The Musketeers - Episode 1.07 - A Rebellious Woman - Preview & Teasers

One thing this show does very well is have strong women front and centre week after week, both main and guest female stars get their chance to shine in what you expect to be a very heavily male skewed narrative. This episode is no exception, in fact the main plot pushes the boundaries of female rights in the seventeenth century far more than any of the preceding ones have done. Although whenever challenging the stagnant thoughts of the mainstream populous there will always be consequences to pay and overcome, especially if the Cardinal has ulterior motives and with help of the Catholic church starts spreading propaganda around court.

I have a few nitpicks about this episode, see the last paragraph for my biggest bugbear, but overall it’s an enjoyable outing, and at least we have all the cast making an appearance which is something that hasn't happened for a month or so. Peter Capaldi's Cardinal has a chance to showcase his Machiavellian nature alongside guest star John Lynch’s Jesuit priest, we’re reminded of Athos and Milady’s past and hatred of each other, and likewise Anne and Aramis share a brief scene in case we've forgotten about their attraction. The plot has enough twist and turns to be entertaining, the dialogue is witty (Gage again in particular gives another fab performance with spot on delivery of Louis’ comic lines), and the settings are as gorgeous as ever, but none of this can help save what is what I feel a bit of a disappointing end to Ninon's story.

D'Artagnan and Constance shippers will be welcoming the last scene of this week’s instalment I'm sure, though personally I feel that this declaration of love has come about without much build up in recent episodes. I also would have preferred any affair to start after her husband has either been shown to treat Constance very badly or undertaken an evil deed, rather than just her not to be as enamoured with him as she could be, but then stay with him anyway and sleep with someone else while he is away on business. As a big fan of her character so far I don’t want her honour to be downplayed, they've spent time making sure that she’s as worthy of that accolade as the Musketeers themselves so I hope there will be a satisfying resolution to this plot.

A Rebellious Woman airs at 9pm on Sunday 9th March on BBC 1 and BBC 1 HD, below are a few dialogue teasers to see you through until then. Don't forget to come back to vote in our poll after the episode and let us know what you thought.

“The kingdom of heaven is a dream, our only life is here”

“We’ll add Satan to the list of suspects”

“Aren't you that Jesuit priest who wrote that terrible pamphlet!”

“This woman is a liar, she is not even who she claims to be!”

“I don’t hate Bonacieux, I'm only trying to be realistic”

“Four young women in their nightwear, we can only speculate as to the horrors they have endure”

“I was gagged the day I was born a woman”

“Your job is to find something I can use against her, these girls she encourages, is her interest in them healthy?”

“I have often seen you at court and thought how handsome you are, there’s a melancholy aspect to your looks that I find intriguing but it’s probably only mental vacancy”

“One day we’ll sit down and I’ll explain women to you”

Trailer Teaser

“30 livre, is that right?”

  1. Do the Cardinal and D'artagnan share any 'meaningful' scenes, by which I mean scenes that lead nicely into episode 8 and beyond? Milady made a point around episode 2 that she would try and get D'artagnan to be on her and the Cardinal's side.

As for D'artagnan and Constance, whilst I was never going to be surprised about passionate kisses being shared ( and I personally don't mind them giving in to their attraction via kisses ) I'll be surprised if they have a full blown affair, as like you say, her husband hasn't yet been cruel towards her and I'm not sure the producers would want to go there. Having said that, Dumas never intended any of the Musketeers to be whiter than white - I believe Porthas has an affair with a married woman in the book - so maybe an affair between D'artagnan and Constance would remind viewers that our heroes are human and imperfect. I certainly don't want any 'unresolved sexual tension' being dragged out between these two indefinitely.

  2. Thank you as always for your review and teasers. I am interested that you mention a reminder of Athos and Milady's hatred of each other. Although I definitely got this from Milady I felt Athos was portrayed as hating her in the past but maybe now was just broken by grief and guilt. I don't know if anyone else viewed it like that, and indeed I would much prefer more animosity between them, but I was intrigued by your comment. Does that mean we get a scene between them, or possible each of them discussing the other with another?

  3. WOW! Your preview is like music to my ears! As a huge D'Artagnan and Constance fan, I'm SO EXCITED about this episode. Thank you, Sandi, for all that info! As you know, I love them together a lot!

Question: Are you allowed to say if we will get a D'Artagnan/Constance passionate kiss or an amazing love scene or a verbal declaration of love? Anything of that sort??? And do they share a good amount of screen time and development in this episode? Any extra info would make me a million times happier!

    Thanks, you made my week!!!!

  4. Do Queen Anne and King Louis have any scenes together or with a crowd in this episode and what is queen anne reaction to Ninon?

    ReplyDelete
  5. does ninon shed some light on the king and queens marriage problems ? and
does the queen get on the cardinal bad side in this episode?

    ReplyDelete
  6. No, there's not really any focus on their marriage in this episode. Hmm, The King and Queen do disagree with the Cardinal about something.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Ninon is a friend of the King and Queen ? So her character is not inspired by Ninon de l'Enclos at all, is it ?

    ReplyDelete
  8. I think that parts of her are, I have to admit that I don't know a great deal about her but parts of what I read on Wikipedia do seem to have been familiar. Her determination to remain unmarried and independent, her house becoming a centre of discussion for women to educate themselves on the world and her opinions on religion, for example. But yes, her relationship with the royal family, especially Anne, is very different.

    ReplyDelete
  9. That's not a bad thing. Apparently the writers took the interesting parts of the historical figure's story, so I hope this make the whole plot interesting. I have another question if I may : Do we see a different side of the Queen this time as well ? In episode 6, she showed that she wasn't fooled by Marie de Medici's, unlike Louis, and she was (I thought) very protective of him, telling him how to act. Is another side of her personnality shown in episode 7 ? Maybe during her conversations with Ninon ?

    ReplyDelete
  10. In general we see her usual very caring side, but we do see maybe a hint of jealousy for a moment at one point, but she is straight forward and level headed in her dealing with it, as seems to be her way, and the matter is dealt with smoothly.

    ReplyDelete
  11. does the jealousy have anything to do with aramis ?

    ReplyDelete
  12. YES! Your reply is the BEST! Sandi, you're awesome! THANK YOU! Yes, I never use caps, but I'm using them now because this is very exciting!

Question: Are D'Artagnan/Constance in the trailer for episode 8? I know you can't say anything about the trailer. But I'm just curious if they are in the promo for episode 8...since I did see some very GOOD promo pix of them! :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. In the promo Ninon kissed Athos and then we see him begging for her life... Will we see a vulnerable loving Athos? Is the Athos/Ninon storyline any good? I saw in the promo pic Milady with Ninon, so will Milady fuck shit up between Ninon and Athos?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think the producers will visit the 'half-way house' when it comes to D'artagnan and Constance - allow them to let out their growing feelings via declarations and a kiss or two but stop short of having them become lovers, for fear of Constance ( and D'artagnan ) becoming less popular with viewers. It wouldn't be a huge issue for me but I suppose it would be for other viewers. An affair may occur in series 2 though, if the husband becomes more of a bully or even dies.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thank you, that sounds interesting. Further to achan8269's comment how is the interaction between Athos and Ninon played? The synopsis seems to suggest dislike, yet the preview appears to tell a different story. Is Milady something to do with that disparity?

    ReplyDelete
  16. is there any of the queen opinions that the king disagrees with or does he feel intimidated by her cleverness? and does this scene have anything to do with the carriage incident ?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hmm, I don't think he's particularly loving, but he does open up, their story kinda takes a back seat to the rest of the episode thou it does have an impact on that. Milady does meddle between them a little, but her real interests lie elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't think I've seen the synopsis that says they dislike each other, sorry, so I'm not sure about that one. I think they spark an interest in each other, and there is respect. Milady doesn't really have anything to do with their relationship though, she is up to other plots.

  19. There's a theory going on on tumblr : is it Aramis' rosary (the one given by the Queen) around Ninon's neck in the second photo ? It is like he's giving her something on the first one, so maybe the necklace, to appear more "religious" during her trial ? (Is there a trial at all ? lol I'm investigating here)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hmm, you know I'm no shipper, and as such my view does tend to vary, so you will probably see it very differently to me. But, no, I saw it as one declaring and the other being happy to be seen as loved and being caught up in the passion of the moment. BUT, I do think that the other person does have feelings though, it just didn't come across on screen for me at the time I'm afraid. But again, I also feel that being in love was a bit strong for this point in their relationship for the little romance that we have seen in their lives :( But, once again, I am not really into these plot lines, sorry hun, I don't want to put a downer on as I know this is an exciting time for shippers, but I still write as I see it when asked.

As for the trailer, I don't recall seeing anything shippy but will check when I rewatch tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Nope, they are pretty much in agreement on everything this week. I can't recall that scene, thou I can make a guess from what the Cardinal is wearing, but it's not to do with the carriage as that is before the opening credits in Paris. This looks to be at the monastery, where the second half the episode takes place.

    ReplyDelete
  22. This photo? It's not for her to appear religious. I don't want to say too much about it, but it is sweet.

  23. We can't see the photo on your link, or maybe just me. Anyway, if you don't want to give too much away, I understand that perfectly :) I try to ask you cryptical questions so I don't spoil myself too much. (I know it is ridiculous when I check spoilertv.com everyday, but I also don't want to spoil my own pleasure of dicovering the episodes every week)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ahh, sorry, I edited and deleted that part of my post. The photos didn't show up in your post for me at first, so when they did, i edited mine out, sorry to confuse XD

Cheers for being understanding, I can't really say too much about the necklace without just plain out just saying, which I don't think the BBC would like, lol. It is a nice little side thing, nothing really important or big at all. It's minutes, if that, in the story. Something Aramis fans will prob like thou.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Your answers always give us that little something perfect to wait until Sunday, but without spoiling the whole plot. That's exactly what I'm looking for when I read your posts : a foretaste, because I am not that patient lol but with an intact surprise.

    ReplyDelete
  26. If it's D'artagnan who declares his love, I'll be more surprised than if it's Constance and I say this as another D'artagnan / Constance fan.

Whilst D'artagnan has come across as liking Constance very much - and naturally, he wants to protect her as his friend - I've yet to see any real sign of attraction on his side. Constance I can buy declaring her love a bit more, if only because her attraction to him has been 'fairly' obvious since episode 1 - within hours of meeting D'artagnan, she's concerned about what he's getting up to and she slapped Aramis ( twice ) because of her worry over him and appeared to flinch when he put his hands around her waist during gun training - in a scene that totally reminded me of Jack and Gwen's gun training scene in Torchwood. If D'artagnan isn't yet there with his feelings, I won't be surprised but if it's him who declares his love first, you're right that there hasn't been any real build up.

I forgot to say earlier, I love Ryan Gage as King Louis and I'm glad he's getting a bit more screen time in these later episodes. I love the whole cast anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Last tease, the why she has it isn't really too important, the fact she does is, story wise ;)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Gage has been great these last couple of episodes I think, really settled into the role and seems to be having a lot of fun with it. His immaturity is also apparent in this episode, but in a very different way, it's more innocent and comic rather than childish.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Is that where the jealousy comes in for the queen?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think either one is an option (for possible plots moving forward not based on the past build up), but I bet it's Constance. D'Artagnan has not come full circle with the Milady situation. That plot is still out there waiting to be tied up. But this could lead to it in a way. The promo pics for episode 8 are a bit confusing as one looks like he is giving Constance money - paying up and leaving?? It's possible that this could all build up to a season finale where he realizes his feelings after Milady is shown in her true light. Also gives times to make Constance look sympathetic in this situation as she was rejected after putting herself in a compromising position. I guess we will find out on Sunday! Can't wait.

    ReplyDelete
  31. does this episode gives an in sight of the king and queens opinions of religion and do they defend their friend Ninon ?

    ReplyDelete
  32. You're right about the D'artagnan / Milady situation being unfinished, which is another reason why I think it's Constance who's the first to declare any feelings. Any big declaration of love from D'artagnan could be being saved for the series final.

Either way, we'll know in another few days and we could be completely wrong......................

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm with you. I feel like being "in love" is a bit strong at this point. There are so many other things they need to develop further (imo). And I don't know why, but I'm a little worried about how they're going to put this into motion. If not done well, I feel like an affair like this just kills the characters and sometimes the plot direction. I just don't want that.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I also think it will be Constance declaring her love to D'Artagnan. She seems to be more aware of her love for him. I do, however, disagree when you mentioned that you don't see attraction from D'Artagnan's side. I mean, he was staring at her breasts in the first episode. She had to remind him to look away. Not to mention that he DEFINITELY hoped for a kiss and much more when Constance asked him to teach her how to shoot instead. D'Artagnan is definitely attracted to her and adores her. I just think he will be SLOWER when it comes to realizing that he loves her. In The Musketeers DVD season 1 description, it basically says that Constance's life will be in danger. I think that's when D'Artagnan will fully realize that he loves her. So that will happen in episode 10. I think the writers are putting his realization for later on. Hopefully, we will save her life!

I think they've both spent plenty of time together to get to know each other and fall in love, in my humble opinion. I mean, he taught her how to sword fight AND how to shoot. They've also participated in many Musketeers plans together. They've talked about trust/loyalty to each other. So they have opened up to one another. He protected her from the guy to tried to force himself on her. She killed a man to save him. She also protected him many times.

I just think with D'Artagnan, he is the type of character who "gets" things later than other people. While, Constance is more in tune with how she feels. She knows what's happening. I think it will be interesting to see D'Artagnan realize that he loves her. It will probably surprise him. :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes. Agreed. While D'Artagnan has come across as protective of Constance, I haven't felt a lot of the attraction from his side. Even in the "teaching her to shoot" scene, she seemed into it, and into him, and he just seemed kind of... bored isn't the right word, but... not-invested, maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks, Sandi, for all the info!

That promo photo of D'Artagnan/Constance almost kissing is from episode 8, right? They didn't make a mistake with the episode number? Or is it from episode 7?

    ReplyDelete
  37. You're welcome :) Nope, it's not from episode 7.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm a fan too! Haha.
Well, the descriptions can be deceiving at least for this season. Constance is his true love in the book so that may be why they define her that way. We may or may not see an actual relationship form til a later season. Not only is Milady around, but we still have the husband! I think the writers are going to be creating drama rather than a relationship at this point. D'Artagnan is romantic...and honorable. I don't see him giving up on the mystery/appeal with Milady anytime soon - especially since there are pics of them together in upcoming episodes. I also could see him regretting betraying Constance's marriage after becoming involved with her. If Constance does become endangered in the last few episodes, it would have an even more dramatic conclusion if she found out about d'Artagnan and Milady. Would also add guilt to d'Artagnan as well...maybe could be used to further character development.

As long as Constance doesn't die like she does in the book, I'm happy...please don't die, Constance.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Just rewatched the trailer, Constance isn't in it I'm afraid :(

    ReplyDelete
  40. D'Artagnan and the Cardinal do seem to have scene/s in ep 8 going by what we see in the trailer at the end of this episode, just had another look at it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. While I would never call a man staring at a woman's breasts a precursor to true love (especially when he seemed to think she was a prostitute at the time), I do buy the chemistry between them once in a while. Though, I'll agree with some others that it's been very reserved on d'Artagnan's side, from my pov.

The thing is the other situations they've been in where each has come to the rescue of the other, they've been things that any of the other musketeers would have done in the same situation, without romantic feelings being involved.

I think before this can feel more real to me, I need a little more screen time between Constance and d'Artagnan. A little more character development and motivation for d'Artagnan. And some resolution for the Milady direction of his interests.

Luckily, it looks like we may get more of that leading up to the finale. That they do it well, and do it right, without diminishing the characters' awesomeness to make it happen, is my hope.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'd probably say reserved.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Sandi, thank you for checking!!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I dunno, I think I would have like a few dates, proper dates, like picnics or something, not seeing them all as such but knowing they happened, before love 'hits' them. I would have bought it more then I think.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't know about dates or picnics (because that just feels a little weird to me that they would be going on a picnic or a date together) but bonding over and spending time together over more than just adrenaline inducing situations - yes.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm going to speculate that this line - “I have often seen you at court and thought how handsome you are, there’s a melancholy aspect to your looks that I find intriguing but it’s probably only mental vacancy” - is said by Ninon to Athos.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I rewatched today so made sure I double checked this this for you, and there are a couple of scenes where D'Artagnan and the Cardinal are in the same place at the same time, but they don't really communicate with each other in them I'm afraid.

    ReplyDelete
  48. After the discussion over in the ep 10 photo thread, I've been wondering this evening if maybe the love story between them has been pushed forward due to Capaldi leaving?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hmm, could be. I'm really curious how they are going to handle his departure. Will be interesting to see.

I'm also beginning to wonder if we will see more of Constance's husband in these last few. There is a rather menacing picture of him in the episode 8 promo photos. I find this odd since he has had pretty much no screen time. It's also included with the picture of d'Artagnan handing Constance money...(?). I wonder if he throws d'Artagnan out. Could create some drama. Maybe he becomes a baddie...filled with envy after Milady tells him about Constance's betrayal. I find it interesting that she stopped by to see him in episode three...and it never amounted to anything. Maybe it is all foreshadowing.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I mentioned earlier this evening in the ep 10 photos thread that although we feel like we have been spoiled quite a bit with these last lot of photos there seems to be nothing on his departure at all in the last two episodes. I really want to know more *stomps foot* lol.

Not seeing Bonacieux much this season is odd too, which again makes me think they may have pushed this plot forward a bit before they originally planned. I'm not sure that he's giving that pouch of money to Constance, but maybe they're discussing where it's come from, which we see in the trailer tomorrow, it's tied to the trailer teaser above and is given to him by someone else. The 30 'pieces' of livre is possibly significant to D'Artagnan's future story though, I think ;)

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm wondering if they'll bring in Rochefort who could act a little as a more direct antagonist in season 2, and maybe they'll pull back on the focus on the cardinal at all.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Now that would be cool, and it would also perhaps beef up the D'Artagnan character next season too a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I like the way you think ;) If only Pertwee had a scar in those photos. ho hum :(

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yep, they have maybe 3-4 scenes (sorry, it's not easy to check the episode this week to be sure) together with others too, then Anne has two scenes without Louis, but I don't think they have any alone. I will double check later on in the week when I watch it again.

Ninon is a friend of the King and Queen, so they get on fairly well.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Ha, I thought you might like this news ;) They do share a couple of scenes, but nothing shippery until this last scene really. Yes, love is declared by one of them and yes there is plenty of passion. Prob shouldn't say any more than that, I think you will love it though, tumblr is gonna go GIF CRAZY!! lol.

    ReplyDelete
  56. There's no scene that is just between them as such, but they are both part of a bigger scene in which he gets very angry towards her in, Ninon plays a part in why that anger has resurfaced.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hmm, I don't recall D'Artagnan and the Cardinal meeting at all, for reasons too long to explain it's not very easy to check the episode thou so I'm having to rely on my (bad) memory alone this week so I apologise if I am wrong, lol. Definitely nothing that leads onto episode 8 for them though I'm afraid.

Yeah, the opposite end of having them jump in to it now is having it drag out, of the two I guess I prefer this, lol.
