The Walking Dead – Episode 4.10– Inmates – Review : Four Stories

Feb 18, 2014

Last night, The Walking Dead continued its fourth season with an all new episode, titled “Inmates”. This episode was a nice change from last week “After”.
Even though I loved last week episode, it was a bit slow, only centered on Rick, Carl and Michonne. This week, we got to watch a lot of our beloved survivors, and it was great. “Inmates” was a very good episode, with surprising comebacks, zombies actions, character development… Well everything to make a great episode ! Too bad Michonne and Rick were missing.

In “Inmates”, we followed the different, and small, groups of survivors, right after they left the prison. I really enjoyed how the story was told, following one group then another etc… I kept waiting for the groups to collide but that’s not for now.
Let’s review what happened to our favorite characters !

First, we started with Beth and Daryl, fighting against zombies in the woods. Beth was lucky to have found Daryl, along with Michonne, he’s the character I'd want to be stuck during a zombies apocalypse ! Beth has really grown since season 2. If you remember, back at the farm she was all weak and suicidal, but since the prison she had became darker and calmer. At first, I did not really like her and I thought she’d die quickly but now I really like her character. She is like the new Carol.
Beth decided to write everything in her diary, because that way maybe her wishes will come true and it’s always good to write down, to leave a trace. So future generations will have something to remember how it was in the beginning. It’s a great idea and I’m glad Beth chose to do that. Also, as she used to write beofre everything happened, it's a nice wa to feel normal again.
Daryl was more self-contained and not very communicative. The guy is a survivor. Beth wanted to look for the others, if they survived maybe Rick and co did too. As Daryl is a tracker, they tracked in the hope to find other survivors from the prison. So, they went into the woods and found dead rabbits, that someone ate. That was a good sign someone else was out there but who ?
Following people’ tracks, Daryl and Beth came across some walkers which attacked them. I was frightened for Beth’s fate for a moment but she survived. Good girl and Daryl is a bad ass, still he seemed a little out of his game. Then, they found again walkers, having a nice lunch by the train tracks. It was disgusting and I had no idea who they were eating….

Because in order to know that, we had to watch Tyreese’s part ! The episode was well written and constructed. We first watched Daryl and Beth, and after we watched what happened before they came : Tyreese was there, with other survivors.
So Tyreese is the unluckiest survivor, he found himself with Lizzie and Mika, the children. Not the best pals to help you surviving. It turned out Tyreese was in a more uncomfortable situation when it was reavaled he was holding baby Judith as well !

I’m glad she is alive ! Baby Judith ! Rick and Carl are going to be so happy if they can be reunited with her. I must say I’m glad they didn’t kill baby Judith, she represents hope for the show. But going into the woods with a baby and two kids is an horrible way to survive walkers.
It turned out the dead rabbit Beth found were Tyreese and the children’s dinner. Luckily, they took some bottles for Judith, she had to drink them cold but at least she was eating something. They could eat but they couldn’t rest, sleep or hunt to look for foods. Baby Judith was an alarm for walkers, when she started crying, the woods became dangerous and the smallest noise could be a walker coming towards them. So they had to move all the time !
I really like Lizzie’s character, as a child she is very strong and clever, Carol taught her well. Tyreese taught them also some rules, like running when you hear a walker but trying to stay close to your group in the same time. Mika is younger and clearly weaker than Lizzie, but she will serve as a role model and as Tyreese pointed out, everybody is different, reacts different but it doesn't mean it's bad.
The best part of their story was when Tyreese heard human screams and decided to go help them, in case they were survivors of the prison. So, he left Lizzie and Mika, along with baby Judith alone in the forest. Poor children, that must have been so scary. I was really scared for the three of them, specially when two walkers came towards Mika. Lizzie made me very nervous as well. As Judith kept on crying, the girl put her hand on her mouth and started suffocating Judith. She could have killed baby Judith ! As Tyreese ran out, he found some survivors fighting off wakers. He helped them but the survivors were getting bitten and killed. Suddenly, we heard a gunshot from the woods ! Oh god ! Who shot who ? If I were Tyreese, I’d run towards the woods but he finished killing the walkers and when he was ready to take back the children, Lizzie, Mika and Judith came out the woods, along with Carol !

Yippie ! Carol is back ! I was so happy to see her ! She is still alive and kicking ass, she saved the girls and she’ll take care of Judith now. And the fact she got reunited with Tyreese will be interesting. She killed her girlfriend, but he doesn’t know it yet. Will Carol tell him during their trip or someone else will reveal it and Tyreese will be mad ? I don’t know, but I can’t wait for it to happen.
Carol and Tyreese received great news from an injured survivor. He told them about a place, a camp where it’s protected from the walkers. Nice, a new place to stay ! They just have to follow the train tracks and they will find it ! From what I’ve heard about the comics, I think I know where they’re headed… And Daryl and Beth are just behind them so it’s fair to imagine they will meet somewhere along the way.

After following this new group of survivors, made of Daryl, Beth, Carol, Tyreese, Lizzie, Mika and Judith, we moved next to the stories of how Maggie and her loverboy Gleen survived the prison’s attack.
Maggie found a safe place in the woods with Sasha and Bob. Bob was still injured from the attack at the prison. Sasha found the perfect spot to camp and spend the night but Maggie had another plan in mind : she needed Glenn and so they went looking for him. As even Sasha said, it’s not safe to split so they both went with Maggie. They soon found the bus, stopped in the middle of the road... Not a good sign. As Maggie approached, walkers came knocking against the windows, made me jump my seat !
Maggie had to make sure whether Glenn was in the bus or not, so they decided to open the back door and let one by one the walkers out. Good idea, still you're putting yourselves in harm's way. At first, everything went well but when the walkers pushed stronger against the door, Sasha and Bob let it slip and all hell broke loose. Walkers were everywhere and Maggie was cold for a moment, it felt like she was in catatonic state as Beth was back in season 2. Bob and Sasha killed a couple of walkers and Maggie got back to her senses and finished the walker. I loved her when she smashed the girl's head on the bus. I really enjoyed that zombies kill scene, it was fun and scary.
Glenn was not one of the walkers in the bus, so he still may be alive ! I’m very glad Maggie survived the prison and went along Sasha. Bob is a different matter, he’s kind of annoying and I don’t really see him survive, nobody cares for him. Sasha has Tyreese, I’m glad they’re not together now, I think it will be good for their relationship to survive on their own, in different groups. As for Maggie and Glenn, I don’t like watching them apart, they are so cute together and now they’re really in love and they need each other to keep surviving, they’re what good left for them. So, I hope Maggie will find Glenn soon…

As Glenn wasn’t on the bus, he had to be at the prison. I never thought he’d be dead. We first picked hm right after the attack at the prison. He left the bus, without Maggie (or us) noticing and was trapped inside, surrounded by walkers. It must have been awful, waking up alone surronded by walkers.
I first thought Glenn would never survive alone, but it turned out it was good for him to say alone in the prison. That way, he had time to prepare his bag and to take what was necessary. He didn’t leave in a rush, so it’s always better to be prepared when it’s the apocalypse outside. He even took his old cop uniform… And he really needed it.
After making his bag, Glenn had no choice but to go out and run towards the walkers’ crowd. That scene was crazy ! I’d never thought Glenn would do that, it was brave and dangerous in the same time. The man is looking for his lover afterall. He passed thought the walkers and when he was ready to leave the prison for good, he noticed Tara, sitting and waiting. Poor Tara, she was in some kind of a catatonic state, having troubles realizing she helped Brian, a dangerous psychopath to kill a bunch of people and to destroy a perfectly good shelter. Glenn had to save her, not because he liked her or wanted a friend on the way but he needed her. It’s even more terrible to surviving alone out there, so anyone is a good companion in this time. Glenn used Bob’s whiskey bottle to make a Molotov cocktail and created a nice fire. That distraction made Glenn and Tara’s way out easier.
I’m glad Tara survived and found Glenn, she had remorse over what she done, but now she got fooled once by the Governor I hope this won’t happen again and she will be a great new ally for the survivors. As they both began their way into the woods, I realized they were just behind Maggie and her group ! How nice ! They are not that far from each other !
But after being attacked by walkers, Glenn and Tara were rescued by two guys and a girl, driving a big truck and they did not seem very friendly at first. Are they people from the camp Carol and Tyreese are heading ? The guy is Abraham, and again, from what I've heard about the comics, he is a super bad ass !

“Inmates” was a very good episode,I’m really enjoying his new part of the fourth season. I liked the prison at first but it’s so much better now it’s destroyed and the characters have to live outside and really survive. It’s dangerous and scary all the time, I love that atmosphere and this setting. It’s really more interesting for the characters and for us viewers.
The episode was so well written and constructed. I love how the stories were linked to each others, and not told in chronological order or at the same time. It was so much better to be only with one group and follow their story. I really liked Beth and Daryl’s and specially Tyreese and Carol’. Even though Maggie and Glenn are great characters, I found their stories a bit down.
So now, we can see three or four different groups forming : Michonne, Rick and Carl in the house ; Tyreese, Carol, the children, Daryl and Beth going for the tracks and Maggie, Sasha, Bob looking for Gleen, who is with Tara and Abraham's people. I think Maggie will save Glenn one more time but we will see.
I can’t wait for next week and watch will groups will collide and what will happen ! It’s crazy in the woods !

Zombies notes :
• Carol is back ! Finally ! Feels like it has been ages since we last saw her, I was so happy ! Are you she's back ?
• Which group are you more interested in ?
• How will Tyreese react when he learns about what Carol did ?
• Did you miss Michonne ? Rick ? Carl ?
• Will Maggie and Glenn be reunited soon or never ?

Tell me what you think of “Inmates”, hit the comments walkers lovers !

  1. The dead rabbits didn't serve as someone's meal. They served as murder victims. Lizzie slaughtered them like a psychopath.

  2. what happened to luke and molly? The two other kids that during the prison attack were with the psychopath and her sister? Walking dead wikia says that they were eaten by the walkers at the train track, the shoe belonged to a kid...Beth and Dryl were tracking those children, that is why shy burst into tears when she saw the shoe. I think not so many people connected the dots, they need to explain that the kids are dead in the next episode.

  3. I honestly didn"t get that but I don't understand how they could have died at the train track if they were with Lizzie and Mika after the attack.
I thought Beth was crying because she realized the people they were tracking died. We'll know more next week :)

  4. True, she nearly killed her. If Carol did not show up, Judith would have been dead, but probably Lizzie and Mika too.
And Lizzie is young, and she was left alone with two younger children so I can understand her. She doesn't know how to survive, she tried to make Judith silent to be safe. She didn't intend to kill Judith just by pleasure or by any other reasons, she was trying to save herself.

  5. Well, the expression on Lizzie's face when she tried to kill Judith was the same expression her face had when she slaughtered this rabbits. It's very likely that she will end like Ben in the Comics.

  6. Totally agree with you, especially about the Ben from comics part. She IS a psychopath.

  7. Actually Daryl was tracking Tyreese, Lizzie, and Mika.

  8. Beth said Luke's name as far as I remember. It seems Luka and Molly went the same direction that Tyreese went, but they were on the tracks earlier and got killed by the zombies, that was kids shoe. And that is what TWD wikia says. I doubt they are wrong. If the children were alive they would show them in that episode. Unless we are going to see another episode called an adventure of Luke and Molly, webisode maybe...yeah, the're dead, the writers just got rid of the characters they no longer need, they did the same with the prison extras by getting them ALL killed in one bus...I dont really know how would everybody die...nobody managed to escape the bus? Really?

  9. There was bullet holes in the back of the bus. Someone could've gotten shot and died, turned, and a domino effect took place. Most of the passengers on the bus were elderly or sick so escape may not have been the easiest thing for them. They're dead lol I think we can agree on that. As for The Walking Dead wiki don't depend on that site too much. Anyone can edit that page to their liking.

  10. Yes she knew what she was doing and she was so enthralled into it that she couldn't hear Mika's voice as she was saying the walkers were there. Nah, Lizzie was fascinated with suffocating Judith. I also believe she killed the rats. I even believe she might have been the one feeding the zombies. She named them. She is a trip. For those of us who saw Mash's final episode, remember how Hawkeye was on bus with refugees and one of them brought a chicken. But smothered it because it was making noise. It turned out it wasn't a chicken but a baby. The mother had suffocated her own baby to save their lives as the enemy patrol was nearby. The mother was crying and in pain. Hawkeye suffered a mental breakdown because of it. This girl Lizzie is a psycho path. IT was interesting to see how Carol deals with this. I realize that the kids need to learn how to defend themselves. But their immature minds couldn't cope with death and Carol should have sense that and gave them more instruction. I know understand Rick's strong conviction of seeing to it that Carl saves his humanity as much as possible.
