Arrow - Roy Harper's Future Alter-Ego Revealed

Thanks to Swiftnissity for the heads up.
COLLIDER: What was your intention with calling Roy by the Speedy nickname in Episode 17?

GUGGENHEIM: We did it because we want to keep inching Roy towards an Arsenal place. One of the runnings gags is that he keeps getting called Speedy and says, “I don’t like that nickname. Come up with another nickname for me.” When the time is right, eventually the nickname that will stick will be Arsenal, but the time has to be right.

  1. Ah so he will be called "Arsenal"

  2. Arsenal is one DC comic character and one of Roy Harper's alter egos. Honestly I think it suits Roy best, currently neither .Speedy or red Arrow suit Roy

  3. So its Arsenel not Red Arrow. Hmm..

  4. "One of the runnings gags is that he keeps getting called Speedy and says, “I don’t like that nickname. Come up with another nickname for me.”" -> "keeps"? I haven't watched 2x16 yet but I don't recall them ever calling him that. Speedy is THEA's nickname, not Roy's. He could always end up taking the name in her honor if she dies or something, but I don't know where they pulled this "Roy keeps getting called Speedy" thing from.

Anyway. Doesn't Arsenal have a robotic arm? Looks like poor Roy has an amputation coming. Also, when I hear that name I always think of the English football team...

  5. Arsenal is my favorite Roy alter-ego so I am happy about this, although i hope this means he actually gets an arsenal of weapons.

  6. Roy got the robotic arm somewhere in the 2000s but since the reboot he's back to being Arsenal with both limbs intact. And he was Arsenal in the comic universe way before his arm got cut off.

  7. Ah, I see. Well, since they're following the new 52 universe in some ways (like Waller being young and thin), I suppose Roy will get to keep his arm. Good for him. :)

  8. I think he's talking about 217? They keep calling him Speedy in 217 but eventually he'll go straight from "speedy" to Arsenal, not Red Arrow in between. I actually think that's a good call given the rage/Mirakuru storyline, Arsenal seems more appropriate.

  9. Yeah, but even if they do it then it'll seem contrived. There's nothing more annoying than characters doing something for the first time and the show framing it like it's something they've been doing forever, even though we've never seen it before. You can't just have them start calling him Speedy one day and act like it's been his nickname for ages.

  10. So does this mean that Thea will be speedy?

  11. Good. I hated the idea of Roy getting Thea's nickname, and this opens the door to her eventually becoming Speedy. Arsenal fits this Roy better anyway.

  12. The progression of Roy's codename goes from Speedy, to Arsenal, to Red Arrow, then back to Arsenal. If Oliver quits at the end of Season 3, I could see him stepping up as Red Arrow.

  13. Interesting but isnt Thea the one that Oliver calls Speedy? ... Arsenal sounds like a hero with lots of weapons and stuff

  14. No argument from me, I was just explaining my interpretation of Guggenheim's comments.

The Speedy thing is like the Green Arrow gag in S1 (with Merlyn dropping the name and Oliver saying it sounds stupid). It's a wink wink / Easter Egg to the audience...sort of like Roy calling them Team Arrow. I'm not saying it's good/right...I guess the show needs to find the right balance between tossing out scenes for the comics factor and writing for the general audience.

  15. Even if its the first time they call him speedy in episode 217 my question is why would they call him that. Isn't it Thea's nick name? Oliver called her that in three ghosts didn't he? Guggenheim should not give interviews and tidbits. He confuses the heck out of me.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh. Thanks didn't know that. So first it was Speedy. I thought Mia Dearden was Speedy?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with the team calling him Speedy. The Easter eggs are a nice little gift for DC fans and that's fine by me. I just don't get what Guggenheim is talking about because you can't say that Roy being called Speedy is a habit of the other team members the first time you actually show it on screen. Besides, he hasn't been in that foundry long enough for them to regularly call him any nickname, LOL. (Man, doesn't it feel like we skipped a few episodes' worth of Roy being integrated into the team? We went straight from Oliver bringing him to the Arrowcave for the first time in the end of 2x12 to his already training there and being chummy with the others in 2x15. This is the unfortunate result of the show having so many concurrent plots and characters.)

  18. Yeah, that's the other annoying thing. No reason for them to address Roy by his girlfriend's nickname. It really starts to feel like they can't keep track of all the storylines and characters anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  19. OK, I see what you mean. Yeah I agree with your comments about it being a running gag when this is the first time it pops but. BTW I sort of touched on your Roy comments in the episode discussion thread (in reply to one of your posts),

  20. The writers did totally abandon the Thea being Speedy plot ?

    ReplyDelete
  21. You said everything I wanted to say, from the "keeps", to Speedy being Thea's nickname, to the Arsenal English football team.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Mia was Speedy after Roy left Ollie to be Arsenal. It is similar to Dick Grayson being Robin before going by Nightwing, and Jason Todd following in his footsteps as the new Robin.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Wondering that myself...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Roy is getting the code name Arsenal isnt what this article is about, were are you getting this Speedy thing from.

Are people just addicted to complaining or something. They didnt skip any important scenes, shows jump in time all the time. Roy meet Team Arrow, and episodes later he was training in the cave, what more was supposed to be shown.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Where am I getting this Speedy thing from? You did read the short piece above, right?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Great minds :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I really hope Thea becomes Speedy, she's got the amazing aim and all.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I actually expected him to become "red Arrow" first....

    ReplyDelete
  29. "RUNNING gag" is something that's been going on for a while, a repeated joke, which is why you don't refer to it as such before it's even happened on screen once.

    ReplyDelete
  30. What part of "running gag" does someone not understand

Its probably just a joke, like the team teasing Roy and getting him worked up because they know he doesnt like that nickname as its thea's. Also likely Its just a comic easter egg and callback for the comic fans.
Again its something not to be worked up about as he will be officially ARSENAL in the Arrow series.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Maybe that's the thing, hell be called Arsenal because with the mirakuku re became an weapon of sorts... That actually makes sense..

    ReplyDelete
  32. I believe he shouldn't be called Red Arrow that soon, since he wasn't able to use and Bow and Arrow, lol, maybe later...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Roy was Arsenal way before he got the robotic arm, he just got the robotic arm somewhere between 2010-2012. Since the New 52 he has been Arsenal If I'm correct, and so far Mia Dearden hasn't showed up yet. And Oliver and Black Canary never met, besides Dinah has a husband.
