The Originals - Review of Episode 1.12 - Dance Back from the Grave

2 Feb 2014

In ‘Dance Back from the Grave’ Klaus’ theory from last week about witches being a pain in the ass proves to be true. While the two female, newly resurrected witches kept a low profile this week, Papa Tunde did quite the opposite. After harnessing the power of a few vampires, and going after a few of the main characters, he sacrificed himself to give his power to Celeste. Sophie and Marcel seem to be dealing with last week’s events in the same way: with booze. He and Cami seem to become friends (again) and by the end of the episode she even lets him feed off her so that he can heal. Klaus tests the vampires loyalties and a lot more vampires stayed than Marcel (or I) thought.

Best comeback: Elijah was clearly not happy with Rebekah when he found out she’d made a play against Klaus. However Rebekah called him on his hypocrisy concerning his feelings for Hayley. I agree with Rebekah that after all Klaus has done to take away her happiness, she owes him nothing.

Best secret reveal: It turns out the big secret Rebekah and Marcel were keeping is that they conspired to bring Mikael to New Orleans, with the help of the red-headed witch. I’m guessing this is why the writers brought that witch back, so that she can reveal it. I wonder what went wrong back then, since Rebekah was supposed to stay with Marcel in New Orleans. Does this mean we’ll be getting some flashbacks with Mikael soon?

Best coward: Oh Thierry, this is how you repay Rebekah for getting you out of the Garden? I can understand that he would run after seeing Rebekah get taken down. I would run. But he could have at least let someone know. He could have easily made up an excuse as to why they were there.
Best flashback: There were a lot of flashbacks this week, but my favorite had to be Marcel’s return from World War I. Rebekah was clearly (and justifiably) still mad that he betrayed her. Elijah seemed to be in the exact position he is now, trying to keep Klaus from doing something stupid (and failing).

Best fight: Klaus vs Papa Tunde. It’s nice seeing Klaus get his ass kicked for a change. That must have been some power Rebekah gave him because the minute it was gone, all it took was a candleholder to knock him out.

Best villain: Papa Tunde would be the obvious choice here, but I have to go with Klaus. Or at least flashback-Klaus. Marcel explained it perfectly, he gains the trust of his enemies to learn their weaknesses, and then goes in for the kill. Klaus decapitated Papa Tunde’s sons and then killed him by -wait for it- clawing his eyes out. Yikes!

Most underused character: Once again Hayley seems to be on the sidelines again. All the writers seem to use her for lately is giving blood (her baby’s) and chemistry scenes with Elijah. Not that I don’t love those scenes, but I’d like to see her in action more (as much as that would be possible with the baby bump) like earlier in the season.
Best observation: So no Josh again, granted he wouldn’t really have fit in this week’s storyline, but I find it weird that no one’s missing him, even Cami. I’ve gone back through the past episodes and it seems there’s never been an episode with all the major players. There’s always someone missing. So added to my bucket list, I’d like to see an episode with all of the main character (yes, I consider Josh a main character), perhaps the season finale.

Best quotes: Sophie: “… Anything up to and including eye of newt.”

Next week’s ‘Crescent City’ looks to be a good one. Check in again next week and let me know in the comments what you thought of ‘Dance Back from the Grave’.

  1. You missed the best part! Klaus's sexy "I just had seeex and it felt so good" strut and smug smiles at the beginning of the ep, hehehe. Klaus's overall good mood at the beginning of the ep was such a breath of fresh air. He even let Theirry out when Rebekah asked! I think it's obvious now, he needs Caroline. Sad that she didn't get a direct shout out but, she was there in the strut, smiles, and good mood. . :D

  2. I'm really curious as to how Klaus ruined her happiness because I guess I feel like that's what we're told but we haven't seen that. She had a brief fling with Stefan - Klaus did nothing and it seemed like he couldn't have cared less that they hooked up. Rebekah most recently was off with Matt for the entire summer and I assumed they had a good time and whatnot. I don't recall Klaus ever trying to destroy her relationship with Matt or anything of the sort.

Klaus gets his ass kicked all the time though. Elijah, Bonnie, Davina, Alaric, Silas, etc.. so it didn't seem like much a change to me.

Hayley doesn't really fit in to the show IMO. Maybe they'll explore the werewolf stuff later on in the season or something. It seems like they just put her in every episode but most of the time she's just there - I'd rather have had Josh in the episode and Hayley could have sat this one out because she had no purpose.

  3. I thought that it made sense. It's not like anyone in New Orleans would even know who Caroline was (aside from his siblings & Hayley) and I just don't think Klaus goes around telling people about his sex life.

  4. I thought that made sense. It's not like anyone would know who Caroline was (aside from his siblings and Hayley) and I just don't see Klaus going around telling people about his sex life - so I think it would have been OCC of him.

  5. Hey I bet Caroline had a good time. Klaus seems very passionate. I bet he was sexy all around in the woods and after being alive 1000 years with so much passion towards the destruction of his enemies, towards self-perservation, etc. I BET HE IS A PASSIONATE HOT LOVER... OOH baby. Please Caroline kiss and tell someone. LOL

  6. Well,Caroline did say it felt really good to kiss him - in fact it felt so good to make out with him that she just had to sleep with him. When Katherine asked her how it was though I thought her facial expression was pretty self-explanatory though - that it was really good.

  7. The thing with Rebekah is she has no excuse as to why she doesn't just LEAVE if she so damned unhappy. She can't even blame being afraid he'd hunt her down and dagger her because Hayley stole the daggers for her. Rebekah clearly doesn't like it there, she hates the "orphan annie vampires" - her words. Yes, Klaus has done crappy things to her in the past but NO ONE IS FORCING HER TO STAY.
I don't feel like Hayley fit either, she didn't fit with Elijah being an idiot and dragging a pregnant girl into danger and her blood shouldn't have been able to break the circle anyways, the baby is part witch (even though that doesn't make sense since everything says vamp overrides witch 100% of the time) not her, she's a wolf. It's basic biology. It's also established in the show. We saw Tyler had to jam a big ass needle in her stomach to get the baby's blood and HER blood from HER body was separate and what was needed to fully turn the hybrid. Maybe the wolf blood was enough to break it? That would have been the far better explanation to me.
Klaus doesn't seem to be so uber anti Elijah/Hayley either, just the ep before he gave her advice on how to earn Elijah's forgiveness so her to blame Klaus makes her look stupid. Maybe Elijah just isn't that into her? That would be my guess if I were her, lol.

  8. This is true. Rebekah could have spilled to Elijah but it's all good. It's still obvious he was thinking about it, hehe.

  11. Well as for the baby part-this is a first in the supernatural world. Meaning it probably could possibly inhibit all supernatural powers. The baby could possess vamp abilities, wolf abilities, and lastly it might very well be able to have witch powers. None of the supernatural beings know what to expect. Perhaps that it why some of the witches are freaked out. Sure Celeste saw something or very well likely made it up in order to put Klaus' baby in danger. But this is a first and the baby may be a bad ass being.

  12. There wasn't anything to indicate Rebekah knew. We saw one scene of her with Matt so we have no idea what Klaus did or didn't tell her when they left.

  13. I'm actually pissed that Josh isn't around. I mean does he even know Davina is dead?? WTH he just vanished?? I don't get that.

I liked Klaus getting his ass kicked too by Papa Tunde, but i was SO relieved, that he died. Even though i would've liked it if SOMEONE killed him, as opposed to him being a sacrifice for Celeste. I was pretty disappointed in that.

And Rebekah, i love her i really do, and i understand her motives to go against Klaus, BUT the fact that she's doing it to be with Marcel, kinda turned me off. I thought (in the beginning when she was plotting) That is was for her, and she was all Girl Power, Women strike back! But nooo. It's for Marcel, and i'm sorry I still feel like Rebekah is wasting her time with him. (i really don't see their chemistry).

As for Hayley, i'd love to get more action scenes out of her, but the bigger she gets, the less i think that'll happen. But if she has to have more romantic scenes with Elijah, well then i'm all for that. LOL But seriously i think she's going to be more involved with Celeste' storyline sooner than we think. I feel like Celeste will try to take her out. Not b/c of Elijah, but b/c of Klaus.

  14. I would think she'd be able to figure it out when Klaus was missing for many hours and came back probably filthy with a big goofy ass grin, lol. But yeah, there's nothing on screen to suggest she knew.

  15. I felt like this episode was a filler. A really good filler with a lot of fun flashbacks but still nothing major happened that couldn't have happened off screen.
Marcel is beginning to get on my nerves again. I want for him to die so much. First, i had a lot of expectations for him in the beginning as THE big villain and he turned out to mini Klaus. Second, which i find completely unforgivable is how he was always a treacherous little snake curled around Klaus neck biting him every now and then. Klaus is so wrapped up in his painful memories of being abused by mikael that he feels so connected to Marcel he can't even see what a traitor he is.
Marcel NEVER betrayed Klaus for Rebekah, he just grew tired of living in his shadow. So he brought Papa tundo, then Mikael, then tried to put klaus down in the garden. God knows what else he did we still don't know yet. If it is so bad living with Klaus then Marcel should have been the one to leave NOLA.
And i will never believe he committed all those vetrayes for Rebekah, because it's not how you fight for the woman you love. He could have undaggered her and escaped, he continued pursuing cami even after rebekah resurfaced in his life, he never tried to find her after the originals ran, he just build his kingdom like he always wanted. He keeps dangling himself in frond of rebekah like a prize, giving her big speeches about his undying. And the way she keeps falling for his lies is just as pathetic as klaus forgiving him over and over just because they went throught the same hell as kids. He needs to die, i find it really unpleasant watching a character that only cares for himself and nobody else on the show.

  16. How is the vampire stuff going to override any witch genes that baby could have? Vampires aren't born, they are made. I hardly doubt that baby is going to be a vampire. It's more logical to say the baby is a part wolf part witch than to say the baby is a vampire.

  17. It was obvious is was about Marcel from the beginning. She only started all this really when Marcel dumped her and told her he was more interested in being BFFs with Klaus and running the city with him. And she also only started plotting against Klaus when Marcel showed her a picture of a house and gave her some line about how he had planned on building for her but she never came back.

  18. I didn't see it. But when you say it that way....duhhh. lol

  19. I thought the same thing! When he came strutting in he totally had the look of a man well satisfied! Laid and happy looks good on Klaus....almost as good as Caroline looked plastered under him against that tree ;)

  20. Agreed, I would have found it out of character if he had gone bragging about Caroline. I think he cares too much about her for her to be just a shag he brags about. No one even knew he slept with Haley until she came up preggers....
