Beauty and the Beast - Episode 2.15 - Catch Me if You Can - Review

5 Mar 2014

Ha!  At last!  After months of build-up and many roadblocks along the way, Catherine and Vincent finally kissed once again.  I think garage doors around the world were probably opening and closing due to the frequency of the fangirl squeeing that took place at 9:58 or so on Monday night.  I'm also doing a little bit of this:

So the BatB writers definitely took an ambitious path this season, first having Vincent forced into a dark and heavy situation that led to some harsh actions isolating him from Catherine.  Then once Vincent finally started to get back to being himself, Cat was behaving in a wildly out of character way, continuously disavowing her feelings for Vincent while taking up with the increasingly whiney Gabe.  Was this a brilliant dichotomy of sending both Vincent and Cat to a dark place just to bring them back together in a satisfying way?  Sometimes it felt that way, and sometimes it was just frustrating, more so with regard to Cat's conduct than anything else.  But there's no question that despite my and other viewers' quibbles in this area, the season has been bursting with fascinating, unpredictable, exciting stuff.  Now all of the often beautiful, often slightly baffling madness has sent us hurtling back into VinCat territory, and it's not a moment too soon.

I'll be using some lyrics from Jessie Ware's "Wildest Moments" to supplement my review this week.  Truth be told, I've had this song earmarked for use once Vincent and Catherine started to come back together.  It centers on a love very similarly based on passion and destiny, hampered by a fear of destructiveness, yet incapable of not caving to its own power.  Because ultimately, the worst moments are all worth it in exchange for the wildest moments.

"You and I, blurred lines,
We come together every time
Two wrongs, no rights,
We lose ourselves at night

And from the outside, from the outside,
Everyone must be wondering why we try,
Why do we try?"*

In "Catch Me if You Can," much of the action revolved around the gang trying to capture Sam and bring him to justice.  Following on from his capture of Muirfield orphan Xavier last week, Sam now had a new bargaining chip, since he'd injected the poor bastard with beast serum and had him chained up at home.  I thought Vincent did an excellent job of tracking Sam and dealing with the ridiculous comments he got from the disapproving Gabe and Cat, who were beginning to sound like carbon copies of each other.  It took a lot of guts for Vincent to use his beast abilities, and he only did it because it was the sole option for getting Sam and preventing more of the villain's mischief.  In fact, thanks to this work on Vincent's part, the scoobies were actually able to find out about Xavier's capture in the first place.

I guess Cat had just let herself drift to a place where Gabe was the crutch letting her deny her feelings for Vincent, and agreeing with her new boyfriend in such an incredibly passive way about pretty much everything has been an extension of that.  It's a protective measure against another broken heart, but it's a fruitless and hurtful method for everyone involved.  It's sad that Cat felt enough pain to use this method of intense serial monogamy to escape acknowledging her real feelings.  I'm just glad she couldn't keep it up forever!

It was too funny when Gabe actually had the nerve to show up at Vincent's place, pouring himself a drink no less, to try and talk Vincent into staying away from Cat...for honor's sake.  I literally had to say out loud to the t.v., "yeah, I'm sure Vincent's gonna get right on that."  In one of several excellent callbacks to last week's superb dream sequences, Vincent also finally said "Screw you, Gabe" in real life.  Very satisfying!

We also had some more pitch perfect moments of sage wisdom from J.T. this week, further cementing the touching and humorous bromance between him and Vincent.  From the gummy worms and investigating to J.T. assuring Vincent that it's wrong to try and fully suppress his beast side or to do anything merely as part of a plan to impress Cat (I completely agree), the J.T. scenes were wonderful.  I wish Tess had anything close to this level of great material lately, but I'm hoping the show will get back to giving her more to do than dispense rather confused romantic advice to Cat.

Given the fact that Vincent and Catherine are incapable of staying out of each other's way, it stood to reason that they ended up in her car together...quite soon after Cat assured Gabe she was planning to avoid Vincent.  Teeheehee.  The car crash aftermath was a wonderful combination of cute, funny, and sexy as Vincent and Cat argued in very close physical quarters.  Once Gabe called and expressed his chagrin over their being together, the awkward and hilarious scene got even more delightfully absurd.  I also enjoyed that Vincent got the last word on beasting out, successfully facilitating their speedy exit from the vehicle without any outsiders noticing his powers.  It's awesome to see Vincent embrace the beast side of himself without guilt, just being the badass hero he is and standing up for himself in the process after Cat and Gabe's criticisms.

Also, this exchange?

Cat: "What are you doing here?"
Vincent: "What are you doin' here?"
Cat: "I asked you first."
Vincent: "What are you, like six? I'm trying to look for Sam's next victim."

So adorable and classic.

"Wait on, thunder sky,
Wherever there's smoke, there'll soon be fire
What could bring bad luck,
I've been looking at you too much..."*

The climactic scene with Vincent trying to save Xavier from Sam's evil plotting while forced to do so in an oxygen-free zone was fabulously nail-biting.  What makes Sam such an effective villain is that he's simply let go of any sense of morality outside of his own brand of justice for his son.  In his own mind, he's completely right to kill his way to some kind of answers (we still don't really know who the culprits are that he's after, but they must be fairly terrible if they're worse than Sam).  So it came as no surprise that he was willing to murder Xavier and Vincent via bomb just to protect his agenda.

However, we finally got to see The Old Catherine back in action once she figured that out.  This connected nicely to the reemergence of The Old Vincent in the police station hostage situation a few episodes back.  After all, here we finally had Cat kicking ass and taking names with no hesitations at the notion of Vincent's life being in danger.  Let's not forget my favorite Cat moment from this week: "if Vincent's dead, you're dead."

"In the middle of it,
We walk, we walk the line
Looking back I miss it,
Our wildest moments
Are you thinking what if,
What if we ruined it all?
My wrecking ball"*

Hence, and in addition to the semi-repulsed reaction she had to Gabe's offering her his key earlier in the episode, we were clued in majorly that Cat couldn't stay away from Vincent.  Even as she numbly went through the motions of repeating to Gabe that she's with him, not Vincent, clearly that was no longer the case.  The tenuous connection between Cat and Gabe has been worn thin as his demands on her only emphasize her inability to disconnect from her epic ex.

"Baby in our wildest moments,
We could be the greatest, we could be the greatest,
Baby in our wildest moments,
We could be the worst of all"*

Fantastically, the final scene was a sort of real life do-over of Cat's dark dream from last week, ending in a development that was anything but nightmarish.  Catherine went to Vincent's to explain that she had to stay away from him now that Sam was apprehended and they basically have no excuse to hang out anymore.  Yet, perhaps she wasn't quite ready for the sight of Vincent's huggably cozy bathrobe and that cutely pathetic little Smart Ones or whatever he was microwaving for himself.  Because the more Cat tried to back away from him in words, the closer they got as intimate looks were inevitably exchanged, betraying the truth.  I absolutely love that Vincent's done playing the polite card in listening to the never-ending tapestry of lies that Cat has been weaving lately.  He agreed to her terms, but then swept her up in a steamy embrace, one to which she had zero objections.

What did you think of this week's episode?  What would you like to see happen in next week's BatB?  Share your thoughts in the comments!

Thank you for tyhis awesome review, I always love your reviews and so positive too. Next week: I sincerely hope Gabe gets dumped, and VINCAT gets closer together! Also that Tess supports Vincent for a change ;)

Thanks! I agree- what Cat and Gabe have doesn't even feel like a real relationship; it's so forced and awkward. Hope she ends it next week! And it would be nice to see Tess be more positive about Vincent and get off Team Gabe. It was all well and good when Tess was supporting Gabe trying to be a better person, but having her ship "Gat" or whatever is a bridge too far. :)

I loved the kiss too! I know the circumstances are far from perfect, but it was still so great to see that VinCat passion back. Hope the rest of Season 2 is more on that track.

  5. Loved your review! Would like to add that Vincent's saving Xavier's life was his greatest achievement in regaining his humanity. His only thoughts at that moment was purely to save one other life..Following that, he turned to Cat and asked if she was ok...never thinks of himself....unlike #Grumpy Gabe

  10. love your review and love that you are positive about what is happening. Yes we know its less than perfect, but lets face it, what path to destiny is. The scene with them both in the car after it was tboned by Xavier was classic, comical and filled with Vincat chemistry and I love when Catherine said "too close" and Vincent turned and whispered, I think he meant Sam. But that last scene, the kiss, I have written my own review about it:
"My breath catches in my throat and I can’t seem to breathe. I just can’t quite describe how this makes me feel. I am choked up, I am fixated and I’m drowning in the love and the romance of the scene to which I am glued. I am addicted to watching the kiss, the reactions of Vincent to rewind to see the reaction of Catherine, to rewind to catch that moment when Vincent gives into his
need to hold her lips to his, not wanting to release them in fear that she might walk away. To rewind to see Catherine almost reel back in acknowledgement that she is kissing Vincent back until she looks into his eyes again only to lose herself to her desire, to refocus on his lips, to lean herself back into kiss him again, to touch his lips with hers, to taste his mouth again.

I see resignation in Vincent’s first kiss; almost a subconscious acknowledgment that this could be his last kiss which is almost as powerful as his visceral awareness that their last kiss will only ever be the one exchanged before the death of either of them. I see love screaming from one to another, I see past mistakes regretted and current situations needing to be dispelled, but I
certainly don’t see any fight to stay away between them. I see instinct, carnal awareness, destiny staring at me off the TV screen.

I don’t see a wounded man fighting to find his humanity and I don’t see a woman cheating on her “boyfriend”. All I see are two people under compulsion of their deeper connection, whom have acknowledged their mistakes, be they current mistakes, past made mistakes, or about to be
made mistakes, forgive each other, instinctively fight to be together."

Sorry for the long comment, but this is what I see in that last scene :) Love your review Virginia - spot on

  14. The highlight for me was how Vincent finally made peace with himself and let go of his flawed belief that it didn't work out with Cat because of his other side.
Vincent was the star of the dungeon scene but I couldn’t help notice Cat’s reaction. Her realisation that Vincent’s heroism, his goodness, all the qualities she fell in love with are back and the fact that he is still ALIVE; it was tragically poetic. I can go on and on about the very telling embrace that followed. I know that Gabe was way out of line but seriously, can you blame him for being insecure? Look at that hug, look at how these two cling to each other as if for dear life itself. How can he ever compete with that?
And how can he even think of asking Cat to stay away from Vincent after seeing her like that? Does he really expect Cat to function without Vincent? I’m not even talking about Cat obviously still being in love with Vincent, it’s about how he is the only one who keeps her going; whether it’s her adoration for a protective Vincent, her search for a missing Vincent, or her grief over a Vincent who chose to let go of his humanity, it’s all VINCENT (kinda makes me wonder what exactly Cat discovered about her individual self since she is clearly still defined by Vincent but that’s a debate for another day).

That last scene was so well done; their eyes spoke volumes. Maybe it’s just me but they were literally like ‘I love you, you love me, why are we doing this to each other?’ And it was high time Vincent put on a 'Screw Gabe, this is MY girl' attitude.
Cat is so messed up right now that I would’ve liked her to take the stand that she is not with Gabe. All of his controlling has been playing havoc on her, pressurising her to ‘do the right thing’. With the kiss, I saw her just listen to her heart, a voice she has been silencing a long long time now. And this is why it didn’t feel like cheating. I really feel that before any man, she first needs to be true to herself. She has so much bottled up inside of her that I feel scared that she will succumb under all the emotional build up. I have my judgements against sleeping with another man while in a relationship but I guess I need to swallow that and take this as a baby step in making her realise where her heart truly lies.

I am a bit let down seeing her initial reaction in the promo. Doing terrible things does not make someone a terrible person if they’re willing to right the wrong. But for Cat, that is not about admitting it was a mistake. It is to (apologetically) break up with Gabe and then do some serious introspection.
But anyway, I like that this has given Vincent a heads up about Cat's actual feelings. He is willing to fight with everyone, including Cat herself, to make them see that her heart still belongs to him. Hopefully, he can knock some sense into her and make her deal with her emotions for once.

  22. Thank you for the review. I saw many of the same things though I am not as forgving with who Cat has become. She has become the person she did not want Vincent to be. The self serving, doesn't matter who I hurt, hippocritical version of herself. Her sole purpose in trying to get Sam was so she could move on with her ridiculous relationship with Gabe, who is slowly unraveling at the edges, as he knows that Cat could never love him like she loves Vincent. Cat is still trying to convince herself that is what is she wants and needs in her life but the person who really grounds Cat and makes her who she is is Vincent. That is what they do for each other, which has made this journey this season for them to find out who they are individually a little tedious for me because who they really are are each other. Cat totally forgot about the other human in the situation, Xavier, something that she berated Vincent for for the first 12 episodes. She is also letting someone control her like someone controlled Vincent. Cat is letting her beast side control her and she no longer is the judgemental person she was with Vincent, because now Cat herself is judge and jury.
I am hoping against hope that 216 will see the end of Gabe/Cat and some sweeter Vincat moments, even though the two have lots of talking to do. Going into the hiatus with Gabe/Cat together would be the death of me and the show, IMO. But going into it with Cat realizing she does love Vincent but needing some time to deal with how she needs to heal and then how the two will continue their relationship would be satisfying and a good way to go into the long tortuous 2 month wait.

  23. Great review, i loved the episode for a few reasons. Vincent finally is embracing who he is now, JT is an amazing friend, the undeniable connection between VinCat - car scene, Cat not staying away from Vincent after everyone that is close to her is telling her she should. I can see why Cat was driven to cheat on Gabe since everyone in her life is trying to control her and has put so many questions in her head about what is good for her. Gabe was stupid to get involved with someone that clearly has such stronge feelings for someone else and then to try and force them to break their friendship off is what caused the cheating. CAN'T FIX STUPID!

Loved the scene between JT & Vincent in the bar especially when he grabed the pool que to make Vincent talk. Oh to have a friend like JT would be amazing. I also loved the fact the end scene was a combination of both dreams from previous week. Cat coming over to break off their friendship but instead of killing him it was like Vin dream where they kissed. AWSOME!

  26. Virginia, your reviews are always a breath of fresh air. I appreciate how you always understand what the writers want us to take away from every episode. It always makes me happy to see that I am not the only one who gets it. I love season 2 just as much as season 1, the writers have done an amazing job this season. If you really think about, the only thing different from last season, is there's just much more drama this season than last season. All the difficulties and the fear that they have and face in their relationship has been amplified this season. I was so happy when Vincent told Gabe to "screw himself", I have been thinking that to myself for awhile now. I'm happy to see Vincent thinking about what he wants, which is Catherine and fighting for her. Now all Catherine has to do is get her head to want what her heart truly wants, which is Vincent. The VinCat kiss at the end was amazing and brought me back to last year,

    ReplyDelete
  27. when after the whole Alex fiasco, Catherine said to Vincent, "You can't control your heart, damn thing just does what it wants." Thank you again Virginia for always totally being in sync with your reviews, love them and you!

  28. Thanks for the nice review! lav it! I'm loving all the VinCat moments in this episode! the car scene was fantastic! comical! and the finale scene was oh l'ala...VinCat kiss!! Hotee!! finally after the long wait! feel sorry for Gabe but he needs to move on n give a life Cat to her handsome Beast Vincent!!

  29. Wow Janeen, tnk u for such an emotional detailed description of a gem of a kiss!

  30. Jareen, you're always so positive and I agree that the chemistry between Cat & Vincent is off the charts, even when they were acting like the bickersons in the car - yes moments after she promised Gabe she'd keep away from Vincent. VinCat have more chemistry when they're fighting than any of the most "passionate" moments between Cat & Gabe - they have about as much chemistry as a brother and sister - its downright icky. How she can opt for Gabe over Vincent even for a second is beyond me especially now that Vincent is following his heart and doing what he believes to be right.

I wish that the writers would have Cat do something similar - break things off with Gabe, but not jump right back with Vincent. I want her to find her self (the Cat from season 1) and then reconnect with Vincent when she can live happy on her own.

I give the same prescription for Tess - I want her back and feisty and the focus on Gabe has really diminished her to a Gabe cheerleader - Nina and Kristen are so awesome and last year I really admired these two strong women but this year the writers have really uncut their wonderful characters so I hope that now that Vincent is finding "who I am" that the same journey is coming for both Cat & Tess.

One more beef - they've completely dropped the JT&T story. While I love that the JT and Vincent reborn bromance (as I always do when he's in the ep), they've left him hanging with Tess.

So I hope Cat makes an affirmative decision on Gabe in ep 16 - don't know how we're going to get through the next 3 months. We need to keep roaring for a season 3, and there won't be any shows to keep us engaged every week. Hopefully the writers and cast will post updates and spoilers to keep us going during the hiatus.

Thank you Virginia! Lovely review. You are so in sync with what I and many more see in this show.

About Gabe. I hate how he patronizes Vincent about being a beast, and himself not anymore. Yeah; Vincent is still a beast because of you, you bastard! Had you not tried to kill Catherine and VIncent, he would have been cured now. Your actions forced Catherine to give Vincent the vaccine that forced the beast to return! And you have the guts to blame Vincent for what he is???? You are lucky to be alive, enjoy that, and leave Catherine and Vincent alone. You are a slimy slug, and deserves no respect at all!

  35. Awesome review:) Nice to see Cat coming back to her old self again. I was happy with the new direction on season two but, and it's not that I didn't want Cat to date anyone else, it was so forced between she and Gabe and just not believable. It would be better and more realistic if they had given her a new love interest, someone who was the perfect guy and had no ties to this beast thing. Watching her frolic around with Gabe was honestly yuck! If she was frolicking around with Sendhill R that is another story but not Gabe:-) I love Sendhill adorable smile:-). Obviously a very talented actor. I would like to see the VinCat relationship have a positive end on ep16 , that being the last episode before long break, leaving us fans in a more positive place with the show /writers and look forward to the next chapter for the remainder of the season, or maybe what i really want to say is enough, now please move on.

  36. Thanks Virginia ~ always enjoy your positive reviews ~ the fact that you also used Wildest Moments is a sweet bonus! Season 2 has been one crazy ride so far ~ that's for sure ~ I have loved every moment of Vincent's arc in Season 2 even when he was more Beast than man but I find it hard to show the same sympathy for Cat's lack of understanding towards him especially when I look back at Season 1 and recall her loving words of "who you are, it makes everything worth it" The most positive interpretation I have right now for her confusion in Season 2 is that she is completely adrift without Vincent to anchor her! I wish she had taken her "me" time instead of rebounding with worthless GaG. Can't wait to see the last of him! As things stand in the loop de loops of our VinCat world, I will savor every bit of this giant VinCat crumb 215 left us with til Cat comes to her senses ~ sooner rather than end of season for my own sanity ~ claws crossed!!!
What I want to see next week
The preview seems to suggest that I may be screaming at Cat again ~ the lady doth protest too much ugh! So I want Vincent to kidnap her again and have his beast way with her til she says "G*** who? Also I would jump for joy if Sam injected beast serum into G again ~ poetic justice ~ followed up by a much deserved buttkicking from Vincent! :o)

Thanks! I completely agree about Gabe...I really want to keep liking his character the way I did at first, as the actor is so wonderful and charismatic. I hope to see Gabe get out of his current rut and do some more engaging stuff after the inevitable breakup with Cat. :)

  42. I loved your review - It is how I feel about this episode. I loved VinCat's scenes, mostly the intense cuddle and the kisses on final. I loved JT too - that big friend!
The episode would be perfect, excepting some actions from Cat. I feel she is completely lost, alone and still trusting on Gabe "OMG". For me, only Vincent can help her - "it's so good imagine that only he can help her"
I hope the writhers don't transform Cat as an imoral woman. Gabe off!

  45. Thank you Maureen, I agree with most of the above comments but yours was absolutely right, and given the fact that next week will be the last episode before the spring hiatus, I would like to share these few points:
    - In S3, I wish to see Vincent in a steady job, source of income. Who is paying for this boathouse now?? Going back to his medical work would be just what he needs, to continue helping people!!
    - I wonder what the CIA has to say about that explosion in the top secret bunker??? There must be a follow up, or will the writers just let it go, like Vincent's military status now????
    - I am still waiting for Vincent's nephew to try and connect with his uncle, now that V. is a public celebrity!!!
    - I cannot imagine seeing Cat again in Gabe's place!!!! She has been rather insecure, easily manipulated by Gabe and completely ignoring her destiny with Vincent throughout S2, and it is about time to have the old Catherine back
    - I would love to see Agent Landon in one more episode, at least. She might be able to help Sam redeem himself????? In some ways, she was the opposite of Cat: well-grounded, solid as a rock although Sam has been presumed dead for more than 5 years!!!
    - JT & Tess - where are they?? We need consistency in this show!!!
    - I still feel that there is a dark side to Gabe, may be he is/was involved with the group who experimented on Sam's son??? while trying to find a cure for himself .....
    - The chemistry between Vincent and Catherine is magical, and JR is a brilliant actor, so please let them be together, your fans have had enough seeing you apart this season

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thank you for writing a positive review! I'm tired of seeing / reading reviews saying that Catherine is a cheater...or that JT's pep talks are annoying...or that Tess virtually has no character development. I'm glad someone isn't as picky and understands the quality of a good show. :)

    Thanks!!! :)

  48. No poetic justice would be Cat having to inject Gabe in order to save Vincent - haven't worked it out but I think that would be the ultimate twist....

  50. Great review! Thanks!! :) While I am still frustrated with the snails pace of Cat's character development and the continuation of the Gabefest, I did enjoy the ep. More than previous ones, but less than the stellar ones of S1. It did have some fantastic moments...eg: car scene! LOL That was hilarious! It had just the right amount of awkwardness, tension, chemistry etc. WELL DONE!! *claps hands* I loved the whole rescue scene where V refused to give up on X while Cat watched V be the man he once was. And the HUG! <3 Gabe and his ultimatums really got on my nerves again....and not in a good way! I really can not wait for the day Cat gets her backbone BACK!! I also loved the kiss and the "talk" at the end, but I really wish it hadn't involved being unfaithful. Yes, Cat's heart truly belongs to V but she is still with Yuk, I mean Gabe, so cheating is cheating.....that's NEVER a good way to start (restart) a relationship that already has baggage of it's own! Grrrr! But while I wish things had played out differently, I am glad for some VinCat forward movement. Let's hope they don't completely drop all this momentum in the next ep!!

  51. wow I would so totally pay big bucks to see that happen!!

Gabe keeps bashing Vincent and belittling him and his humanity every chance he gets, but he keeps forgetting that Vincent *wanted* to stay human for Cat, and *couldn't* because he needed his beast side to stay alive and save his girl from *Gabe*!!!! the same girl that he's now all too happy to have and manipulate! MORON! if it hadn't been for his selfishness and what he utimately did to Vincent, voluntarily or not, he wouldn't stand a chance with Cat, she wouldn't even have given him the time of day or just *looked* his way! he's lucky Vincent is the man he is, a lesser man, or if he was really such a beast, would have killed him long ago!

  52. Gabe is a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off. I want evil Gabe back!

  53. I love all those questions and comments. I have one more that has been really bugging me. Sam keeps alluding to destroying the people that killed his son and no one seems to know who they are. First I cannot believe Gabe who has the answer to everything cannot figure it out with his every present boxes of files. But why can't they ask Agent Landon who it was? Did I miss that somewhere along the lines?

  54. You are absolutely right, and that is one more reason why we need Agent Landon for at least one more episode... Again, consistency!!!

  55. It was so lovely to watch that last VinCat scene. They can´t let each other alone. Their love is eternal. #Beasties have waited so long for them to come together and now we really got more than we expected.
What happens next? The writers always surprise us so it´t impossible to guess. It will be awesome. That is for sure.
But how we shall endure the long hiatus is a big question. Please let us have Beauty and the Beast back soon and give us a season 3 "Who are we?"

Yes I too am hoping that Tess, as Cat's best friend will support what Cat really wants and that's for Cat to be with the man that she truly loves Vincent! Monday's episode (minus Gabe) was almost like the good old days of VinCat

You and me both!!! I so loved last night's episode.. I fear that Gabe is at it again, Right after Cat and Vincent have a great night together the police suddenly show up at Cat's door with a warrant for Vincent's arrest!?!?!?

  60. Wonderful review! Thanks for sharing. I hope Cat realizes she doesn't really have feelings for Gabe. So he has money, big deal, money isn't everything. She has a connection with Vincent that she will never have with Gabe.
