Last night, The Walking Dead continued its fourth season with an all new episode, “Alone”. After a disappointing episode last week, I really hoped “Alone” would be so much better than “Still” but I was disappointed again.
I love The Walking Dead, but seriously, I did not enjoy this episode at all. I don’t mind the characters being separated, I like the danger surrounding them but once again, The Walking Dead characters acted very stupidly, and it’s getting boring.
It put me back right in season 2. There were good scenes, with walkers attacks but otherwise, it wasn’t very interesting.
It was only about two groups : Daryl and Beth and Maggie, Sasha and Bob. Daryl and Beth’ story was a bit better than Maggie and her friends’. Maggie, Sasha and Bob were in a dangerous situation : they have only six bullets left, walkers keep attacking them when there was fog all over them and they had no shelter, no place to hide and feel safe. They needed to move but Maggie wanted to find Glenn first. But, they found the train tracks before. Bob revealed he listened to a radio message from the sanctuary. So, Maggie decided they had to go to the “terminus”, because it's what Gleen would have done. Bob agreed but Sasha found it was too good to be true so she didn’t want to get there… Very stupid from her. Yeah, it’s horrible you’re surviving in the woods, there is a shelter not that far and you don’t want to go… Stupid.
So, they all went by the train tracks. After one night, Sasha and Bob woke up to find Maggie had left them, because she didn’t want them to risk their lives for her… Okay, very stupid again. If you’re in group, you don’t leave them to be surviving alone. It’s more dangerous all alone with walkers everywhere and Sasha and Bob are risking their lives anyways. Bob wanted to follow Maggie and find her back, Sasha did not but still she went along.
While Maggie was leaving blood signs for Glenn to know where she was heading, Bob and Sasha argued again about following Maggie or not. Sasha wanted to find a safe place, have some sleep and take shelter. Bob trying to convince her if Tyreese was alive, he would be at the terminus. When they came across an abandoned factory, Sasha found the perfect place to stay. Bob tried a speech, which didn’t work (it wasn’t a very good speech, nobody believes he is not afraid) and he even kissed her. That came out of nowhere, but I can understand why some human contact can feel good in those apocalyptic times and how it could have affected asha. But that did not work either.
Anyway, they finally decided to split. Once again, terrible stupid idea. Why splitting when you’re only two ? You can work on a compromise people. If you’re alone, you really have less chance of surviving. Sasha went into the old factory and that was when the episode went downhill for me. What happened next was so stupid.
Sasha saw Maggie lying down on the ground by a window. She approached the window and let it fall. The noise attracted walkers, so Maggie and Sasha killed them. After the fight, Maggie explained she was waiting for Sasha and Bob because she could not survive alone… So, girl, you’re waiting hidden on the ground behind a truck ? Why no go back on the train tracks ? And why leaving in the first place ? It was very stupid, they’re lucky to be alive. In a more realistic world, they would be dead. So, they went looking for Bob now, and they found him on the train tracks. They're all reunited !
So, what happened in this episode for Maggie, Bob and Sasha was pointless. They are back to the beginning, three of them walking down the train tracks. I really did not enjoy or understand the point of their story. I wish Bob or Sasha had been killed, at least something would have happened in the episode.
Daryl and Beth continued their adventure together from last week. Now, he was teaching her how to track. Beth was a fast learner but she still needed Daryl’s help to kill a walker. Later, they walked into a cemetery and they hold a funeral for Hershel. It was very touching and I’m glad for Beth she could say goodbye to her father in some way. It's always better to get closure.
Daryl and Beth found a very nice house by the cemetery, very clean and with food and drinks. It was a perfect safe place. It even had a piano so Beth could play and sing. It was actually a funeral home. It could have been creepy but zombies trying to eat you alive is way more creepy than this. They even considered staying in that house.
So they stayed there and Daryl showed he was a good man, because he didn’t take all the food, in case people were living there. Daryl and Beth’s relationship is evolving, they seem to care more about each other, probably because they’re surviving together. Still, it was nice to see Daryl being more open and smiling. At last, Beth found something to do and now she felt relevant. I don't know if it's a romantic connection starting between them, but it was good to watch them acting normal for once.
But at night, Daryl had a stupid reaction. So, now even if Daryl is starting to act stupid, I’m starting to lose confidence in the show. He heard the dog barking, so he went and opened the front door. He didn’t even check before if people were there… or walkers. So, when he opened the door, a lot of walkers tried to get in. It was a nice scene, quite scary but we knew Daryl would be okay, so there wasn’t that much suspense and Beth ran quickly, we didn’t even see her so it was hard to care also. When Daryl finally got out the house, he ran and watched Beth leaving in a car… I don’t think the girl was stupid enough to just drive without waiting for Daryl. She had to be with someone else, maybe who took her without waiting for Daryl. Surely, not someone from the prison. We will see. I hope she'll be okay.
So Daryl was all alone, but he had still hopes to find Beth back so he walked down the road but he finally came to a crossroad and Beth left no signs to where she went. Poor Daryl, when he starts to get closed to someone, they disappear. So, he sat down the road, waiting for Beth to come. Only, it wasn’t Beth but a group of five armed men. Their leader saw great potential in Daryl as he was using a crossbow and not a gun. It meant he was good (and he is !) so he would take him with his group.
Those guys are probably the one who whom Glenn and Daryl will stay because for the opening scene was actually a flash forward. Daryl, in a motorcycle again !, and Glenn, in a car, found a lonely Bob surviving (and a bit drunk). They asked him Rick’s three questions and Bob revealed he killed one person, who asked for it. Was it Sasha, Maggie or someone else ?
I was disappointing by this scene also. Now, we know Glenn and Daryl would be okay, so there isn’t much suspense when we watch them now. When Daryl got attacked at the funeral home, or when Bob got bitten by a walker, I didn’t really care. Apparently, neither of them recognized Bob from the prison, Bob didn’t recognize them either. I thought they had met at some point back there. So, their reunion felt quite weird and a bit pointless.
Edit : Ok, I may had been suffering from my sickness while watching the episode, but it was clearly a flashback and not a flashforward. Sorry, but still, it doesn't change my opinion on this scene. It was pointless. We knew Bob had survived alone, we knew it's tough, we've wacthed it with other characters.
“Alone” was not a great episode in my opinion. I didn’t understand the characters, their actions and psychologies so I kinda lose my interest watching it. I enjoyed the theme, loneliness but it wasn’t used as I thought it would be.
The episode demonstrated how dangerous it is to be alone and that being in a group makes you stronger, even if there can be differences between people. It’s still safer to be with somebody else.
What I really dislike in “Alone” was the fact the people wanting to be alone finally realized they needed to be together and found their group back (Maggie and Sasha) and the ones wanting to stay together got separated (Daryl and Beth). I know, in life, things don’t usually happen the way you would want them to, but I found the way Maggie and Sasha got reunited and how Daryl got separated for Beth was not well written. It felt out of characters for Daryl and Maggie to act like that.
I don’t know what the writers tried to do, but clearly it didn’t work on me. But you, what did you think of “Alone” ? Did you enjoy it ? Tell me why !
Walker notes :
• So the male characters (Glenn, Daryl & Bob) are okay but the female ones are in danger (Beth, Maggie and Sasha).
• I really missed Rick, Michonne and Carol this week. I’m getting used to not seeing Carol but Michonne and Rick are great character it’s been too long without them.
• Bob keeps drinking. When he’s gonna meet Beth, those two are gonna get wasted !
• Daryl sleeping in a coffin… It’s bad luck, right ? Luckily, it’s Daryl and I don’t think the writers can kill him
