The Musketeers - Episode 1.04 - The Good Soldier - Preview & Teasers

Feb 4, 2014

Aramis gets very passionate this week, unusually it isn't a woman in his sights but he is incensed about getting justice for an incident from five years ago when practically his whole troop of Musketeers were betrayed and needlessly slain while on a training exercise. The only other man to survive, Marsac (JJ Field), ran away from the slaughter in their camp unable to take in the devastation that surrounded him, and has since that day been wanted for desertion. Marsac hasn’t been idly wasting his time in hiding though, he has been tracking down the real culprit of the massacre, and with the Musketeers help hopes to expose the web of political lies and intrigue at the heart of it all.

As an Aramis fan I am very glad that we have a centric episode for him this week, of the four main cast I feel he had the least to do last week, much of the deeper moments involved Callis and the other three. There are a couple of flashbacks to the carnage he witnessed in the past, but the episode relies a lot on him, and others involved in the plot, providing exposition too which at times in the show has been a little clumsily done but here I feel it works quite well on the whole. Field and Cabrera play off each other very well, it’s easy to believe that they were once very close as Musketeers as they struggle to come to terms with how they have been played as pawns by those around them this week. Aramis also displays some of the loner tendencies that we have discussed in the comments this last week, working off on his own in order to get the information required to take the investigation forward.

The rest of the guest cast is superb also, the stand out for me (as a Being Human fan) has to be Adrian Schiller as Gontard, the Duke of Savoy’s first minister. It’s one of the smaller roles but nonetheless he manages to portray in a few small scenes that he is essentially the equal to the Cardinal, and is just as capable as serving the Duke as he is of serving the King. Vincent Regan and Phoebe Fox are also both marvellous in their roles as the Duke and Duchess, and their being at court with their son also, finally, gives us a small hint at what is causing some of the problems in the marriage between Louis and Anne.

Constance has much more involvement again this week too, it seems as though her house is becoming a favourite place for the troop to have meetings away from the watchful eye of Treville. She is upset at them though at first for lying to her about who Marsac is, well upset at D'Artagnan mainly and tells him that he must move out, but they do make up fairly quickly and he promises to help her with something that must be kept secret from her husband. Unfortunately, I think that the way that the promo was been edited last week has led us to believe that something more romantic will be happening between the two of them this week. I hope it will not be too disappointing when this doesn't happen, they are certainly developing a deeper respect for each other and D’Artagnan learns to treat her as more of an equal, but I think that any affair is still a way off for the two of them as yet.

The Good Soldier airs at 9pm on Sunday 9th February on BBC 1 and BBC 1 HD, below are a few dialogue teasers to see you through until then. Don't forget to come back to vote in our poll after the episode and let us know what you think.

“If this gets me hanged, I'm going to take this very personally”

“I appreciate a melodrama as much as the next man but an explanation might clarify things”

“Allow the Spanish into your country and your independence will be lost forever”

“The captain keeps a record of every Musketeers campaign since the regiment was founded, all except that one night”

“This has to end here Aramis, you know that”

“Insulting a man who holds your life in his hands, I see you are a fool as well as a coward”

“That’s for leaving me alone in the forest with twenty dead Musketeers”

“I killed a man for you yet you still don’t trust me”

“You think I won’t have you arrested, that you are above the normal laws of soldiering?”

“Your prisoner, describe him”

Trailer Teaser

“There are three of us pastor, you are outnumbered”

  1. Thank you for the preview, Sandi! As always :)
I'm glad we're getting Aramis centric episode, I was waiting for this one!

  2. You're welcome. I could have written loads more, had to stop myself giving too much away as I was so enthused at an Aramis episode myself ;) XD

  3. Thank you for your review of the episode, I love reading them! A quick question; do we see any Porthos/Aramis friendship in this episode?

  4. I really did enjoy this episode, not quite as much as last week, but almost as much! And, no, nothing with Queen Anne, which I did find a lil odd myself. Not that there was really any time for them to be together though as the court had visitors so she was entertaining most of the time and he was either brooding, investigating or interrogating elsewhere really. There was only really on point in which they were in the same place at the same time, but even for the two of them I feel it would have been foolish to have tried anything as it was very public. But there is a small hint that all is not well with Anne in her marriage, so I think that it could well be something that could be returned to at some point.

  5. Aramis is my favourite as well, was excited to see the trailer and realise it was an Aramis centric episode!

  6. It's actually a different person who Aramis initially confides in, due to necessity rather than because he wants to, but it isn't long at all before the others notice that something is up and all four of them work together. Porthos and Athos probably spend a bit more time together in this episode if I'm honest, but they are on duty at the time, but generally they are working as a team in this episode.

There are secrets and lies going on higher up, as seen in the promo (Treville and the Cardinal are tied by decisions they took 5 years ago), which makes for some rather murky waters for them to navigate, and they all find some things hard to understand/get to the bottom of which causes doubts with some of them at times. It's an interesting one for sure.

  7. Porthos is fast becoming my second favourite, and be the looks of the promo at the end of this episode we could be getting a Porthos centric one the week after this too :)

  8. Oh yes Porthos is my second favourite as well! Glad all of them are getting their time in the spotlight

  9. Sounds more interesting all the time.

  10. I love it when my favorite characters are bothered by serious events, seeing them react and getting more about personalities. And I think with this one, I'll be pleased =D As for Queen Anne, the fact that she didn't give an heir to the King at young age was indeed one of the reasons why their marriage wasn't a happy one. Louis never touched her, they were both very shy and he saw her more as a sister. Awkward... Enough with History ! Sorry ! And, one more time, I love your previews ! They help me holding up until Sundays ;)

  11. ( And I don't think that after making sure Aramis was wearing the Queen's necklace in "Commodities", the writers will let their relationship down completely. So I'm not worried either ) I'm out !

  12. Loner Aramis: Nice to explore. :) As always, great write-up.

  13. It's a very politically motivated episode, lots of grey areas

  14. Cheers :) It seems that things that we discuss seem to pop up in the next episode the last couple of weeks, first the lack of Porthos development and then Aramis being a loner, lol.

  15. It does seem to be working out that way, doesn't it? Love it.

    Also, just read the statement:

"Czech Anglo Productions are delighted to announce that the 2nd series of "The Musketeers" has today been green lit to shoot in Prague with Prep due to begin next week for a further 10 episodes.

Congratulations to everyone on our fabulous crew for all the hard work done last year to make this possible, and now to do it all over again!!"

  16. It's scheduled to go live in an hour, we have a few posts in a queue at, unfortunately

  17. That's probably what I'd do, or wait for the statement to show up at the BBC site. I was hoping a statement would already be up over there. There are a few tweets about it highlighted on the side, but that's about it.

  18. Thanks for your super quick reply! :D From the get-go you could tell these two had a strong friendship and after the last episode I want to see more of it. It's also nice to see Athos and D'Artagnan forming a strong bond.

I do think it's intriguing that the Cardinal knowing about Aramis and Adele hasn't been mentioned since the first episode and am curious as to when that will actually come into play. Maybe something that is addressed later on in the series?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I really hope it is addressed later on in the series, or I'm going to feel like they dropped a major plot point. I don't want it to be: Aramis sleeps with the Cardinal's mistress, Cardinal finds out and kills said mistress, then nothing is ever said of it again while the show and characters move on pretending none of it ever happened.

I'll be disappointed if it doesn't come back around.

  20. Tbh I thought it was going to be a major storyline just because they mentioned it in the first episode and left it as a cliffhanger. If anything it gives the Cardinal personal incentive for wanting to destroy the Musketeers. And I'd like for Aramis to uncover the truth that Adele did love him and died because of that love. It would be interesting to see how he deals with repercussions of his actions and perhaps it might just influence his attitude towards the Queen.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes. Exactly this. That's what I expected to see. That's pretty much what I'd like to see.

Also Aramis realizing that the Cardinal is more evil than he's imagined, and then of course how the Musketeers themselves deal with that realization and who is perhaps controlling the king and influencing France... I'd like to see all that. :)

  22. Yeah I'm surprised they haven't used the Cardinal more actually. Aside from his occasional talks with Milady, he hasn't actually done anything major against the Musketeers. I really hope Peter Capaldi is able to continue his role as the Cardinal next season, I couldn't imagine anyone else playing the role.

  23. Hope they don't just drop it.

  24. I'm kinda waiting for them to kick off some of his plotting against the Musketeers. If it's been there, it's felt very benign. I keep waiting for hints that he's holding grudges, or for hints of more actual conflict or a real master plan, even if just behind the scenes, in dealing with them. Even though he killed Adele, and that was pretty evil, I don't get the sense of malice that I think should be there. There's something to be said for a calm/cool/collected villain, but I want more. More of it in his interactions with Milady, etc. etc. It seems like, just off the Adele thing, he would have at least tried to arrange to have Aramis killed on a random patrol or something by now. Beaten up by thugs in an alley... anything.

  25. Thanks for the review! :) I'm SO glad each character is getting an episode to shine! I just hope Constance will also get an episode about her. We don't know much about her. Like why is she married to a man she obviously doesn't love? How did that happen? So I hope that's coming up.

About D'Artagnan and Constance, I kind of figured that we wouldn't get a real kiss since that wasn't actually shown in the promo. She probably gave him a kiss on the cheek. It is good promotion though to make it look like something romantic will happen right away. Ratings are important. So I don't blame the promo department for getting the viewers excited. I, of course, would have LOVED to see their romance blossom. I'm patient, though. I think it's coming in the future episodes! I also hope the fans won't get too disappointed when they don't see an actual kiss YET.

I do have a question, though. Is it at least becoming more obvious that D'Artagnan is falling for Constance in the romantic sense? I think it's more clear from her side of things thus far. I really would like to see more from HIS side. Like more hints that he is liking her? That he is fond of her? Was that shown more clearly in this episode?

Oh and about our ratings discussion, here are the consolidated ratings for episode 2! 7.58 million. Pretty good! Still in top 10:

THANK YOU for all that you provide, by the way! We all appreciate it!

  26. heh. You'd almost think they were listening to us if we didn't know the episodes were already filmed and ready for air.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh nice, that's great consolidated ratings, cheers for that :D And you're welcome for the preview, I enjoy writing them up and love discussing the show with you all, it really does help to enjoy the characters and their nuances more when there are other fans to chat with doesn't it :)

I'm afraid that there's no kiss at all in the episode, the promo was just made it look like there would be with a clever edit I'm afraid :( D'Artagnan does defend her honour from another character who tries to force himself on her, and also gets close up to her during the secret that they are keeping from her husband, which are scenes I think the shippers will enjoy thou.

  28. It's very strange that there hasn't been even a line or two that there's a plan afoot, or something. Esp as Milady wants to bring those particular group down too.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thanks! :) I'm going to assume that D'Artagnan will teach Constance how to shoot a pistol. We saw that cute moment with them in one of the early tv promos for the show. :) That's AMAZING! I can't wait for those scenes! I think the fans will be happy with these scenes! :)
