With less than a month until the upfronts, we’re kicking off our annual Pilot Buzz series. As usual, the first edition only includes a limited number of projects that have been garnering early attention as many pilots are still filming. So, if a pilot is not mentioned, it probably means it is too early to weigh in or the feedback I’ve received is inconclusive at this time.
Shonda Rhimes. Viola Davis. Need we say more? ABC’s sexy suspense legal thriller How To Get Away With Murder, executive produced by Rhimes and starring Davis, is packing some heat early on. Secret & Lies starring Ryan Phillippe also is getting encouraging early response. It also has a seven-figure penalty and is directed by Charles McDougall, whose strong pilot record includes Desperate Housewives, The Good Wife and most recently, Resurrection last season. Then there is Marvel’s stealth Agent Carter project. Last year, the company went into Fort Knox mode on its Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot, which was kept under lock and key. They took that a notch further this year with carterAgent Carter. Because there is a prototype — the project is inspired by a one shot, which was featured on the Blu-ray release of Iron Man 3 — word has been that it would forgo a pilot and go straight to series. The script was finished more than three months ago (“the script is great,” ABC’s Paul Lee said back in January), the option on one-shot’s star Hayley Atwell came up and was extended, but the green light never came. Now there is talk that a pickup for Agent Carter may come along with a renewal for Marvel’s freshman Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., with the new series possibly serving as a bridge between the fall and spring portions of S.H.I.E.L.D. Also getting various level of early traction at ABC is mystery Sea of Fire and several dark horses, alien drama The Whispers (aka The Visitors), medical drama The Warriors and mystery Clementine.

I always like this!
ReplyDeleteI wondered why Agent Carter didn't get a green light. I like the idea of It serving as a bridge b/w AoS season half. And this also means that AoS will run in two batches, with no breaks in between episode So this is a win win.
ReplyDeleteMore comments coming as I read the rest.

I've been looking forward to this!
ReplyDeleteBut I'm confused - pretty sure Gotham's already been ordered to series.
It has been ordered to series
ReplyDeletehttp://tvline.com/2013/09/24/fox-orders-to-series-gotham/
Yep, it has been.
ReplyDeleteActually, I checked and it has a series commitment and not a series order.
ReplyDeleteI want The MESSENGERS. There's no word of it, please order CW.
ReplyDeleteSeries commitment with a hefty penalty i heard.
ReplyDeleteReally hope Agent Carter gets picked up, I love Hayley Atwell so much and seeing Old Peggy in The Winter Soldier made me long for her character to have a bigger presence.
ReplyDeleteAh, I love pilot season.
ReplyDeleteA lot of shows based on comics this year which i like, not really much else. We'll see how Supernatural Bloodlines turns out, but if there is a show that didn't need a spin-off it is that show. It also sounds way too similar to The Originals
ReplyDeleteABC: I'm lookin' foward for the Marvel's Agent Carter show on the drama side. Hayley Atwell is one of my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI'm not particulary a fan of Kevin Hart and Romany Malco but i'm a big fan of black family comedy so can't wait to see their comedy.
CBS: the Kevin Williamson stalker project. Just because i love Williamson and the McDermott/Maggie Q pairing looks great.
NBC: Constantine and Tin Man.
FOX: Empire. Love this black cast (Terrence Howard, Taraji Henson...)
CW: iZombie (because of Veronica Mars' Rob Thomas) and Flash.
Sad there are no news about CW's Thr Messengers and AbC's Dangerous Liasons project. I really like their casts.
ReplyDelete- Kinda excited about Agent Carter, ABC really made a poor decision with OUATIW this year. I SHOULD have been a bridging series to see if the system works (and I'm convinced that it would have worked).
ReplyDeleteAgent Carter bridging over AoS over the hiatus sounds like an excellent idea !! More bridging shows/spin-offs (shortened to 10-13 episodes) should happen anway IMO.
- How I Met Your Dad is unavoidable, HIMYM was huge and I get that CBS wants to repeat that success as soon as possible
- I have never been the biggest NCIS fan but I did enjoy the backdoor pilot for New Orleans.
- the CSI spin-off doesen't really manage to spark any interest on my end, we already have Intelligence
- theCW spin-offs aren't really my cup of tea. Bloodlines sounds like it's merely using the Supernatural brand as a ratings-boost and the Flash didn't really manage to excite me in his two appearances on Arrow....now iZombie is something I'd love to watch
Really excited for Supernatural: Bloodlines, The Flash and iZombie!
ReplyDeleteSo series commitment is actually series order which only has to go through the pilot and official pick up to series stage? Is it what you mean?
ReplyDeletei think the flash is gonna depend mainly on how good the cgi is ....
ReplyDeleteYep pretty much. They have to give a pretty hefty penalty if they don't give it order it to series, which rarely ever happens. As you can read, the source article says that Gotham is "pretty much on air [sic]".
ReplyDeletein cw i hear they r gonna air shows without too many breaks this fall,so i guess three pilots can be picked up .
ReplyDeleteCW:
spn:bloodlines-- mainly cuz of spn ratings have actually grown up over the past 2 yrs,so cw might think why not?
izombie-creator of veronica mars.solid fanbase from the prev show.my thoughts of zombie belongs only in post apocalyptic version not in modern world fiction.its cw version of twd.
flash--on some interview mark pretty much confirmed it is ON ON.
I think it's safe to say FOX will air it. They put up the official website on FOX.com already anyway.
ReplyDelete"I hope Jane the Virgin never sees the light of day." 2
ReplyDeleteHa
ReplyDeleteThe same was said for devious maids and look how that turned out haha
