Broadcast Networks' Pilots 2014 - More Early Buzz from Deadline

19 Apr 2014

Thanks to Wolf for the heads up.
We’re heading into the homestretch of pilot season as the broadcast networks are beginning to view and test the completed pilots, a process that will continue for about two weeks before the nets move on to making pickup and scheduling decisions. Based on buzz around town, here are the most talked-about pilots three weeks before the upfronts.

Every year, there is at least one pilot that comes out of nowhere and surprises everyone. We may have that this season in ABC‘s multi-camera Cristela. It was not even supposed to be a pilot. Developed at 20th TV-based 21 Laps/Adelstein for more than a year, the semi-autobiographical project co-created by and starring rising Latina stand-up comedian Cristela Alonzo was sold to ABC last summer with significant penalty. But when pilot-pickup time came along, ABC quickly loaded on high-profile sitcoms, including the 20th TV-produced The Winklers, starring Henry Winkler, and the untitled Kevin Hart project starring Romany Malco. Cristela didn’t get a pilot order, alonzobut the producers, who also are behind ABC’s Tim Allen sitcom Last Man Standing, decided to take the penalty, which I hear was about $500,000, and use it to shoot a presentation. (ABC called it “proof of concept.”) Cristela ended up filming a full-length pilot on the stage of Last Man Standing using that sitcom’s crew, led by director/co-exec producer John Pasquin, with very little time to rehearse and prep. Because it was supposed to be a presentation, Cristela was not budgeted to get a testing, but I hear 20th TV brass liked the finished product and had it tested. I hear the results blew expectations, with Alonzo, who has no previous acting experience, scoring higher than most stars in recent 20th TV comedy pilots, including Allen, New Girl‘s Zooey Deschanel and The Crazy Ones‘ Robin Williams.

  1. I'm glad to hear that The Messengers is getting good buzz and that Bloodlines isn't such a certain thing! Can anybody explain to me what the penalty regarding Cristela is about please?

  2. Once again no buzz about the Melissa George/Katy Holmes project on ABC.

  3. I wonder how many pilots The CW will order for next season.

  4. Glad that A to Z is getting some buzz. Can't wait to see Cristin on screen again.

  5. I really want The Visitors to be picked up.

  6. How I Met Your Dad has to be put down, let other comedies have a shot.
While not a fan of JD Pardo's work on Revolution, I do hope The Messengers gets a pick up, the premise is interesting and if it is well developed it could turn out great

  7. ABC: Is it me or do American Crime, Secrets & lies, Sea of Fire and How To Get Away With Murder all look vaguely similar? They are all set around a murder in a small town/local community. Also, they mostly look like miniseries to me. Elsewhere, not a lot that seems very interesting besides maybe Warriors.

CBS: A big yes to NCIS: New Orleans and Red Zone. Madam Secretary and the Kevin Williamson stalker project also sound interesting. Unsure about the CSI spinoff. CBS has the most interesting pilots for me.

NBC: Coercion and State of Affairs seem interesting, although the later one sounds a bit similar to Madam Secretary. Possibly The Mysteries of Laura and Odyssey. Maybe Salvation for Ashley Judd.

Fox: There is nothing on Fox that I would definitely want to go to series. Maybe The Middle Man is an intersting project.

The CW: Identity seems interesting. Still not sure about The Flash. It looks great and I love Arrow, but I don't know about the super powers.

  8. Hoping that these get to be series:

NBC: State Of Affairs, Coercion, Tim Man and Salvation. The Mysteries of Laura and Odyssey are so-so, and the comedies don't interest me that much
ABC: Clementine, Exposed, Forever, Galavant, Sea Of Fire, Selfie, Warriors, Visitors
    CW: Flash, iZombie, Messengers
FOX: Nothing, as they've already picked up 4 dramas (Backstrom, Gotham, Heiroglyphs, Gracepoint)
    CBS: Madam Secretary

Eager to see already ordered to series shows Secrets and Lies, Astronauts Wives Clubs, all of Fox's new dramas, A.D., Emerald City and Battle Creek! Should be an awesome upcoming TV season!

I want CBS' Madam Secretary picked up.

This + Good Wife = CBS as my sunday network (except for SNF Seahawks games).

There are some scripts that carry a penalty fee if the network does not shot the pilot. Cristela is an example, if ABC had refused to shot the pilot, they would've been penalized on $500,000

  11. Thank you! Do you know why some scripts carry penalties and some don't?

There is not a exact pattern, but most shows with big names (either starring, either as executive producers) are produced under put pilot rules.

  13. I really want iZombie, The Flash and The Messengers to get picked up. As for the other networks....

ABC: Meh, none sound all that interesting to me, not even Agent Carter since it wouldn't be set in current time along with AoS and the movies (however, I would definitely tune in for a summer airing).

CBS: I remember watching old reruns of The Odd Couple when I was a kid so I would probably check it out if it went to series. As for Dramas...the NCIS spin off and Red Zone for sure. Maybe on the CSI spin off...I miss CSI:NY!

NBC: Constantine and State of Affairs, maybe Tin Man.

    Fox: Gotham and maybe Empire.

  14. Damn. No mention of 'Forever' at ABC. I'm still rooting for New Amsterdam 2 to get picked up.

I can't wait for Constantine and State of Affairs.. Next season is gonna be packed :)
Can someone help me with something? I remember reading about this new pilot about a detective who solves a crime and discovers this woman in a psych ward who already solved it then he seeks her out .. I tried looking for it in the pilot watch sheet but i didn't find it so if anyone remembers it kindly tell me i wanna put it on my watch-list .. Thanks ^_^

  16. "I really want iZombie, The Flash and The Messengers to get picked up."

They most likely will. The CW usually picks up more shows than they pass on.

  17. As always, it will depend somewhat on how many current shows The CW drops the hammer on.

  18. There's a full list of network pilots @ Deadline but none of the drama pilots fit that exact description. Are you sure you're not combining two different pilots? The closest I come is...

    Clementine
LOGLINE: A habitual criminal digs into the mystery of her origins after
she becomes the target of a group of zealots who fear she possesses
latent supernatural abilities that she will one day harness for either
    profound good or monstrous evil.

    and...

    Agatha
    LOGLINE: A character-driven procedural about a former
convict-turned-big-city criminologist who is brought in to help local
police crack a case involving a perplexing disappearance. The chief
detective she’s been hired to help is her father – and they haven’t
    talked in 15 years.

If you combine those two, it comes close to your description.

I'm 70% sure that's how i read it 'coz i thought "hmmm, that's an intriguing plot" & the main lead was a guy not a woman but there's a possibility that i confused two together. Although I did read it here on SPTV 'coz I remember the gray background.. Anyways, thank you so much for the reply :) I gotta dig deeper into SPTV older posts

  23. Here is SpoilerTV's pilot spreadsheet: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/06/2014-full-pilot-watch-spreadsheet.html

I am one of the people responsible for updating, and I don't remember one similar to the plot you described.
