Early Ratings Analysis

The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

For more information on the Nielsen Ratings see this Wikipedia Entry.

NOTE: The opinions expressed here are NOT those of SpoilerTV but of the Author of this Article, Marc Berman.

Thursday 3/13/14 Metered Markets
Respectable Return for “Hell’s Kitchen” on Fox

Household
Rating/Share
CBS 6.7/11
Fox 5.0/ 8
ABC 4.8/ 8
NBC 2.3/ 4
CW 0.9/ 2

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Thursday 3/14/13:
ABC: +14, NBC: no change, Fox: -14, CBS: -25, CW: -36

—–

-Winners:
“The Big Bang Theory” (CBS), “Grey’s Anatomy” (ABC), “Two and a Half Men” (CBS), “American Idol” (Fox), “Scandal” (ABC)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” (ABC), “Community” (NBC), “Parks and Recreation” (NBC), “The Crazy Ones” (CBS), “Hollywood Game Night” (NBC), “Parenthood” (NBC)

—–

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was another Thursday overnight victory for CBS, which bested No. 2 Fox by 1.8 household rating points. Three-season renewed “The Big Bang Theory” topped night, of course, with an 11.5 rating/19 share in households at 8 p.m. And it led into a dominant 6.8/11 for “The Millers,” which dipped by a typical (and significant) 41 percent from “Big Bang.” Relocated “Two and a Half Men” followed with a compatible (and first-place) 6.5/10 at 9 p.m., but a third-place 4.3/ 7 for “The Crazy Ones” at 9:30 p.m. (down by 34 percent) does not bode well for a second season renewal. Although “Elementary” perked up to second at 10 p.m. with a 5.7/10, competing “Scandal” on ABC (#1: 6.2/11) will clearly increase its advantage in all the key demos.

In season premiere news, “Hell’s Kitchen” with Gordon Ramsay on Fox returned with a second-place 3.9/ 7 in the 8 p.m. hour, which should be enough to register respectfully in the key young adult demos. And it led into a one-hour live edition of “American Idol,” which rose to a 6.0/ 9 from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, “American Idol” outdelivered week-ago occupant “Rake” (2.4/ 4 on March 5) by 150 percent.

Over at ABC, “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” could not compete at 8 p.m., with a distant third-place 2.2/ 4 in the overnights. But veteran “Grey’s Anatomy” perked up to a second-place 5.9/ 9 at 9 p.m. (one-tenth of a rating point behind competing “American Idol”), followed by aforementioned “Scandal” at a first-place 6.2/11 at 10 p.m.

Elsewhere, it was slim picking at NBC, as usual, care of sitcoms “Community” (#4: 2.0/ 3) and “Parks and Recreation” (#3t, 2.1/ 3), “Hollywood Game Night” (#4: 2.1/ 3) and “Parenthood” (#3: 2.6/ 4), which has just not resonated on Thursday. And The CW populated the night with a repeat “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 0.7/ 1) and an original installment of “Reign” (#5: 1.1/ 2).

In late night, NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” dipped to a 2.9/ 7 from 11:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m., which was nine percent below Jay Leno on the year-ago evening. But it was enough to still beat competing “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on ABC (2.6/ 7) and “The Late Show With David Letterman” on CBS (2.2/ 6).

Next was “Late Night With Seth Meyers” on NBC at a dominant 1.4/ 5 from 12:30-1:30 a.m. (which was up by eight percent from Jimmy Fallon on the year-ago evening), followed by “Nightline” on ABC in the 12:30 a.m. half-hour (1.5/ 5) and “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson” on CBS (1.0/ 3). “Later With Carson Daly” on NBC closed the night with a 0.8/ 3 at 1:30 a.m.

—–

Correction: Thursday’s newsletter incorrectly labeled sophomore NBC drama “Revolution,” which was given the difficult task anchoring Wednesday this season. Opposite established “Survivor” on CBS, “The Middle” on ABC and “Arrow” on The CW (not to mention “American Idol” at present on Fox), “Revolution” has consistently outperformed sitcoms airing on the network one year earlier. Based on the live plus same day data this week, “Revolution” averaged 4.7 million viewers and a 1.3 rating/4 share among adults 18-49, which was on par with recent levels.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

  1. For those complaining about Berman and "he never corrects" re: Revolution, see last paragraph.

So it seems Scandal did about the same in ratings as last week, right? Demo around 2.8?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Looks like Reign is going to score 0.6? If yes it would be amazing, considering there was no new TVD

    ReplyDelete
  4. Did American Idol fall from last week even with a weaker time slot and an actual lead in? Last week, it got 6.7/11 and this week it got 6.0/9. I hope Reign didn't do bad. If it didn't, that means it's not lead in dependent and actually has an audience. I hope Community doesn't fall below a 1.0.

    ReplyDelete
  5. And its not the first time he has done that either! But it doesn't matter, people just like to bitch about him instead of just looking at the numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think it looks like a 0.5. It would be on par with Beauty and The Beast's result of last year, with the difference that Beauty and The Beast had a new episode of The Vampire Diaries as lead-in. 0.5 would be kind of good, but Reign will need a lead-in next year, too. It's not ready to survive on its own.
It will probably moved from thursday (maybe to tuesday with The Originals?).

    ReplyDelete
  7. Is it the first time he corrects himself? Thursday's mistakes weren''t the first.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I read 'ratings news' posts since months. When was the last time he corrected himself?

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think it depends how it did against Idol. Idol and Grey's both do good in the young female demo.. And Reign this time doesn't have the help of VD who does very good in the W18-34 and usually faces Idol. Reign usually loses a chunk of it but still does very well for CW in that demo. Regarding the HH numbers Reign seems the lowest we seen it so far.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Exactly. People should be grateful that Berman compiles the prelim ratings, instead people complain about typos and who he picks as winner/losers. I just like getting the early numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  11. If he could be more objective on his posts (it's clear how much he loves Cbs shows and dislikes Supernatural, for example. People aren't paranoid), people would be more grateful.

    ReplyDelete
  12. He has been doing this a lot longer than a few months.Who remembers exact days or dates?

    ReplyDelete
  13. And the times he didn't? no one is loved by everybody. There's a reason if there are people who feel he's not objective and dislikes different shows.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think people are very sensitive regarding his opinions. And they start complaining about him in this comment section where he never sees the complaints. They can always go to his forum and tell him what they think about it. He often responds there.

    ReplyDelete
  15. But a lot of people don't like SPN or Revenge or whatever,if your coming to this thread for ratings and to see how your show did then what he has to say shouldn't bother you.Everyone has an opinion but i'm sure you don't respond to each one that might be negative.. And we all know he has his likes and dislikes but does it mean it has to be pointed out day in day out.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yes,he could be more objective and I wish he was.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Then compmain to HIM over in HIS forum. Not here. He won't see your complaints here.

    ReplyDelete
  18. When he says Beauty and The Beast deserves the cancellation, he's right and objective. We can see it from Beauty and The Beast's terrible ratings. But when he criticizes Supernatural (like last season when he loved to say Supernatural was tired and obtained good results only because of Arrow), he's not objective.
Another example is Mom. He loves it and praises it and he says its renewal is well deserved since months, when its results are just acceptable.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wait. What are you comparing Mom too? If you comparing Mom to SPN then i gotta tell you Mom is doing a hell of a lot better than SPN in terms of ratings and viewers..

    ReplyDelete
  20. I just explained one of the possible reasons people complain. I used to complain here weeks ago. Then I stopped.
I appreciate the fact he gives us the numbers, but I still think he could be more objective on his posts. That's all.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Series low for Grey's again?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I happen to think that GA would be able to stop the bleeding if it had something resembling a lead-in for once. It is amazing how it self-starts this way at the 9pm hour against Idol and everything else it has been thrown at during the years.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Grey's was boring last night. No wonder it almost hit a series low. Not trying to be mean or anything but still...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well, thanks a lot. Mom is a Cbs show and I know the ratings of both shows. Mom always loses part of Mike & Molly rating and for a newcomer sitcom with big names involved, it's not something great.
If you missunderstand my comment, it's not my fault.

I didn't say Supernatural is obtaining bigger ratings, but it's doing great on the Cw, like last season, and it isn't and wasn't tired.

Nothing personal against Mom (I love Anna Faris and I'm grateful to Chuck Lorre for Dharma & Greg). I think its results are acceptable, nothing more. Like Reign's results are acceptable. Both shows are renewed and both will need to improve or stay stable next season.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I am pretty sure the fact that it was up against AI, with whom it shares a huge chunk of W18-34 audience is the reason it's down. The quality of an actual episode is very unlikely to affect that episode's ratings; if anything, it will affect next week's ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  26. but its rentention from what I saw was good and thats what MB mainly focuses on. Its one of the resons he was so down on SPN last season because its HH rating retention out of Arrow was poor.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Community steady! Thank God it didn't drop.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 2.5M beats AI! Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Of course everyone has opinions. There are shows I don't like, but that doesn't mean I will deny they're obtaining good resuts.

    ReplyDelete
  30. TAHM tied The Millers! Next week I think it will increase from TM :-)

  32. No need to get bitching about it i was going by YOUR comment. And your going on and on about something you said,if other people including myself misunderstood what you meant by that then, that is not MY fault.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow, a 0.6 for Reign without a new episode of The Vampire Diaries as lead-in and against American Idol instead of Rake.
Good result :) I hope it won't be adjusted down.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 0.6 for Reign without TVD as Lead-in. Amazing. Seems like CW made good decision with early Renewal.

I hope it wont adjust down

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yay for Reign!!! I hope it doesn't get adjusted down. But for now, LONG MAY SHE REIGN!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yess Reign 0.6!Now will people stop saying Reigns leadin dependant ?It got the same demo without a original VD as it did most of the time with an original VD.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Reign was pre-empted for basketball in some markets. So I am expecting a downward adjustment.

But probably not by more than 0.1. So a good showing -- proof it is not lead-in dependent (but also proof it is squandering the TVD lead-in, since a show in that slot SHOULD be benefiting from TVD).

    ReplyDelete
  38. would be amazing but I think it will be a 0.5 which is still good airing after a repeat

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's not the first time you misunderstand my comments. And I write in english, not in chinese.
I never said Supernatural obtains bigger ratings than Mom. I didn't compare their ratings. I meant Marc doesn't recognize Supernatural's good ratings, while he praises Mom and says it deserves a renewal since months, when it obtained and obtains acceptable ratings.

Mom was renewed so he and the fans of that sitcom are over the moon. Good for them :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I know Reign was preempted in the memphis last night.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Are you kidding, it was one of the best episodes of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Damn, Grey's is constantly hitting 2s this season.

    ReplyDelete
  43. That's bad news :( I hope (if adjusted down) its rating will be 0.5, not 0.4.

    ReplyDelete
  44. People talk about pre-emptings u_u if it will be adjusted down, let's hope in a 0.5 (which would be on par with Beauty and The Beast's result of last year, but Beauty had as lead-in a new episode of The Vampire Diaries).

    ReplyDelete
  45. wow huge drop for elementary

    ReplyDelete
  46. You should say the same about TTP squandering Arrows leadin.

    ReplyDelete
  47. So far no show has been able to utilise TVD's lead in.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Not to mention it is competing with the other failures at abc no wonder it was not in danger.

    ReplyDelete
  49. 0.6 is great fro Reign being on hsi own i hope with the pre-emptions doesnt adjust down.
No show seems to work for ABC at 8 and Greys is not that lead independant but still it could work if there could find a show that could give GA a little boost.
TBBT down but still great ratings and i love seeing 2.5 men beating AI

    ReplyDelete
  50. Exactly, Grey's is the lead-in for Scandal, and that definitely helps the latter. Bearing in mind, even it's lowest rating is still ahead of other shows in general (TBBT & co excluded), and is still an ABC heavyweight champion. Not at all worried about it being cancelled, esp. now that Patrick and Ellen have signed two-year contracts. It'll definitely be renewed.

    ReplyDelete
  51. My dear, wise, omabin! Please explain something to me, because it's always bothered me, and you're my go-to TV person :) The last few years I've been taught that good lead-ins (should) provide good ratings for the show that comes after, which makes sense because mostly they do. But why do networks then put some of their highest-rated shows AFTER new shows or low-rated shows? (The Originals/Supernatural, Once in Wonderland/Grey's Anatomy, and maybe Revolution/SVU) Shouldn't it be the other way around? And shouldn't networks' biggest comedies start the night like HIMYM/TBBT? (Because Modern Family and New Girl air at 9)

    ReplyDelete
  52. I like Grey's Anatomy (but even if I didn't my idea wouldn't change), but I think a veteran show should be able to obtain good results even if it airs after a weak one. Criminal Minds and Supernatural proved it's possible when they were aired after repeats or low rated shows (Supernatural was aired after a low rated Lady Gaga's special, a few months ago).
