Bitten - Vengeance - Review - "Protecting Family"

Aug 3, 2014

Bitten episode “Vengeance” was written by Will Pascoe and directed by John Fawcett. Pascoe has also written for Orphan Black, The Finder, and Combat Hospital. Fawcett has also directed Orphan Black (and directed the episode written by Pascoe), Lost Girl, Rookie Blue, and The Secret Circle. This episode made use of Fawcett’s experience with special effects as well as fight scenes. The core of this episode revolves around family.

As the episode opens, everyone is preparing for the showdown with Jimmy Koenig (Mackenzie Gray). You might remember Gray as Jax-Ur in Man of Steel. He does a great job of playing super-creepy enforcer Jimmy. We see in a flashback how ruthless he is as he takes advantage of a vulnerable, young Antonio, forcing him to kill for the first time. Antonio has just taken his son from his mother and is returning to his pack family.

Nick (Steve Lund) is sparing with Jeremy (Greg Bryk), testing him to make sure that he is fit enough after being poisoned to defeat Koenig. As Jeremy spars, he also briefs Nick on Koenig, telling him the story of Antonio’s encounter. He also tells Nick that Koenig really enjoys killing and the he blocks everything out to savor the moment as he takes a victim’s life. That moment leaves Koenig vulnerable. During the amazing fight sequence between Koenig and Jeremy, this information proves to be vital in allowing Nick to kill Koenig as he is savoring killing Jeremy. I was left wondering whether Jeremy, who seemed to be holding his own against Koenig, set this up on purpose. Was he teaching Nick to kill? Was he giving Nick the chance for revenge? Or is he preparing Nick to take over as pack leader some day? If the latter is the case, I don’t see Nick as being the best candidate for pack leader.

At the end of the episode, Jeremy joins Nick in the war room where Nick is going through the Sorrentino family history. A wolf’s history in the conventional world has to be erased upon his death, but the pack remembers it. Nick is finally embracing his heritage. Jeremy tells Nick that his father would have been proud of him. They both go to spread Antonio’s ashes together.

Elena (Laura Vandervoort) and Clay (Greyston Holt) also spar to prepare. Jeremy tells them that they are still one, even though the pack has lost members, and that they are family. He also tells them that he draws his strength from them. While he allows them to come as back up, they aren’t supposed to intervene.

It turns out that Santos (Michael Luckett), who is supposed to be in charge, didn’t even know that Koenig had set up the fight with Jeremy, and he’s angry with him. LeBlanc (Curtis Caravaggio) wants to take care of Koenig, but Santos warns him off. Caravaggio is doing a terrific job making LeBlanc as creepy as possible. Santos also tells LeBlanc that Clayton is famous for skinning a mutt alive. Unlike Koenig who loves killing for its own sake, Santos tells LeBlanc that Clayton does it out of obligation to the pack.

The fight turns into an ambush and LeBlanc manages to shoot Elena. I have to say that I thought it was ridiculous that there was a homeless person dressed exactly like Elena – down to blond hair in a ponytail – hiding in exactly that spot. However, it does lead to Clay essentially losing his mind when he thinks she’s been shot. We also see Elena trapped under a car and her body start to go into the change. She is able to stop it and will it back under control by focusing. By the end of the episode, we find out that this is unheard of – that no one can stop the change once it starts. Perhaps this is simply one more way she is different than the male pack members.

Elena is clearly terrified by LeBlanc. Jeremy apologizes and feels responsible. Clay goes to her and tells her that she’s safe with him and that she doesn’t have to pretend with him. She takes comfort in his arms and they make love in front of the fire. The next morning, however, she is preparing to leave to return to Toronto without, seemingly, even saying good bye to Clay. However, Jeremy tells her that while he understands that she’s worked hard for this photography exhibit, it’s too dangerous for her to be separated from the pack. He asks her to check in on Logan (Michael Xavier), but he also gives her a choice: Take Clay with her or stay at Stonehaven.

Logan and Rachel (Genelle Williams) have discovered that the baby is a boy. Xavier does a great job showing his distress over the sex of the baby while still keeping it from Rachel. Of course, this means – I assume – that the baby will also be a wolf. Logan now really has to make a decision. This, of course, parallels the choice faced by Antonio in the flashback. Will Jeremy have to hunt down Logan and the baby? What happens to Rachel in all this? Is the baby inevitably born a wolf?

Thinking that Logan is missing his own family, Rachel presents him with a picture of his family. Seeing Pete and Antonio trigger feelings of guilt about not responding to Jeremy’s call, so Logan decides that he will head to Stonehaven. However, before he can, he’s waylaid by Philip (Paul Greene) showing up at his house. Philip has been continuing to obsess about the video. Even Diane (Natalie Brown) tells him he’s being ridiculous, and this time she actually defends Elena, telling Philip that she’s had a hard life and that her family is important to her. She tells him to ask Logan if he doesn’t feel he can take it to Elena.

Philip confronts Logan about the clothes in the video. Logan tells him, very smoothly, that they had met to talk because she was upset about the family. Logan stresses that everyone has a different coping mechanism, and that after they talked they went for a swim. He assures Philip that Elena is anxious to get back to him. Just before he leaves, Philip sees the picture of the family. He asks who Jeremy is in the picture, but he also notices how closely Elena and Clay are sitting on the couch and that Elena has her hand on Clay’s knee. Logan aborts his plan to go to Stonehaven when a parcel arrives containing a silver rattle and a note saying “It’s a boy!” It’s clearly a threat, but Logan has no idea who could have known. He covers by telling Rachel that he let it slip to Elena.

Amber (Eve Harlow) is still being protected by Santos – or held prisoner. She is devastated by Cain’s death and vows revenge. She baits LeBlanc. After Santos locks LeBlanc up for hurting Elena, Amber promises to release him if he’ll bite her. Clearly not really concerned about getting out or not and wanting to hurt her, LeBlanc does bite her. By the end of the episode, we see her extremely misshapen body. Despite her assertions to the contrary, she was not strong enough to withstand the change. While she’s still alive at the end of the episode, I would assume that she is stuck half way through the change and dying. She is not likely to survive the change to join this new family.Daegan Fryklind confirmed in an interview that Amber did not survive the change. It underscores how special Elena is that even though she wasn't motivated to survive the change the way Amber was, Elena is still the only woman to ever survive it.

This was another strong episode with the theme of family woven throughout it. The fight sequences were quite spectacular. What did you think of the episode? Were you happy to see Elena and Clay together? Do you think there’s any way that Amber was able to successfully complete the change? Who do you think sent the rattle to Logan and Rachel? Do you think Jeremy orchestrated having Nick come to his rescue? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. Philip is being creepy/stalker boyfriend now. It just felt weird he was obsessing on her clothes in the video and when he went to Logan and then he was acting weird over the photo. I hope his story wraps up soon.

I hope Amber lives so we get a big Elena/Amber wolf fight.

I don't know if Jeremy let Nick kill him or if it was just luck that Nick showed up when he did.

WORST plot device ever was the Elena lookalike with the same clothes and hair. OMG, I cannot believe they filmed it and kept that scene in. It was worse than the book.

I'm always happy with an Elena/Clay scene.

I still think Santos sent the rattle to Logan. Santos has been keeping close tabs on all of them.

    I can't wait for tonight's new ep.

  2. I was only able to watch the episode once, so I wasn't able to check - but was the wrapping paper the same as Santos used before? Certainly his MO to send creepy presents.
I think the black goo coming out of Amber's mouth was a very bad sign...

  3. I get that people really want Elena and Clay to be together, but just because Philip is an obstacle to their union, doesn't make everything about him creepy or stalkery. I actually think he's been pretty patient and understanding about giving Elena her space, especially since she's also his fiancee. I also think that seeing her necklace with a pile of clothes, combined with all the strange things she's been doing would make any guy suspicious. It's clear that Philip and Elena aren't right for each other and that Elena and Clay are endgame, but I can't help but feel a bit sorry for Philip, who clearly has no clue about what he's getting into. Plus, I don't mind that they're showing the human angle at all. If we're really going to talk about creepy and possessive, I think Clay kind of wins that award. Viewers excuse his flaws because they ship him and Elena and he clearly loves her, but I can understand why Elena has a hard time forgiving him.

  4. I was so happy with the fireplace scene, i'm not a big fan of the 'will they/ wont they' plots used quite alot on shows these days. My hope is that they dance around it for a few more episodes, Philip is hurt and breaks up with Elena and Elena and Clay are back together for good by the end of the season. Elena is treating Clay pretty shite, he deserves a chance to make things better.

I don't want Amber to live, I like the idea that Elena is so special, that she was changed in such a calm environment by somebody she loved while the pack leader talked her through the change. Having Amber survive the bite after being bitten by a serial killer in a rushed stressed out way would totally ruin Elena being the only female wolf.

I'm so over Philip, not even going to mention him. I hope the Logan storyline is going somewhere since its pretty boring. I think it may lead to a pack divide once Jeremy finds out - possibly separating Clay and Elena once again since I think Clay will stay loyal to Jeremy and Elena will defend Logan.

  5. Thanks Lisa for the review….

    The episode was great.

Is it a wee blood thirsty of me, due to the fact, the scene I enjoyed the most was Nick snapping Koenig’s neck? The first thing I thought was; I wonder if Nick will now have a reputation since he killed the biggest bad of them all. It made me laugh when Daniel told Leblanc about Clay skinning the mutt; was this part of Clay’s myth as the enforcer? I know in the books, Clay joked he hardly had to do anything anymore because his reputation had gotten so overblown.

A few thoughts on Elena, I know others are very frustrated with her but me – I empathize with her character’s struggle. She’s never felt safe in her life; she’s had to face things a child should never have to go through. The first time she gives her heart to someone she wakes up in a cage. She tried to be a part of the Pack family but it scared her when she, without thought, killed a human. I get she wants to just live her life without all the danger the Pack brings but not able to totally let go of
    her family.

Something struck me during her scene under the car. I think the lookalike girl had a purpose. Elena starts to panic and the change triggers. Her vision pans over the lookalike. I think what got her
focused was knowing if she changed right then it made her vulnerable and then she’s dead. Seeing ‘herself’ lying there dead kicked in her defense mechanism so she could pull back the change.

    Some things of note:

Interesting the Pack picture hid Clay and Elena’s left hands. I kinda wanted Phillip to see the rings.

I don’t think Amber survived. Watching Elena’s change compared to Amber’s you can see Amber was fighting the pain whereas Elena let the pain take over.

Daniel, never stop being you. :-) You’re playing with the big boys now and I can see you slowly unraveling as things don’t go your way.

  6. Well said! I agree - I like Philip and in his defense, we've really had very little of his story.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I so agree about Elena being kept as special. I like that we see that Amber wants it and has also had a rough life, but still isn't able to survive the change. Possibly part of the equation is that Elena had Jeremy to talk her through it.
I really kind of like Philip - though clearly she's better off with Clay... I don't know that Logan will divide them. I think Elena does value the pack and its rules... We'll see!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Thanks! Not blood thirsty at all! Loved that too, and I'm betting he does get a rep! Love that detail from the books! Clay certainly does use his rep - love that.

I love Elena! And I completely agree with your assessment of her. I don't think she needed the look alike to focus, however. I think the threat to her was enough.

Great catch on the photo - I didn't catch that! But I only got to watch once and had to take notes furiously while doing so - though of course there's a picture of the picture here! LOL!
    Agreed about Amber and Daniel!

  9. ITA. Poor Philip has been nothing but supportive while Elena pulls farther and farther away, and just because he is finally getting suspicious, he's creepy? I get that everyone ships Clay, and I think the chemistry between him and Elena is undeniable, but really, it doesn't get more creepy than bitting her because that's the only way they could be together, what if she hadn't made it? he'd rather she die than being without her? That is the one thing that I have trouble getting past when it comes to Clay, to me that feels more like obsession than love. But I'm in the minority. Hopefully Clay will prove himself worthy further down the line...

  10. I liked this episode a lot. Jimmy Koenig as the antgonist was great. Daniel is only interested in getting his prize, Elena. Somehow I don't think the power behind the Mutts, is Karl Marstan.
I noticed Jeremy's dad has been mentioned more than once this episode (and mentioned in the previous episode). He sounds like formidable foe. I wonder if he is not behind the Mutt vs Pack battle. Is he alive?

I think Jeremy gave Nick that kill (Jeremy showed he is a strong, logical, an effective hand to hand fighter, when he beat Boggs at Stone Haven). Clay mentioned Malcom taught him, how to humanize and fight his opponents. So, again I wonder if its not Malcom as the puppet master.

Philip, if my significant other went swimming with their opposite sex cousin, it would be a red flag. It is not cool. Philip also saw Logan's picture of the pack, and I bet he thought, Jeremy was Clay, since Elena had her hand on his leg, and seemed to be leaning into him. Philip has better chemistry with his sister. He's really a handsome man.

Elena, puts it out there that Clay continuously hurts her, when what I see is the exact opposite. I really wish Clay could move on.

Amber, I knew she would be a nasty wolf. Ewww!
So I'm convinced there is more, Other to Elena, which makes her special. It also allowed her to stop changing into a wolf midway, through. Does somene else know Elena's true heritage?

I also wonder about Clay as well. If the heritage wolves make their first change around the age of sixteen, how was it that a seven year old, was able to handle the change and not die. Clay would have to be an anomaly in the wolf world. You have to wonder why an adult werewolf would bite a small child. Was it a Mutt?

  11. I agree with you about Malcom being the puppet master but maybe not what's going on with Santos. I also think he's James Williams. He made an interesting comment when he met Phillip. He said his board was interested in downsizing the company (Santos taking out the pack) but Williams was interested in expanding (maybe something to do with Logan and Rachel). So I think he sent the baby gift.
My take on Clay and Elena are, what we see is the Clay having been one year without her. We don't know the before Elena left Clay - if that makes sense. We don't know what prompted the animosity between them when she left. I still think it's more than 'you bit me and made me have to deal with all this ugliness'. Clay is trying to be a better man he said as much in a weak moment. Elena is doing her best to not think with her heart, she's bound and determined to not let Clay back in. Hence pushing him away with harsh words. In her mind, he can't be trusted with her heart so she's going to keep the wall up. She's struggling with it because now she has to actually deal with him face to face and the pull they have towards each other. I have to say I'm loving every facet of their relationship being played out. Good stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm also leaning towards Williams being the one to have sen the rattle.

There is definitely more to their animosity than Clay biting her. They tracked together for some time after she was bitten.
And I agree. She still has feelings for Philip even if she's confused now about Clay - I don't see her as being cruel and wanting to hurt either one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  13. We already know that Marsten answers to Santos. Whether Santos answers to someone else is unknown, but I don't think he does. I think you are correct in that all he really wants is Elena. We have been told Malcolm is dead, but I wonder if he might show back up. I'm leaning more towards him being aligned with Williams, however, if he is alive.
I would also be pretty creeped out by my significant other skinny dipping with their cousin! I don't remember being told that the first change is always at 16...

    ReplyDelete
  14. @stdwynwen, perhaps this William, is involved. I think whoever it is, knows Elena, is special, and I don't mean werewolf special. Even Cain knew this, and this is what I think is driving Santos. He wants his own pack, perhaps Elena babies would be super wolves, lol.
@Lisa, not sure where I got the sixteen years of age for the change. I thought they were in their teens, at the first change. Otherwise Logan would have been at Stone Haven long before he was a teen (Elena told Philip, that Logan was a teen when he was found). So, who sent him to Stone Haven as a teen? Who ever it was, had to know where they were sending Logan, and why.

  15. just a small query why do you bother writing reviews/recaps of a an episode that is a week old, everyone has seen, and are already onto the next episode? these would be better if they were the day of or just after the episode in question.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Why does it bother you? I responded today. Is there a law, prohibiting this?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Her thread has already generated 17 comments, so I think that most people appreciate her late recaps. Plus, it gives us an excuse to have a second wave of discussion while we wait impatiently for a new episode! I could be wrong but I do not think that this is a full time job for most reviewers and they are under no obligation to generate reviews immediately. The fact that they do it, is already a bonus.

    ReplyDelete
  18. For my part, I appreciate the extra time to get my thoughts together and have a decent conversation.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree. I know Lisa does other reviews/recaps here; and I'm sure has a life thrown in there too. :-)

  20. Good review of a typically problematic episode (e.g. the amazingly convenient homeless woman). I also liked the fight scene, though they need to find a body double for Jeremy who doesn't weigh, like, 50 pounds more than him. But yes, was Jeremy REALLY on the ropes, or did he deliberately set things up for Nick to swoop in and make the kill? Intriguing. On the other hand, what about the whole fair fight/leave him to me ethos that purportedly rules werewolf behaviour? And did't we see Elena manage to stop the change occurring in the first episode?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't think it's particularly creepy/stalkery to be concerned when you know your girlfriend lied to you about what she was doing, and whatever she WAS doing, she was doing it naked....

    ReplyDelete
  22. Right! He frickin' BIT her and turned her into a werewolf, to keep her! Talk about creepy! Sheesh!

    ReplyDelete
  23. The trope of the guy who "loves" a woman so much he's willing to kill her if the alternative is not being able to have her himself is a long-standing one, but that doesn't make it any less disturbing at its core, especially in 2014.

    ReplyDelete
  24. just a small query, but why do you bother commenting on a review posted a whole six days (!!!!) after the original episode aired? surely your time would be better spent commenting on the plethora of reviews posted before an episode is even on.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think it's just how the scenes were done that seemed weird, I mean, the family photo doesn't show anything and he's acting like she's sleeping with the entire family. I could see it if it was just a pic of her and Clay together, but it wasn't.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Elena didn't stop the change in the first ep. She barely made it out of the apartment and into the alley before it took over.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ah, okay. Thanks for the reminder!

    ReplyDelete
  28. As Carrigon said, she just delayed the change. But I think we ARE supposed to realize that she has better control over it than the men. Logan was surprised that she hadn't changed in so long remember. Really, my only issue with the episode was with the homeless woman...

    ReplyDelete
  29. As others have chimed in, I review as soon as I'm able. I try to watch the show at least twice before writing a review. I don't get screeners for most of the shows I review. I'm currently also reviewing Supernatural, Arrow, Revolution, Intelligence, Mind Games, The Walking Dead, Agents of Shield, and Glee, and I do polls for a number of other shows. This is an unpaid 3rd job for me. Most of my reviews take at least 3 or 4 hours to write - on top of the watching time, and then I have to format, add pictures, etc. I get the reviews up as soon as I am able, but sometimes that's later than I'd like. I feel that having it up close to the next airing also gives people a chance to recap before the new episode. If you'd like to pay me so this is my #1 job and provide me with screeners, I'd be happy to post the day of... ;)

  30. Logan was also bitten though, right? And wasn't Clay bitten as well? It is more shocking that someone would bite a young child like Clay. If Logan were already 16 when he was bitten that doesn't seem quite as shocking... Clearly, I need to start a flow chart! I just picked up the book (or more accurately my husband got it for me), so I'll soon be able to use that as a reference!

    ReplyDelete
  31. The homeless woman plot device totally didn't work. If she hadn't been dressed just like Elena, even then, there should have been a few more homeless people there. Would have been a bit more believable.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes! Or have her not dressed exactly the same with the same ponytail!

    ReplyDelete
  33. The fact that in this day and age this is still the case, makes me a little sick, I have to say.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Logan is a hereditary wolf. Clay and Elena, are the only bitten wolves in the Pack.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Lisa, Logan is a hereditary wolf. Clay and Elena, are the only bitten wolves in the Pack.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Clay wanted to be bitten! His back story isn't in Bitten, you'll need to check out Savage in the Men of the Otherworld anthology

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ah. Why did I think he was bitten? Again... need that flowchart! Thanks for the clarification!

    ReplyDelete
  38. He was bitten as a small child, right? Clay found him when he was only 6 or 7, right? Was he being abused and wanted to be able to fight back/run away? That would help to shed light on why he bit Elena... ???

    ReplyDelete
  39. Its actually a fairly good insight into Clay himself. He wasn't being abused - you get the impression that his upbringing was far from ideal, and that his parents are somewhat ambivalent towards their kids, and he was a bit of a loner.
He loved Elena, he took her back to Stonehaven hoping to convince Jeremy that she could share his life, and he wanted to tell her the truth about his being a werewolf. He did not plan to turn her. Jeremy sent Clay away and then proceeded to try and convince Elena that she should leave Clay. Clay changed hoping that Elena would recognise him as the wolf, and I guess that if she didn't freak out he could show Jeremy that it would work. It was apparent that Elena didn't recognise him as the wolf, and Clay just gently bit her, more in desperation and I guess panic at the idea of losing her. The back story appears in an anthology of novella/short stories (Tales of the Otherworld, I think), and really details well the growth of the relationship and bond between Elena and Clay. Their relationship wasn't perfect, Elena recognised that some of Clay's behaviours were not quite "right", but Clay promised her that he would explain everything when they were at Stonehaven. Yes it was controlling, but for Clay he was just trying to keep his mate, he absolutely worshipped and adored her - for him she was/is essential to his being.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Ah! Excellent! Thanks so much for the explanation. I'll keep an eye out for the book too!
