Continuum - 3.02 - Minute Man - Review : Trust

Continuum continued its third season last Sunday with "Minute Man" (I don't really understand why they choose "Minute" for the titles this season, I thought they were going to use ‘third' or 'three'....). I must say, although I have enjoyed that episode, I was a bit disappointed. The episode was good, it mainly focused on the aftermath of last episode…. And maybe that was the reason I was disappointed. “Minute by Minute” was such an excellent episode, “Minute Man” felt weak in comparison. The pace was slower, the story was moving forward but it felt kinda all over the place.

My favorite part of the episode was Alec and Kiera. I’m glad they finally had the chance to talk about Alec’s betrayal. Kiera explained everything to him, even that she had to get rid of one of the two Alec. His decision to travel through time was reckless, and Alec needs to recognize it. I understand he did it out of love for Emily, to save her life and it actually worked because she’s still alive (for now… I’m expecting her to get killed… again). But, still, he betrayed her friend, Kiera, and took her chance to get back to her family. It was selfish. So now Kiera doesn’t trust him anymore.
In order to redeem himself, Alec was trying to find who killed Fiera. I’m really wondering who killed her ? Maybe Alec is lying, or maybe it was Kellog… Or the Freelancers ? Pretty much everybody is a suspect… Or a might be someone we haven’t seen yet. We don't even know if the killer knew it was Fiera or did he think it was Kiera ? For now, my bet is on the Freelancers, to prevent Fiera to meet Kiera but we will know more in the next episodes.
Speaking of doubles, Falec had a bigger part this week, as he was starting to question what was going on. Of course, the guy is a genius and he can feel something is off. He found some blood (of Fiera’s death), the device was misplaced and he lost communication with Kiera’s equipment. I’m sure in a few episodes, Falec will catch Alec and then things will be interesting. For now, Alec is just hiding from Falec. I’m really wondering which one of them will turn out to be the Alec from Kiera’s future. Falec seems more nice and trustworhty than Alec, for the moment.... And Kiera needs to explain her version of “getting rid of”.

One of the major consequences of Alec’s timetravel (despite Emily still being alive), was Escher’s death. I loved Kiera and Alec's faces when Carlos broke the news. They were as shocked as we were last week. Escher is really dead… Alec wasn’t that sad about it (maybe he’s considering time travelling again to save him ?).
Kellog’s face was so good too when Kiera told him who Escher really was. As he said, he didn’t see that one coming… And neither did Emily. She killed her father in law. That could damage any relationship. I love how Escher’s death connects all four of them. For now, everything is secret but I can’t wait for Alec to find out the truth. I’m sure what his reaction would be. Sure, he would feel Kiera betrayed him this time by not telling him about Kellog. But if he ended up killing Kellog, that’d be fine by me.

Libert8 (even if they are only 3) was back this week ! Yay ! I love Garza, she looks so fierce and badass. They had to deal with the mayor, because after helping him for his campaign, he tried to turn his back on them as soon as he was elected. Not a smart move, Mister Mayor.
So, Garza and her friends kidnapped him and recorded a confession video from him. It was political suicide for him…. Not just political because he shot himself at the end. It was surprising, I thought he would have been stronger and tried to fight them. At least now, there will be a new campaign !

And finally, the best part of the episode was the flashback ! We finally learnt how Kiera became a CPS protector. Her mother had some contraband stuffs (like books…), I’ve never heard books were forbidden in the future. It was nice to watch young Kiera (despite Rachel Nichols’ awful wig) and her relationship with her mother and sister. She thought differently from them, and they didn’t understand her when she announced she’d be a CPS protector. It was weird at the end, Kiera, in our time, actually bought the place she will live in in 2067. Does that mean she is the one who started the family tradition to live in that place ? How can she even afford it ?

“Minute Man” was probably the worst tile for this episode, but it was a good episode. I wish there would have been more action, and sometimes less talk. I just Garza and Kiera to fight together again. They were so cool.

Timetravel notes :
• Carlos was back ! It was nice to see him and I’m glad Kiera told him everything right away. Hope he will play a bigger part this season.
• No Freelancers this week… I miss them already !
• Falec finding out about Jason being his son… Not that exciting.
• New opening credits ! What did you think ? I like them but I miss the voice over

What did you like of “Minute Man” ? Hit the comments !

  1. Solid episode and good review Romain! I agree it was great to see Carlos and Kiera didn't hide/delay any info from him.

    New credits were pretty cool.

    Flashback was good.

    Good review. Nice detail.

I'm going to go out on a limb and state now that the flashback scenes were tremendously important with Kiera finding that necklace. Along with with apartment, its starting to reveal a theory I've had that Kiera is her own ancestor.

As the story unfolds it will likely reveal that she was always destined to remain in the past (most likely with Carlos).

  3. Thanks :)

It's a very nice theory, I haven't thought about it... It could be true, but it'd be so weird for Kiera to be her own ancestor... I want her to go back to her time with her husband and son by the end of the show

  4. Could Kiera really go back and just fall into her old life? She is far from that person we met at the beginning of the show. Her husband seems to hold all the values she has come to reject.

  5. Well, maybe her old life as she knew it doesn't exist anymore, with all the changes in history.... but I hope her son is still there.

  6. Carols clearly did not understand that this Kiera was only from a few days in his future so they were both the "real" Kiera that he had been working with the entire time - it's just the one who was alive was a tiny bit ahead in the time-line. I really wanted someone to explain it to him.

With this show I really just have to kind of go with the flow because having these different time-lines is a bit confusing for me. Like why did Alec going back in time somehow cause Escher's death? Kellog and Emily didn't do that in the timeline we already saw (or if they did I don't remember it), so what changed? Also, why did Kiera die in this new time-line? It didn't seem like Alec had really changed anything yet.

  7. What will happen with one of two, Alec?

  8. The sheer fact that future Alec was in the lab when Kellogg and him had their chat about Eschers intentions changed the course of what was to happen. Future Alec made it pretty clear that Escher had created the tech to power the device which ultimately changed Kelloggs intentions.

We know Emily already wanted out of her contract on Alec, so Kellogg having already known about her role in the situation would have seen an opportunity to pass the buck, get Escher killed without getting his hands dirty.

Kiera died in the new timeline most likely as a result of her curiosity from her chat with future Alec. She went into the lab at a time she didn't go in in the previous timeline, evidently disturbing someone who was already there.

The only thing I don't get is how future Kiera is managing to contact future Alec via his iPhone. Surely there are two identical phones with the exact same number? Who's to say which one she gets through to? I know that's a nitpicky detail but the little things always bug me in stories like this.

  9. Now that you've pointed that out that's going to bug me as well.
