CASTLE – SEASON FINALE – “For Better Or Worse” – Castle and Beckett's long-awaited wedding is almost here, but when a shocking surprise threatens to ruin the big day, they are sent on a wild mission filled with masked men, angry bikers and a charming ne'er-do-well from Beckett's past (guest star Eddie McClintock as Rogan O’Leary). MONDAY, MAY 12 (10:01-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
Well they've already played the "Kate is not going to fall for the charms of another guy while she is with Castle" card last season to disastrous effect with Eric Vaughn (Ioan Gruffudd)...it was probably the worst episode of Season 5! So I don't think the writers have run out of ideas already that they are so desperate to stick a 'former flame' of Kate to disrupt the wedding day & make the finale more interesting. - I mean what are they gonna try to make the distraction of this guy significant...that a life with him would have been vastly different & better that Kate's current one? Lets not forget that her life was a total mess when Castle entered it (except for perhaps her job as a detective). So he could not have been that important to confuse her now on her wedding day as he clearly did not enter her life after Castle (or we would have seen it over the past 5 seasons if he was so important). - Okay I've run out of sensible ideas...why the hell is this guy important for her to have the sort of "Wow!" reaction she is having in the photo above? It's driving me crazy!
Frankly, I don't expect anything creative from AM, all his talents are reduced to check the box office hitlists and the popular tv shows for "inspiration", but nowhere in the released materials had been mentioned anything about Beckett and McClintock's character as romantic. "Conflicted" was the word they used, so I don't think it's about any past flame. At least I hope they don't copycat yet another plot from Bones (Angela's not-so-ex).
The Joanna-Bracken plot is one of the most boring and uninteresting thread in any of the present shows - it should have been ended seasons ago. Marlowe's "the bigger the better" hubris made it completely ridiculous, it's so oversized now that I doubt it will be closed for good in this season. If they finish with the so much omnipowered enemy in a snap in one episode it will be a joke but at least we don't have to suffer any further kicking of this dead horse.
By "Bracken's storyline" I meant everything to do with Kate's mother's murder from Season 1. It is a little tiring to use all those words every time hence I used the term "Bracken's storyline" for brevity. Yes while everything to do with Bracken since Season 5 wasn't brilliant, 'After the Storm' & 'In the Belly of the Beast' were executed quite well.
Besides prior to Bracken's intro, episodes like 'Always', 'Knockdown', 'Knockout', 'Sucker Punch', which dealt with this storyline were considered to be some of the very best episodes of Castle, Hence the use of the phrase "so-far brilliantly executed Bracken storyline".
- Right now it it very difficult to be entirely original for a show boss, what with the thousands of shows & concepts that have preceded over the past decade. Only a handful of shows like Person of Interest & Orphan Black can claim to be truly original. Even Game of Thrones, Arrow, The Americans & Mad Men are heavily based either on novels, comic books or real-life events from past decades. Still AM regularly manages to meld a collection of existing ideas to give a thoughtful & exciting product unlike most of those CBS, NBC or CW shows that are aping the concepts of CSI, 24 & Buffy respectively but creating very poor dumbed down versions.
- While nothing romantic is mentioned about McClintock'c character, just take a look at the promo photo above. Kate is not looking at him like he was just a former fleeting confidant, a suspect in a case, or anybody she met briefly. She is clearly looking at him with genuine happiness on her face...like when she was in the beginning phases of her relationship with Demming. That's what has me worried.
- "The Joanna-Bracken plot is one of the most boring and uninteresting thread in any of the present shows". Well I don't agree with you. For instance episodes that dealt with this plot have been some of the very best of Castle (Always, Knockout, Knockdown, Sucker Punch, After the Storm, In the Belly of the Beast for example)...leading right up to Season 6. Sure there have been a few disappointing episodes like Recoil but an overwhelming majority have been executed well. But again I am not entirely happy at the direction Castle has been taking at times which is why I mentioned in my post that using a romantic distraction in the finale would make me quit Castle.
Ever since this "one" picture and press release came out there have been so many feels going around in the fandom and meanwhile the cast and crew from the show are laughing behind their screen about all those feels xD
IMHO "creative" and "original" doesn't mean the same, I used the former not just by chance. Castle has never been original in the sense of the concept or the story, but in the first two, two and a half seasons (roughly till the middle of S3, when the show got an early order for the next season in January) the characters were good and the evaluation of the not-so-original cases were good. Since then it constantly goes downhill.
The mombatross plotline "best before" date was about the end of S4, the latest. Since then AM neither can let it go nor can he find any meaning to it. The last installment (BotB) for example was either good or bad (YMMV, IMHO in a serious episode that many plotholes are a total shame), but what good was in it, it had nothing to do with the Bracken case. Should have there been the druglord from the end of S4 instead of Vulcan Simmons, the episode would have worked the same way. And the contrast that it should be an ever threatening Damocles sword in their mind yet they never ever think about it outside the Very Special Beckett's Mother Case episodes makes it completely impossible to me to care about it when it surfaces - if it doesn't bother them, why should I care?
Notice the shoulder on the right side of pic by Beckett.....bet that is Castle. Good of TPTB to cut him out to make the fandom go nuts. Also she is wearing her ring as noted by others. The mother/bracken storyline is done in esp 6.22 as reveled in previous spoiler information from someone who watched filming. (was on this site also)
Such a negativity because of a single photo:) Well, I read the synopsis and it says that when shocking news threaten to ruin the big day, it sends them - as in "together" - into a wild run! Now, if those news were a major issue no way they would be together, so I´m thinking it´s external to them. If I had to guess, I´d say that in that run somehow they run into Eddie character (and I still think he´s someone from Beckett´s romantic past) so he´s not the reason of the trouble; who knows if he won´t help them solve the problem?!:) And because I suppose there´ll be some cliffhanger, I think it´ll appear by the end of the episode and it won´t have nothing to do with the previous shocking news:). BTW, I read an article where a journalist asked Seamus Dever if the fans would go trough the summer happy or sad/angry and he answered it would be none of them, that fans would be "intrigued" - probably he was just teasing, but if not I can´t think of anything to intrigue me...
I wouldn't call the Johanna Beckett murder mystery as brilliantly executed. It fell off the rails when they made it this vast conspiracy that makes Bracken virtually untouchable.
After Belly of the Beast I wondered if I was reading a Robert Ludlum novel.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Thanks for the photo. Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteDo we know anything about this episode beside someone from Beckett past shows up?
ReplyDeleteBeckett looks crosseyed in the pic :P
ReplyDeleteSpoilers abound here.Check out tv guides,& TVLine, from the past week.

Babar posted the official synopsis below.
ReplyDeleteAw, I was hoping we'd see her dress (please be a different one than that horrible one we saw).
ReplyDeleteMust not be an official reason to be in the bar, she's wearing the ring...

But then again, this IS Andrew Marlowe.

Why did I think he was coming on 6x22?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, pretty sure now there'll be a quick city hall wedding at the end of the ep.
"so-far brilliantly executed Bracken storyline".
ReplyDeleteLOL you're joking right? There's nothing brilliant in that storyline.
THIS!

But to each their own.
A cliffhanger happens by the end of the episode? OMG, what a surprise!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I know what you meant. Just thought you thought the whole story including Bracken was brilliant.
ReplyDeleteIt went off the rails when they got Bracken involved. They should just left it with Smith.
And now the interview with seamus, stores are gonna run out of popcorn soon.
