Teen Wolf - Season 3 - Crystal Reed interview

Mar 18, 2014

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Why?!?! Wait, let me start over. Deciding to leave the show was obviously a tough call to make. Tell me how you decided it was time.

CRYSTAL REED: I love the art. And I felt like, creatively, there were things I wanted to do differently, and I wanted to explore other avenues of film and TV. I wanted to jump into different characters. You know, I’m 29. So I think the age difference was something I wanted to change as well because she’s 17. I love the show so much. So I went to Jeff and talked about it and he said, “We’ll write you a great ending.”

When was this conversation?

We were a couple of episodes into [season 3], and I spoke with my team and expressed that I wanted to do different things and explore different avenues and tell different stories. And they were completely supportive of me and said I should talk to [creator] Jeff [Davis]. It was such a nerve-wrackng day but he’s such a great guy and person. It’s not always that people will always let you leave the show. So I’m really, really grateful for that.

  1. I was shocked she was killed off. I didn't expect that. I always kind of thought Scott and Allison would be endgame for the end of the series.

  2. I was shocked she was killed off. Didn't expect it at all. I always kind of thought Scott and Allison were going to be endgame for the end of the series. I thought it was going to be Issac who died.

  3. Unbelievably sad that Allison died but that was a beautiful, heroic ending.

  4. What just happened? what did they just kill Allison for real? I am glad that was a mutual decision on Crystals part and that Jeff supported her but oh my god they killed Allison off though. I feel so bad for Chris Argent, Lydia and all her friends. First Chris lost his wife, his sister(or his wives sister I can't remember who she was a sister to) and now his daughter. Are they trying to make Chris Argent the human version of Derek: An angsty lone wolf type who just loses his family all his life.

  5. Allisons death was pointless and just for shock value. Her final season and she gets 5 min of screentime and her only storyline is with useless Isaac?

  6. I just can't believe it right now!!!!

  7. WOWOWOWOWOWOWOW no words for this episode, can't wait for the finale. Good Luck to Crystal in her future, but with she would've stayed so Allison could've ended up with Scott!

  8. I must admit that I wasn't expecting that, but if I'm perfectly honest I haven't liked her character for a while now. I hope this opens up the door for Arden Cho. I've enjoyed Scott and Kira infinitely more than Scott and Allison.

  9. I agree. As sad I as I still am to see Allison leave because she was our first connection to Lydia and to Chris Argent and the hunter side I also think its sad for the group that they lost their friend and Chris lost his only daughter.I hope Kira gets a feature lead female role next season. She is cute and bad ass at the same time and has lots of skills and talents to bring to the group. Plus her and Scott together are so much cuter and less angst ridden like Scott and Allison were at times.

  10. I just finished the episode and I did not expect it to effect me so much. When I first heard a main character would die, Allison was at the top of my list as far as the top-billed cast was concerned. Crystal is 29 playing a much younger character (even if she was doing it beautifully) for one point. Kira has really been doing well as both Scott's love interest and the badass female of the series (that girl can use a katana). I also knew that Allison dying would effect me the least so in a way I was hoping for this death.

That being said, i cried, dear God did I cry. You don't realize how much a character means to you until they are gone. She's never been my favorite (that switches between Stiles and Lydia every couple episodes) but she's always been a character I enjoyed and felt broke the mold of a typical teenage girl portrayed in television. I will miss her presence in the show, but I understand that she had to go. So good luck to Crystal in her future endeavors and Rest in Peace Allison. We'll miss you.

  11. I don't really have a problem with them killing Allison off the show her character was getting a little boring and better her than Scott or Stiles.

  12. There hasnt been any reports of Daniel leaving the show. He said in an interview he was looking forward to the next season.

  13. I think she killed a oni with her arrow so it won't be pointless

  14. I was told he got a new role somewhere and he was toast this season. I hope you're right. I don't want him gone.

  15. I know people are saying Allison's death was handled well, but I really can't agree. It was too quick, a lot of her plot like this scene was centered around Isaac, and Allison, a 17 year old her, spent her final breaths talking about it being perfect to die in her first love's arms. I feel there was absolutely no reason for Allison to die; her death feels forced, for "dramatic effect".
That and they not only killed a major character, who we've known from the very first episode, but they also killed one of only two main female characters.

I'm not happy with Allison's death, and if someone really, truly had to die, they could have killed Aiden, giving him some redemption in the process. Or they could have done it with Ethan, and had Danny finally find out about the supernatural aspect of Beacon Hills in the process.

  16. So much for Allison and Scott EndGame, for those who still believed it. I lost faith on that a long time ago, but I still liked her; so it was still sad to see her go. I didn't expect it to be her who dies. I guess the “We’ll write you a great ending.” was that last moment with Scott who at one point knew her the most.

  17. Where did you read/get told that?

  18. I think it was on the IMDB boards awhile back. Sounded legit. I think someone else told me, too. They said he was leaving the show, that's why I was surprised it wasn't him.

  21. Sounds like a good sign then. I like him.

  22. Question is what will he do next season?

  23. I agree to the creative point that, if it was my decision, I would not kill Allison. But Crystal wanted to leave and there was no running back from this, so they had to make the best out of it. Considering Crystal's interview, they were already shooting S3 when she made the decision and I'm pretty sure the writers had already stablished her story with Isaac. Besides, they needed a new female in her place and had to introduce Kira (who, IMO, is doing a good job). In other words, they couldn't turn Allison very out of track from what was already set out for her from the beginning.

Her dying in Scott's arms was the representation of what should have been. They were obviously end game, but since Allison wouldn't be part of that end anyway, they gave both of them the closest thing possible: her saying she loved him once last time. It turns out as very cliché and all, but I think it was a decent way of showing their (the writers) true intentions.

  24. I really thought, or hoped at least that they would have gone somewhere with the after affects of Allisons sacrifice for her dad last season (similar to Stiles and Scott's) but nope apparently the writers completely forgot about the references they made to it this season. Besides seeing her aunt Kate, she slept through all the phone calls while searching for Stiles(which Allison said she never does) and the money to incriminate her dad as mysteriously planted in her home by Stiles supposedly. I could have sworn the writers would somehow write into the show that Allison was also doing some nogitsune deeds too since they did reference her being out of it a bit. But no she just died by a sword and that's it. The end. I like this show a lot but sometimes it dumbfounds me how they just seem to skip over good potential stories and twists that they themselves reference. It's like they start writing drop hints and a few episodes later are just like screw it lets just not ever go back to that point any more maybe the audience will forget everything.

She was barely in this season and when she was she was either boring or being a bit off and now she just dies of a random stab wound. Way to really use her potential there Jeff, NOT. I actually feel bad for Crystal because even though it was her choice to leave and they supported her they really gave her no good material this season because of it. I actually don't mind the actress but her bad ass hunter character become about as entertaining as watching paint dry.

  25. Allison was a good character but Crystal wanted to leave so I don't understand why this whole drama talking shit about other characters who should have died instead of her. It was Crystal's choice, end of the story. You'll probably see her again in other show or movie.

  26. I'm surprised that she wanted to be out. Good luck to her!
And I'm glad to know the truth. I hate when we never know if it's the writer or the actor who makes the decision.
