With more than a million downloads in half a day, the premiere of Game of Thrones' fourth season has set a new piracy record. People from all over the world grabbed a copy, and at its height this morning over 300,000 BitTorrent users were sharing the episode simultaneously.
Data gathered by TorrentFreak reveals that half a day after the first episode appeared online over a million people have already grabbed a copy via a torrent site. Earlier this morning, more than 300,000 people were actively sharing one of the three most-popular torrents.
In addition to the downloads, we also looked at the countries people were sharing from. A sample of 18,333 IP-addresses collected over the day shows that Australia takes the crown with 11.6% of the total. The United States is a good second with 9.3%, followed by the United Kingdom with 5.8%.

ReplyDeleteI'm surprised the UK is that high, although almost all of that 5.8% would be non-Sky subscribers, since it was simulcast.

Yeah, but to be fair, does that include those who used Sky+ because they're sane and are in bed at 2am? (NB: I was still awake, but not for GoT - yes, I am insane).
ReplyDeleteProbably not, but I think the figures in the post show that most people downloaded it. People aren't going to pay for Sky just for one or two shows when they get them illegally instead. I think networks are going to have to find new ways to get round these problems if they want to solve them, lol.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I know. My point was exactly that - that all of those from the UK would've been non-Sky subscribers. TBH Sky's prices are so high the only way to get around them is to lower the price, which they won't do because they're stingy.

ReplyDeleteIt's ridiculous. My theory always is that the lower the price, the more people will buy it, therefore they will make a similar amount of profit as they currently do. Higher price = less buying it, therefore potential for less profit.
ReplyDeleteQuite frankly, the more downloaded illegally, the better. Only then will the draconian idiots who's only goal is to rip the fans off, even flinch an eyelid.
ReplyDeleteAnd hey, I don't even like, nor watch the show! I just add it to my collection of several thousand television episodes in case one day I do decide to watch it -- by then it won't be available to buy at all. Not that I can buy it legally in the first place anyway!

ReplyDeleteNo surprise but HBO always seem quite proud of the fact, doesn't seem to damper the DVD sales judging by how well the boxsets are doing on Amazon (in the UK at least) right now!

ReplyDeleteEach year (or couple times a year) some show will break the old record, and that show will usually have huge ratings in addition. Then months later that same show will have good DVD and BD sales as well. The piracy does not hurt juggernaut TV series - it helps them!
Just a side-effect of the current system and how the industry is set up.
