Pretty Little Liars- 4.22 "Cover For Me" Review

Pretty Little Liars dropped the Mother-load on us last night, with a new 'A' suspect that's pretty twisted, but aside from that the episode fell a little flat.

We began with a conversation between Spence and her mother, Veronica Hastings. Spencer's just completed a 3-day stint in rehab, winning the Shortest Rehab Stay Of All Time Award. As usual Mrs. Hastings tried to keep it light and pretty, while Spencer was just kind of

The next day, Spence was informed that although she passed rehab with flying colors, the Hastings parents weren't convinced that she wouldn't take another detour on her road to recovery, so they took away all of her electronics, told her no school or Toby for a while and hired Dean, a hot drug and alcohol counselor, to be on her like white on rice and help her stay clean. Spence was not down for any of this, until she learned that her recovery could bring up repressed memories, which could in turn help her remember what happened "that night"...and boy did the memories come a-flowin'. While on a run with Dean, Spencer recalled chasing Ali with a shovel, seeing her fall, and having blood splatter on her...Wait, are they trying to say Spencer...OUR Spencer...could have killed Ali?

Meanwhile, Aria was occupying her mind with "college tours", and by "college tours" I mean "skipping the college tours to bang a hot musician that is actually her age".

You know, I'm pretty alright with Aria sluttin' it up a little for the moment, not to mention, the chemistry between the she and Riley was adorable. He left her a freaking Beat Up A Jerk coupon! I'd be willing to bet this isn't the last we see of him.

Emily did her Emilyest to head up solving the mystery, which is all we can ask for, bless her heart. She managed to get SOME answers though so

After giving Ezra like 3 solid minutes of side-eye, she set her sights on Mona. A surprisingly open Mona told Em that she teamed up with Ezra in exchange for him editing the parts of his book that could get her arrested. Ezra told Mona to date Mike in order to get closer to Aria. Mona pulled an Ezra, however, and actually fell for Mike, so she ended up breaking up with him to keep him out of the A-ness of it all.

Hanna approached Detective Holbrooke to apologize for "accidentally running into his mouth" and clear up any inevitable weirdness the incident could have caused. Det. Holbrooke wanted to talk to Hanna about a different incident, however, at which point Paige's note from last week made a re-appearance. The police are investigating it and think one of the 4 liars left the tip.

When Aria got back to Rosewood, she made a beeline to Ezra's apartment to tell him to get the hell out of town. He tried to convince her that they could "work through this", at which point I literally LOL'ed because that's just stupid and Aria was all:

Before she took off, he gave her his manuscript, which I have nicknamed "The Pedo-files", adding that it could help the girls out. He also claimed he was in NY to return the payment advance for the book that he doesn't plan on publishing anymore. Aria took The Pedo-files but really didn't give a damn about the rest of it. Is it bad that I want this Aria to stick around for a while?

Aria's curiosity got the best of her in the end and she decided to read The Pedo-files and what she found called for a group meeting. The girls met at Emily's, where Aria revealed that Ezra thinks Mrs. DiLaurentis is -A!

( I DEFINITELY believe that Mrs. D is involved in all this, but I'm not sure if I believe she's THE -A.) Shortly after the revelation, Hanna noticed a lavender envelope on Emily's wall and asked her where it came from. When Em said Paige, Hanna put 2 and 2 together, as Detective Holbrooke's letter was in the same envelope. She pulled Em to the side and asked her if she told Paige about Ali being alive...Way to leave an anonymous tip in easily identifiable wrapping PAIGE.

This week's -A scene showed -A tampering with Spencer's bridal gown for the charity bridal show next week, which seemed very Mrs. DiLaurentis-like to me. I honestly don't know why these girls keep doing shows and events together when they KNOW hell always breaks loose but it should be fun for us to watch!

Odds and Ends:

-How sad was Ezra trying to tape that poster back together in his apartment? Almost as sad as Hanna and Travis' first date...almost.
-Speaking of Ezra's apartment, I'm surprised the issue of Aria destroying it last week didn't come up at all.
-Whenever -A gets up close and personal with the girls without them knowing, it always freaks me out the most(ie Hanna's dental work and Em's massage). This week's dirt pile and note in the bed for Spencer gave me the willies.
- Furthermore, what was up with making that comment to Spencer about "fresh sheets" after the dirt in the bed -A stunt and later, creeping in her room? That broad gets more and more unsettling every episode.

What did you think of this week's episode?
Let's have a pretty little chat below!

  2. Thanks for the .gifs! They definitely brightened up the review. The promo pics for this episode definitely left a lot to be desired.

I really loved the camera shot of the open condom wrapper. I was a little surprised that the censors let that through, but hey, at least they're saying that if you're gonna slut it up to get over a guy, at least use protection. I did like Riley though so I wouldn't be pissed to see him come back around, although I think Aria needs some alone time first.

Mama D is definitely on the creep side. I don't know that she's Uber -A, but she knows a whole lot more than what she's let on up to now. It's no wonder the girls are so messed up when all the adults are this shady too.

  4. Thanks Caitlin!

I hope Aria stays single for a bit as well. She's so much more feisty when she's not attached and I prefer my female characters more spicy than swoon-y.

The DiLaurentis' and the Hastings are at the core of all of the big secrets on the show. Given the interactions between the moms this episode, as well as their reactions to Spencer last week, they DEFINITELY have some strange understanding about SOMETHING beyond their strange understanding about Jason. We can only hope that we actually find out one day, haha.
