[Laughs] Are you tired of hearing that, yet? Have people been saying that to you a lot?
Well no, they haven't been doing the "Hail HYDRA" thing but people have been looking at me differently since then, because before the character was so stalwart and so well-intentioned that they fell in love with that, and they felt in some kind of way betrayed. "Oh, man I really liked this guy!" It's funny, I do get a lot of texts from friends -- this is real -- who have co-workers that have kids or have kids themselves, and they'll watch it, and the kids have a much different opinion of me now! [Laughs] That was kind of funny.

Great, now I can't stop picturing Ward and Garrett singing "Be Prepared" from The Lion King.
ReplyDeletethat made me laugh out loud
ReplyDeleteFunny bits:
ReplyDelete"it's not like the writers flip a switch and all of a sudden, Ward is evil and I'm twirling my mustache and I'm petting a cat for the rest of the season"
"think about how much fun pirates must have! Geez!"
Except the writers did flip a switch and all of a sudden Ward is evil...*pouts*
ReplyDeleteHe is so dying
ReplyDeleteNot really; we knew before that there were a spy among the group. Melinda was the prime suspect, having a secure secret line on the plane and all, but Coulson did suspected Ward, too, after Ward shot the fake Clairvoyant. Turns out he was right at that point! Honestly, I really want to rewatch the season once it's all done, trying to look at his action from a ''hey, he's actually evil'' point of view! :p
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't all of a sudden. The clues were there, most people just didn't see them.
ReplyDeleteIn the Pilot, Coulson tells Ward he has the highest espionage marks since Natasha Romanoff... a former spy and assassin who betrayed a lot of people before she reformed. In the end of 1x12, when Coulson voice-overs "the world is full of evil and lies and death and pain, and you can't hide from it, you can only face it" while Skye looks at the SHIELD memorial wall, the camera pans over to Ward watching her.
ReplyDeleteThese are just two tidbits the producers mentioned in a post-1x17 interview. And then you have the fact that Garrett, who was clearly always meant to be a traitor, was established as the guy who had been Ward's SO. So they've definitely dropped clues, they've just been subtle, as to not give it away completely. I don't think Ward being HYDRA contradicts anything we'd seen before the reveal, so I'm inclined to believe them that this had been the plan all along.
I re-watched a few episodes and I noticed one thing (among many) - that he makes too many mistakes in the field to be the super-spy he was supposed to be (without the knowledge that he works for the other tam, I mean). Take "The Hub" for example. He didn't know his contact was dead and that he wasn't popular, and got himself and Fitz captured. Before that, in the episode where Skye betrayed the team to her boyfriend, Ward spooked Miles and let him escape. The spot he chose in the Coulson kidnapping episode was a rookie mistake. Maybe even getting captured by Lorelei. There were too many mistakes for it to be a coincidence, if he was supposed to be the super-spy they painted him to be.
ReplyDeleteBut if we look at those mistakes through the "Ward is actually sabotaging Coulson's missions" lens, then it all suddenly makes sense.
"Singing Homeland Intervention Enforcement Logistics Division"... Brett is hilarious.
