Hart of Dixie - Episode 3.17 - A Good Run of Bad Luck - Review

So far, one of the things this season of Hart of Dixie has most consistently achieved is getting great 90's country songs stuck in my head with the episode titles.  Another winner this week!  In other news, "Lemeorge" tried to figure out if they still had feelings for each other after Zoe got it in her head that fixing them up was the only way to fix her life.  Meanwhile, AnnaBeth came face to face with her mysterious knight, and Wade continued to be stuck in the boring Vivian subplot, poor soul.

Zoe was still all messed up over Joel's departure and their permaneant-feeling "break."  Walking around in her pjs and slippers through the streets of Bluebell, she was feeling very lost and looking for some kind of reason to explain her misery.  Typically, rather than confronting her heartbreak head-on and getting through it by taking up some healthy, engaging hobbies (maybe she should have asked AB for advice?), Zoe perked up only once she got an excuse to delve into wacky hijinks.  This time, she went to a sketchy psychic (I love that Bluebell has a town psychic, b.t.w.) who told her that her bad luck originated from ruining Lemon and George's wedding.  Hence, Zoe decided that if she got those two back together, her own love life would cease to be cursed.  In the sage words of Lavon Hayes, "No.  Nawww.  Noooo!"  Oh, Zoe.
I did enjoy the way Zoe essentially turned into the entire supporting cast of characters from Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, engineering events to push Lemon and George (her Beatrice and Benedick) together.  But the way she crumbled after all of her efforts were dashed by Lemon and George's disastrous dinner date was sad.  It was also maybe a little bit too over-the-top to have Zoe tearfully proclaim that her love life must be cursed, because otherwise, Joel wouldn't be gone.  Only Rachel Bilson, with her ingenious ability to turn Zoe's most daffy melodrama into sincere and heartfelt poignancy, could have carried this off so well.
Lemon and George were both having sexy flashbacks of their night together every time they saw each other, despite still finding each other incredibly annoying.  I didn't quite know what to make of this, which is symptomatic of a season wherein I basically never know where the writers are trying to go with anything.  While there is still a strong physical attraction and there are many lovely memories between these two, that isn't enough to substantiate a real reunion.  All of those tiny idiosyncrasies that start to set off the arguments between "Lemeorge" may be the surface problem, but beyond that I feel that they were restless about their relationship even from the beginning of Season 1 (and previous to that, given Lemon's affair with Lavon).  In my eyes, Lemon and George were a teen romance that kept going past its expiration date, and now it's well past revival.  However, there was the slight implication in this episode that George's feelings for Lemon were perhaps a bit more persistent than hers for him.  Next week, Peter is coming back (swoon, Robert Buckley!), so we'll see what new developments that brings for Lemon, and how George feels about it.
AnnaBeth, Davis...and Lavon: AB found out that her secret admirer was Barry Watson.  Of course it's Barry Watson.  This is the CW.  I'm a longtime fan of his, so I was pleasantly surprised by this news, even though his charmingly shy character turned out to be related to the Mayor of Fillmore.  That last bit definitely means that Davis is a plot device to throw AnnaBeth back into Lavon's orbit, which kind of irks me given that I'm ready to let go of AB/Lavon.

This is my instinct, not least of all because Lemon and Lavon have unfinished business that leaves a noticeable chemistry lingering between them.  This week, when Lemon showed up at Lavon's door to confide in him about her issues with George, I was like, Season 1 flashback, what what?  Lavon was also quite loathe to hear anything about Zoe's plans to reunite "Lemeorge," to my mind not only because it was more crazy Zoe shenanigans which always implode.  To have Lavon and AnnaBeth get back together just feels like sweeping their issues under the rug, reverting them back to where they were at the start of the season, and continuing to not address Lavon/Lemon's unresolved story.  However, who knows?  Maybe Davis is more than a superficial Guest Star Love Interest.  With Watson in the role, clearly this is possible.
Wade and Vivian: Ughh, you guys.  I am so far past ready to say goodbye to this dull, chemistry-free pairing.  It's irritating that Wade has finally cleaned up his act and become a stand-up guy for someone who isn't Zoe, first of all....even though what happened with Zoe was his ultimate wake-up call to change his ways, and if Zoe hadn't rejected him, he'd never be with Viv.  Moreover, Wade is so declawed now that I would actually really like to see some of his old mischievous ways come back.  Bottom line, and sorry not sorry, I don't care about Vivian, her son, or her ex-husband.  Someone rescue Wade from this subplot!

What did you think of this week's Hart of Dixie?  In this game of romantic musical chairs, who do you want to see get together during the remaining episodes of Season 3?  Share your thoughts in the comments!

  5. Thx for the review Virginia. I have a feeling VW is breaking up soon and ZW will be moving towards each other. We all know that when she asked if she had made a big mistake letting the right guy walk away it was foreshadowing about Wade. I also wanted to show you this: http://zoeswade.tumblr.com/post/82546918781 -

  7. Great Review. I am so excited to see Robert Buckley again! I think that they have beaten the dead horse that is George and Lemon's relationship, and it's time for someone new and exciting (ROBERT BUCKLEY). He would be a fantastic addition to the cast, even if it's only on a recurring basis.

Wade and Vivian are SO boring. I found myself fighting the urge to fast forward through their scenes. Hopefully, it is only a matter of time before he breaks up with Viv for Zoe!

Can I just say that the whole "Joel might be the one" is too far fetched even for Zoe? Am I the only one who remembers she being kissed by Wade and being clearly shaken up about it, while she was with Joel? And that for my endless sorrow, she never told Joel about it? Which would probably sved us all the Vivian non sense and Joels too long staying?? And, since this might be actually the show's last season, Zade has to be the endgame of the season (and since they literally pressed fast foward on the Joel/Zoe relationship to ended it as fast as they could, they probably realized exactly that).

  10. Well said! I agree, I really feel like Zoe putting so much emphasis on Joel being "the one" was majorly over the top. We want Zade back ASAP! :)

  11. I agree with everything you said. Wade is boring with Vivian. He's evolved yes, but is he still even Wade? I never thought George and Lemon were great together. On paper they seem like they would be a great match but on screen it doesn't work for me. I wouldn't mind seeing Zoe show some interest in George again. We never got to see that play out. I also agree with you that I have no idea what the writers are doing or planning. It's so erratic.

  12. Yeah, I actually almost mentioned in my review that it's also bizarre they never did anything with Zoe and George actually together. I mean, I don't ship it, but they had way more together and were better than Zoe/Joel, anyway, and the show spent so much time building up George/Zoe/Wade as a triangle. Hmm!

Cause they were boring and annoying. To be honest Zoe and George would piss me more that Joel. I liked when Joel came in for the fist time. I thought would be smart to bring someone to Zoe's life that was everything she thought she wanted, and then realize it didn't work. Like, when there was that Zade kiss, I thought it would lead her into a realization of her feelings for Wade, and getting it cold with Joel. The jealousy of hers with Vivian, the moment on her birthday party. It looked like that was the writers plan. But, Joel as a character alone was so annoying, and had so little interesting things to do, and was so blend, that the rejection towards him was gigantic, and they had to rush it and put Joel into a plane, literally. And although I'm glad he's gone, it cut the idea short. With Joel being gone, Zoe got into a state that it would have worked if he hadn't left. That wasn't about their relationship, which was annoying. But, the little chat she had with Lavon, about the fact that was her who cut it short, that was her that didn't want to go be with him, so, basically, it probably wasn't that big of a deal, gives me hope. But the fact that they put Wade with ZOE'S COUSIN is what makes me most angry. Cause Wade can't be the one who cuts it short, cause if he breaks with Vivian to be with Zoe, Zoe will likely lose her family, and would be awful. So, Vivian has to be the one who breaks up with him. But since those two are dating, Wade didn't have any "hint" that he's still in love with Zoe. Like, nothing. Not a comment, not a look, nothing. It makes me mad. Is like he's so damn happy, and so focused, and I hope they make him drink too much, or blown up and say something to Zoe about those feelings being buried because she had someone else that turned out to be a good friend of his, or maybe wanting to be just better for her, but since she was the one who never came back, he had given up on her. SOMETHING!! Cause, I'm not liking this right now.
