Thursday 3/27/14 Metered Markets
Basketball Leads CBS to Victory; Modest Start for “Surviving Jack” on Fox

Household
Rating/Share
CBS 5.5/ 9
ABC 5.1/ 8
Fox 4.2/ 7
NBC 2.9/ 5
CW 1.4/ 2

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Thursday 3/28/13:
NBC: +45, CBS: +20, ABC: – 4, CW: -12, Fox: -21

—–

-Winners:
NCAA Basketball (CBS), “Grey’s Anatomy” (ABC), “Scandal” (ABC)

-Disappointing:
“Surviving Jack” (Fox)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” (ABC), “Parenthood” (NBC)

—–

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS dominated this final Thursday in March care of the ongoing 2014 NCAA Basketball Tournament (Dayton vs. Stanford, and UCLA vs. Florida last night). Coverage of the match-ups (which ended at approximately 12:30 a.m.) averaged an estimated 5.5 rating/9 share in the household overnights for the primetime portion, which was 20 percent above the year-ago games (4.6/ 8 on 3/28/13). Keep in mind, of course, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate.

In series-premiere news, Fox sitcom “Surviving Jack” disappointed at a distant third-place 3.5/ 5 at 9:30 p.m., which was 39 percent below the live (and diluted) “American Idol” results show at 9 p.m. (5.7/ 9). One year-earlier, one hour of “American Idol” averaged a 7.8/13 in the 8 p.m. hour (on 3/28/13). “Surviving Jack” did, however, outdeliver a 9:30 p.m. telecast of “Raising Hope” on the year-ago evening (2.5/ 4) by 40 percent.

Earlier in the evening on Fox was always demo friendly “Hell’s Kitchen” at a second-place 3.9/ 6 at 8 p.m.

Tops for the night in the overnights was drama “Scandal” on ABC, with a 6.7/11 from 10-11 p.m. Comparably, that was 14 percent above the year-ago evening and eight percent ahead of still solid lead-in “Grey’s Anatomy” (6.2/10 at 9 p.m.). Growth for “Grey’s Anatomy” over failing lead-in “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” (#4: 2.4/ 4 at 8 p.m.) was a hefty 158 percent.

Elsewhere, two encore hours of “Hollywood Game Night” on NBC (8 p.m. – #3: 3.2/ 5; 9 p.m. – #4: 2.6/ 4) delivered the show’s best two overnight Thursday ratings this season despite not being original. And on-the-fence “Parenthood” followed with a distant third-place 2.8/ 5 at 10 p.m., which was one-tenth of a rating point behind an encore of “Law & Order: SVU” on the year-ago evening (2.9/ 5 on 1/28/13).

The CW, meanwhile, was on par with recent levels care of already renewed dramas “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.6/ 3) and “Reign” (1.3/ 2).

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). 1. Reign stayed stable from last week :)

    Hoping for 0.7 again

Will NBC cancel both Parenthood and Revolution? The numbers would seem to justify it, but most of their schedule is pitiful right now.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I think Parenthood can survive. NBC owns it but its ratings have hit lows. However, their 18-34 ratings are passable compared to some NBC dramas. NBC doesn't own Believe and Crisis and they aren't doing well in the ratings. I hope Parenthood and Revolution can come back but if I am forced to choose, I would say Parenthood just because I've been watching it for years. I think a cable network like Syfy should pick up Revolution.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Do you think Scandal got that 2.9 or even a 3.0?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Hoping reign ties the 100 in demo this week!!

    ReplyDelete
  6. I'm guessing 1.6 or 1.7 for "Surviving Jack".

    ReplyDelete
  7. Based on these metered market ratings, I would say a 2.9 but I hope it's a 3.0!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Revolution is probably dead, wich is kind of sad since the premise originally REALLY interested me (I was hoping for a Fallout like series) but ultimately let me down.

The way Revolution was pushed back despite the ratings indicates a later burnoff

    ReplyDelete
  9. FOX thought Surving Jack had a chance to become a hot if they gave it AI as lead-in. But they realy didn't consider AI's declining ratings. 1.3 is pitiful.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Holy crap AI barely above Hells Kitchen.

    ReplyDelete
  11. have you read what ny post wrote about Scandal? you should.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Revolution wasn't pushed back. And why would the burnoff season 2, they haven't removed it from schedule.

    ReplyDelete
  13. waaaait, I thought I read a news about Revolution being pulled from the schedule ? Or did I mix up something there?

    ReplyDelete
  14. It got pre-empted.

    ReplyDelete
  15. AI below 8MM. Wow April is going to be a disaster for them. I think Survivor finale may beat AI on May 21.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It didn't actually. That was a false report by TVBTN : http://www.spoilertv.com/2014/03/revolution-episode-218-austin-city_24.html

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think Hells Kitchen might soon start beating AI in the demo rating. And i didn't think that would happen. Ever.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It didn't get pulled. TVBTN reported that new episode airing on April 2 was being pushed back for two weeks, but that turned out to be false: http://www.spoilertv.com/2014/03/revolution-episode-218-austin-city_24.html

    ReplyDelete
  19. ohh, thanks. I totally got that mixed up with the whole BatB situation o.O

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh yeah, BATB was the one that got pulled.

    ReplyDelete
  21. That's only for the April 2 one, The April 9th epsiode is still pre-empted.

    ReplyDelete
  22. That wasn't pre-empted. It was meant to be an SVU repeat from the start.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh, I'm talking about the one that got replaced with a Prince Harry special, I guess that was last week's.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yep. I wouldn't call that one pre-empted either, as SVU was also repeat that day.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 0.6 for Reign
    0.7 for TVD only

    ReplyDelete
  26. Devon Maxwell-PierceMarch 28, 2014 at 3:40 PM

Yeah, the first season was really poorly executed. I stopped watching. I've heard it's getting better. I have a friend that works on the show, and they seem to be acting as if it's the end. It's kinda sad, but I don't see NBC making the commitment for two more years, essentially, when it's not likely to syndicate well.

  28. I don't really see why it was a big deal over the schedule change.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Do you know if it was pre-empted somewhere? 'Cause that drop is ridiculous...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well it just didn't fall into what I expected it'd be and so I gave up after 4 episodes.

I don't see NBC picking it up either, it's a.) not going to make it to syndication and b.) wouldn't sell well there either

Glad they know to bring it to an ending tough. At least something

    ReplyDelete
  31. No reports of CW being pre-empted last night so far.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Doesn't Nielson knw that OUAT & OUATIW are two distinct shows? Lol

    ReplyDelete
  33. TVBTN made it sound that it was being pre-empted because it hit series low, which worried people that it is a sign of cancellation.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thats not how preemption works. The ratings would have been inflated, meaning bigger rating in fast nationals, since anything airing on CW at 8PM would be counted into the ratings for VD. Only in finals we get the real picture. So far no one is reporting preemptions.

    ReplyDelete
  35. My guess is that Brennan or what's his face didn't bother into writing the whole thing.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yikes at TVD.
    Hopefully it adjusts up.

Reign almost matched it this week.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Why is American Idol listed in your comment as a 2.1 rating but on the chart above it's a 1.9? Which one is right and which one is wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Not necessarily true.

Fast nationals measure performance in the timeslot rather than the programs themselves. That means that if TVD was pre-empted in a given market, the rating would incorporate the performance of that other program in the given market.

Since high-profile, local sports competition tends to draw bigger ratings in that market than scripted programming does, this usually means the fast nationals are artificially inflated (hence the downward adjustment in the finals).

However, if the substitute programming did WORSE than the scripted show's average, it would hold down the rating.

Substituting a low-profile college sports, NBA or MLB game for something like The Big Bang Theory, for instance, might drag CBS down in the fast nationals.

Here, however, there was nothing that would have artificially dragged TVD down. It simply had a bad night for some reason.

    ReplyDelete
  39. That four tenths drop for TVD is pretty hefty. Anybody have any clue as to why?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh so that's what the uproar was all about.

    ReplyDelete
  41. OUATIW did better than last week.. :)
Too bad it's already been canceled.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Maybe just a series low, since no reports of preemptions.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Arrow has had some rough episodes too. I think it's the time of year, though usually the shows don't drop THAT much (I would expect a .08 at least from TVD and Arrow so a 0.7 is surprising).

    ReplyDelete
  44. When is the last time a show was picked up for new episodes by another channel?

Hoping a cancelled show will be picked up by some other channel is like expecting a good grade in a hard subject at school without studying. VERY unlikely. I never hold my breath for a show that is cancelled. Cancelled = dead for me because I've never seen a show change channels before.

Syfy of all channels. Syfy is so cheap and cancels its shows left and right. I doubt it would decide to pick up Revolution.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Nothing works for ABC on thursdays at 8 couldnt they give up and give OnceIW another chance? i know i'm being stupid but really why cant they?

Nice for Reign and Ouch for TVD! Great for GA

    ReplyDelete
  46. If twitter is to be believed, people are tuning out due to comments made at Paleyfest. At Paleyfest it was mentioned that theirs Delena stuff coming up and people tuned out in protest.

I've seen some people comment though that the HIMYM cast was on Inside the Actor's Studio and people tuned into that instead. I personally think this is more likely as Reign was unaffected. The people were at their TV's but watched something else in that time slot.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Do HIMYM and TVD share a big audience?

    ReplyDelete
  48. That's a shame. It's too bad Kripke mangled the first season so much.

    ReplyDelete
  49. And it might adjust up as well!!! YEEEEEES.

    ReplyDelete
  50. As a Katherine fan I checked out last week's episode to see if the show was still worth watching, it wasnt, so I didnt watch last night. I guess many people are tired of the show and its recycled plotlines and dull characters.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Cougar Town to TBS. The Killing to Netflix. But yeah, I agree these kinds of moves are exceedingly rare.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I don't watch The Vampire Diaries( I stopped on season 2) but am I wrong or the ratings are dropping? I don't remember see them so low.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Most CW shows have had lower than usual ratings lately. The effect of spring I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I wouldn't say entirely, but they target the same general demo.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yeah, considering all the shows on TV channels that air every year, it happens, but is rare. The chances of it happening to even a show I watch (I watch over 30 shows in the course of a year) is sim. I may never see it.
