The Mentalist - Episode 6.16 - Violets - Review

NOTE: Please be advised that English is not my first language.

This season The Mentalist is giving us a lot of subtexts. Since last night's episode was full of them, I decided to separate them. First of all, the case: a man was shot and robbed by an art squad of thieves. Jane was immediately intrigued by those masked men who irrupted into John Hannigan's musuem and stole the painting - including a secret paiting where his wife was portrayed. Jane's already planned an undercover mission just as Marcus Pike, the new agent, finishes to explain the case. That doesn't impress Cho much, knowing Jane as a showman "My plan is a little more eleborate, but it's much more entertaining." "Of course it is."
I enjoyed how much Jane knows his team, most because he gave Wiley a little credit, including him in the mission; he's like his protegé, as showed in the previous episode. Wiley is like Grace Van Pelt at the very beginning.

Jane's play and everyone's roles. "Life's a show and we all play a part." From this quote taken from Buffy TVS, Jane, in his way, organizes a little play\undercover. He gives Abbott the role of a tough robber who gets to know MacKaye in the bar and gains his trust; Cho is the key man who breaks into Abbott and MacKaye, causing them to show up in another place to have some drinks - Jane and Lisbon's undercover house. Fischer is the 'face' of the plan: I laughed so much when she took the leopard-skin dress off the bag... Does Jane think that's the real Kim Fischer? Or maybe did he want to give her the fun she may have missed? So like a wizard, Jane turns Fischer into a hot Cinderella ready to seduce the thief. Lisbon, of course, plays Jane's husband\girlfriend. Easy to think that, because Jane just wants to be with her, and we know his inconscious too. Even if it's for an undercover mission, why don't try and spend some time with the woman he loves? As for Lisbon, she enjoyed her role, even tho we know Lisbon isn't that type of girl who wears tight dresses and heels... She's not even the kind of girl who flirts with everyone, so I was impressed from the moment she saw Pike at the FBI, she couldn't keep her eyes off of him. Later, at the FBI secret museum of stolen arts, she was flirting with him! Pike is just like we all imagined: smart, well looking guy, he's not bad and he knows how to get something he wants. Lisbon's feelings for Jane are a little bit complicated. She cares for Jane when she sees he's sleeping in the couch and covers him with a blanket. She stares at him, maybe thinking how does it feel to be a real couple? On the other hand, Lisbon's interest for Pike is truly genuine.

Jane's past and present love life. Jane is particulary interested in the case because of that violet's painting by Manet. He explains to the thief that the artist couldn't express in words his forbidden love for the woman he had fallen, so he did in a different way. Anyone looked at that Manet's paiting? There's a bunch of violets, a fan and a letter - anyone remembers the letters-exchanging-in-a-romantic-way between Jane and Lisbon? The victim's wife is mourning her husband, but Jane knows well how does it feel. He explains to her he's not gone forever until he rests in your heart. His wife is always a persistent presence in his life, and so Lisbon does. While now Jane can talk at open mind about mourning, he can't openly talk about his feeling for the other woman in his life. He made Lisbon to be his wife in his undercover plan, but he can't keep his eyes off of her - and even the thieves realize there's much more going on between those two. He knows he wants Lisbon, but he can't make that step ahead. When he sees Pike and Lisbon going out for a date, that's the moment when the show (or the play) ends: he comes back to reality, he sits in the couch and takes his scarf off and realizes he's a lonely man - he'll always thinks about his wife, he's ready to move on, but maybe it's too late. In other words, when you love someone, you want her to be happy... not necessary with you. I also hope Jane won't give up so early to the woman he loves: we all want Jane to fight for Lisbon's heart once for all.

Marcus Pike. I understand Lisbon's crush for this agent: he has something Jane doesn't: he won't run away. Once Pike's found what he wants (Lisbon), he goes for her. But first, he acts like a gentlemen: he asks Wiley if there's something between Jane and Lisbon - that's funny because even the nerd guy thought Jane and Lisbon were a couple! - then he makes his move. With not mince words, Pike asks her out complimenting her; Lisbon is flattered, I mean... how long didn't she date someone? Pike is direct, he doesn't use subtexts or plans like Jane. Lisbon thinks: he's a man he knows what he wants; Jane acts like a child and runs away when things get complicated. Her mind may thinks Pike's the perfect match, but what does her heart want? I guess for the moment, she needs to think about herself and what does it mean to be far from Jane. When Lisbon will realize who she is without him, that's the moment when she'll realize what her heart wants and always wanted - Jane.

What do you think about Marcus Pike? How will Jane deal with Pike and Lisbon's relationship? Share your comments below.

  1. well pike is okay but in my personal opinion he isnt handsome, he's average (the boxer's nose ...) anyway I think that its a nice turn to see jane - hopefully - fight for lisbon. give her some time to realise what she wants in life because up to this season her life was always second to the job. now she has the possibility to get herself maybe the family she deserves etc etc.
but first of all jane needs to realise that he is about to loose her and fight. fight. fight.
i am really looking forward to lisbons reactions towards jane when he starts "the fight" because we may see a side of jane not even she knows yet.
    - at least I hope they will give us something!

  3. Nice review...And I think we all know where we are going with Jisbon from now on...so many hints in the last 2 episodes...they can´t fool with us like that and don´t make it happen in the end!!!

  4. I'm still a little afraid they leave the jisbon storyline open at the end of this season and then if the show doesn't come back next season they will have missed their chance!

  5. Pike doesn't stand a chance. He has nothing he isn't good looking or smart. Is Lisbon so starved for affection that she is going to go out with him or is she trying to wake up Jane. Great episode. I loved the con.

  10. I'm sure the writers have all the story in their mind and we're going in the right way. We need to see things shaken up between J and L. Thanks anyway!

  11. Don't worry, Bruno will give us a perfect closure. Thanks for reading!

  12. Thanks :) I think Pike is just the final step that will bring Jane and Lisbon together. We're getting closer ;)

  13. Surely she feels something for him, but now lisbon is afraid of him leaving her again. I think what she wants is safety and Pike seems to fit with that... for now.

  14. Thanks for reading! Yes Lisbon was cute in both dresses :)

  17. it seem strange that Abbott is going with Jane plan.......I guess Abbott trust Jane to get the job done, or he as the boss wouldn't have let Jane did what he did

  18. Great Review. I loved this episode. There was so much to it. It was fun, exciting, sad and emotional. Jordan Harper did a great job writing the episode. The cast were spot on and Jane's plan as always hit the bullseye. Jane does things in style and he can run rings around most people, only when it comes to his heart's desire is he stuck in the mire. So clever and yet so dumm. Mind you, I wouldn't have him any other way. Love the character and Simon Baker is an exceptionally talented actor. They whole cast and crew are amazing. The writing is top-notch. We need more.

PLEASE RENEW THE MENTALIST FOR SEASON 7!!!

  20. Robin knows how to kill everyone with that dress lol

  21. I forgot to write more about Abbott... he learns how to deal with Jane because the only way to solve the cases is letting him do what he wants to. I guess he really enjoyed being part of his plan.

  22. Thanks for commenting :) I agree. Jane may be the king of mind games, but when it comes to his feelings, he doesn't have a plan to solve them.

  23. here a interesting theory......what if Pike is just pretending to like Lisbon to keep an eye on her and Jane....they have not conclude that mystery encrypted list from the Red Jane episode. He could be just a spy for that XX person

  24. I think Pike is just a straight shooting guy and that's what's made an impression on Lisbon. She did say to him, the whole day playing a role had been a lie. When Pike complimented her on how well she played her part, Lisbon said she had learnt from the best. Jane is so much fun, even with his tragic past, he is light on his feet, keeps an open mind and can think outside of the box if he needs to, to get the job done. As he said in Violets, he rarely fails and I believe it's because he is so mercurial and people-smart. One of the bones of contention between Jane and Lisbon is that he won't tell her about his plan in advance. He always seems to leave her in the dark until the take-down. And whenever it suits Jane and the occasion, he will lie, it comes easily to him. Lisbon is wary of this, it seems to undermine her ability to trust him. By lying to her, however well-intentioned, it's difficult for Lisbon to believe anything he says. However, having said that, Jane has always been there when Lisbon has been in danger or in trouble. Actions speak louder than words. But Jane is way to subtle in telling Lisbon how he feels in ways that she isn't comprehending, because she believes it's all part of the con.

  25. Thanks a lot for such a Jisbon review.
I liked that the first Lisbon reaction to a Pike offer was refusal. I believe that subconsciously she decided to wait for Jane no matter what and be there for him. Pike seemed to me too simple for Lisbon. But I'm expecting a lot of fun and jealousy form Jane :)

  26. Did the mistery already close when Haibach got killed? that was part of the old CBI team, now it's done.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The problem with Jane is his way of running away from her. Lisbon has afraid since then. Pike, on the contrary, is a safe anchor for her and he's her perfect match, that's why lisbon relies on him; but I'm sure as soon as she will realize she doesn't want perfection Lisbon will understand she only wants Jane.

  28. Pike seems to be the perfect guy :) as I wrote before, Lisbon will soon realize she doesn't want that perfection, because she wants Jane in all his best and wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't think so it a separate storyline

    ReplyDelete
  30. Haibach was behind the murder of the former CBI agents. I don't know which list are you referring.

    ReplyDelete
  31. the list found on gale bertram computer that JAne use to convince Abbott

    ReplyDelete
  32. I thought about that too, but would be a little disappointed. Implies no one is interested in her except as a way to monitor her and Jane. They did that twice with Van Pelt; love interests that turned out to be faking it to get close to Jane.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't think that'd be an intersting plot... Speaking in ratings, I think now people want to watch the single murder case without any other creepy plotlines. Now the attention is focused on Jane\Lisbon dynamic.

  34. Great review. I really enjoyed your take on things. Good point with Wiley the protege! I hasn't thought of that. I loved the symbolism with him taking off the scarf: giving up that fake life with Lisbon. (or just fake life of happiness with a person if we don't want to take a shipper POV)

I like PIke. You're right. Finding out whether she and Jane have a thing was really the gentlemanly thing to do.
