Beauty and the Beast – 2.16 – About Last Night – Review: Doesn’t this all seem vaguely familiar?

‘Doesn’t this all seem vaguely familiar?’

‘In your heart, in your bones, no matter how silly you know it is, you feel that everything has been leading to this, all the secret arrows were pointing here, the universe and time itself crafted this long ago, and you are just now realizing it, you are now just arriving at the place you were always meant to be.’

― David Levithan, Every Day

The Recap & Review

Title: Catch Me If You Can | Written by: Melissa Glenn | Directed by: Stuart Gillard

Synopsis: CAT AND VINCENT ARE REMINDED OF HOW IN LOVE THEY ONCE WERE — In order to prevent Sam (guest star Tom Everett Scott) from destroying a large group of people, Cat (Kristin Kreuk) and Vincent (Jay Ryan) are forced to revisit a romantic destination from their past, which enables them to come to a new realization about what they mean to one another.

My thought on this week’s writer…

I was utterly shocked that they allowed a brand spanking new writer be the one to write this episode. Although, I was largely relieved to learn that Brad Kern wasn’t doing the honors to be honest. But at the same time a little sad that Sherry and Jenny weren’t doing the honors either. But I will say that it seems as though Ms. Glenn has at least seen some of the first season as saw light touches of the formula they often used in season one. First instance, start with VinCat, end with VinCat. Second instance, pull in the best friends to offer advice. Third instance put Cat and Vincent in a dangerous situation while looking pretty. The list goes on but I digress… I found the dialog to be average (and a little bit too repetitive) but the overall pacing and plot was right on track, especially since she was the one who had to clean up the mess has been going on all season long. All in all she did a pretty solid job and it’s always nice to have another woman around on the writing staff.

My thoughts on this week’s director…

Stuart Gillard is one of my top five favorite directors for Beauty and the Beast (and that shouldn’t be a surprise or well-kept secret). He always manages to bring out that extra something special in all the actors that sparkle on the screen. His use of light and space gives an epic feel to even the smallest and most unimportant of scenes. He’s another director that isn’t afraid to let a scene breathe and meander in the spaces between. My favorite scene for directorial aesthetic distinction would have to be the masquerade ball.
=======================================================================================================

Cat – Cat realizes that her heart wants what it wants and that it’s definitely not Gabe. I do like that Cat finally brought up something that has bugged me about their relationship to no end: Vincent’s need to always try and save Cat even when she doesn’t need it. Cat was strong, decisive (eventually) and expressed herself. Cat was open with Tess and allowed Tess to offer her some advice. I like this Cat, she’s finally starting to feel like the old Cat again and that’s a Cat I can get behind.

Gabe – Well, Gabe is now truly a waste of space. We spent all that time on his redemption only to have it wiped away (at least seemingly, because if he wasn’t the one to drop a dime on Vincent, then who did?). Even now, with VinCat back together, he’s still going to be hanging around sucking up screen time. Just kill him or let him ride off into the sunset.

JT – JT was perfectly in character and on fire. He got all the best lines and gets a chance to save the day, not one but twice. Once with the antidote and then again by cracking the NSA thumb drive. It also appears he got the girl to boot.

JTnT – Finally, some resolution. Tess said what most of us have been thinking about the JTnT ship but I’m glad she finds JT just as charming as I do and is willing to take a shot. I don’t think it will work out for those two in the end (their loyalties lie in two different places and it think it was foreshadowed pretty heavily in this episode) but I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts.

Sam Landon – I just wanted Sam to die. I’m sorry, I’m not sorry. I never could connect with the story of Sam. His body toll is just way too high. They made him into a super villain at the expense of making Team Beastie just look completely stupid. I did like that they gave him a moment to shine when instead of killing the man he was after, he just knocked him out and stole his pin.

Tess – Tess finally wasn’t wallpaper! She was integral to the story. She got a chance to offer Cat some advice, be a part of the case as well as kiss a boy and let him know he she felt.

Vincent – It is now Vincent who is deeply invested in their relationship and is having to deal with a wishy washy love interest who has options. It is now Vincent being the one jumping through hoops. I have to say I rather like this turn of events. Vincent was smart, funny and charming in this episode. I was getting glimpses of the old Vincent and I loved it.

VinCat – Well, their happily ever after might have been ripped away at the last second (again) but at least they are officially back together and as Vincent said, they are better together than they are apart and in my mind there’s nothing they can’t overcome when they’re together.

Grade: B+

• For the 5th week in a row, the reigning champion, Vincent! He was funny, vulnerable, proactive, honest and open while still maintaining some of those season 1 flaws (overprotectiveness, namely)

Best Character Interactions
• JT & Vincent

• Cat: No, I had this perfectly under control; my control. You obviously haven’t changed at all. I’m not some damsel in distress; I don’t need a knight in shining armor.

Highlights

Favorite Moments

• Sweeping declarations
• Being pushed together only to be torn apart

Theme
• It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.

Biggest Surprises of the Episode
• Vincent’s arrest
• Tess tells JT how she feels
• This was a super funny episode and I totally wasn't expecting that.

WTF Moment
• Gabe tells Cat he loves her (I don’t think he means it, I think it was a manipulative ploy)

Burning Questions
1. What happened to the gem and will it ever come back into play?
2. What happened to the beast skeleton and will it ever come back into play?
3. Will the existence of beast go public (there are SO many people who know now)?
4. I thought ALL the beast related deaths were chalked up Agent Reynolds?
5. How will Vincent get out of being charged with murder (he is guilty of the crime)?

Polls

Farewell for now…
Well, Beasties, this is it! I just want you to know that I’ll miss you and hope to see each and every one of you back here, sometime around the middle of May. It has meant so much to me that you guys have come to my humble review week after week. You guys leave awesome comments and help me see BATB in a new light and bring up things I either forgot or didn’t catch. I just want to thank you for making a warm and welcoming (for the most part) BATB community here on Spoiler TV.

Be sure to check my blog from time to time as I will be throwing trend events, writing ‘Retro Recaps’ about season 1 and conducting polls to pass the time. I want to encourage you to participate in all the trend events and campaigns aimed at saving BATB that you can. If you follow me on Tumblr you can look forward to tons of screencaps and gifs that I plan on making to help pass the time during these two months.

If you need something to pass the time be sure to subscribe to the podcast and send in email as we will still be discussing all thing Beauty and the Beast during the hiatus.

I sincerely feel that we really have a shot at getting renewed (Star Crossed numbers aren’t so hot, The 100 is not a suited match for Arrow and The Tomorrow People will not cut it on Mondays) but we must stay focused and not get complacent. We have to roar louder than ever before if want to save our show.

Lastly and most importantly, be kind to one another, stay steadfast in your determination and don’t forget to roar loud, hard and often!

  2. I think this time Vincent was really good at one liners..."I was going to say 7" or "Catherine why are you so beautiful?" I liked them...Thanks for the review!

  3. Thanks so much. I'm going to miss all my Beasties as much as I'll miss the show! But I have a few things planned for Beasties during the hiatus.

  5. Nice review Lilith. Loved this episode from start to finish. I will be streaming the episodes during hitaus. Do you know when the show will return? The promo for "Arrested" doesn't specify a date. Thank you.

  7. Thanks for another great review, Lilith. Can't wait to see what you have planned for the hiatus!

  8. Thanks Lilith for your usual tell it like you see it review, which doesn't always make Beasties happy but share many of our thoughts. I really liked the return to the light, tho dark elements, funny and endearing moments like we continuously had in season 1. And I am glad too it was written by Melissa . I am sorry but I do not feel Brad Kerns has ever really got this show, tho I have
Iiked some of the action, etc. the true essence of the love story has been sorely missing this season, tho again some won't agree. Loved the Vincat scenes all the way thru and the return to a certain extent of the old Cat. Again JR knocked it out of the park. I hope we don't have to wait too Long to see resolution to the current state of the arrest. And for sure I am ready for the lessening of Gabe. As always love the choice of music. I am really looking forward to our last 6 episodes as being pure VinCat and working thru their relationship and challenges together, like in SO 1! Hope to stay in contact with you over hiatus.

  9. The middle of May is what I've been hearing and I'm not even sure if it will still be on Mondays.

  10. Thanks, I loved getting to know what makes the Beasties tick and I enjoy reading the comments of those who actually like the direction that season has gone. It would be a terrible place if we all liked the same thing for the same reason. Variety is the spice of life. I'm just glad it looks as though the show is back on track and trying to get back to the essence of what the show is about VinCat aka Beauty and her beast, LOL! Two months of no BATB will undoubtedly make me soft and nostalgic of the past 16 episodes.

  11. Thank you for your good review Lillith, long break, but we'll survive :)

  12. Thanks for your nice review ! I love this episode . It was great to have the old strong Cat back and this new Vincent - charming and funny- is awesome. Good job Jay ! JT and Tess really rock in this episode. Can't wait till May !

  13. Great review ! Thanks !
I LOVED this part "Even now, with VinCat back together, he’s still going to be hanging around sucking up screen time. Just kill him or let him ride off into the sunset".
I agree 100%. I thought that having Gabe back when he should had stayed dead was bad enough , but when I watched him getting more and more screen time each week to finally end being Cat's boyfriend, Ugh...What a way to kill the show.
Finally VinCat are back , something that should had happened long time ago , but please now just kill Gabe or send him away. Enough of him already ! Bring back Beauty and the Beast ! Please !

  14. Thanks, I'm really glad Beasties have something to rally around, especially since it's VinCat back together against the world because this next two months is going to be hell but we Beasties can handle it together.

  15. It was a pleasure. I have fun stuff planned for Beasties here on Spoiler TV to pass the time so be sure to keep checking back here.

  16. Thanks for a lovely review. Clear-sighted as always! A few of my thoughts:
Jay Ryan is the anchor of the show. He can act his way out of any script and this episode he was sharp, clever, intelligent, sweet, funny and as always made his character a genuine person.
Cat and Vincent together again. A sigh of relief wafted the curtains in the writers´ room. Just a pity that Cath had to say "Well it is my apartment" when Vincent was so happy that she had stayed. Not the nicest thing to say to the love of your life. It is as if she took out her revenge on Vincent for all the guys that had done a bunk on her.
Tess being an absolute turn-coat this episode about Gabe, Vincent and JT. But that´s okay Tess, we have longed for the real you.
Cath verbal insistence that she never needs any help. In practice however she is never afraid to ask Vincent for and to receive such help from him as is necessary.
Gabe being as fond of the limelight as ever, that is a funny trait. But I think the writers want to make us rise up in wrath over Gabe´s revenge on Vincent and Cath during the hiatus. And then - wham - show that we are wrong, Gabe has been a good guy all the time. Though I firmly believe that anyone who says "I have bent over backwards to show that I am the good guy" IS NOT a good guy.

  17. Nice review Lilith :D Thank you! VinCat back to together YAY (of course he HAD to get arrest ARG), Glob (gabe) be gone (why? I mean seriously - if he IS behind Vincent's arrest that is not going to earn him any brownie points with Catherine - makes me wonder, hmm), JT&T - can we just call the cute police on them? :D Sam - I actually did feel very sorry for him - as a mom I can understand the hate towards those who hurt your child (when not dealt with properly, that is). This was an A+ episode for me.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Lilith, enjoyed your review as always you're still the best, I sure hope during this break you can keep us going, it's a very long break, just when we get Catherine back, I was really proud of her this episode, it goes without saying V's always doing his thing, I loved the humor as well, best thing of the entire episode V left Gabe, with eye on his face, I'm going to keep checking in to see what you got going on, Thanks Lilith for all you do for the BEASTIES!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. As much as we hate/dislike Gabe, he did serve a greater purpose. Gabes presence made the reunion between VinCat that much sweeter. Who didn't cheer out loud when Cat went back in for the second kiss. When it's all over, several seasons from now :D, hopefully we remember the "VinCat Kiss" and not all the Gabe junk it took to get there.

  20. I have seen this update that the hiatus is ending the week of April 26 see link http://www.dstv.com/News/Series-Calendar/326 .

This was a great, great episode. It had so many wonderful and funny moments - who knew Vincent was so funny? Finally the real Cat emerged and finally gave Gabe his marching orders. Tess is no longer on team Gabe - she's team Cat and the simultaneous best friends talking ''about last night" was hysterical.

There was drama, suspense, and speak Vincent gave to Sam was so touching and showed how much he's evolved. Then there was the car scene "best kiss off" between Cat & Gabe - I cheered and I've watched it numerous times.

Finally the VinCat moment - the song Guiding Light was used last year in the final scene of Date Night when Cat & Vincent talked about their cross breed children and small dog, so it was a nice touch to see it close out this spectacular episode. The final scene when Vincent was arrested was quite shocking and you know our Saint Gabe was a busy boy after Cat dumped him.

So I hope you'll keep the conversation going over the next 5-6 weeks until ep 17 is aired and we have to keep the noise up on social media - we must have season 3

  21. About Last Night was a beautiful episode. It felt like I was watching season 1 all over again, I loved it. Season 2 has been an emotional rollercoaster ride but last night episode left me satisfied. I loved the humorous side to this show. For the last 15 episode, this whole season, has been dark and heartbreaking and I'm glad that 216 was not especially going into this long hiatus. Lilith I'm going to miss your reviews for #BATB but will definitely keep up with your blog and joining you for trending events. Hopefully we can have a weekly 2 episodes viewing and trending on Monday night like we did during the fall hiatus. LoL You kept me sane during that time.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah, I'd love to keep in touch with my Beasties and have episode tweet parties! Yes, I loved the break from the darkness that had been hanging over the show for the entirety of season 2. You know that old saying about a man without hope is the most dangerous thing, LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  23. The Sam story was just too rushed and he racked to high of a body count before we saw any glimpses of remorse also I don't have children, LOL! I'm definitely hoping we get more JTnT in the last remaining episodes, cute and snarky just the way I like my love birds.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I totally didn't want to get into the Tess thing in the review. I got all that anger out last night when I recorded the podcast, probably why this review is so mellow to be honest, LOL! If they try and make Gabe the good guy again then he is a goner because good guy has been boring and annoying, which is a shame because if we do get a season 3 Sendhil is a nice draw to have and to work promotions around.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The wait might kill me, I'm drowning in my feels, I've watched 5 times already.

  27. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  28. Vincent has been bringing the funny since the start of the season and I can't wait to catalog all of his 'bitch faces' he's made during season 2.

Small note: The link you provided was for M-Net which is a South African paid subscription network and it is actually slightly behind airing episodes that US/Canada has is my understanding. But if that is the case, that rocks if it comes back in April.

    ReplyDelete
  29. While I might not like the circumstances that brought VinCat back together, I will say that this rooftop scene and morning after scene was far superior than the one in Tough Love. I think it's because season 2 has been emotionally draining and we've all been on edge and this was the breath of fresh air we all needed to brace ourselves for what's ahead, imho. What's your take on it?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Vincent is the reigning champion of best character of the night! At the beginning of the season I would have never thought so but Jay just killed everything they tossed at him.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Great review,I agree totally especially getting rid of Gabe.He is just taking up time from J.T. and Tess.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Lilith you wrote about: "Vincent’s need to always try and save Cat even when she doesn’t need it." I can´t agree with you there. Why isn´t it alright to have each others backs in hairy situations, necessary or not? You can´t ask people to follow some rules when to save and when not. In the chapel bomb situation in an earlier episode Cath not only put herself in danger by waltzing back into the chapel and graciously allowed Vincent to save her, he didn´t even rate a thank-you when he did.

  33. I think I loved them both for different reasons. TL was the first kiss and I think it was incredible for a first kiss scene, showing the passion and desire. This scene was a) beautifully shot, I mean beautifully!! b) I loved the fact that so little was said - its simplicity added to the beauty. I feel that after all they have been through, this scene was ideal in showing that despite their hardships they belong to each other and they are one. It showed their love is now well established and firm and it has been tested and has survived - hence I also loved the choice of song. So yes, not sure I can choose, but I adore this rooftop and morning after scene.

  34. I guess one of the things that was bothering me a bit about the reunion, other than the obvious, could you not have given us at least a day of them back together after this heart-wrenching season, and a two month long hiatus---is Vincent saying I never want to hurt you again. I feel that Cat did her own share of hurting to Vincent as well as it would have been poetic for her to apologize to him too. The season has been about redemption and character building and both had their characters stripped bare to somewhat build them up again-we did see that in Vincent but not so much in Cat, as there was a rush to get the two back together. Anyway, thought that, Cat needed to do some apologizing too as they both hurt each other in order to find their way back to each other!

  35. You wrapped up this ep very nicely! I do agree Stuart Gillard did a fantastic job...I so enjoyed the ep every single tiny second...with some of these seconds more than others obviously!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I totally agree with you. He proved his talents in so many different ways...I am very confident he is bound to get noticed (very soon) and snatched away to show his potential! Great and happy for him but sad to lose our masterbeast :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I`m grateful for VinCat back together but I missed passion and desire in love scenes in this ep. And in whole season, too. I`m pretty tired and destroyed by this season.
It`s Beauty and the Beast - story about love and we`ve got hardly 3 kissed scene and NO ONE proper love scene in 16 eps! Worse than S1. Where is the passion from S1? Only flashbacks from S1? The show runners decided dedicate the show to 10 years old or what? And what is even worse - in that 3 kissed scene was no emotions, besides 215 Catch Me If You Can last scene. Kissing is careful, machine. Even I`ve missed honest carefree smile in a few warm scenes in whole season.
It seems like Jay and Kristin got scared of their own chemistry and something kept them back (besides script and Kern). That`s make me sad. It`s shame and waste of incredible chemistry between 2 characters.
And please, don`t let them cut hair to Jay! In Season 3! :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree with all that you say, but I can't let to talk about your great theory "Gabe don't love Cat, he just want a control" - I feel it too.
I loved this episode - maybe one of better of this season, but I don't know, because I liked so much from the last episode too. Still that all good, I don't feel the magic from VinCat on the Roof scene - maybe the love declaration should be greater...But, I loved all others scenes!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I like your review thanks xD
and I'll be reading you're review of Reign :) I love this show

    ReplyDelete
  40. love those, but my favorites 'obviously I don't make decisions for Catherine' and the one in the elevator 'just don't expect me to save you again!' with that little smirk at the end lol

    ReplyDelete
  41. I get what you're saying about the lack of "proper love scenes" in season 2, I miss scenes like in s01e15 and 16, but I don't completely agree with the rest... as much as I would have actually liked for Vincent and Cat to talk more at the end of episode 16 and I find the ending and resolution of all their differences a bit rushed, I thought the kiss was really sweet and tender and exactly what was needed at the moment...

for me it was more about showing their love for and to each other at that point, than their physical attraction... we all know they were still deeply attracted to one another even after Vincent came back and didn't remember who Cat was or how important she was to him, hence the fact that they slept together in episode 2... that's never been the issue clearly... therefore I didn't mind that it was maybe less passionate than every other kiss we've seen so far or that he didn't maul her up there on the roof, the first chance he got lol I'm happy to think it was more a confirmation or reaffirmation of their deep feelings and the fact that they were choosing each other again!

that's not to say of course, that I wouldn't have wanted to see more of the passion that after that kiss I'm sure led them to bed again lol ^ ^ but that kiss on the roof was great as far as I'm concerned! :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yep, Melissa studied the formula of what works for the show as I mentioned. Definitely a formula they never should have strayed from.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks! Reign is the show I decided to obsess over until BATB comes back, LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Nielsen Ratings are antiquated and not accurate and there's been a lot going on, on that front. Was shocked at the demo and viewers especially when everyone knew that VinCat was getting their time to shine.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Stuart is one thing I would not change about the show. So many great things about this episode, it was such a relief to be able to genuinely gush about the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  46. That's just always been a glaring thing in their relationship to me and quite a few other Beasties I know. BATB came across as a show that was about girl power at it's core and Vincent always lurking around can come across the wrong way at times. Are you telling you can't think of one time Vincent hasn't jumped in to save Cat when she had it completely under control? But I do get where you are coming from on the chapel situation but in that case Cat didn't know what was really going on either.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Such a predicament, really, I love Sendhil but I hate the way Gabe sucked up screen time this season and now it seems his redemption was pointless just very frustrating.

    ReplyDelete
  48. In the chapel situation Cath was perfectly aware, they had just got all the people out because of the bomb scare. She got back in to look for Gabe and Gabe is all "What are you doing here?" as if there was time to stop and exchange explanations.
I blame it on the bad writing that Cath (or anyone for that matter) who might/might not have needed the help was rude about it. It just shows up Cath as a whiny know-it-all. Perhaps unintentionally, but I miss the old Cath who actually simply could say thank you without losing face.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Thank you, Lilith. Now, I can have hopefulness to Season 3.

    ReplyDelete
  50. About Last Night was a 10. Great episode that had everything and finally at last VinCat back together again. I think it also brought out manipulative Gabe's real intentions. Gabe is definitely out to get Vincent. We see Vincent getting arrested shocking both Vincent and Cat. Gabe is behind it - his way of keeping VinCat apart to work his diabolical plan. I hope Gabe is destroyed or found out very soon. It's time for Gabe to leave.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Great Recap!!! enjoyed reading it!
Queries; do you think Cat will resent having to face the same situation where Vincent is once again a wanted man? Do you think she will go with him?
She kept stating that her fear was going backwards and now Vincent reprises his old role as a wanted man, isn't that going backwards?
You can tell that Vincent is more so concerned with Cats livelihood and not messing it up for her which is why he tells her that she cannot go with him. Cat states that she just got him back and she is not going to let him go again which i think is beautiful and adds to the epic love they have. They cannot be apart, I doubt Cat or Vincent could survive being completely apart from each other, she even states in the preview that she could not survive his going to jail for life. It just proves how they need to be near each other, I doubt Vincent could live without her on the run, he would not make it because she is a part of him and him of her. Remember in season 1 there was an episode where he said that he was scared she would hate him as much as he hated himself at that moment, she turns around and tells him that hating him would be like hating herself. They are that connected don't you think?
Look forward to hearing from you!!!!
    Thanks and great great review!!!

  52. I loved Vincent in this episode! I haven't really felt that way about him in a while, but as you said, he was smart, witty and charming, and that gave us a glimpse of the old Vincent, which was good considering all the flashbacks to season one. I am sooo shipping JTnT! I loved how Tess was finally open about her feelings for JT and we finally got some resolution. I think that in the future of this couple, they will probably try to keep it casual to save their friendship, and try not to tell Vincent and Cat to keep it from being weird. This will lead to some comedic, awkward exchanges that Vincent and Cat will notice, while they're trying to hide it. They'll also fail at being casual when their hearts get in the way. VinCat together is also way better than Cat being with Gabe, or Vincent and Tori (before she died). This doesn't mean that I like Gabe any less, they just aren't compatible together. I'm not sure who turned Vincent in, but I hope they were just trying to make it seem like it was Gabe. It would be a shame to spend all that time on his redemption, then to have him just throw it all away like that. I think that it would be a good twist if Tori turned him in right after he did it, while she was still afraid of him, and they just found him (or found evidence) after she had already died. Great episode, can't wait for the return!
