or two I guess.
I tried to think of a way to not include her since from a production point of view I could see reasons for it, but I think Brienne going on her quest has sealed it for me. LS will arrive end of this year or beginning of next year depending on how they want to use "that" scene..
You can't say everyone will agree, I myself don't. I love being surprised when I expect something to happen from the books and it doesn't. It's why I watch the show, I want to see Game of Thrones the HBO show, not ASOIAF on tv. They're different but the same, I'm loving every minute of both.
Those White Walker revelations at the end BLEW MY MIND!! Love it.
Exactly. I dislike some changes and like others, but I expect a lot of changes, in particular with Brienne, Bran and Dany this year.
Even when I dislike changes it never makes me dislike an entire episode or the series as a whole. I know the changes will not cause me to stop watching...
I may stop in a season or two though honestly. I'm unsure right now... I look at the books as my preferred medium and I have more interest in reading the endgame of the series than watching D&D's (and the other writers) interpretation of GRRM's outlines.
I think that is why I am now almost happier as the series moves away from the books! It makes me think that there will be so many changes that the TV series endgame could be different than the books.
Who knows though... While right now I think I would rather read the series, I enjoyed tonight's spoilerific introduction to the Night's King and meeting the 3-Eyed Crow later this year may confirm other theories many have as well. The more spoilerific revelations come that I enjoy instead of being annoyed I could keep watching the series no matter what....
I like 95% of the changes and I actually like that the show is forging its own path - really they have no choice for several reasons;
1) there are simply too many characters for everyone to ever show up, GOT has the biggest cast on TV as it is,
2) there is so much plot some of which is kind of boring and needs to be streamlined
3) lots of main characters just don't get to do a lot - their journeys are slow so adding new bits and making characters interact is a good way of keeping their stories exciting
4) GRRM writes too damn slow. The show is going to catch up so it might as well go crazy at times.
So yeah it doesn't bother me and really by now book readers should realise there are going to be changes this was never meant to be a 100% faithful adaptation most book to TV/Movies aren't and its impossible to keep everyone happy. I find it exciting not always knowing where things might end up.
Did anyone watch with closed captions or actually decipher the name of the boy in the Night's Watch who claimed ot be his village's best archer? The boy whose father was killed by the WIldlings in the previous episode....
He looks a good deal like Brenock O'Connor who was cast as "Guymon" before the season... I never caught his name, but it did not sound like Guymon to me......
I bet he is taking the place of Satin from the books.
Trying to recall my legend and details about the Night's King, the Others and the Great Other.....
Wasn't there "White Walkers" before the Night's King? They built the Wall before the NK so why build the Wall if not for Others/ WWs? Plus, It's theorized his wife was one, right? Who created her or was she the Great Other?
It's the chronology that bothers me I guess, not the other facts surrounding Craster's sons being the foundation of the WWs.... That much I always assumed.
Wasn't the Cersei/Jamie sex scene at their childs body written to be rapey in the books as well? I get that Khaleesi's and Drogo's first time was rewritten to be like rape in the show when it wasn't in the books but I think it kinda made sense since she was forced to marry him, I mean realistically, that's what it would be, esp since on the show the dothraki spoke another language so it was much more difficult to smooth her into the idea. It did get better between them as they grew to care for eachother and she learned some moves from the pleasure house girl to help tame Drogo. Which is sexist but somehow I never minded because it seemed well done. A lesser show would not have been able to pull that off.
The problem, IMO, is ASOIAF is not a finished series. And we know GRRM shared information with D&D that readers do not yet possess. So I think some readers will be mad not simply because they're changing the story, but also because they could be introducing spoilers.
I read the books aswell, but I don´t mind the chances. If they choose not kill Joffrey off, I would have hated it, but the changes they made are still keeping the story on the right path. Loved every Jaime scene, but especially the Jaime/Brienne scene. Brilliant! Great seeing Ghost again, now we know what happend to him. Jon seems more true to "Book Jon" in season 4 and I am liking it. Creepy seeing the Night´s King in the end, that was a surprice. So enjoyed the soundeffects in that scene.
I really liked it for the most part! I cringe a little (or a lot) everytime when they drastically change from the books especially when it brings nothing to the show's plot.
I loved the Littlefinger scenes with Sansa. I glad they didn't linger on the mystery of who killed Joffrey. And you gotta love Olenna she's truly awesome and her advices are gold. Margaery completely hooked that poor Tommen.
That ending was so creepy. Poor baby, I was so sure they would kill him but now I don't know what is worse! And finally on a lighter note one my favourite pairing as begun (Yay for Brienne and Pod)!
Such a great episode ! Much better than last week ! I can't understand why there are so much haters, this was the best episode of the season (behind 4x02 and Joffrey's death of course).
I totally agree, I believe books and their screen adaptations should be taken as complements to one another, I think the screen gives us things the books can't and books give us things TV can't. I love to have the chance to have and appreciate both.
Regarding Danny I'm not sure I see it as justice but I do think she can't afford to have people who hate her hanging arround, it would be risking too much. And I don't know about other Danny fans but one of the things I love most about GOT characters is that they have layers and none is perfect, that's what I love about her too.
Yeah, that was my biggest fear. Not including LS would make sense from their budget pov. Hopefully you are right and they end the season with LS. That would keep people talking.
I love that character and yes I feel it was justice according to that world not cruel. What those people did? The Masters nailed CHILDREN. Justice was served. And it will be lesson to all her people-you don't hurt the innocent. I think she will be a good ruler. She has pet peeves such as NO RAPING, NO KILLING CHILDREN, and Human Slavey are BIG NO-No's for her. I like her.
I am glad we finally found out what was done to the babies. I was worried they were eaten or sacrificed. Very creepy. I am glad the baby didn't freeze to death. Weird that it didn't.
At the end of the episode we see the last of Craster's male babies being left for the White Walkers by the mutineers.
A WW picks it up and transports it across the frozen lands for a long time until it gets to a circle of ice pillars (think Stone Hendge) and then the 5%$&^% Night's King comes out and grabs the baby.
We see a close up of the baby's face as the Night's King moves his finger towards the baby's cheek, touches it, and the baby's yes go ice blue! IT turned it into a White Walker!
That may be an issue for me as we approach the end of the TV series!
I do not want the end of ASOIAF series to be spoilered by the TV series and am considering not watching the last season or tw of the series if they pass the series and plan to stick to GRRM's endgame.
I like layers too, even more so in the books where they are more defined...
The thing that bothers me with Dany is she is far less nuanced than in the books and some viewers miss many of her questionable acts or chose to ignore them.
So many of her acts are grey (if not dark grey or even black) in in the world of Westeros and Essos, but viewers look at them by today's standards and see Dany as always doing the right thing and that is simply not the case.
There have been looks given by Jorah and by Barristan Selmy where they are leery of what Dany is doing. They are worried she is becoming yet another crazy Targaryen and not the just Queen they want her to be.
I admittedly dislike her character in the books, but the way she is written on the show and perceived by some viewers makes me dislike her TV version even more honestly.
If you didn't like the source material of Danny it's probable you won't like her in the show either, but that's a matter of taste, I don't think the showrunners nor the fans are doing something wrong. I believe in Westeros there's no black and white, and in the world in general it's pretty hard to tell sometimes. So looking for a specific definition would be pointless, specially in fiction.
Even though Daenerys was one of my two or three least favorite POVs in the books, I did enjoy her arcs at times. Especially the prophecies. By removing the large majority of the prophecies they gutted the character to me.
Plus, maybe more than any other character, Dany suffers from the lack of time on screen. Very little interaction between Dany and her companions to show her internal struggles and thoughts. Those conversations and events are what truly lead to Dany's maturation and evolution as a character. Not conquering the Free Cities so much.
By cutting many of the quieter and introspective moments they have basically turned Dany's entire arc into a highlight reel. There is very little depth to her TV character and Emilia's performance does not add to it. We see her leave a destination, then arrive, then after a few lines of self-righteous dialog she conquers a city in a scene or two. Unlike in the books, there is no struggle to let her character evolve organically.
Weird is one of putting it. Considering the other carrying the babe traveled to the Land of always Winter, which should have taken a good amount of time to reach since it's located at the northernmost part of Westeros, and according to the Ice&fire wiki is permanently locked in winter. Also I assume is even colder based on the association the others have with extreme cold.
One of those fantasy elements that just doesn't adhere to our real world science... Maybe there is some reason though like the WW magic protects the bay... Maybe WW don't just make everything ice cold, but can control the temperature? So they can keep the babies comfy in the Lands of Always Winter?
I am sure about the others being creatures that possess magical powerS. We do know for certain that they use some kind of power/magic to reanimate dead humans, but I don't know if they can control temperature. If anything I would presume it must be even colder being in close proximity of them, since it seems like they're bringing extreme cold when they emerge . Judging based on merely those factors it doesn't seem plausible for a newborn baby to survive such conditions. Even if it was fully and heavy clothed, which it wasn't. But us you rightly added we're talking about fantasy, and I suppose everything is possible, even if doesn't make much sense, especially since we had no idea so far what they were doing with those babies.
It's all rather confusing, isn't it? I've read the books quite a long ago and with all those theories I've read it's all kinda mixed up together. IIRC the Night's King came after the long night and the wall, where he fell in love with a woman who's believe to be a female other. The Great other I believe is a God, or some entity. According to Mel, he is the enemy. She also thinks Brynden rivers and Bran are on his side just like Stannis is R'hilor's champion (he truly isn't though. Who's the good guy and who's the bad I have no idea. Brynden and the COTG seem genuinely trying to help Bran.
I'm just happy and perhaps wrong as well, that we got to see the Knight's King. Because I've read many theories about a favorite character of mine becoming him later one, and that seems to eliminate my fears. At least it doesn't like he has to be reborn just like Azor Ahai/TPTWP.
I'm still a little leery on ruling things out in the books based on info we get from the series, but if it holds true......We are in complete agreement on that popular fan theory not turning out how some theorized!
Some believe that some things we see in the show and haven't been mentioned in the books, is an indication of where the series is going in the end, since I remember reading somewhere that the author has talked about that stuff and how it's gonna end with the show's creators. So for now I am good, still hoping my favorite character lives and doesn't end up leading the army of the others and wights to extinguish all life. I still don't like the favoritism Daenerys gets, but what's you gonna do :P
I agree 100%, but I do wish changing the story did not mean screwing it up. Right now, I'm not so sure. Seriously, D&D will have to prove themselves to me after that Jaime/Cersei rape scene. It is inconsistent with everything the characters mean and I still can't swallow it.
DarqueMode Totally agree. Dany's been reduced to self-righteous one-liners that appeal to the mainstream viewers who take her acts as morally justifiable from the modern perspective. But what else would we expect from the mainstream audience.
That's what I partly hate about the show - they're constantly trying to appeal to the mainstream audience. The books have been increasingly appealing to the mainstream without sacrificing the integrity of the story or dumbing it down for the readers.
Also, I don't know why the fuck they chose to put the battle for Castle Black to the 9th episode. I know, badass battle is better towads the end of the season, but I don't see the point, honestly. This is the end of ASOS for gods' sake (pun intended), so many things are climactic - the "passing away" of certain characters in KL, the stuff that happens after the battle at Castle Black, the stuff in the Eyrie etc etc. It just keeps going on, lots of climactic things happening, if they let them play out in the time these plotlines have in the books, they would have enough material to fill the time they're now trying to fill with Bran, which feels very forced.
Yeah, as long as they don't go too nuts with the book departures I can deal with it. A certain amount of that is expected, but the Bran detour is the biggest one so far. This basically puts him right in the middle of everything when it comes to the wall. Not quite sure how I feel about it yet.
On the other hand, I don't want to say what else is left, but it looks like they're fleshing Bran out a bit. I wonder if he'll warg his way out of Craster's or if he'll actually run into Jon for a brief moment before resuming his journey.
Assuming Bran escapes before Jon arrives I don't see any harm in the changes. They give more Bran screen time and we got insight into that White Walker/ Night's King scene!
I wonder if they also could use Bran's escape as a reason for Locke's true motivation for being at the Wall to come out. Maybe he will be overheard interrogating mutineers or he will leave the NW party in an attempt to follow Bran.
If Jon figure it out he would kill Locke giving Thorne and Slynt another reason to consider him a traitor. Not necessary changes to the books , but it would provide more tension on The Wall.
It would put both Thorne and Slynt front and center for the upcoming Lord Commander election as well. Using Them as options for the LC election streamlines things a bit letting D&D cut out a number of new NW roles in the books making it easier for casual fans to follow and keeping production costs down.
0_0 Is that a change from the books? I've not read them (and probably won't until he releases the next one which if I remember is not for a year or so)
Honestly most of the episode was different than the books in some way, but that scene has never been in the books in any form.
In the books, The Night's King is a legend from The Time of Heroes. A Foundation story of Westeros that many dismiss as partly myth since no one has seen or heard of him in 8,000 years.
We do know Craster sacrifices his sons, but we do not see how he does it. In the books we only see from one point-of-view in any chapter. At the Wall that usually means Jon or Samwell. So unless one of those two actually witnesses something firsthand we do not read about it.
There may be discussions of events that happened elsewhere, rumors or stories from people the POV character talks to, but at best knowledge of the Others (what the book calls White Walkers) is very limited.
So witnessing this trip through the Lands of Always Winter to the ice city with the baby is completely new to the series and kind of a big deal.
You know, having read all 5 books, the threat of the white walkers doesn't seem quite as present as it does in the show. By that I mean, you read the sections in the books, but they're quickly forgotten when you spend 5 chapters in Essos or 12 chapters in K.L., for example. There are a couple of encounters: The prologue to GOT, The Night's Watch were attacked by them, and there's some more interesting/terrifying stuff to come, but there are loooong stretches where you don't really hear from them at all.
Credit D&D with keeping them in the front of our collective memories.
Yeah I was not happy with what happened last week at all and wish they had just cut that scene entirely. I still have faith in D&D but they need to get a handle on sexual violence in the show its getting too much.
I understand and I respect that. I can definitely see how that would be ultra annoying to be spoiled by the TV version of events, it definitely won't sit well with a lot of people and that's understandable. Unfortunately, as harsh as it sounds, the only way to avoid to being spoiled is to stop watching because this has always been inevitable with how slow George writes.
They're adapting Book 4 & 5 as we speak to be season 5 which starts filming this summer and we know the show plans to end in 7/8 seasons. George and his book company have said that WOW will not be out until at least 2015. That means that the show will already be touching WOW material next year when it's only just released, I don't see any conceivable way that George could finish another 1500 page monster before the show ends. I just don't see it.
I've come to accept that I'll see GOT end before I see ASOIAF end and that's ok for me. Not ideal but ok. I could try and avoid the show if I really wanted but I'm pretty sure it's impossible to avoid spoilers about the biggest show on the planet for 3+ whole years until George is ready.
Anyway I'm going on too long and speaking too many harsh truths like the one true king in my avatar :)
Agreed. Even in the book chapters with White Walker/ Other sightings the reader did not get much information.
They have been quite good at keeping some of the lesser seen or never seen elements of the books in series viewers minds! The White Walkers like you mentioned, and I think they have done a good job keeping Theon and Bran up front in people's minds as well.
A lot of sub-plots and tangential elements have been cut of course, but I expected that and do not miss most honestly. However, I do miss the more detailed prophecies from the books.
A Little late to the party (had a very busy weekend), but really enjoyed the episode, especially with the alleged introduction to the Knight's King, especially since there could be a hit and miss with Bran and Jon Snow at Craster's keep, unless the change things to feed into the introduction of this character and if this character takes on a role of another character not yet introduced??? Could really give us insight we don't have in the books as of yet, although I suspect the two could end dramatically differently...It's def interesting to see this baby particularly sacrificed and transformed and I wonder if it mean anything, or if it just was more of a random act?
My favorite scenes were definitely Jaime giving Breinne his sword (Oat Keeper = <3), but I have to say that the scene with Jaime and Cersie from the previous episode seems really out of place since it looks like he's moving on now with little struggle of old Jaime resurfacing in this episode.
Coul to see Ser Pounce! And Margaery is just too good, but Tumon is so innocent and sweet that it's not too surprising (thank heavens they recast Tumon this season though!)
Oh Dany! Not sure if an eye for an eye is best the best policy, but I think she can't deal with "these" people any other way...(and how I loved the Grey Worm and Massandie's scene and talk brief talk of Naath!)
Oh I hate Little Finger...but I can't say I blame Olenna, but I think she under estimates Cersie's wrath! I just wish that she could of gotten Sansa to high garden instead, but then again, where would the upcoming fun be! XD
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
And the reign of Ser Pounce begins
ReplyDeleteMuch better than last week. And the end .... so epic!!
ReplyDeleteAs if they weren't scary enough.................."White Walker Child Care". Wicked episode!
ReplyDelete4 THE IRON THRONE AND THE LAST TARGARYEN, I am Nobody!!!
it was a really shit episode
ReplyDeletegood episode at the end Wow!
ReplyDeleteIt was a good episode, and I am sure I would've enjoyed more, if I hadn't read the books. But as a book reader I gotta say that these changes are really starting to get on my nerves.
ReplyDeleteI love on this show and in the books that when you are devastated when a good character dies they make some absolutely despicable characters that you can't wait to see die. Those Night Watch guys that stayed behind in the camp, no one is going to be sad when they are slaughtered.
ReplyDeleteIt was nice to finally have a few very good scenes at the Wall!
ReplyDeleteSeeing the bulk of the men have Jon's back while Janos Slynt and Alisser Thorne plot was interesting.
XD
- As anticipated, the Bronn and Jaime training scenes are turning out to be so much fun!
XD
- Not sure how I feel about Bran and company being taken by the mutineers.
ETA:
ReplyDeleteKing White Walker?
IS that D&D take on the Night's King legend or the Great Other... or both?
Ha! XD
ReplyDeleteMaybe Lady Whiskers is next!
What is it about loose open necked shirts? Tyrion was h~ooo~t!! ;) seriously PD is so handsome I think I have a crush! And the guys are such bros love Bronn caring about Tyrion, punching Jaime (he deserved it) and telling him to fight for his brother.
ReplyDeleteAww even separated husband and wife believe in the others innocence. Love it and GoT. :) happy gal
For the most part, I have accepted the series is different than the books, two separate entities.... However, that gets so hard at times knowing the brilliant books scenes left on the floor and replaced.
ReplyDeleteMost of the time I understand the need for the changes, but I still get a bit annoyed when scenes seem to be changed for no apparent reason.
ReplyDeleteI am not a book reader (yet - hope that changes this summer), but I really don't like when they make some of the sex scenes more rape-y (Danny/Drogo, Cersei/Jaime).
ReplyDeleteI don't get it either honestly!
ReplyDeleteYes, I understand it is a viscous world and rape is rampant and needs to be shown sometimes, but those two scenes you mention were not rape in the books. They actually changed them to rape for some reason... with no pay off as of yet.
I think there is enough rape already for people to understand the vulgarity of Westeros. Why add more?
HBO has confirmed he's the Night's King.
ReplyDeleteI see a reckoning coming. Book readers gonna start having some real issues with the stuff they're pulling here. Or at least I am. I fully understand changes are necessary, but they are downright slaughtering the story.
ReplyDeleteYou right, It's inevitable that the book series with the tv series will differentiate from each other to some degree at least all things considered, and I too have accepted that. But every time a scene comes up that is little or entirely different from the one I've read in the books, I can't help it but compare one with the other, and the books always come out on top every time.
ReplyDeleteMy main issue however is with some scenes added that weren't in the books.
ReplyDeleteInteresting, that was my first thought, but he fits The Great Other more to me.
ReplyDeleteEither way I like that they used details from the books!
I knew what was coming for the Sansa and her arc with Littlefinger. But I still can't stomach how creepy he is with her. I just cringe through all the his lines.
ReplyDeleteI noticed the changes, but I expected changes to those two arcs (along with Dany) in particular going into the season.
ReplyDeleteThe insight into Craster's Keep with the mutineers works for me.
ReplyDeleteI know right?
ReplyDeleteI think Sansa's book arcs were even creepier though!
More of Joffrey's mind games, the way she interacted with The Hound, and I found Dontos's drunk antics abit odd too honestly! XD
I'm sure the worst of Littlefinger and Sansa is yet to come though.... Sigh.
Do you have the source for that?
ReplyDeleteI still think CH will make an appearance.
ReplyDeleteI loved Coldhands when I read the books, Well, the first 4 books.
ReplyDeleteADWD basically made me lose interest in CH completely since I took him as little more than a controlled minion of Bloodraven. I don't see the point of introducing CH for only an episode or two when we know HBO cast the 3-Eyed Crow/ Bloodraven and he will be introduced soon enough.
SPOILERS for those who have not read the books.
ReplyDeleteTrue enough. But still, CH was such a mysterious character and such a huge part of fans' discussion for such a long time that I think it would be cool if he's included. Also, it would be a nice way to show us CH's identity. Joseph Mawle was spotted in Iceland with the cast. So, fingers crossed.
It would be nice for fans!
ReplyDeleteSadly so many of those nice homages to fans have been left out.
ReplyDeleteHa! XD
ReplyDeleteSome people would flip out if LS was cut from the series!
SOME book readers.
ReplyDeleteYou can't say everyone will agree, I myself don't.
Love it.
Exactly.
ReplyDeleteI dislike some changes and like others, but I expect a lot of changes, in particular with Brienne, Bran and Dany this year.
Re book readers, change and adaptation choices.
ReplyDeleteI like 95% of the changes and I actually like that the show is forging its own path - really they have no choice for several reasons;
Oh yeah I forgot to ask...
ReplyDeleteDid anyone watch with closed captions or actually decipher the name of the boy in the Night's Watch who claimed ot be his village's best archer? The boy whose father was killed by the WIldlings in the previous episode....
He looks a good deal like Brenock O'Connor who was cast as "Guymon" before the season...
I never caught his name, but it did not sound like Guymon to me......
I bet he is taking the place of Satin from the books.
Trying to recall my legend and details about the Night's King, the Others and the Great Other.....
ReplyDeleteWasn't there "White Walkers" before the Night's King?
They built the Wall before the NK so why build the Wall if not for Others/ WWs? Plus, It's theorized his wife was one, right? Who created her or was she the Great Other?
It's the chronology that bothers me I guess, not the other facts surrounding Craster's sons being the foundation of the WWs.... That much I always assumed.
Wuuut? Why?
ReplyDeleteWasn't the Cersei/Jamie sex scene at their childs body written to be rapey in the books as well? I get that Khaleesi's and Drogo's first time was rewritten to be like rape in the show when it wasn't in the books but I think it kinda made sense since she was forced to marry him, I mean realistically, that's what it would be, esp since on the show the dothraki spoke another language so it was much more difficult to smooth her into the idea. It did get better between them as they grew to care for eachother and she learned some moves from the pleasure house girl to help tame Drogo. Which is sexist but somehow I never minded because it seemed well done. A lesser show would not have been able to pull that off.
ReplyDeleteI was so delighted we got Ser Pounce!
ReplyDeleteYeah there was not many scenes that were even similar to book scenes in the episode! XD
ReplyDeleteI won't be able to watch it for a few weeks, what were the revelations at the end?
ReplyDeleteThe problem, IMO, is ASOIAF is not a finished series. And we know GRRM shared information with D&D that readers do not yet possess. So I think some readers will be mad not simply because they're changing the story, but also because they could be introducing spoilers.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy about the changes. Maybe now some of the book readers will stop spoilering and being snobby.
ReplyDeleteI've read the books. But a long time ago. What exactly were the changes made?
ReplyDeleteI read the books aswell, but I don´t mind the chances. If they choose not kill Joffrey off, I would have hated it, but the changes they made are still keeping the story on the right path.
ReplyDeleteLoved every Jaime scene, but especially the Jaime/Brienne scene.
ReplyDeleteI loved the Littlefinger scenes with Sansa.
Yep, was just going to post that.
ReplyDeleteSuch a great episode ! Much better than last week ! I can't understand why there are so much haters, this was the best episode of the season (behind 4x02 and Joffrey's death of course).
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, I believe books and their screen adaptations should be taken as complements to one another, I think the screen gives us things the books can't and books give us things TV can't. I love to have the chance to have and appreciate both.
ReplyDeleteRegarding Danny I'm not sure I see it as justice but I do think she can't afford to have people who hate her hanging arround, it would be risking too much. And I don't know about other Danny fans but one of the things I love most about GOT characters is that they have layers and none is perfect, that's what I love about her too.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that was my biggest fear. Not including LS would make sense from their budget pov. Hopefully you are right and they end the season with LS. That would keep people talking.
ReplyDeleteI love that character and yes I feel it was justice according to that world not cruel. I like her.
ReplyDeleteI am glad we finally found out what was done to the babies. I was worried they were eaten or sacrificed. Very creepy. I am glad the baby didn't freeze to death. Weird that it didn't.
ReplyDeleteWell said.
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the episode we see the last of Craster's male babies being left for the White Walkers by the mutineers.
ReplyDeleteA WW picks it up and transports it across the frozen lands for a long time until it gets to a circle of ice pillars (think Stone Hendge) and then the 5%$&^% Night's King comes out and grabs the baby.
We see a close up of the baby's face as the Night's King moves his finger towards the baby's cheek, touches it, and the baby's yes go ice blue! IT turned it into a White Walker!
That may be an issue for me as we approach the end of the TV series!
ReplyDeleteI do not want the end of ASOIAF series to be spoilered by the TV series and am considering not watching the last season or tw of the series if they pass the series and plan to stick to GRRM's endgame.
I like layers too, even more so in the books where they are more defined...
ReplyDeleteThe thing that bothers me with Dany is she is far less nuanced than in the books and some viewers miss many of her questionable acts or chose to ignore them.
ReplyDeleteEven though Daenerys was one of my two or three least favorite POVs in the books, I did enjoy her arcs at times. Especially the prophecies. By removing the large majority of the prophecies they gutted the character to me.
ReplyDeletePlus, maybe more than any other character, Dany suffers from the lack of time on screen.
ReplyDeleteHa! XD
ReplyDeleteTrue.
One of those fantasy elements that just doesn't adhere to our real world science... Maybe there is some reason though like the WW magic protects the bay... Maybe WW don't just make everything ice cold, but can control the temperature? So they can keep the babies comfy in the Lands of Always Winter?
Who knows!!! XD
ReplyDeleteIt's all rather confusing, isn't it? I've read the books quite a long ago and with all those theories I've read it's all kinda mixed up together. IIRC the Night's King came after the long night and the wall, where he fell in love with a woman who's believe to be a female other. The Great other I believe is a God, or some entity. According to Mel, he is the enemy. She also thinks Brynden rivers and Bran are on his side just like Stannis is R'hilor's champion (he truly isn't though. Who's the good guy and who's the bad I have no idea. Brynden and the COTG seem genuinely trying to help Bran.
ReplyDeleteI'm just happy and perhaps wrong as well, that we got to see the Knight's King.
ReplyDeleteSome believe that some things we see in the show and haven't been mentioned in the books, is an indication of where the series is going in the end, since I remember reading somewhere that the author has talked about that stuff and how it's gonna end with the show's creators. So for now I am good, still hoping my favorite character lives and doesn't end up leading the army of the others and wights to extinguish all life. I still don't like the favoritism Daenerys gets, but what's you gonna do :P
ReplyDeleteI agree 100%, but I do wish changing the story did not mean screwing it up. Right now, I'm not so sure. Seriously, D&D will have to prove themselves to me after that Jaime/Cersei rape scene. It is inconsistent with everything the characters mean and I still can't swallow it.
ReplyDeleteDarqueMode Totally agree. Dany's been reduced to self-righteous one-liners that appeal to the mainstream viewers who take her acts as morally justifiable from the modern perspective. But what else would we expect from the mainstream audience.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I partly hate about the show - they're constantly trying to appeal to the mainstream audience.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I don't want to say what else is left, but it looks like they're fleshing Bran out a bit. I wonder if he'll warg his way out of Craster's or if he'll actually run into Jon for a brief moment before resuming his journey.
I feel the same way about the Bran changes too.
ReplyDeleteAssuming Bran escapes before Jon arrives I don't see any harm in the changes.

ReplyDeleteIs that a change from the books? I've not read them (and probably won't until he releases the next one which if I remember is not for a year or so)
Honestly most of the episode was different than the books in some way, but that scene has never been in the books in any form.
ReplyDeleteIn the books, The Night's King is a legend from The Time of Heroes.
ReplyDeleteCredit D&D with keeping them in the front of our collective memories.
Yeah I was not happy with what happened last week at all and wish they had just cut that scene entirely. I still have faith in D&D but they need to get a handle on sexual violence in the show its getting too much.
ReplyDeleteI understand and I respect that.
ReplyDeleteThey're adapting Book 4 & 5 as we speak to be season 5 which starts filming this summer and we know the show plans to end in 7/8 seasons.
Agreed.
ReplyDeleteEven in the book chapters with White Walker/ Other sightings the reader did not get much information.
Oh well, you gain some, you lose some.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite scenes were definitely Jaime giving Breinne his sword (Oat Keeper = <3), but I have to say that the scene with Jaime and Cersie from the previous episode seems really out of place since it looks like he's moving on now with little struggle of old Jaime resurfacing in this episode.
XD
In the book it wasn't rapey, but Cersei said they should be careful while their father is in the castle.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Bran & co ending up at Craster's keep.
ReplyDelete
