I used to love: True Blood and Once Upon a Time. But for me, both of them got lost on the storyline. Nowadays, my favorite shows are: Supernatural (the first show I watched in my life and it's been almost 10 years together), Sleepy Hollow ( which became a big surprise for me during the season) and Grimm (because the show improved a lot since season 1). I never watched The Vampire Diaries or The Originals. One day I intend to.
Sleepy Hollow, Once Upon a Time and Being Human. Sleepy Hollow is crazy fun, and has the right balance of seriousness, funny moments and action. Once Upon a Time may be cheesy time to time, but when it delivers it does rewally great, creating real tension and quite some heavy emotions. Being Human is a show I still have to catch up with, but so far it's been really interesting to follow, the characters are likeable and the story arcs have been handled quite great
Being Human, Da Vinci's Demons and Grimm. Also watch Lost Girl (fourth season is one big, unfunny joke), True Blood (still have it's moments but I'm glad it ends) and The Vampire Dramas (no comment).
Supernatural, Grimm & The Originals, but also watch Haven, Being Human, Almost Human, The Tomorrow People, TVD, Arrow, Teen Wolf, Sleepy Hollow. I will try all of them, but all don't keep me, left Lost Girl, OUaT, True Blood, Orphan Black(might give this one a longer shot in the off season).
Wow. I just realized that I watch a lot of "urban" fantasies! My favorite shows are Haven, OUAT, Sleepy Hollow and Grimm, but I occasionally "hate watch" Lost Girl, The Vampire Diaries and the Originals (mainly because I was a fan of the earlier seasons and can't seem to let go!). If I had to pick an all time favorite, I'd go with Haven. The show has a bit of a slow burn, but it's addicting and truly one of the most interesting science fiction series I've watched.
Great point, Mercy. I never realized these were "urban fantasies." Grimm is by far my favorite, and it's making me fall in love with Portland. Also like Sleepy Hollow. I like OUaT for a while, I'm cooling on it now. I guess Buffy and Angel were urban too.
Teen Wolf, Sleepy Hollow, Once Upon a Time, Lost Girl, Supernatural, Grimm, Being Human, True Blood. I used to watch The Vampires Diaries as well, but i quit some episodes ago.( The SL...uhm sorry, non-existent SL became just too ridiculous imho.) :(
i love OUAT, but SPN and TVD are my favorites. Both are about things that are so far from reality, but theres something that roots them in real life. The bonds between the characters, the emotion, and even the dialogue makes it all feel so rea;
Once Upon A Time because you have strong females who don't need a man to save them all the time and relationships between the characters Haven because you have strong female lead Lost Girl also strong female lead and I like the relationships between the characters Sleepy Hollow because I the characters and how they interact together
mhhm I think I remember checking on imdb if the classify themsleves as fantasy + the setting and that is how I defined the term. Haven is one of the few I don't watch (yet).
I defined an urban fantasy show as a fantasy show (mythological creatures, less/no science) that has a setting in our world. An opposite would be Game of Thrones which takes place in Westeros etc.. Thinking about the term it would apply to TTP but if feels much more Sci-Fi to me.
thanks. I've encountered the term more in a genre for books but I thought it could also be applied to tv shows. Strictly speaking Da Vinci's Demons should not be on the list because it does not take palce in our timeline (as far as I know, since I don't watch).
I was rather torn with BaTB. I think this show is one of the few shows that is a mixture of many genres. From the world building BaTB would technically be more SCI-FI but somehow this show feels more fantasy for me and with with TTP it just feels the other way around for me.
Based on what is in the list, I would think Teen Wolf, Bitten, Atlantis, The Originals, Ravenswood, American Horror Story, Witches of East End, Hemlock Grove, and maybe a few others depending on where the line gets drawn for "urban".
Since you like so many of these, here are some upcoming shows that might fit on the list (won't really know till we see them): Salem, Penny Dreadful, Dominion, The Strain, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, Hieroglyph, Emerald City, The Almighty Johnsons.
There are also about a dozen pilots getting made that might fit.
Haven is definitely urban. You can see from the opening that it is reasonably dense with a population over 20,000. It does turn very rural a couple miles from city center though.
I like OUAT but I'm really just over the Charming family. I wish we'd get more of the other characters. SPN I still watch but it's no where near as good as it used to be (same with TVD). I can not stand the Bo/Lauren/Dyson triangle on Lost Girl and this season has been sort of meh. It's too ship-based and not enough character based (I do love Kenzi). I have the same problem with Haven - I don't like the Audrey/Nathan/Duke love triangle and I want it to go away, it takes away from my enjoyment of the show. I think I may just hate love triangles because with TVD I've been over the Stefan/Elena/Damon love triangle since Season 3.
I know. :-) I've been reading your posts for years, including your weekly reviews. Because of those I already decided to give Teen Wolf a try but Sleepy Hollow comes first. Thanks for recommending it. And I still like SPN, it's just not the same anymore. I miss the dynamic the brothers had in the first three seasons. It's all about angels and demons and misunderstandings between Dean and Sam now and that's so utterly boring.
Grimm, all the way. It is just so refreshing to see a supernatural show which nevertheless manages to stay grounded - and show mostly normal relationships.
Thanks for reading. I'm working on Last Week in TV this morning, and this comment has given me that extra boost I've been needing. I'm glad you are going to watch both, but I agree on watching Sleepy Hollow first. There are so many twists and spoilers in it, plus the killer season finale. I wouldn't want to get massively spoiled before watching. When you are done, if you want to talk about the episodes, let me know. I always love discussing theories and plot twists for Sleepy Hollow. As for Supernatural, the first three years are my favorite too. I've been missing SPN so I think I'm going to try to squeeze in a marathon up to the writers' strike.
I picked Grimm. I guess Being Human and Supernatural would come next. I'm British though, so I'm not up to date with all of these. If the CBBC series Young Dracula counts...
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I love OUAT, True Blood and Lost Girl. Well, I love Urban Fantasy.
ReplyDeleteOn the list: Sleepy Hollow & Once upon a Time
ReplyDeleteOff the list: The Originals
Supernatural, TVD and Haven!
ReplyDeletedefinitely OUAT and sleepy hollow
ReplyDeleteOUAT, Sleepy Hollow, TVD, Grimm from the list
ReplyDeleteOther: Originals. And also Orphan Black and Arrow if they count as "urban" fantasy!
Apparently from this list I love urban fantasies. Sleepy Hollow, Grimm, OUAT, Being Human, Supernatural, and The Vampire Diaries.

ReplyDeleteHaven and OUaT
ReplyDeleteGrimm, Sleepy Hollow and True Blood. I also wanna check out Supernatural and Haven.
ReplyDeleteTrue Blood, VD and OuaT, but I'm also planning to watch Sleepy Hollow - I only heard good things about it.
ReplyDeleteBeing Human, Da Vinci's Demons and Grimm.
ReplyDeleteAlso watch Lost Girl (fourth season is one big, unfunny joke), True Blood (still have it's moments but I'm glad it ends) and The Vampire Dramas (no comment).

ReplyDeleteAh, why did you do this to me? LOL. I love SPN, Haven, OUAT, Sleepy Hollow, Grimm, and Lost Girl
ReplyDeleteSupernatural, True Blood, The Originals (other)

ReplyDeleteVoted for Being Human and Lost Girl
ReplyDeleteLove those Syfy shows, so underrated. The cast for both shows are truly fantastic and got great chemistry. The plots are interesting too.
I gave up on Supernatural, OUAT, Grimm, Haven a long time ago. And wont be watching Sleepy Hollow next season, got too silly.
I watch them all except Haven and Lost Girl, but since Bitten wasn't in the poll I chose Da Vinci's Demons.
ReplyDeleteOnce Upon A Time because you have strong females who don't need a man to save them all the time and relationships between the characters
ReplyDeleteHaven because you have strong female lead
Lost Girl also strong female lead and I like the relationships between the characters
Sleepy Hollow because I the characters and how they interact together
If Beauty and the Beast BATB is classified like Urban Fantasy, it´s my favorite, no doubt about it, if not
ReplyDeleteTVD very good :)
Sleepy Hollow, Once Upon A Time, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries & Lost Girl
ReplyDeleteNot on the list: The Originals, Teen Wolf, Bitten

ReplyDeleteWent with OUAT :)

ReplyDeleteWell I watch more than on the list and only two are on the list I don't watch..... I just wanted to know who else is so crazy ;-)

From Mercy's comments below, Atlantis doesn't really fit.
ReplyDeleteAlso Dracula, though that is unlikely to get renewed.
ReplyDeleteOUAT it the best out there. I also think Lost Girl and Grimm are good contenders.
ReplyDeleteHaven is not urban in any sense it is totally Rural.
ReplyDeleteBeing Human!! Love that show! And Vampire Diaries and Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteHaven is definitely urban. You can see from the opening that it is reasonably dense with a population over 20,000. It does turn very rural a couple miles from city center though.
ReplyDeleteSorry True Blood, VD and OuaT but I went with Sleepy Hollow. That show really surprised me. Now if The Originals was on the list...hmmmm....
ReplyDeleteGrimm and Sleepy Hollow on the list. Teen Wolf off the list. 3 of my favorite shows.
ReplyDeletePeople consider 20,000 urban? O.O
ReplyDeleteSupernatural
ReplyDeleteOther - Beauty and the Beast / #BatB
ReplyDeleteBeauty and the Beast - OTHER
ReplyDeleteOther-Beauty and the beast #batb!!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't classify OUAT as "Urban". Or Vampire Diaries. Or Haven.
ReplyDeleteActually, they said on the show that the population was over 20,000. A city doesn't have to be a metropolis to be urban.
ReplyDeleteBH, TVD, and SH. I voted for.
ReplyDeleteI like Sleepy Hollow the best.

ReplyDeleteSleepy Hollow and other- Orphan Black!
ReplyDeleteWhat about Teen Wolf??
ReplyDeleteCW's Beauty and the Beast
ReplyDeleteI picked Grimm. I guess Being Human and Supernatural would come next. I'm British though, so I'm not up to date with all of these. If the CBBC series Young Dracula counts...
ReplyDeleteI love a lot of fantasy series, but my absolute favorite is Lost Girl.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural tops tops tops! Sleepy Hollow is a strong second though. Great new show!
