NBC 5.8/ 9
ABC 2.6/ 4
Fox 2.1/ 3
CW 1.4/ 2
-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Tuesday 3/05/13:
NBC: +152, CW: +55, CBS: – 6, ABC: -24, Fox: -73
———-
-Winners:
“NCIS” (CBS), “The Voice” (NBC), “NICS: Los Angeles” (CBS), “Person of Interest” (CBS)
-Honorable Mention:
“About a Boy” (NBC), “Chicago Fire” (NBC)
-Disappointing:
“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (ABC)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Glee” (Fox), “The Goldbergs” (ABC), “New Girl” (Fox), “Trophy Wife” (ABC), “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (Fox), “Mind Games” (ABC)
———-
-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a clean Tuesday overnight household sweep for CBS, which finished first in each of the six half hours care of “NCIS” (#1 for the evening: 11.1 rating/17 share), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (9.0/14) and “Person of Interest” (7.2/12). But “The Voice” on NBC, which scored a second-place 8.7/13 from 8-9 p.m., is a lock to lead the evening in adults 18-49 (and other key young adult demographics).
In episode two news (last week were encores of the pilots), NBC comedies “About a Boy” (5.1/ 8) and “Growing Up Fisher” (4.1/ 6) finished second behind “NCIS: Los Angeles” in the 9 p.m. hour. Comparably, “About a Boy” built from failed year-ago time period occupant “Go On” with Matthew Perry (2.3/ 4 on 3/05/13 out of a 2.3/ 4 for “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers”) by 122 percent, with 57 percent retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “The Voice” (9.0/14). And “Growing Up Fisher” increased from short-lived year-ago occupant “The New Normal” (1.9/ 3 on 3/05/13) by 116 percent. Stay tuned for the demo results, which could be a close call for time period dominance opposite “NCIS: Los Angeles.”
NBC closed the night with sophomore “Chicago Fire” at a second-place 4.2/ 7 at 10 p.m., which was 68 percent above failed year-ago occupant “Smash” (2.5/ 4 on 3/05/13).
In week two news, ABC drama “Mind Games” slipped to a very last-place 1.8/ 3 in the overnights at 10 p.m., which was down by 33 percent from its anemic opener (2.7/ 5 on Feb. 25). One year earlier, former time period occupant “Body of Proof” scored a 4.6/ 8. Chalk up another failure for Christian Slater. Note to ABC: Not every older-skewing entry is worth prematurely cancelling.
Earlier in the evening on ABC was “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” at a below average 3.5/ 5 (#3) at 8 p.m., which was only a slight improvement from the 3.3/ 5 for year-ago time period occupant “Celebrity Wife Swap.” And lead-out 9-10 p.m. sitcoms “The Goldbergs” (#3: 2.9/ 4) and “Trophy Wife” (#3: 2.1/ 3) trailed aforementioned “About a Boy” and “Growing Up Fisher” on NBC by an average of 46 percent.
Elsewhere, Fox could not compete with its revamped combination of “Glee” (#4: 2.1/ 3), “New Girl” (#4: 2.1/ 3) and critical darling “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (#4: 2.0/ 5), which like “Arrested Development” before it will never attract a mass audience. And The CW scored an identical 1.4/ 2 in the overnights each for already renewed dramas “The Originals” and “Supernatural” from 8-10 p.m.
In late night, the gap of leadership was narrowed in the 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. hour. “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” dipped to a series low 3.5/ 9 in the overnights, which was 12 percent below the 4.0/10 for Jay Leno on the year-ago evening. Second was “The Late Show with David Letterman” on CBS at a 2.3/ 6 (equal to one year earlier), followed by “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on ABC at a 1.7/ 3 (also equal).
The second Tuesday of “Late Night with Seth Meyers” won the 12:30-1:30 a.m. block, with a 1.7/ 6. But that was 23 percent below the 2.2/ 8 on the week-ago evening. Yes, NBC is now settling in. “Nightline” on ABC and “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” each scored a 1.1/ 4. Carson Daly capped off the night for NBC with a 1.0/ 4 in the 1:30 a.m. half-hour.

More people need to start watching B99 its an amazing show!!
ReplyDeleteIs that a little lower than usual for the CW shows?
ReplyDeleteNo, not really. I think TO and SPN are almost always a 1.4/2 or 1.5/2. And like the last couple of weeks, the shows were preempted in some areas.
ReplyDeleteWhere were they preempted this week?
ReplyDeleteI know last week TO has a 1.4 and then the demo ended up being .8 (I think it was .8). I wonder if that will happen again and SPN will get a .9 or .8.
The Body of Proof fans will be happy with your column.
ReplyDeleteI guess the NBC sitcoms are actually working out for once...of course it's just the first week (of new episodes).
Looks like the luster is fading for Jimmy Fallon.
what is going on with CW?? 1.4 it's low for TO and SPN, and this is the second week in a row
ReplyDeleteWho the hell runs programming over at ABC, And did they get their diploma out of a cracker jack box?
ReplyDeleteSPN was getting 1.3 couple of times this season and still 1.0 demo. TO almost always getting higher overnights , but lower demo somehow. So I would worry about TO, not SPN.
ReplyDeleteThanks. You know how this stuff works! I wish I did. I guess we'll see what comes out in a few hours. I was looking through past ratings this season and it ends up being a crapshoot.
ReplyDeleteApparently there were more preemptions this week.
ReplyDeleteI'm So Glad CF doing well :)
ReplyDeleteI'm going to wait to the A18-49 ratings, but it seems great for both NBC comedies.
ReplyDeleteChicago Fire grew out of Fisher, but it skews older.
CBS steady as usual and FOX is a mess.
POI was really doing great last night~
ReplyDeleteB99 is my comedy bias this year, please please renew it soon
I wouldnt even worry about TO given that its up against The Voice so a slight drop is to be expected.
ReplyDeleteAs always, I'll wait for the final demo numbers in regards to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D which will still see a second season! POI has been INCREDIBLY STEADY this season in the supposed 'CBS 10:00 P.M. Death Slot' surprised they haven't renewed their entire Tuesday night lineup!
ReplyDeleteThey haven't renewed a single scripted show until now, it is just a question of time (last year they announced almost all renewals by late march).
ReplyDeleteI am really worried about AoS, those HH numbers do not look good. I'll wait for the 18-49, but it looks like >2.0 to me.
ReplyDeleteWe have to wait for the demo numbers to judge especially in the CW's case but it's very likely that The Originals is being hurt by The Voice, as both are heavily female skewing shows so you would think there is an overlap.
ReplyDeleteWhoa at mind games.
ReplyDeleteIs PLL still on too?
ReplyDelete0.6 for Mind Games, ABC may want this season over by now.
ReplyDeleteHow long until they announce its replacement for Shark Tank repeats?
ABC will probably announce tomorrow that Mind Games is pulled from the schedule. It's doing even worse than Lucky 7 and Killer Women.
ReplyDeleteOutside of name-dropping, AoS has very little connection to the Marvel-verse. Although "not all heroes are super" Its a hell of a lot more fun when they are. If your going to have new and normal characters, then they have to be great. This cast isn't. The fact that fans are always asking for cameos by Marvel characters, shows that these cant carry the series. Looking forward to Lady Sif next week. (see what I mean)
ReplyDeleteLOL. ABC stupidly got rid of BOP, which: 1) was a procedural that ABC desperately needs; 2) had a tax break; 3) international sales, etc. Seriously, what were they thinking? Even a 13-episode order to serve as a benchwarmer would've made sense.
ReplyDeleteaweful night for abc. hope AoS rebound next week
ReplyDeleteWhy is checking ratings so ridiculously addictive !?
ReplyDeleteI know right?! :)
ReplyDeleteWait what? About A Boy > NCIS?
ReplyDeleteit will. Lady Sif is on next week.

It looks like a lot of shows were down last night, others were up or even.
ReplyDeleteYep, It does have a huge lead in :)
ReplyDeleteOuch at NCIS! Stupid Voice!
ReplyDeleteI guess The Voice as a lead in does work wonders indeed.
ReplyDeleteOuch, only NBC had a good night.
ReplyDeleteGreat for About a Boy,
Bad for Cw again
ReplyDeleteOuch, bad night all around sans The Voice!
ReplyDeletePLL is on for another 2 weeks.
ReplyDeleteIf I were ABC, I would change the schedule by doing this:
ReplyDeleteTuesdays
8pm Agents of SHIELD
9pm Add DWTS results show
10pm Trophy Wife
10:30pm Mixology
Wednesdays
8pm The Middle
8:30pm Suburgatory
9pm Modern Family
9:30pm The Goldbergs
10pm Nashville
What do you all think?
10 pm comedies do not work on network TV. It's been tried many times. ABC should consider moving the comedies to Friday night and ST to Tuesday night at 10 p.m. Agreed with DWTS results - considering it's cheap and it won't go up against TV - that is a good move.
ReplyDeletedwts results show will most likely come back next year
ReplyDelete8-Sheild
9-9:30- DWTS Results
9:30- New Comedy
10- Drama (Revenge?)
I believe there is no network that airs comedies at 10 pm and 10:30 pm.
ReplyDeleteNBC had an incredible night from 8 to 11pm and elsewhere The Goldbergs also did very well. Major ouch for everything else, I did not expect to see NCIS hitting these numbers even before Spring. This is the first time since it premiered that I actually think Agents of Shield did badly. It tied ABC's drama recent average, which is 1.7, and that is poor for a freshman. The show will still be renewed and I want to believe this was an isolated result and that competition will get easier (despite the arrival of DST) but yes, it had an awful result last night. I think the 8pm hour is just too competitive at the moment (which is why ABC should counterprogram with comedies and swap them with Shield, as I have been saying since October, but well).
ReplyDeleteAgents of Shield got hit hard! Things are looking pretty bleak
ReplyDeleteNew Girl is slowly recovering and thankfully B99 is steady and not dropping. Glee is embarrasing, and to think that 2 years ago, in that same timeslot, it used to score 3s and high 2s
My bad.
ReplyDeleteSorry about that.
ReplyDeleteGood for you SPN beating two ABC shows and the younger TO. Even with such pitiful writing the Winchesters still hold their own; just think what it could do with better and more thrillling scripts!
ReplyDeleteThough DWTS results did low 2 and highs 1 it still managed above 10 million and higher than eveerything on tuesday except maybe shield
ReplyDeleteI also see them moving DWTS to Tuesday only if Big Bang goes to Monday
ReplyDeleteDST? Do you mean DWTS? I couldn't find a show with the acronym DST.
ReplyDeleteDaylight Savings Time
ReplyDeleteThe Voice is absolutely killing the competition! *attempts to perform Shakira and Usher's robotic movements.*
ReplyDeleteAh, thank you! But how does summer time/DST influence viewership? Because shows air later/earlier?
ReplyDeletePutting DWTS and Agents of Shield, aka one of the highest skewing male shows on TV and one of the highest skewing female shows on TV, on the same night is a colossal mistake. They should simply do The Goldbergs+New Comedy+Agents of Shield+Agent Carter or if they kick comedies out of the night The Visitors+Agents of Shield+Agent Carter. Besides, I am not even sure ABC should keep DWTS on fall and spring, much less return its results show
ReplyDeletePorran, The Voice lacrou o cu das inimigas.
ReplyDeleteWhats up with the serious viewership spike for New Girl? Is that 4.20 correct?
ReplyDeletePeople tend to be out later, enjoying Daylight, thus not being home to watch the shows on time. There's a brief article with an analysis over on TVBTN.
ReplyDeleteThanks for explaining!
ReplyDeleteSo does this mean AoS are definitely getting cancelled? That's what they get for casting all teens to play 80% of roles. Marvel movies are about different characters who are well into their 30, so why would they make is so very disney channel like.
ReplyDeleteOuch for TO, and the episode was so good, they did a poor job advertising its awesomeness. Next week will tune and ironically the episode will suck.
Brooklyn 99 - nooo it will probably get cancelled and i like it. Their episodes are 50x50. Sometimes they are hilarious, like the one with pizza place and firefigthers, or captain's birthday party, and sometimes they are really boring.
MTI
ReplyDeleteWow, bad night all around, except NBC. Mind Games is surely getting pulled on Friday. Worse than Lucky 7.
ReplyDeleteI THINK he's saying that Person Of Interest should be moved to Sunday or Monday next season. I have no idea what "hearing world" or change box" means.
ReplyDeleteI doubt it they were fine before the voice return. It will have a second season
ReplyDeleteWow disappointing with all of my shows (The Originals, Person of Interest, Agents of Shield) except for Supernatural and Chicago Fire. WTH.
ReplyDeleteOuch NCIS? Really? NCIS is doing fine. 17 million viewers, 2.4 rating? It's probably the only show that airs on TV that can easily afford to go up against The Voice.
ReplyDelete1.5 rating and nearly 3 million viewers is the final count.
ReplyDeleteI actually like AoS a lot right now. At the beginning I wasn't as into it either, but now I am.
ReplyDeleteI see your point about that. Agent Coulson is the only character preventing the show from sinking completely right now I'm guessing. However, I have begun to like all the main characters. Depends on preference. I think most Marvel fans do prefer having the "super" characters.
ReplyDeleteI do really like that the show has been used to guest star people from the movies and make connections to them.
Simple; people like to know how their shows are doing, and discussing it with other fans.
ReplyDeleteI think AoS ratings would be better if they didn't put it up against NCIS AND keep delaying episodes. Seriously, the show has had what, three month-long(at least) hiatuses in it's run so far? WTF is abc doing? I swear, it's been such a long time since I've seen a network make so many stupid decisions for a good show.
ReplyDeleteI guess that's the problem then. With some many great shows on the air they can't afford to have pacing issues. Well if it does get renewed I'll catch up over the summer and see for myself
ReplyDeletewoww, Glee is so low right now, it's not totally a surprise, but these numbers are still very low for Fox..
ReplyDeleteIts ratings have not been awful at all - just because some people expected its ratings to blow through the roof doesn't mean the ratings it's been getting aren't great. Expectations apart, here are how facts stand:
ReplyDeleteShow's average from most recent airings: 2.20
ABC's drama average from most recent airings: 1.70
Shield's relative ratings (aka the ones that matter for renewal): 130%
For comparison sake, the only other shows with relative ratings higher than this are: The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, About Boy, Scandal, Grey's Anatomy, Supernatural, New Girl, The Blacklist, NCIS, The Vampire Diaries, Arrow, Growing Up Fisher and The Originals (tie).
Yes, last night result was bad since it tied the 1.70 average, which for a freshman is bad (I find that historically a 130% for a freshman is like a 120% for a veteran), but: A) 100% is still perfectly fine for a renewal even for a freshman and B) It's an isolated result and it may very well not be indicative of a trend.
In addition, Agents of Shield goes up one of the usually highest rated dramas on television (NCIS) and, as of last night, the highest rated reality show on television (The Voice), with local programming as its lead-in. The only other freshman to do anything remotely similar and come out with great ratings is Sleepy Hollow and even that one ended up its run at 120%, not to mention that the situation wasn't quite as awful (The Voice was not on in January and there was no other drama competition, 9pm is a higher PUT hour and Bones/Almost Human are better lead-ins than local programming in mos cases).
I think they should put it on summer to be honest, I don't think the numbers are even good enough for Fridays.
ReplyDeleteFox took a gamble with the renewal and they lost.
ReplyDeleteNext season though is certain to be shortened and thrown to Fridays. The question is how short will they make it.
I'm half expecting to hear about an episode reduction if it dips any lower.
Pretty much a downer across the board minus NBC. I'm not surprised AoS keeps dropping. I watched the first few eps and it never really got me to stick around. The Marvel appeal faded fast much like it's ratings. If it does get renewed which I'm sure it will, it needs to do major overhaul. Forget about the 2nd season slump, they need a game changer if the want to keep it on the air
ReplyDeleteIkr and I'm pretty sure it's not cheap to get song liscenses. Well Fox made the decision to renew it for 2 seasons way too early.
ReplyDeleteHardly. For whatever reason, people will watch comedy repeats on cable at 10 p.m., but not on network TV. For whatever reason, it hasn't worked. On the other hand, did anyone imagine ABC would draw TTP/Reign-like ratings at 10?
ReplyDeleteDespite is dismal ratings, ABC literally owns everything about AoS so I don't think they wanna give up on it just yet
ReplyDeletePaul Lee unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe Glee's numbers, how are they going to keep it going another season and a half with 2 and a half million?
ReplyDeleteWhat?
ReplyDeleteOhlala POI still loses the hearing world and the rate also is disturbing but not for a renewal for a change box, Yes. Feels his change box either on Sunday evening or Monday evening I think.
ReplyDeletewell their ratings have been awful, and who knows how successful agent carter is gonna be
ReplyDeleteOuch Glee.
ReplyDeleteIMO, The Voice is absolutely on fire this season. It's the only reality series I watch and this year the judges banter has been absolutely outstanding. This is the perfect pannel, I laugh more with it than with most sitcoms on TV.
ReplyDelete
