Glee "Trio" and "City of Angels" Review and Favorite Song Poll

Having been travelling, I’ve gotten a little behind on my reviews for Glee, so look for two posts that will catch us back up. Here is the first.

Glee, “Trio,” was written by Rivka Sophia Rossi and directed by Ian Brennan. Brennan is a familiar face but this episode of Glee is literally the only entry on Rossi’s IMDb page. That said the episode is well written, blending the theme of trios throughout the episode as alliances shift and change. The episode showcases Will (Matthew Morrison) and Emma’s (Jayma Mays) journey to become pregnant, to become a trio. Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) is further redeemed in this episode and I have to say I thought Sam’s (Chord Overstreet) sudden interest in her was hilarious – with Blaine (Darren Criss) they formed another satisfying trio. Other than more drama between Rachel (Lea Michele) and Santana (Naya Rivera) which I’m tired of, Morrison and Mays give great performances and I wish that we could keep Adam Lambert (Elliott) on the show forever. Kurt (Chris Colfer) finally has enough of his feuding friends and Pamela Landsbury is declared dead – though I wonder if we will see it revived shortly. I loved their new pop culture themed trio: One Three Hill – LOL! This episode does feature some amazing songs – which was your favorite? Vote in the poll below!

Glee, “City of Angels,” was written by Jessica Meyer and directed by Elodie Keene. Keene hasn’t directed since season one, and does a fantastic job with this episode. This is also Meyer’s first attempt at writing and like Rossi, she really knocks it out of the park. Meyer is listed on IMDb as being an assistant to the executive producers on both Glee and American Horror Story, however. I have to say that I was shocked that the New Directions lost the Nationals, but it’s fitting that they don’t go out as winners.

The episode provides another opportunity to reflect on the too short life of Cory Monteith (Finn). We get outstanding performances from Chord Overstreet and Romy Rosemont (Carole Hudson-Hummel). Carole is still struggling to come to terms with Finn’s death, and Sam is bearing the weight of being Finn’s chosen heir.

Once again the show gets hilarious judges: Marlee Matlin (a deaf judge?), Joanna Rohrback (google her if you don’t know who she is – hilarious), and Jackee! The competition wasn’t really as close as it has been in the past, I thought that the New Directions really might have won, but it was a typical Murphy/Falchuk twist for them to come in second. The episode did feature a number of great songs though – many of them tributes to Finn. What was you favorite performance in the episode – Vote in the poll below!

  1. Trio - Danny's Song
City of Angels - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (It was either this or Mr. Roboto/Counting Stars but I didn't like the Mr.Roboto part of that song)
